The Disturbing Origins of BAAL | Diablo 2 Resurrected History Explained

- Unsurprisingly, Baal, the Lord of Destruction like his brothers, was inspired from real world religions, & like his in-game origins boasts an unusual & disturbing history.
Diablo Fans know Baal best for his lust for destruction, unparalleled as is his sadistic delight in causing chaos. The Lord of Destruction, is not a title alone as he is undoubtedly the enemy of all creation. As seen in Diablo 2 where Baal successfully corrupted the reality shaping world stone nearly plunging humanity into eternal darkness.
Interestingly, Baal hasn’t always bore the title of Lord of Destruction, in the real world or the diablo franchise alike. In this video we will explore Baals checkered history with humanity in game & how it relates back to his mythos in scripture.

Hey, you made it this far! Thank you for watching, make sure to come back & say hi before you leave... its not safe to go alone...
Hannibal, Carthage’s most iconic general who almost destroyed Rome, means “favorite of Baal.”
Awesome dude. One of the main reasons I love the Diablo franchise is the real world mythological tie ins. I had a pretty religious family growing up, so I was constantly in sunday school(protestant father) and catechism(catholic mother). I remember my 10 year old self catching all these biblical references and being like... this is the darkest, most terrifying game I've ever played. Been in love ever since.
Most likely the developers of Diablo franchise also have the similar religious families aswell
I too have a super religious family and it made me terrified of the first game when I was younger. I remember my aunt got this (Diablo 2 Battle Chest) for me at walmart but when I got home, my mom was mortified and forced her to take it back to the store. Because "Diablo" means devil in spanish, and also because of how incredibly evil the box looked. I loved it, and it's still one of my favorite box arts of all time.
Baal's Appearance introduction in act 5 and Kain in "Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver" has the same energy to me when I was a kid playing those games. Both scary as fuck but makes the game more exciting to play
@Michael Flannery Oh yes.
I don't remember any character named Baal in SoulReaver. Maybe you refer to that turelim vampire from wich you absorb the telekinetic projectile power?
@@arx3516 read it again
As someone that loves seeing how creators tie in real world history, or especially mythology/religion into making a world, this was really cool! Your content for Sanctuary is my favorite, so would love to see more like this, awesome work as always!
ba'al and many other old gods are not just mythology, in fact the word "mythology" is used to hide true history behind a giant paper rock.
Thanks for explaining the wonderful tie in between the game's lore and actual world history.
My pleasure! I love that they made his in game lore mirror real world religious ties!
@@DarkLOREDash
Same. In a weird way, it almost adds "legitimacy"--or authenticity--to the game's lore.
@@DarkLOREDash The whole of diablo franchise does that, which is at least for me, why the game is so great
@@DarkLOREDash You know what they say, imitation is the greatest form of flattery. :)
Nevertheless, Diablo creators did a fantastic job with the lore.
You should probably look into it for yourself because this dude stretched a lot of the real-world mythology.
you dont understand how good it makes me feel to see new D2 content starting to appear in my recommended
Ya finding Baal in my Old Testament prophets class in college was the reason I passed that class. Couldn’t stop reading the Old Testament looking for andariel and mephisto lmao I even asked my professor if she had ever heard of them.
Amazing. 👌
You were close though with Andariel, as Lilith would have rang a bell.
Mephistopheles is just a fictional character of literature. He does essentially represent a demon and or the Christian Satan.
So technically Baal Diablo and Mephisto all represent the same being in a christian-centric perspective.
In the jewish mythology You may find Lilith, the first woman of Adam. And Mephisto is a the name of the Devil in the book Faust. Mephistopheles is a demon in the german folklore.
Considering they failed science and logic, I'm surprised they just didn't pretend they had heard of them to further brainwash you into believing in their cult lol
I would seriously like a full history of this world start to finish (what we know so far). That would be amazing.
There is a surprising amount of well animated and voiced diablo lore on youtube, just look it up
Rhykker has a bunch
@@creepergaming7926 I honestly do not really care too much for Rhykker. Plus I seen some of his lore videos and I prefer this channels way of telling stories.
Fair enough
Get the book of Cain for a great history of Sanctuary.
Interesting that Baal took on the name Bala as it’s probably closer to the actual pronunciation of his name. In Hebrew/middle east it’s written Ba’al and pronounced more long open A sound, something like “Ba-ahl”. I actually had never heard it pronunced like “Bay-al” until Diablo and American accent :) fun fact haha
Same growing up in a Christian community we called him “Bah-aalh”. When I played diablo they called him Bayl I was quite shook 😂
Plus, Baal being a twisted version of Bala, also mirroring it's very nature, one of creation, the other of destruction.
The word Cannibal also is made of two words : Canaan + baal , implying that the people of Canaan offered human sacrifices to their supposedly god/demon to eat .
@@ankaranirthanagor5786 No, sorry, that is incorrect: Etymology. The word "cannibalism" is derived from Caníbales, the Spanish name for the Caribs, a West Indies tribe that may have practiced cannibalism, from Spanish canibal or caribal, "a savage". (It's also where the word "Caribbean" comes from)
I think Baal was a fitting *final boss* in the main story part of D2. We know Diablo and Mephisto are powerful and terrifying, but there's something extra dangerous about Baal. As the Greater Evil with the least self-control and appetite for complete destruction, he kind of embodies "we've gotta get rid of him. Yeah, we've gotta get rid of them too, but he's at the top of the list."
"Ba'al" = "lord" because he's the boss. Coolest boss in Diablo series.
HOARFROST!
I'm letting you know: yes, please! More videos like these are most welcome
This man reaally enjoys his job. Great content mate keep it up
Moloch is the pagan Deity of order or absolute order, he’s also been referred to as the child eater, he’s actually worshipped by very powerful people also the little hat tribe seem to enjoy his company the most.
Not 'the' but 'a Pagan deity'.
Paganism generally encompasses (almost) pre-Christian deity/mythology, whether European or otherwise.
And Moloch, as far as i know, is actually closer to a deity like Satan than, for example, Loki from Norse mythology.
@@RogueAndroid I thought I’d just lump him in their sense he’s found within many religions
@@RogueAndroid Yes Loki, Set, Enlil, Yahveh, Anu
That's the first thing I'd imagine you going to talk about in the video after the most recent poll ; mythology of one of the three prime evil. Very nice job.
Even though I know you mentionned the same type of history a couple times within precedent videos.
I missed one example of Baal's inspiration, which is probably his depiction as Bael. From the dictionaire infernal which shows him with spider like legs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bael_(demon)
Also... probably important, the Canaanites used to sacrifice babies to him for that sweet harvest. Probably not ideal.
Some say, that this religion survived from Carthage and was adopted by Romans. Later by the Vatican.
That a ritual involving the blood of infants enabled the performer to actually summon and communicate with said entity. Providing a sense of ultimate power. The entity needs just one thing in exchange. To feed off the emotion of fear of the masses. Some even say said religion is still alive and rituals are still being performed in secret.
@@josefrezek5630 I'd go a step further and add that its becomming even more blatantly obvious nowadays , but yeah validation-seeking addicts are too busy chasing those precious 15 mins of fame just craving to fill the emptyness inside them with the fleeting feeling that they matter to someone, anyone really !
Great idea, this would be good for the angels side too if there are any real world parallels. 👍
There are parallels to it on the angel site too. The only thing that is missing is "God", because there is no real GOD, the closest of it is Trag'Oul the Entity described as an Eternal Dragon similar to shenlong in Dragonball, he first apeard in the same time as the realm of Nephalim has been created through the love of the "Arch" Demoness Lilith and the "Arch" Angel Innarius (known as the fallen Angel Lucifer), Tyrael is the Arch angel Zadkiel, Imperius represents Metatron and Malthael is the Archangel Michael while the first nephalim "Rathma" could also represent Michaels attributes, Auriel = Gabriel. But depending on point of religious view between islam, jewish and christian myths theyre attributes arent described as 100% equal, so little bit of interpretation is left over by the Artist/Story writer :-)
@@darkagehibernia4843 cool info, but can you elaborate on why these angel characters represent the real world counterparts? Im ignorant to their biblical history/attributes.
This was fantastic, thank you I love learning about how much transitioned into the diablo lore.
Really impressive history of Baal in the real world Dash! It's worth noting that worship of Baal in the real world was perhaps more horrific than in the Diablo universe.
Always great infotainment, you gotta do more vids like this, I love the discussion of real world inspirations.
More of this please!

Been following your channel for a long time, and these series are something I think should be present. Keep up the good work!
Man I remember hearing that goatmen like gharbad the weak and the moon clan etc are minions of baal they are related to baal and baal in the art work you showed looks like a goatman so make sense now
Looks like The goat man race is a twisted and tortured version of the peoples whose race the Witch Doctor comes from. But from the little I remember, the corrupted Zakarum played a major role in that race’s transformation.
@@omulu4007 I knew it after typing this comment XD
I like this kind of videos. i already heard sth of Baal, but didn't know the connection to Belzebub. It would be cool if you could do more videos of this kind. In Goethe's Faust you find for example the characters of Mephisto and Lilith. Maybe that could be a good source of inspiration for you.
This was super interesting would love to see more of it. Great stuff!

@@DarkLOREDash cant agree more
Ooh I like this sort of video, exploring the mythical inspirations for ingame characters. Cool idea.
I would recommend a demonology lore to be added to this as there are a lot of disturbing and disgusting lords of various kind. Baal / Bael have different origins depending on the religion it will be interesting to see how ancient religions have named and presented such demons. The info in wiki i would say is limited but you can dig deeper. The scary thing about this is that there are real people in our domain that worship these demons and make contracts with them like Faust. Such real cases are as interesting as disturbing. So act on your own head.
Wowee. I definitely like researching & sharing but do not advocate any form of worship, personally. Christopher Lee said it best. Never.never.never
@@DarkLOREDash absolutely agree, it was only a suggestion regarding interesting real live lore connected to demon type games.

Not to mention children were sacrificed too Baal in ancient times.
Of course Baal doesn't exist but when Nimrod (being a descendant of Noah) started his vast amount of unholy acts he said for people to do child sacrifice
I was thinking about that too, but I thought Moloch had cornered the market on child sacrifice? 🤔

Another great video! Pretty interesting stuff. I knew Baal was seen as a demonic entity in Abrahamic religions but had no Idea that the origin was a fertility deity of that things.

Welcome!!
Baal is an ancient Phoenician God- an untapped mythology for games and movies!- and it's not pronounced bale; it's pronounced bAAl and AA is pronounced in a guttural way like in the Arabic Ain. It's not only more authentic, but much more intimidating.
Your picture at 5:55 is Elijah calling down fire to consume a soaked altar to put to shame the 850 prophets of Baal. Pretty freakin' legit.
I appreciate the care that you took with the explanations. Most people would get it very wrong when it comes to the history of the Hebrews.
Very good quick but thorough history\lore
This is probably something that I shouldn't be watching at 3:30 am while trying to sleep, but I just did 😂
I hope that you eventually get through all 7 of them, and maybe Lilith too for good measure.
Thanks for the stuff to listen to!
Where do we find the cinematic footage about Baal that was part of the video? Starts at 1:26
yes where? i didnt know this exist
he commented somewhere that some of it is from Diablo Immortal cutscenes
1:40 ridiculously awesome art of Baal. Love it.
I like your vids, I really do! Only a tiny amount of people go dig that deep to gather solid references. I noticed that D3 got few bosses named from ancient religions such as Pazuzu in Act2 and there's a tragic case of possession in RoS where there's a lady which turn into a succubus, I do believe that Blizz removed that side quest due to the profane story around it.
this was great :D
baal or later on baal hamun was worshipped by alot of civillizations all the way from the middle east to northern africa , believed to be the god of the gods , fertility sky and thunder and the name baal itself is 'lord' or 'owner' 'master'. as a way of submittance many generals and kings had a name that had baal in it , such as Hanniba'l as is the correct way of pronouncing it , the romans after winning the war against the carthaginians claimed the 'barbarians' would sacrifice their own children to baal hamuun , possibly to ruin the image of their defeated rivals even further as they won the war and they write the history , but could also be true as there are many instances of pagan child sacrifice.
It will be nice to hear about all of them, But the next one I don't know mephisto.
I wanna dig into it too!

Hayk is the legendary patriarch and founder of the Armenian nation.
The battle occurred between the dynasty of Hayk and a King Belus (Baal), a symbolic Babylonian/Akkadian God of War.
On August 11, 2492 BC Hayk slew Bel with a nearly impossible shot using a long bow, sending the king's forces into disarray.
Wow dude this content is so good. Thanks for such attention to detail!
This was fascinating! Thanks for this!
Where can i find the diablo lore video that you used in your video?
he commented somewhere that some of it is from Diablo Immortal cutscenes
Baal Was the equivalent of Zeus and Odin for the Arab Peninsula before Islam; he was known as Hubaal with Hu used as prefix for gods and spirits back then.
As for Beelzebub I don't think they're the same because "Zubab" means flies and as mentioned before Baal also means "Lord" so Beelzebub which is originally pronounced "Baal al Zubab" is basically "Lord of flies" it's not the same deity just similar names.
Man I really thought that was the throne room for a minute. I gotta wake up before commenting.

Ahhh, the defiling he-man child-book art style of D3...so unfitting for a setting such as Diablo
That’s an example of what bad management can do to a horror franchise: transform it into a Disneyland tale. World of Warcraft artistry helped the demise.
I'm hoping the title and thumbnail is an homage to Jon Solo and his *Messed up origins* series and the thumbnail format he uses in every video, not just blatant plagiarism. That said I loved the video.
What I like about faith and religions, is that when you look at certain nations, many of them have different culture, but it had to start somewhere.
As a Christian, studying Bible not only as a book, but from spiritual perspective, you can see these 'gods' shape people that reside under their influenced lands. Their way of thinking etc.
You can even feel different when you travel to a different country, which shapes your way of thinking and overall perspective of world. Think of it as a spiritual pressure, that, if you crack, you begin to be shaped in a certain way. The government, ppl, everything.
Ppl think that it's mostly government that applies the laws forcing ppl to do certain things, shaping a society slowly over the years, but you have to consider, that something is shaping the government, and those, who have influence over them.
If you take it that way, soon you will find out that at the end, there is some1 or a group of ppl that have certain visions of how to create a society and what to move and what not to move. Who is shaping them?
Their god, whoever it is.
But you can see who if you look at the fruit they grow. As one genius said once.
Many call that 'god' an inspiration. Creative thoughts. But think about it for a second. How can you think of something if it's not existing in your head?
It has to be planted in you.
Inspiration.
But you gotta see what is the source
Its pretty obvious that Blizzard was heavily influenced by the Abrahamic religions when creating the Diablo series.
Very interesting
Really engaging stuff, Dash! In future entries, I would be interested in what parallels, if any, exist between Diablo’s and Marvel Comics’ Mephisto.
8:25 A minor nitpick: That's a statue of Baphomet, not Beelzebub.
Enjoyable video as always, though!
Thou needest to do this for Path of Exile, brother.
Unless of course thou hadst already done so, in which case may I say.
Good job.

In real history, children were sacrificed in the burning arms of Ba'al - a horiffic fact I don't think you mentioned in the video? A pagan practice that the one true God condemned; indeed it was a practice he had never commanded:
"They have built high places to Baal on which to burn their children in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, something I have never commanded or mentioned; I never entertained the thought."
- Jeremiah 19:5
That's jacked up 😧
@@DarkLOREDash
Well, Yahweh rebuked the Ba'al-worshipers and the practice loud and clear, but the pagans trusted their false gods to bless them for these sacrifices. Today people sacrifice their children in abortion-centers instead (as unpopular as this comment may make me, it is still true and just as horrific).
Can we stop using pagan like it's evil. Look up its definition to my people it literally translates to "they who defend their homeland" in a world of people arguing about race pagan is like a slur if used to describe the worship of evil.
@@ChannelVargar
In Scripture the word pagans means those outside of the true faith. A quick google search leads to definitions of (1) a person worshiping many gods or nature, or (2) someone being outside of the main religions of the world.
You can't just give words new meaning. Historically the word means what it means, and is strongly connected to wierd fertility-offerings etc, as the example with pagans sacrificing their own offspring into the burning arms of the Ba'al (as the depiction in the video at around 5:05 also visualizes).
Where does all this lore come from? Have I just skimmed over it in the game? Or are there official books?
The DEPTH. Great vid
Thank you!
Abrahamic mythology is pretty cool and often creepy AF. Diablo is based on it, as are many games, books, movies, etc.
It's a shame no one really calls it 'mythology' though, as billions still actively worship/practice its 3 main religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam).
