On the Hills of the Northern Pentlands

- A walk in the Pentland Hills Regional Park, in the northern section between Penicuik and Edinburgh. We initially make our way by Glencorse Church, and head up a steep narrow road to Castlelaw where we explore the Iron Age hillfort and its underground souterrain. Skirting Castelaw Hill, we then make our way through fields of purple heather, now on a small part of the Pentland Way, to the top of Allermuir Hill, marked on ordnance survey maps as a viewpoint. It does not disappoint. The views from here are breathtaking. Looking south, deep into the Pentland Hills, we can see Turnhouse Hill, Carnethy Hill, Black Hill, Gask Hill and Bell's Hill, all beautifully arranged around the Logan Burn, Loganlee Reservoir and Glencorse Reservoir. The view and arrangement of this small bundle of hills is simply stunning. From there we pass over Caerketton Craigs and make for Caerketton Hill, and the views keep on coming. We can see the the bridges over the Firth of Forth at Queensferry, North Berwick Law, and even mountains far far away, like Ben Lomond and Ben Ledi. We can see what looks like the whole of Central Scotland. From Caerketton Hill we drop down to the ski centre in Hillend Country Park, known as the Midlothian Snowsports Centre. A truly awesome hill-walk with some of the best views in Scotland.
Great vedio. Great 🎶
Whoo hoo Eddie! Beautiful walk. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it.
Great video and I concur, the views are outstanding, I'll add this to my list of places to visit. Thank you Eddy.

Cheers John. It was a stunning walk, and on a decent path. Just returned from another wander in the Ochil Hills and the path was a nightmare. Video in due course.
Great video. Looks like a terrific area to explore. Nae Bridie review & a flapjack revealed?! WooHoo 😂🎉
Cheers Graham. It's a beautiful area of Scotland.
Another good video. And happy birthday. I think it's around now or coming up. Mine's Friday.
Well remembered Mike. Close enough. Happy Birthday when it comes.
Another 'cracking' video Ed. I'm over by the Ochils and had no real idea of the beauty of the Pentlands, not so far away. Must really make a 'plan' to take wife and dog for a walk there. The scenery was awesome, paths look great and mixed with a sprinkling of historical Hill Forts, what's not to like. You got a great day to 'showcase' the Pentlands. I missed not having a pie though...
Cheers Ron. I must admit I was stunned by just how beautiful those hills were - purple heather as far as the eye could see. I'm already planning another trip to that bundle of nearby hills. Can't wait.
Woohoo! I 100 percent agree with you Ed😂😅🇦🇺
I think I'll need to make up my own catchphrase.
Nice one Ed, beautiful views in all directions indeed. I'm heading to North Berwick area in a couple of weeks for a wee break, great to see Berwick Law, I might even climb to the top. I think the coastal regions both on the north and the south sides of the Firth of Forth are pretty spectacular. Most enjoyable, many thanks Ed.
Thanks Dan. You're absolutely right about the coastal areas by the Firth of Forth. It's a cracking part of Scotland.
Pentland is my family name. Quite enjoyed your video. Well done
Cheers. 👍
Hi Ed, nailed it yet again, great views, and informative chat. Yes you are right, you watch other you tubers and you think yeah, I like this, then some weeks months pass, and then you think actually naw, I don't, too in your face with shouty commentary, pointing out the obvious to all who watch, and catchphrases. For you, how about "I've gotta pie" & you can theatrically bound into camera? Nope me neither 😅🤣
Cheers Jim. I'll maybe try an opening hand-stand or something.
very nice !
Wow, the views! Great video with great music, although I was waiting for you to turn the camera and show us the three bridges. You must be as fit as a Mallee bull! I think I'd be struggling to keep up!
Thanks. The views were stunning. A slight wind meant I couldn't zoom in very far and get a close-up of the bridges, but they did manage to sneak in in one shot. Take care.
Good wee walk over The Pentland Hills Eddie, enjoyed your wee video mate. Sadly your wee Rant about English note etc. sadly in England there are still several places that look at you as if you are from Mars if you produce a Scottish note is some shops, And one pub said to me there are too many forgeries to accept them. But anyway my rant over . Stunning views all round I may add. Well done and all the best Andy
Cheers Andy.
Another great video Ed will need to do some exploring on the pentland hills cheers until next time
Cheers Robert. The whole area stunned me a bit. It was just beautiful. Already planning another trip nearby. Take care.
Your closing monologue put me in mind of a book I read a couple of years ago: Caleb's List by Kellan MacInnes. It's a biography of a Victorian mountaineer who made a list of all of the hills that he could see from the summit of Arthur's Seat, and determined to climb them all. It's worth searching out if you haven't read it already.
A nice walk in the Pentlands is from Little Vantage over the Thieves Road to West Linton. You can start from Mid Calder via Calderwood for a much longer walk.
I need to become more familiar with the Pentland Hills. Absolutely stunning. For a while I did have my eyes on a part of the old drove road and West Linton, but I always hit a brick wall as far as buses were concerned. That said, I've got my eye on that little bundle of hills I mentioned at the start of the video. Take care Dougie.
Woo-hoo great video Ed. I’m sure the sun always shines in Scotland?! 😁
I'll need to drink more water so I can do proper woo-hoos.
Love the video! Grew up next to the Pentlands.
Anyone know the name of the song in the video? It’s superb
Thanks Lauren. I can't recall what the song was, but I make the music for these videos myself at home using Cubase Elements software.
Woohoo
Good effort. What bus did you get and what was your route when you got off the bus?
Effort? I'm sort of sensing that I haven't quite hit the spot here. X62 bus from Edinburgh to Glencorse Golf Club. From there you need to head up a minor road by Glencorse Church. From there you need a map, and if you haven't got one then just forget it. The map you need is Ordnance Survey Landranger #66 'Edinburgh & Midlothian area'. Have fun.
@@EdExploresScotland thanks, no criticism meant, just an expression, good effort - well done.
