I always thought they used him since he was the strongest of the townsfolk. And that maybe he was still to pure to be turned into a demon, so they did the next best thing, since zombies mostly are more resilient than normal skeketons. With all those information added though, it would make sense - so maybe Andariel got lucky, and got 2 things for 1... not only to compensate for her hurt ego, but in doing so getting the best gatekeeper possible from the townsfolk
I always found it odd that demons kept Deckard Cain alive and killed everyone else.... always had a suspicion that he would betray the heroes at one point.
There is another posibility about griswold beyond sexuality that coincides with old legends. Willpower. Compared with other civilians griswold seem to be very resilient physically and mentally. He confronted at some point the Butcher, But didn't end up as traumatized as Wirt , let alone Farhnham. So Griswold just at a lack of better wording, had balls of steel. And this is why Andariel turned him into a mindless zombie. There is nothing more humiliating for someone like Griswold than becoming a mindless zombie, wich is way more humiliating than what happened to every Diablo adversary wich was either death or becoming a soldier. Andariel was like "Fine, you are not coming to me? you will be my puppet now" Besides, Griswold sexuality wasn't even slightly hinted at. While his bravery was
This is just a theory, but what if Griswold was just stubborn, and not so eager to submit to evil similar to the dwarves in Tolkien's fantasy? Tolkien states that the 7 rings of power given to the dwarves did not enslave them, unlike the other rings of power given to the other races. This was because the dwarves, by their very nature, were stubborn, resistant, and highly uncompliant. That being said, Griswold and the dwarves share many attributes and characteristics such as: both are Scottish, both are burly and stout, both have similar mannerisms, etc. Personally for me, it would make sense if this was the reason why Griswold was not tempted by Andariel. However, this begs the question of how did Griswold become his cursed form if he was so stubborn and resistant? Well, going back into Tolkien's fantasy, the dwarves were not completely unscathed by the rings, as they became more greedy, more isolated, and eventually went insane. Likewise, though Griswold's defense of his purity was completely impenetrable, he was not completely invincible to the curses that the evil ones would plague him with. More than likely, he probably fell in battle and then was resurrected as a tool to carry out Diablo's will. Overall, I think that Griswold was a humble and simple yet stubborn man, who cared only for the ones he loved as well as his craft. Oh! And he was above all *NOT GAY*!
nah i dont think griswold is gay. there are plenty of characters not seduced by andarial. Griswold was made a zombie is because he's the strongest man in the village and thus useful for fighting back the heroes.
Also him not being remade like Bloodraven might also be because he couldnt be corrupted. It took Diablo many years and help of his most trusted adviser Lazarus to break Leoric. If Griswald was cut from the same metal (no pun intended) then there wasnt the time or the ressources to do the same.
Every Diablo 1 hero was corrupted due to their constant contact with the corruption of diablo realm. The heroes of diablo had stronger will than Griswold. If griswould had gotten deeper into Diablo Realm , he would have turned into a personal soldier. Diablo never had a beef with him because while he contributed, he wasn't in the party that slew him. If it was for Diablo he would be dead already like everyone else in tristam. He was made a zombie because Adria was mad at him for not being allured and also telling everyone else at the town to not follow the lights.
There is an old Gaelic myth involving a hero who denied the charms of the goddess of death only to have her spend the rest of his life attempting to slay him. She does everything she can to cause him misery but he succeeds, even in death, as he tied himself to a rock with his own intestines to appear as if he was standing so the enemy would not attack. The hero's name is Cú Chulainn. Griswold denying Andariels charms and any succubi because his iron will, must have irritated her for sure. To become an undead slave forever, wandering what he wanted to protect so much.
This is what Diablo should be about. Not just defeating the prime evils bla bla saving the world bla bla. No simple questions with lore, intrigue and mystic and trying to help ordinary people solve mysteries. It's so wierd why all these cool and interesting quests and content was cut, but nice to see it restored.
I don’t know if this is relevant but when I was a kid and played Diablo, I LOVED reading the in game booklet over and over and over! I remember a little section about Zombies/Undead being the result of someone who is so morally corrupt and/or spiritually impure that the vileness in their soul taints the body enough that evil energies take over and reanimate it. Perhaps Griswold wasn’t as innocent as we believed and he did some vile twisted things?
@@DarkLOREDash With all the lore in just the booklets for Diablo I and II, they should create a TV series and/or a Lord of the Rings miniseries movie that focuses around a very young Jered Cain and the Horadrim hunting down the prime evils. Call it “The Horadrim.” Then again...in this day and age, they would probably make the show about Cain and Tal Rasha being lovers and other irrelevant nonsense. Wokeness is destroying everything these days. Still, it’s a nice dream.
While the concept is nice in itself, I think Griswald was simply enamored with his forge. His life's purpose was not lust, luxury or fame; he only wanted to craft weapons powerful enough to fell the lord of terror himself. Aside from Wirt(Which is ignored), all men there had singular purposes : To cure(Pepin) ,to make profit(Gheed), to protect(Ogden), to learn(Cain), to drink(Farnham) and to forge(Griswald). Griswald being the only one turned is only a testament to his devotion to the forge in life in a sense that he should be turned into one of the things that his weapons were created to destroy.
Griswold struck me as a man who was pious. It was probably a similar situation to Leoric. He certainly talked about the Light more than most in Tristram, and it makes sense if he had no interest in women from a religious perspective. Doesn't mean he was a homosexual.
outside of the fanservice Andariel has to offer , story wise i always found her to be the most mysterious one and the concept art of diablo 4 where she is shown to be kind of held as a prisoner is further proof of the fact other demons might find her too dangerous
There is no mystery at all. Griswald is a Swanson. "Succubi do nothing for me. I like the strong, salt of the earth, self-possessed woman at the top of her field".
Both theories about Griswold being too pure and being interested in men are quite good. But I guess we would need one of the folks responsible for writing the story for the game to explain how was it exactly.
He may have been gay, however like you said, the period wasn't really receptive so I doubt it, for that reason and another, the male PC's aren't effected by Andariel and neither was Deckard Cain or Pepin. It's also possible that Pepin was Griswolds secret lover and Deckard was suffering from performance issues but I guess we'll never know.
Interedting take on Griswold! The firsr Diablo game is absolutely matchless in terms of look and feel. The music in the dungeons alone, good Lord. And the Halls of the Blind.
I am a Diablo gamer since D1. You got my sub for this interesting video. Although i will not be getting D2 Resurrections as i am satisfied with my original copy of D2X (Diablo 2 Expansion). I had it since it came out and it still works good. My earliest memory of Diablo games was Diablo 1 on PC back in 1998 when i was in the 3rd or 4th grade. I saw my friend from school playing it and he was playing as the Sorceror and i had no idea what game he was playing but it did fascinate me. I didnt figure what this mystery game was until i was a bit older. Diablo 1 and Darkstone will always be legends in the gaming community that will forever be remembered and today's games still dont quite top them...regardless who wants to argue with me on this statement.
I think Andariel might have resurrected Griswold as a taunt by turning the most virtuous man in the town into a flesh eating corpse, perhaps in his zombie form he can still craft weapons? Maybe she prefered to turn him into a demon but he was too virtuous. I also don't think he is gay because i remember Gillian or Ogden mentioning that he has a wife that died and that it was a hard hit for him, maybe he loved her a lot, maybe after that he was unable to feel in love again or paying attention to Andariel's shinny lights. However i would like your theory to be true, i think it would be very funny having Andariel feeling like that over Griswold
Interesting.. I always wondered how Griswold has fallen.. This is the most logical answer.. Not becouse Griswold was gay, it is becouse Griswold has been resisted against the temptations of Andariel..Becouse he was a strong willed tough man, that was his nature as a blacksmith. And she was pissed off and punished him.
Somehow, I thought you were going to infer that Gillian is actually Andariel (or a servant) in disguise. Imagine if that's why Adria entrusted her. Imagine if that's why she was communing with the dead when Leah encountered her madness as the return of Azmodan and Belial was eminent.
In WildTangent Game's own dungeon crawler called "Fate" (aka diablo's little nephew), the potion merchant (although sometimes he is even reused as other NPCs) has one piece of dialogue that's an easter egg to Griswold I think. "What can I do for ya?" is that piece, but also they have somewhat similar accents and physical build.
I doubt this is the reason why only griswold got raised as an undead. Iirc lore and story correctly griswold was the only one left in the village who could put up a fight against andariel. He fought in the catacombs with farnham and the others and with farnham being an insane drunk, griswold was probably the only one fighting back andariel. She may have raised him, because he gave her trouble or, because he was just a worthy guard to leave behind and also mock/demoralize cain. But not everything has to make perfect sense tbh, because cain being the only survivor is the biggest plot hole of tristram. After diablo got control of Aidan it should have been his highest priority to kill cain. And even after he sent andariel it should have been her highest priority to kill cain, because it makes no sense to kill everyone except for that one guy, who knows everything about u, assisted in your downfall before, knows how to stop you and made it his job and yet you decide to keep him alive.
The graphics of Diablo II: Resurrected are something else. Even after playing the original game for upwards of 12-13 years, I didn't perceive some story-related details the way the creators of the game intended until I saw them rerendered with modern technologies.
Where are these cut scenes/quests/clips of the townsfolk interactions related to this content? Where is Cain found in a cage and Griswold found to be an undead? Is it in D2 or D3? I have never seen any of this content being referenced in this video… Very intriguing!
The interactions with the townsfolk, as well as Andariel's very existence, is cut content from Diablo I. Undead Griswold and Dain in a gibbet are all from the Tristram encounter in Act I of Diablo II.
I disagree with this. I don't see this as canon. In Diablo 2 it was stated that Diablo himself/ The Dark Wanderer, summoned Andariel to guard the way east. That would mean that there was no way for Griswold to have been transformed by Andariel. Andariel was summoned after the wanderer left tristram and her instructions from Diablo was to prevent anyone from following him. (Side note: He still was followed by Marius, but it worked out for ol' terror boy.) There are other cut quests from Diablo 1 that the Belzebub mod turned back on, that also put key figures in places they shouldn't be. If this was the original intention of the quest before diablo 2, I'm pretty sure it was retconned since the quest was officially cut from Diablo 1. No sir, I think it's much more simple than that. I think that Griswold simply got eaten by zombies and because of the Diablo's power just recently awakened in his town, He didn't stay dead. I think the one thing you got right though is that Griswold has a strong will. I believe the dark power of terror that lingered in town after Diablo left, transformed Griswold after He'd been killed by zombies, because of his strong will that would not be extinguished.
Well... griswold makes gear for you to venture down in the depths of hell... what else do you think he could make to prevent hellish things happening. Besides, his animations aren't biting.. it's punching. so there's that..
I think it should be noted that Griswold as a super unique in Diablo 2 always has the cursed mod affix. Could be the nature of his transformation from human to mere undead, being a type of curse of some kind instead of him just being a reanimated corpse.
Awesome video 😂 I’ve seen your videos pop up on my feed several times but never at a time I am able to watch it fully. Today I was at the gym and clicked this. What a wonderful decision!! I’ll be watching all the ones I’ve missed during my workout sessions from now on! Thank you sir for making these awesome videos!
Great video! I always went with the Pious theroy. Though it wouldn't suprise me if there where more to this since the writers where really clever with the first two games.
I mean he could be gay, but he didn't say he saw andariel or anything just the lights so im not sure sexuality comes in play here. It might just simply be that he had the common sense to not investigate lights in the woods in the middle of the night
I thought there was lore somewhere that said Griswold was a veteran who got injured in combat and decided to set up shop as a blacksmith, then ultimately fell so in-love with his job that Andariel cursed him to be a mindless husk who would never wield a weapon again? Maybe it was some fan fiction I read like 20 years ago I don't remember at this point. I do like the idea though that Griswold is basically the progenitor of the "Begone, thot!" meme.
10:12 all the dark atmosphere of this video is lost after this... And then the 'Bear' 😂😂 I think probably Griswold love interest is a more big woman, as a viking woman, and not a skinny maiden.
Dude, 100% figured the same thing wayyyyy back when after hearing how he describes the black mushroom - for those of you that forgot, I’d recommend going back and checking his dialogue there, because it does kind of come off as a bit... enthusiastic? Now, it certainly could be more of a wink and a nod from the developers playing it for laughs back then, but after eventually playing the Belzebub mod a couple years back and seeing this same cut dialogue from Griswold regarding the Andariel quest, it really doesn’t seem all that far-fetched. And while I could really not care less about Gris’ sexuality, maybe there could be a story connection for this beyond just players’ closer connection to the guy who outfitted us in D1. In any case, I don’t think Griswold actually being intended as gay is as unlikely as some people are adamantly saying.
I'm surprised that the Anvil of Fury didn't have some sort of negative side-effects when used by Grizwold, because after all, he did say it imbued the things crafted on it with "demonic essence".
Hmm, maybe just maybe griswold wasnt tempted because he was an important NPC you cant kill off the blacksmith gotta have someone to repair your equipment, in D2 he wasn't needed to be a blacksmith so turn him into a monster for the players to kill, just to keep some form of congruency marking cain as the only survivor.
I'm sorry all I can imagine is Andarial trying to seduce Griswold, and he responding with (insert the Scotsmans rambling insult from samurai jack for a solid hour)
Diablo literally destroyed the town of Tristram and turned grizwald into a zombie when he tried to stop him, quoting “... and corrupted the last noble hero who tried to stop him.” That was Deckard Cane, when he talks to the player character after being freed from his prison in Tristram. Andariel had NOTHING to do with this in any capacity.
not to shit on your theory but it might just be because griswold is the one we have the biggest connection too from the first one since it him that makes out journey posible if it was ogden that was a zombie i dont think it would have as big an impact
I find it puzzling that just because Grisswold wasn't attracted to her, it only means that he was either too pure or just gay. Maybe it just means that he wasn't into that type of female?
My head cannon is Griwald probably did encounter Andarial and he layed the steel down so hard it messed up her whole power dynamic and she developed some borderline resentment. She wanted to punish him but kept him around in some capacity just in case.
Succubi are intergender, meaning any succubus and transform into an incubus at any time they choose. Griswold being gay would not protect him from the call of Andariel. Griswold resisted her because he was a genuinely good person whos stronger of will and chatacter than let on.
well...there is another possibility...Asexuality ;D (calling it "just strong willed" or "married to his forge" might just be good ways to write around the plain fact)
@@darth0tator so in your opinion, everyone who dedicates their lives to a higher purpose like a monk, priest, knight, scientists etc are really asexual, not disciplined professionals not tempted by primal urges and desires
Griswold isn't/wasn't gay. His love for the forge was simply too much for a succubus to overcome. You dare give apropos to a man loving his wife more than a succubus, but not to a man and his steel? You need to understand the weakness of flesh as opposed to the strength and certainty of steel.
I think he might be immune due to his love for his craft, I believe he never cared about anything but smithing, so her charms were useless... Now, if she was a magic hammer...
Mh new and easier way to Uber Diablo since the "sell soj" event was only created to remove duplicated ones... Go to tristram kill everything and add the tower from D1 and then you are can go through everything there (clear the tower until hell opens etc) and ends on UBER diablo from Diablo 1 - would be a great (but expensive) change where I doubt anyone regardless of old or new communtiy would complain about
Ogden and Pepin seems way more gay than Griswold based on their personality and how they communicate. But then again, people who want to hide it (remain in the closet) may actually behave in a different (more masculine) way on purpose. Why not just ask David Brevik (the head developer of Diablo and Diablo II) to confirm or deny?

And that maybe he was still to pure to be turned into a demon, so they did the next best thing, since zombies mostly are more resilient than normal skeketons.
With all those information added though, it would make sense - so maybe Andariel got lucky, and got 2 things for 1... not only to compensate for her hurt ego, but in doing so getting the best gatekeeper possible from the townsfolk
Griswold was rocking that sigma grindset.
Griswold: *jumps from the counter in a skintight green suit*
Griswold: „I‘m gayyy“
Andariel: „Noooooooooooooooo“
I always found it odd that demons kept Deckard Cain alive and killed everyone else.... always had a suspicion that he would betray the heroes at one point.
He’s the last of the Horodrim. He was likely being tortured in some way for his knowledge because he alone knew much more than any one person.
Let's us recall how Cain died
I thought Dark Wanderer in that time had some old self there and commanded demons to spare him since he dragged them there
@@growingoaks But if that was the case, he would have been dragged along with Diablo instead.
Griswold was just too Chad for Andariel's temptations, that's all.
Andariel was like "Fine, you are not coming to me? you will be my puppet now"
Besides, Griswold sexuality wasn't even slightly hinted at. While his bravery was
It's very fascinating that alot of lore was established in the first game.
Oh! And he was above all *NOT GAY*!
nor heterosexual eitjer, more like completely obsessed with his work and craft
Nah... he is probably a closeted gay like most Republicans. lol
nah i dont think griswold is gay. there are plenty of characters not seduced by andarial.
If Griswold's resistance were due to a preference for men, Andariel would have whistled up some incubi and run the table.

It's so wierd why all these cool and interesting quests and content was cut, but nice to see it restored.
Druid: "I have the ability to summon a bear."
Andariel: "So do I!"
Oh my gosh XD
Thank you for this gem
I don’t know if this is relevant but when I was a kid and played Diablo, I LOVED reading the in game booklet over and over and over!
I remember a little section about Zombies/Undead being the result of someone who is so morally corrupt and/or spiritually impure that the vileness in their soul taints the body enough that evil energies take over and reanimate it.
Perhaps Griswold wasn’t as innocent as we believed and he did some vile twisted things?
It is a great booklet!
@@JARedwolf100 “wokeness is destroying everything” damn lmao facts. We need a good series/movie about the Diablo universe. We got one for WoW.
This looks great and I can't wait to see where they took D4 with the Queen of the Succubus coming.
i am planning on making a d1 remake. i just need money and time
Diablo 2 resurrected is my Diablo dream
I'm sorry
Im gonna play so fudging much when its releases !!!
@Ryan Crump thats gr8 , for me im gonna wait for the Resurrected for maximum enjoyment ;)
Griswold has that gigachad mindset
outside of the fanservice Andariel has to offer , story wise i always found her to be the most mysterious one and the concept art of diablo 4 where she is shown to be kind of held as a prisoner is further proof of the fact other demons might find her too dangerous
She definitely has a lot to offer!
There is no mystery at all. Griswald is a Swanson. "Succubi do nothing for me. I like the strong, salt of the earth, self-possessed woman at the top of her field".
Here I thought his background was Irish
Both theories about Griswold being too pure and being interested in men are quite good. But I guess we would need one of the folks responsible for writing the story for the game to explain how was it exactly.
No one knows but the developers.
True. Hard to randomly tweet @davidbrevik is Grizzy gay or nah?
@@DarkLOREDash worth a shot? haha
@@DarkLOREDash, lol.
Griswold most likely seen enough demons to not me tempted by one.
He may have been gay, however like you said, the period wasn't really receptive so I doubt it, for that reason and another, the male PC's aren't effected by Andariel and neither was Deckard Cain or Pepin. It's also possible that Pepin was Griswolds secret lover and Deckard was suffering from performance issues but I guess we'll never know.
surprisingly worth the 11 minutes. Nice
Grizz is just too sigma to be tempted by demonic thots

“The succubus was barking up the wrong Blacksmith”
This isn’t the phrase I wanted….. Yet, it’s the one I needed.
Diablo franchise has my favorite lore, great video, dude
I love the way you make your videos, truly one of a kind
Thank you!! This is a huge compliment
That yellow cap on your barbarian makes him look like He-Man.
Griswald just doesn't simp
too many speculations, but a good ones, nice video!
Somehow, I thought you were going to infer that Gillian is actually Andariel (or a servant) in disguise. Imagine if that's why Adria entrusted her. Imagine if that's why she was communing with the dead when Leah encountered her madness as the return of Azmodan and Belial was eminent.
I really like ur chanel! All materials regarding diablo are on point. And I like ur voice.
Thank you!
Diablo OG , what a great game, even if you just walk ...... the story and quest , adds so much to D2 , what a great game
Griswold the Grizzly Gay Bear. Works with my fantasy so I'll take it! Cool theory Dash :-)
Thanks mate!
(Side note: He still was followed by Marius, but it worked out for ol' terror boy.)
There are other cut quests from Diablo 1 that the Belzebub mod turned back on, that also put key figures in places they shouldn't be.
I wonder if a Diablo I remake ever happens, will it reinclude all this cut quests as canon? Would be nice.
You can get the bundle on GoG
Well... griswold makes gear for you to venture down in the depths of hell... what else do you think he could make to prevent hellish things happening.
I don't think he is a SUPER unique... just a unique. As I recall, he was actually pretty easy to defeat.
Awesome video 😂
I’ve seen your videos pop up on my feed several times but never at a time I am able to watch it fully. Today I was at the gym and clicked this. What a wonderful decision!! I’ll be watching all the ones I’ve missed during my workout sessions from now on! Thank you sir for making these awesome videos!
i like how the hero just casualy carrys a fucking anvil out of the dungeon xD
And then the 'Bear' 😂😂
I think probably Griswold love interest is a more big woman, as a viking woman, and not a skinny maiden.
We talking Brienne level?
@@DarkLOREDash Very accurate, Brienne level probably. Griswold probably was kinda Tormund Giantsbane.
I'm surprised that the Anvil of Fury didn't have some sort of negative side-effects when used by Grizwold, because after all, he did say it imbued the things crafted on it with "demonic essence".
objects like that rather can imbue evil rather than seep it itself. The objects of power they create on the other hand...
TL:DR Griswold ain't no simp
I'm sorry all I can imagine is Andarial trying to seduce Griswold, and he responding with (insert the Scotsmans rambling insult from samurai jack for a solid hour)
Diablo literally destroyed the town of Tristram and turned grizwald into a zombie when he tried to stop him, quoting “... and corrupted the last noble hero who tried to stop him.” That was Deckard Cane, when he talks to the player character after being freed from his prison in Tristram.
Andariel had NOTHING to do with this in any capacity.
Last noble hero would be the Warrior? Also the lore about andariel is official
Dash: You resisted Andariel? What are you, gay?
Griswold:
not to shit on your theory but it might just be because griswold is the one we have the biggest connection too from the first one since it him that makes out journey posible if it was ogden that was a zombie i dont think it would have as big an impact
I have followed and been a fan of your content for a while now. I Love your work and the passion you put into your content. Thank you 👍
My pleasure!
I find it puzzling that just because Grisswold wasn't attracted to her, it only means that he was either too pure or just gay.
Maybe it just means that he wasn't into that type of female?
I mean, there's a bunch of variables but a succubus is an otherworldly pull. No sane man would risk it for that biscuit
Now I want to play the original Diablo again I’ve haven’t played it since 2 originally released

Fascinating! How do you know that RE incubus?
well...there is another possibility...Asexuality ;D (calling it "just strong willed" or "married to his forge" might just be good ways to write around the plain fact)

Griswold isn't/wasn't gay.
His love for the forge was simply too much for a succubus to overcome.
You dare give apropos to a man loving his wife more than a succubus, but not to a man and his steel? You need to understand the weakness of flesh as opposed to the strength and certainty of steel.
Welcome to 2021 - is this a strong willed, pious and dutiful man? No, he must be GAEH!
It was Grisworld who forged her Nipple Rings... now you know why
I kind of doubt he's gay. Was too busy thinking about working rods of steel instead.
I think he might be immune due to his love for his craft, I believe he never cared about anything but smithing, so her charms were useless... Now, if she was a magic hammer...
It would be so cool if d2 resurrected includes removed quest and expands on old tristam
These days, Blizzard measure quality only by stock growth potential. I doubt they would do anything extra.
There are gays who are just regular guys who are into guys.
The stereotypical effeminate(?) type is misleading.
