A senior citizen showing the kids that the body is older, but the spirit is still strong. Go girl !! There are some rough spots, but the fire is still in the belly. I watch the young horses when a cool breeze comes up and they start dancing. The retired horses remember their youth and come out and dance with them. I smiled through this. I'm two years older than she.
I love the way she moves... She's feeling the music. Despite whatever slight imperfections, there's great emotional expression here and moments when her tones simply soars. The orchestra is playing their hearts out for her-more than if this was just an ordinary concert. She has contributed so much to music over her distinguished and celebrated career.
For tone and phrasing, I haven't heard any violinist play the Scottish Fantasia as well as KWC. Nor the Franck Sonata with Lupu. Truly capturing the spirit of the composition.
"Mistakes she made" ... really ??? Instead of paying attention to her "mistakes", I pay attention to her superb technique, musicianship and passion ! She is playing better than ever ! About mistakes ... even if she makes some, who is perfect ?
so beautiful again that the music actually touches me physically again! I was watching the DVD, Violin Masters: Two Gentlemen of Cremona, Vadim Repin said the sound that the best of best instruments and violinists produce can actually be touched physically, that explains why everytime i listen to Ms.Chung play, i will have goosepumps on my arms. Hopefully next year her upcoming tour will go smoothly, love to see her at Carnegie Hall.
I fell in love with Kyung Wha Chung’s Scottish Fantasy because the passion and tenderness in her playing, particularly the third movement. I had her recording but always wanted to see her playing this piece. I am overjoyed to find this video.
Thank you so much for posting this! How wonderful to see Kyung Wha Chung performing again, and still playing straight from the heart ... utterly beautiful!
So happy this masterpiece in phenomenal Kyung-Wha Chung's perfomence was in the list of "recommended" today, when it is raining outside, when nature is "crying".
She is my very favorite! She plays with feeling and with great passion. When I play, I try to play with passion for the music otherwise it is not worth playing at all.
Robby asked who's perfect? HEIFETZ ... that's who. Find his recording of this and you'll know what magnificent perfection is! This was one of his favorite pieces and with Heifetz playing, it's one of mine too!😊
It is true that she is not like what she used to be because she suffered a finger injury which prevented her from playing. It is amazing that she can even play. Great musicians like her experience great difficulties in Li. They are only human. Please respect them.for what they have accomplished and brought great music making to all of us. Are we going to judge them by one period of their life where they experienced difficulties? Horowitz suffered from depression and did not play up to his usual standard as some of you would like to call it. Andrei Gavrilov, the Russian pianist suffered from depression too and people said the same thing about him. He is not the same. As an audience, we are not perfect. Why should we expect these musicians to be perfect?
Chung is my favorite violinist - in my opinion only Heifetz and Oistrakh are in the same league. She combines ardor and control in everything she does.
Circa 6:35 when she changes from ff to subito piano in one bow, that is just awesome. I'd say KWC still rocks at... oh well I shouldn't reveal a lady's age, should I?
Wow, don't go mad at me, I'm saying this because I know her as a violinist with no mistakes, check out her bartok violin concerto no.2 for instance. Such impossible concerto she nails it perfectly. As for the musicianship I don't question, and that's what makes her ony of my favourite violinists
Tecnically she is far from being perfect...but there is something in her playing which nowdays tecnically perfect young violinist can't present... There is such a strong emotion and she knows what she want to talk about!!
Horowitz, Gavrilov battled depression and took time away from playing. Be kind to those who had mental and or physical problems. The human race is not perfect. Never will be. It does not matter how Heifetz played. What is perfection anyways? By the way, Heifetz played the Mendelsihnn Concerto too fast. It is like a car race.
I prefer her not-so-polished playing to that of say Hilary Hahn or Jascha Heifetz, who might be greater equipped technicians but are unable to match Kyung- Wha Chung in musicality, that elusive quality. With such an exciting and passionate interpretation, I am willing to forgo those intonation slips (no one is denying them) as such depth of emotion is a rarity while performances with "perfect" intonation can be heard virtually everywhere. I'm always amazed by her wide range of tonal variation.
violinmusicfan Interesting comments. I agree with you that Heifetz does not play every piece better than others. I like all of them...Sarah Chang, Ray Chen, Kyung Wha Chung, Szymon Goldberg, Josef Hassid, Kreisler, Menuhin, Milstein, Ginette Neveu, David Oistrakh, Michael Rabin, Issac Stern and others that I did not intentionally omit. All of them have different styles. Makes it interesting.
Gorgeous !!!
Ah, thats where I disagree. For me, polished playing does not equal to better musicianship. Playing in tune is necessary for a musical performance but more than that is required, such as dynamism and phrasing. When I listen to her tone, I hear great variations in pressure and more dynamic extremes than average but certainly not just "a bunch of scratches", Her vibrato has always been a favorite of mine, slightly more narrow and rapid but never obtrusive. To each his own I guess :)
I have been a fan of hers for many years but here, right from the beginning the intonatiom is not spot on. I wish she has been able to regain the effortless style of playing that she was able to combine with noble interpretations.
Thanks for the sincerity, apparently everybody is not allowing to criticize this performance in the comment section. Also she tends to be aggressive on the instrument and doesn't let it breathe. I mean the 4th movement is almost difficult to listen to... It' s a pity I loved her Walton violin concerto when young but she didn't really get back in shape ever. Also not a fun of the orchestral mood achieved by his brother, kind of very dark and passionate, I think this piece should not feel like a tragedy but like a very melanchonic and somewhat playful.
Didn't she used to be more accurate with intonation in her earlier years? I listen to recordings and don't remember all the slips that I hear with this.
Yes, but she had a nearly career ending finger injury in 2005 that took her years to recover from. I don't think her technique has been quite as sharp since then, but it's amazing she came back to this level at all.
She had some trouble with the outer movements (intonation and I quite dislike her bow attack sometimes) but overall well played and some moments of great beauty, even in the final fast movement!
She’s the real thing. A tremendous artist- who gives her all to every performance.

Brilliant brother(conductor) and sister performance.
In tears. Lovely. unlike so many modern violinists you know music comes first with this artist.
제가 알기에 클래식은 모두가 대중적으로 좋아할수 있는 음악입니다! 저희 어머님도 바이올린 켜는 모습이 멋지고 소리가 아름답다고 정경화 교수님 연주를 좋아하셨습니다!
She gave me goosebumps! Her passion is so inspiring!
"Mistakes she made" ... really ???

Yes, I agree with you. She was 62 years old in 2012? Her passion to music is beyond description.
I'm just loving to see Ms Chung loving every moment of music making.
Fantastic, heard no one and have listened to many try to play this piece, and none have succeeded until this Lady, Bravo Bravo Bravo
Saw her and her sister Myung-wha Chung, must have been early to mid 70s. Great to see she hasn't lost her touch!

Great! 👏👏👏

Wonderful violinist with her younger brother conducting.
What makes this special is that both she and her brother love Scotland. It shows here.
Listen to the pause between her notes. You can sense the magnetism connecting the notes.
Me encanta el estilo de esta violinista
No matter what... Kyung Wha Chung played with great emotion and conviction lacking in today's violin playing.
