One of the greatest moments in musical history is this version of Dancing. Just when you think Jerry had it in high gear, he takes it up to another plane. Also one of the best envelope (Mutron) solos he has ever done and unmatched by anyone IMO. And the tightness and syncopation of the band here is mind blowing. Of course the whole night was magical. My son just graduated from Cornell in December and his ceremony was in the hallowed Barton Hall where this show took place. 😇
Every amateur guitarist and Dead fan has sat down at some point to learn Dancin and come across that chromatic walkdown section and stumbled around on the neck for 10 minutes like "wtf?", rewinding over and over again. Somehow comforting to see a pro have the exact same reaction. Keep doing what you do man I enjoy the channel.

This version of Dancing 5/7/77 is for me the best song they ever played. I've seen about 350 dead concerts. I paid attention. Glad you got on the bus. Love what yo do.

47 year old Head and permanently "intermediate" guitar player here, enjoying watching your journey through this stuff more than I can even tell you. Please keep it up!
Really enjoying your videos and learning great info along the way. Jerry is getting that sound by using his MuTron envelope filter (auto wah) in the down sweep position. Up sweep produces the typical “wah” sound like he uses on Estimated, Fire, Catfish John, etc. The rarely used down sweep mode reverses the effect to produce a “how”-like effect as heard here.
years and years I spent listening to the same songs over and over on my Maxell tapes, each time focusing on a different band member and THEN listening to soak them all in at once. Some mind blowing moments just me and my tape deck I've had.
Absolutely love the 5/8/77 run-through, keep it up! Your discovery of the Dead is so authentic and fun to watch, and your insights into the music are exactly what I've been looking for. They are the quintessential American Band. Thanks Mike, hope you had a happy Memorial Day.
What if disco didn't have to be pop music? Here is the answer. Dancin' from 77 is a beautiful fusion of disco and psychedelia, performed live. It demonstrated the unfulfilled promise of the genre. Who knew? It seems they did. :)
Nice job Mike! Love this version of this song. I was holding my breath to see how you would react to the crazy changes at the end of that epic groove! It’s just so crazy. Makes no sense but like all things Grateful Dead, it somehow works👍🏻😎
Michael, I have been watching your channel since your started diving into the dead as a non guitar player. After 25 years sitting in my father's recording studio, I am finally picking up the guitar my patents bought me for my 15th birthday. I am going to learn to play on the sly and surprise the hell out of my dad if and when his band Achilles Wheel ever plays another live show. I will be visiting your website after work to get started. Thank you!
My first reaction to reading the song selection was “cheesiest / worst song selection ever “ but then , I watched the video and heard the fire 🔥 and now LOVE this tune . Great call. Risky based on disco 💃! Ha
Haha I really enjoyed watching you lose your mind over this. It’s one of those tunes where if you’ve heard them do it so many times it just comes a lot more easily during that weird interlude with the major third harmonies. Thanks for all the great content. Looking forward to the rest of the Cornell show vids. Cheers!
Your Cornell videos have been awesome, and I'm always looking forward to the next one. So glad you thought to do this and keep up the great work! Rock on!
Michael it warmed my heart to see a seasoned guitar teacher struggle to figure some of the crazy changes the Dead worked into the Jam on this tune. The fact is that I have been playing guitar and Grateful Dead music for a long, long time and I wouldn't even attempt to figure it out. Once again, I love what your doing and so enjoy watching you discover stuff about the Grateful Dead universe that I have been enjoying for many years. Keep them coming!
I am truly loving you're videos and love that you are going to do the whole cornell 77 show. I CANNOT wait for the brown eyed women video, hands down one my favorite jerry solos I've ever heard! Keep up the killer work man
Seeing these reactions from a professional guitar teacher gives me a whole new appreciation for the Dead’s music. I casually play guitar, but would love to learn more.....and you provide me with inspiration to follow up on that thought. I really enjoy these Grateful Dead videos you do, so happy that you found them. I’ve been listening to them for 30 years and still get so much Joy from their music. Thanks Michael🙏❤️
So good. Love when you stop to break down the melodies and theory for us. I can let it play on my own. I come here to get better at guitar and understand my favorite songs better. Thank you.
Ive been watching your videos like an addict since the 10/18/74 Morning Dew (cant wait for this Dew). Thanks Mike! 1. I love watching your excitement for stuff we all know so familiarly. Thats the best! 2. re Phil: yes, as it's said "when Phil is on, the Grateful Dead are on" 3. re Jerry: you nailed it with your Loser (or was it Row Jimmy) comments. Soul!! Jerry gets so much soul out his voice and guitar. The guy was amazing. (Listen to Shining Star 11/9/91 JGB) 4. Can't wait for you to hear the climax of this Morning Dew. And as others have said, let the Scarlet>Fire transition go through interrupted once. It's seamless perfection. 5. Mike, Great breakdown. This is the second time I've gone through it. but as far as the envelope follower... Well that's the main reason he had his guitars wired the way he did. That effect was dependent on the level of signal going into it. So when you would turn the volume down, it wouldn't work. ---depending on how you had it set up. BUT... with that internal guitar pre-amp set he had, well then the auto wah got the full signal no matter what his guitar volume was set at, so it always did the 'wah' sound no matter how he had the the guitar volume set. (Secret knowledge here, shh.) Keep up the good work!
Amazing! I’m a student of your lessons and really appreciate that teaching and learnings ive gotten from you. I’ve played on and off my whole life, but really feel I’ve learned so much in the last couple months really focused and going through lessons sequentially. Hope you and yours all well!
Michael, I can't tell you how much I enjoy and look forward to your Dead videos. I woke up this morning thinking of and anticipating your reaction to the whole second set. I've been playing these songs for a long time but one of my biggest Dead related pleasures these days is seeing the uninitiated become initiated. I also thank John Mayer for that, even though I'm not a big fan of his, because he's introduced this music to a new universe of fans. This music will be considered classic Americana, just like Woody Guthrie, Sachmo, Dylan, et al.. I'm old but this music keeps me young at heart.
Wonderful breakdown as usual..when I saw the Dead live I always loved the way I could watch any one member of the band and listen to their contribution to the whole sound coming from their amazing sound system. So happy you are going through this whole show .. 🙏⚡️🇺🇸 Bass Great, Lesh Philling.💯🔑
Much better with the audio fixed. Thank you! This is awesome. So fun to watch. I listen to this version any time I need energy to power through something. Can't wait to see your reaction to the Phil Bombs on Morning Dew! I echo the other comments that the Scarlet > Fire should be a single video. Thanks for making these.
Just stumbled on your channel today and you do a hell of a job breaking things down. And seen the praise you gave tyler childers and colter wall for their story telling abilities. One band that you may enjoy is, the steel woods. They have one song that is called “without you” that helped me get through a hard time in my life. But keep up the great work!
You are the man Mike! This is an amazing ride to be taking through this set. Can't wait for the rest of them. Almost lost it when I thought you did 2 in one day.
I’ve been looking for a video or ANY insight on this. Your reaction to this is my reaction and I’ve heard this version maybe 100+ times. Thanks for the video
Michael, I appreciate what you're doing a great deal and it's entertaining to see you go through these. That said, I would recommend, FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT, listening to these tunes all the way through once before going back on camera to break them down. I understand the entertainment value of watching you experience this stuff for the first time on camera, and your chops are impressive. But you only get to experience this stuff for the first time once, and I know that experience is severely effected by stopping the music every 30 seconds to break it down. I would encourage you to get yourself into a good head space, and listen to the whole second set of this show, by yourself, for your own enjoyment, before going back to tackle it on camera. It's not like you're going to have it all mastered and you're viewers are all gonna holler "cheater!" Thanks for doing what you're doing.
Hey Michael, loved that so much, even (esp) when you lost the plot just a little there near the end, lol, just shows you're human too, like the rest of us! Kinda like a great actor who forgets lines and has to improv. I'd never heard them do that in that song before either. Wacky but wonderful. Wow. That said, I'd love to hear you articulate, after the fact, what was really going on there musically in the part that kinda stumped you, and why it was so hard to follow! That too might help the mere mortals among us.. Major (minor, and dominant) thanks for all you do. Keep doin' what u do!!🎸🎶
Really love the passion dude! And the longer episode! Never gave loads of time to this stuff yet for some reason! Will definitely be looking for more! 😊
Phil for the win! Can't wait for your reaction to Phil driving Scarlet/Fire and Estimated!!!!! Love your vids, helps my bass playing, and is just fun to watch you get hooked on the Dead. Thanks!
I don’t know what I found funnier: Your facial expressions or comments upon being frustrated! 😂 Normally, I would have skipped a video after so many practice runs. But, I enjoy the channel so much I didn’t mind!
I don’t play guitar, so I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. You might as well be speaking Swahili. But it’s a Jerry/Dead related video and your passion is infectious, so I’m watching! 😂
I'm on the edge of seat every Cornell song. Fantastic. My buddy Lance played the Jerry part in our band. He got just as upset as you did trying to figure this out. Not sure of sound effect name, but he got on one of those old MP2s i think.
Hang on tight dude and get ready with your A game because every one is on pins and needles waiting for you to take on scarlet/fire. My bet is your subscribers will sky rocket the following day you post it! Love your videos!
THIS IS A SPECIAL VERSION! I FOUND IT EARLY 2000S AND WOULD PUT IN CD PLAYERS FOR CAR RIDES SO I COULD ONLY LISTEN TO ONE SONG WITH A MASTERFUL GUITAR SOLO THAT WOULD TAKE ME FARTHER AND FARTHER INTO MUSICAL SPACE THE MORE I LISTENED TO THE SONG!!
Great vid. Maybe my favorite one because it’s the first one done with the extended jamming that made the Grateful Dead famous and created the jam band era. The effect is the muTron envelope filter except with the drive on the down position. He mostly used it in the Up position except for this song and a few others. You will hear it again when you get to estimated Prophet from the same show. The funk jam at the end is, I believe, in ninths and is relatively simple once the pattern is set they just repeated two times
My favorite version of this song- not in my top 20 or even 30 dead songs (I know- it's a cover) but this version lands in my top 10 list of live versions because it's just so damned funky and fun to crank up and shake your bones to. Just turn the volume button clockwise and try to remain seated or bob your head like an idiot- impossible! The hardest part when listening to this is trying to keep the volume at a safe level and or not snapping your head off of your neck as it bounces along with the beat that punches you square in the face for a full 16= minutes. Looove it!
Personally, I think the Dancin on Dick’s Picks 3 from Pembroke Pines 5/22/77 is far more funkier and superior in my opinion. m.th-cam.com/video/DeXezBHdJ94/w-d-xo.html
That ending is killer your close 1st x that's good that's the magic of the Grateful Dead hope you come back to it I've always said the grateful dead will make you a better player.
It seems my earlier comment vanished, so I had to puase earlier for family tending, but Michael, coming in ice cold I knew you were going to get twisted up at the key changes. Yes they pull that off everytime during this era. You should check out when they played this in 67-68, way different with Phil doing background vocals. Digging what you do Michael, still cant wait for Lazy Lightning/Supplication, you'll love it
Sometimes I try to listen to one of them individually for a whole song. It is so hard to do though. I'll be listening to Brent absolutely slaying a song then something Bobby does catches my ear and I lose focus. Nevermind a non-musician like myself trying to separate Billy from Mickey lol. I came across some youtube videos of Jerry's guitar isolated in a bunch of songs. It was really cool to hear and it further made me realize how much each member of the band adds to the whole tapestry. Yes, even Donna who I happen to think was such a great compliment to Bobby's voice especially.
@@lambert13 Listen to the NFA>GDTRFB from Skullf*ck. Jerry is one channel and Bobby the other. You can really hear the interplay that made them so special.
To get more of this kind of Jerry stuff (which I think was often on motown material), you should listen to some of his live at Keystone Berkeley recordings with Merl Sanders, John Kahn, and Bill Vitt. Saw him there many times and it was always killer.
They use to play a non disco version in the late 60s early 70s and it rips. Things go in a completely different direction. They brought it back in the mid 80s in a more traditional arrangement.
Great ending one favorite segway and know it's not easy I still working parts you are doing good but not easy that's what the secret was we were a private club for years, you are fun to watch and I learn a few things awesome job keep it up.
And I will go on public record to say...Phil was as foundational and fundamental to the ‘Grateful Dead’ as Garcia was. Dead and Co fans listen up. Lesh Garcia and Weir are the Holy Trifecta. Anything else is just something else. Dig baby?
Hey I I don’t know if anyone said it yet but that effect is the original mu-tron envelope filter. You can’t buy them anymore. They have great circuitry. Great video on this one - I jammed with ya !
@Michael Palmisano As always, love your channel, love this series. Here are some things I noted during this video: 1. Jerry's effect is a Mu-Tron III envelope filter / follower. It was used by a lot of musicians in the 70s like Stevie Wonder and Frank Zappa. Electro Harmonix has a pedal called Q-Tron that is inspired by it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mu-Tron 2. I have never heard Jerry solo the melody on this tune, always the "texture" type of approach as you describe it. This is one of the choice moments in a Dead set for people to really lose themselves and dance, like with Shakedown Street, and they usually stretch it out in a similar fashion to this version. 3. I loved hearing you struggle with the changes. I haven't tried to learn it, but I'm sure it would take me quite a while. That point after the extended jam where they hit the chromatic changes to distantly related keys is one of the few times the Dead ventures into the realm of progressive rock / fusion that was popular during that time. If you like that kinda thing I highly suggest you check out King Soloman's Marbles / Milking the Turkey, it's a Phil Lesh instrumental, my personal favorite is off of 8-13-75 th-cam.com/video/mtFeMV_Ua9k/w-d-xo.html. Although Jazz is Dead (the gratedul dead instrumental band with Jimmy Herring) has a pretty killer version th-cam.com/video/pCVyHCve-S8/w-d-xo.html It's an intense tune so proceed with caution... I'd like to contribute to GuitarGate, I've recently become underemployed and so I've got some time to study guitar. I'm a music major from a while back, I think we are the same age, but I've really lost my chops in recent years. I believe you have some country lessons, chicken pickin type of licks, I think I will start there. Anyways, keep up the good work!
Just found your channel so greetings from the late spring of Scandinavia. Being a primarily acoustic, classical, fingerstyle, European folk and metal guitar player (couldn´t play a decent blues, bluegrass or country song to save my life :) ) I just watched this and your video on Sabbath War Pigs at Ozzfest and this gave me an idea. Having grown up myself on everything 70s classic rock from Sab-Zep-Purple to Allman Brothers and the totality of everything that came our way into Europe during the love boom of the sixties I also turned into a complete metalhead at a young age during my teens in the late seventies´/ early eighties´ metal boom. I´d like to introduce you to a style you most likely don´t know of and haven´t listened to before,- just because you might be the guy to appreciate what you are listening to, so here goes: Operatic Symphonic Progressive Melodic Euro Folk Metal. Biggest and most popular genre of rock music on the international scene,- been developing and going on for more than twenty-five years and though growing in popularity in the US and Canada virtually nobody outside of a devoted fan base in the northern regions of the Americas knows it even exits. A uniquely European style of metal based on roughly 800 years of folk music from appr. 45 different countries and something like sixteen different cultural regions plus 400 years of classical music tradition and composition all of it fused with metal to become our version of contemporary highly melodic metal. Since all of this historic music is prevalent and all around us we all grew up with folk and classical music and don´t have an "artsy" or " fancy high culture" feeling about it,- it´s simply our old music , and as it is still being performed everywhere,- though we´ve also been exposed to everything US made, - what European musicians have done in order NOT to play and perform some watered down version of what is essentially US genres of music ( rap, country, RnB, roots americana, blues, southern Rock, AOR rock etc. ) is look to our own roots to see what value we might bring to the table ourselves,- and this journey and development has led to a folk revival and several new metal genres all fused into one big outpour of music. If you don´t know these bands and this music you should,- if for nothing else then simply to know it´s out there. The reason I find this important to tell you people in the US about is because I´ve watched many a US YT musician´s channel discussing the total absense of rock music in the contemporary US radioland,- and people are complaining that rock music is dead,- well it´s not, especially not outside of the US and Canada,- but maybe the US scene has grown stale and a little set in its ways? Going from folk over melodic folk metal to melodic metal on to symphonic metal and finally to operatic symphonic metal in a mix of original languages and English,- an introductory playlist: 1. Dead on Bret. Dancin isn’t top 50 but this particular one is numero uno for me
With ya 1000% !!!!!
this song rips my soul in two then pairs it back together seamlessly

Phil is dropping bombs all over this track. The lick that starts at 23:55 is one of my all time favorites, just how Jerry ends that build up!

Phil is the man my favorite in the band so unique and jenky with his playing nothing like it :)
Phil's bass line opening Scarlet/Fire at this show was incredible. He was an absolute beast in this show.
Phil Zone!
Agreed same here
Jerry’s using a MuTron in Down mode. We’re used to hearing them in Up mode because nobody else really figured out what to do with Down mode.
Yeh i just came on here to tell him. I use a reverse polarity to get the sound with my envelope.

I love how excited Michael is about all the little things! Really brightens my day! Everyone should learn to appreciate the little things in life..
I love these videos. Your reaction to the walkdown at the end was very awesome
Phil is a freight train! God bless the Grateful Dead! Favorite Dancing maybe except one other ever. Great stuff
I love the Jack Straw from Cornell as well. I know how to play it, but would love your take on it. Thanks for another great vid.
This is the standout song of the show for me - thanks for the vid Mike - love your channel!
Dude, we play this and it took our band several hours just on the jam to get the groove right - once we nailed it, nothing but smiles!
I know. It's such a hard thing to do. I feel very conflicted on this matter!
This is my all time favorite Dead jam! When i heard Dead & Co do it last year at Wrigley, i Loved it!!
You always look excited reacting to these tunes, but in some placeson this one you kinda look like a baby hearing music for the first time. Love it!
Phil had his eightieth birthday show about two months ago. Worth watching on YT
I knew you’d love how Phil kicks things off on this one. Love me some Phil!!!
Not sure of sound effect name, but he got on one of those old MP2s i think.
dude that was so much fun to watch! Thank you so much for those videos!
Hang on tight dude and get ready with your A game because every one is on pins and needles waiting for you to take on scarlet/fire. My bet is your subscribers will sky rocket the following day you post it! Love your videos!
For Deadhead guitarists, fun begins at 30:40. :-) Michael, I thought you did an excellent job with that breakdown for your first listen. Chapeau!
Thanks Mike! Much easier to follow the chromatic part at the end with it synced up! I'm looking forward to seeing what song you choose next!
There’s a subtle drum fill at 20:45 that trasitions it from a great mellow jam into a cacophony of awesomeness
Tracks like this showcase just how important having that SOLID low end is for the guitar to dance around.
I would LOVE to watch a podcast/videocast with David Lemieux and Michael Palmisano together analyzing shows.
Jerry was asked in an interview what he played for every night. His answer.....my life!
I love when you say "their just swimming" ! Great stuff!
This whole album is the Dead's absolute Zenith. The whole band was on fire and Jerry was communicating straight from the source.
That pedal is an envelope filter. Jerry uses it on Estimated Prophet also which you’ll hear in the second set. Love the vids man.
I always knew this misic was special. Nice to hear it broken down this way. I appreciate learning just a little bit more about why. Thx 💀🌹
Keep making videos! Grateful Dead fan here but you make amazing videos. Keep it up man!
Thanks...nice job...back then , I was a drummer and I was not impressed , but now I’m a songwriter, on uke! I appreciate their great songwriting
the video that I've been waiting for months
My favorite version of this song- not in my top 20 or even 30 dead songs (I know- it's a cover) but this version lands in my top 10 list of live versions because it's just so damned funky and fun to crank up and shake your bones to. Just turn the volume button clockwise and try to remain seated or bob your head like an idiot- impossible! The hardest part when listening to this is trying to keep the volume at a safe level and or not snapping your head off of your neck as it bounces along with the beat that punches you square in the face for a full 16= minutes. Looove it!
Best Dancing version, period! IMHO. First heard this bootleg in college in 1989. Dancing was imprinted in my brain until the CD became a reality..
Great job Michael!! I can't stop laughing. The impressive thing is that they were all on the same page.
And bro....you really are a brilliant fucking guitar teacher. Best I’ve ever seen! Bravo! Thank you
It seems my earlier comment vanished, so I had to puase earlier for family tending, but Michael, coming in ice cold I knew you were going to get twisted up at the key changes. Yes they pull that off everytime during this era. You should check out when they played this in 67-68, way different with Phil doing background vocals. Digging what you do Michael, still cant wait for Lazy Lightning/Supplication, you'll love it
This is gold. thank you for doing this.
Lol- we loved that they baffled you! Great job.
“Listen to everyone individually for 30 seconds” I want to but Jerry won’t let me!
YOU know, I know.
this is a good one : Verlon Thompson The Guitar
I had the exact same 'problem"!
I've been waiting for this one!
To get more of this kind of Jerry stuff (which I think was often on motown material), you should listen to some of his live at Keystone Berkeley recordings with Merl Sanders, John Kahn, and Bill Vitt. Saw him there many times and it was always killer.
Absolutely love the GD vids, thank you!
They use to play a non disco version in the late 60s early 70s and it rips. Things go in a completely different direction. They brought it back in the mid 80s in a more traditional arrangement.
@39:30 crazy time in the grateful dead world , lol. now i know what to request if i see you live : )
"Sweet Baby Jesus!" What a blessing it was to occasionally walk out of a show with that thought bouncing thru your skull
Great ending one favorite segway and know it's not easy I still working parts you are doing good but not easy that's what the secret was we were a private club for years, you are fun to watch and I learn a few things awesome job keep it up.
And bro....you really are a brilliant fucking guitar teacher. Best I’ve ever seen
And I will go on public record to say...Phil was as foundational and fundamental to the ‘Grateful Dead’ as Garcia was. Dead and Co fans listen up. Lesh Garcia and Weir are the Holy Trifecta. Anything else is just something else. Dig baby?
And that's what made Furthur SOOOOOO much better than D&Co.
If the thunder (phill) don’t get you then the lightning (jerry) will
And Billy the K...
There's a reason he is on (multiple) list of top bass players ever. AND as far as innovation- fugettaboutit! NO ONE EVEN CLOSE!!
@@drew4utube he is a god of Thunder walking among mortals.
Truly
Hey I I don’t know if anyone said it yet but that effect is the original mu-tron envelope filter. You can’t buy them anymore. They have great circuitry. Great video on this one - I jammed with ya !
Now I understand how my ass made the moves I didn't know I had!!! Thank you for posting this!
@Michael Palmisano As always, love your channel, love this series. Here are some things I noted during this video:
1. Jerry's effect is a Mu-Tron III envelope filter / follower. It was used by a lot of musicians in the 70s like Stevie Wonder and Frank Zappa. Electro Harmonix has a pedal called Q-Tron that is inspired by it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mu-Tron
I´d like to introduce you to a style you most likely don´t know of and haven´t listened to before,- just because you might be the guy to appreciate what you are listening to, so here goes:
Operatic Symphonic Progressive Melodic Euro Folk Metal.
Going from folk over melodic folk metal to melodic metal on to symphonic metal and finally to operatic symphonic metal in a mix of original languages and English,- an introductory playlist:
