    For years I was amp shopping constantly. Then in 2004 I purchased an Engl Powerball and I have never wanted another amp. I did swap around cabinets and speakers for a while too. About 10 years ago I ended my search with a Marshall 1960A and replaced two of the speakers with an Eminence Redcoat and Patriot and left the other two stock. I love it. I highly recommend mixing speakers of the same impedance in your cabinets.

    The non included z-4 footswitch is worth getting if you plan on gigging with this. Few more options built into the amp are available to you then. Mainly an optional volume boost. as you don’t switch masters when when you change channels using the z-4.

    The Fireball is a great amp. I've had mine for almost 2 years and it's a regular in the rotation!

  • @whiskerbiscuit6674
    @whiskerbiscuit6674 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The 5150 didn't have a clean clean channel because Eddie was raised on single channel hotrodded Marshalls. So he always got his clean tone by backing off his guitar volume. But he liked a little bit of grit on his "clean tone." The amp was designed for him. So he wanted a Marshall-esque Rhythm tone that he can roll off for clean, and then a boosted lead channel (what you'd typically get from putting an od or boost in front) for solo sustain. That's why it's a signature amp. Because it's designed for his playing style.

    • @robertolsen9721
      @robertolsen9721 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a great way to play. It gets clean enough by rolling of. Had the 5150 combo before.

      It's kinda switcheroo with mesa boogie and engl. The mesas are cheaper in US, pretty hefty in europe and rare second hand, engl is pretty reasonable in europe and easily the best amps to hunt for on the used market

    • @slavesforging5361
      @slavesforging5361 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah, finding a second hand Engl here i the states is rough, and even if you do find one, it's going to cost almost as much as it would new, which is way more than a mesa here. A friend of mine had a powerball 2 and an ironball that i got to record and blend with my mesa's for a demo, and the results were pretty amazing. they blend with recto's freakishly well, ironically since one or the other is hard to get no matter where you live.

    • @metalvisionsongcontest7055
      @metalvisionsongcontest7055 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      darillio That's why Mesa has a huge "assumption of quality" over here in Europe, when ENGL and the Marshall JVM are actually on par with them. Personally, I consider the Rectifier sound too compressed, good for open power chords, octaves and single-note riffs, but lacking contrast and definition when it comes to palm muting vs. open. But of course, I am biased not to like Mesa here in Europe 😉. Because if I did and I wanted to get one, it would cost me a fortune. Would be interesting to see how amp choice influences songwriting, though, especially when it comes to a Europe vs. US comparison.

      @Aaron-zh4kj 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anthony Farrish So I've tried both the el84 and 6L6 (Mk II) 50 watt 5150's. I can tell you I've played the el84 only a few times, while I ended up buying, traveling, and gigging heavily with the 6L6, and I've played every genre imaginable with it (metal, hard rock, worship music, blues, shoegaze, goth, etc.). I think the 6L6 has a bit more punch and bite to it, but let your ears inform you with the demos online. I actually bought the 6L6 before ever playing one. I had only ever played the el84 50 watt before. And yes, that clean channel sings. It won't sound textbook status EXACTLY like a Fender amp, by the standards of some fender amp connoseurs, but its got enough of the clean fender warmth for my ears. Better yet, it's even got a gain and master volume!
      Edit: Concerning an AC/DC tone, the blue channel with the gain dialed back can definitely recreate a lot of those old marshall sounds, despite being a more modern voiced high gain amp. Keep in mind those old marshalls had el84's, so if that's your mojo, maybe look at the el84 5150's to create that AC/DC sound, but of course, let your ear inform you ultimately. Hope you find the best amp for you!

    You hear a lot of people bitching about Fireballs and Powerball 2 saying that they don't cut in a mix and the studio engineers hate them. I've never encountered that phenomenon.. and I don't know what the hell they're talking about. I used to hear people saying the same thing about dual and triple rectifiers years ago. they'd always be telling people to get a 5150 or a 6505 + don't get me wrong I love the Pevey amps too... but I'd much rather have an engl Powerball 2 than a 6505+

    • @ordohereticus3427
      @ordohereticus3427 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s mostly nonsense rooted in the very first Powerball 1 version (not even valid with later iterations of the Powerball 1) and the old Fireball 60. Something to do with their voicing and transformers not being ideal. That said, every version since has been great and the Fireball 100 possibly has the most open voicing with great midrange and possibly the most heavy voicing of all ENGL offerings, with the Powerball II being a refined and more detailed alternative that also does well for recording purposes. They don’t just hold up the same with the 6505/5150 amps, but if dialled right, can even surpass, not that it’s needed.

      Had one too. It was verry hard to part with it, but it is just not pratical for a small band to allways carry a heavy 100 Watt Amp around that could fail you in the worst possible moment because of the tubes. If my budget rises again, I will probably get an E650 again that just stays in the rehersal room.

      Dude, the 60 is a fire-breathing hellspawn. What really puts it over the top is a set of 5881 power tubes and maybe an mxr graphic eq in the loop if you’re feeling adventurous. The difference between 60 and 100 watts is really just down to a few decibels and a little less headroom. I’m sure the 100 has some minor tweaks that Engl wanted to make but the 60 is every bit as savage. I’ve been playing mine for over a decade and haven’t had the urge to “upgrade” at all. I’ve probably bought ten amps since then...some fenders, some class a stuff, some pedal platforms. But the fireball 60 always stays for my heavy stuff.

And man, that amp does metal!! Is like they put the name after a wizzard skill. The song of Symphony X recommended, being the theme related to fire, is Inferno (Unleash the Fire). That riff of the verse is epic. In that album he used a dual rect too... so you can hear Set the World on Fire ( the full song, not the video one) and you will hear pure Engl sound.

    Which 25 watt ENGL would you recommend? The ironball or the fireball 25?

    • @porcubot
      @porcubot 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Ironball is a bit of a lower-gain amp. It's also an EL84 amp, whereas the Fireball 25 is a 6L6 amp.
      I love my Ironball but if you want super-high-gain it needs a little assistance

    Hey Glenn, ever tried the ECC88 tube in a guitar amp?

  • @charmanfer
    @charmanfer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Glenn! What do you think about the opinion that if an amp needs an overdrive to sound tight then it's not a good amp? Bought a Mesa Trem-o-Verb, I'm in love but it definitely needs a boost for what I want to use it for.

    Should also compare it to the JOYO Bantamp Firebrand since you already have some. I wonder if it’s a decent enough copy for $150.
