Garcia's solos are so profound, they can be soul splitting, and magical, especially to those listening from another dimension. I often saw grown men and women weeping in ecstasy at his shows, like their soul has been renewed. It didn't work all the time but when it did.... magic.
The challenge with trying to replicate any of this, is that Jerry had no desire to go back or revisit. It is great to watch you try to catch the rabbit. Your fluster only confirms why we loved Jerry; he was always looking for something different. Sometimes it didn’t work out, but when it did... that’s the magic.
His phrasing and note choices are not at all what one thinks of as guitar-centric....the world is full of players with the same vocabulary and musical frame of reference but Jerome is a true original.

This was just the right time for this posting! Not to be a downer, but earlier this afternoon my family had to say goodbye to one of our beagles. The other passed a couple years ago, and lord you know they made a fine connection. They loved each other. It's amazing when you see what Jerry was really doing to be in the moment and also have the skill. As a trumpet player myself, I'm blown away. You're a Deadhead bro, it's all about the journey.
You know the “without a net” cd. That is how the Dead played live. They would go off in a direction and not really know where they were headed. Sometimes they crashed to the ground with a thud, but most nights they danced on the wire and mesmerized all in attendance. Jerry was the primer of that but the band would all add to the acrobatics. There was nothing like a Greatful Dead show. Notice “show” not concert. “Enjoy the show man.”
This was the first Dead song which spoke to me as well, I picked this up a couple of years ago and then found Dead and Co.... Since, my daily music intake has been 60% Dead and I too have had a huge musical epiphany. Everything about this track is brilliant!

Robert Hunter wrote the words and music to it Must Have Been The Roses, and the lyrics for They Love Each Other and Might As Well. As far as i know the only song Grateful Dead song that Garcia wrote both the words and music for is Cream Puff War.

There’s a podcast interview of Mayer talking about this very thing about Jerry. He said something along the lines of “Jerry was working in MOLECULES” I get this now. The solo of TLEO is a great example of that.
That's a wonderful analogy about the little rabbit lost in the woods; when I first watched your beaming smile starting around 13:15 during Jerry's solo, I was thinking, "Is he trying not to laugh at how something can simultaneously sound so beautiful AND inept?" You are far more charitable and thoughtful than I.

That was without a doubt the best description of Jerry's style I have ever heard. The band had such a great groove together. The shows were such an experience. Michael, Happy One Year Dead, my friend!! So proud you found your way onto The Bus! It's obvious you "get it!" EVER FURTHER!! Your giant, rumbling, airplane analogy is spot on, and your joy at the nuances make it obvious that you will be Forever Dead! Jerry not only liked to walk out onto the ledge, but he liked to JUMP, having faith in the landing! I think he took it as a personal challenge, and even a game. You could tell by the looks and the nods sometimes. "Whew, made it back boys!" He loved to color outside the lines, and that's the magic!! That's why you can listen to these songs hundreds of times and never tire of them!! It's those broken bones and gut punches that's missing in so much of today's music. It's HONEST! And the fact that you are always on Bobby and Phil, well, what a supporting cast is all I can say...... I was fortunate enough to catch them on 5/17/77, in Tuscaloosa Alabama, just 9 days after Cornell. This was a GREAT year for The Dead! I highly recommend tuning in to that Tuscaloosa show, if you haven't already. One of the best, most unique "Jack A Roe" I have ever heard, and a case in point! Heard Jack a zillion times, but never quite like that! You can find that show and many, many, more on archive.org It's so well worth the time! (I'm listening now, matter of fact) It's 26 songs of fire, and has emerged as one of the Deadhead's sleeper shows from 77. I'm so happy to see you do something like this... your joy and fascination of this music is indeed infectious. I too, didn't 'get' the Dead until I was 22. Saw Jerry in the 1984 and my idea of music just changed. Just like that. It happens to some people... we become the little rabbit lost in the woods... thank goodness for that freedom.
So much fun to see your face melt imagery so similarly expressed! I’m relieved somehow, encouraged or just feeling that “kinship “ of folks experiencing this music. It’s an adventure, sometimes “heroic” sometimes wild sometimes strict sometimes this sometimes that. They were the only ones!

I’ve been waiting for months hoping you would react to this song after you first listened to Scarlet Begonias off this live album! I haven’t watched the reaction yet, but I’m already really excited to see your reaction and what you have to say about it. It’s a very powerful track, and this performance/song specifically, made me fall in love with The Grateful Dead.
Love the rabbit analogy. An analogy I use to describe certain guitar solos is a hike up a mountain. At the beginning, you know they will get to the top, but you don’t know how. Sometimes you see the path they should take. Sometimes it’s straightforward. Other times they deviate from the path to catch some other views. Hendrix for instance seemed to scramble over every rock he could before getting to the top. Here, it feels like Jerry is meandering off the beaten path for those sweet vistas others might pass by. Thanks for everything you do, Michael.
My first Dead show was the following night in Buffalo NY, it was three weeks before I joined the US Navy and low and behold got stationed in San Francisco.
Another great one! I enjoy watching you go through the process of "getting" the Dead because it reminds me of great times many years ago when I went through the same process. Your joy of discovery has also reinvigorated my interest and has me digging deeper in my collection to rediscover endless gems. You mentioned "the dead found [you]" - I'm not sure if you know this, but a favorite DeadHead saying is "You can't find the Dead. The Dead will find you." Ask 10 DeadHeads how they became fans and 7 will have a story that fits this mantra. Likewise, you can't force someone to get it. I tthink most peeople (myself included) didn't like the band the first time the heard the Dead, then some time down the road, it clicks. I don't know what it is, but The Dead are truly unique and they have an almost spiritual or inspiring influence on their listeners - at many levels, so it affects everyone from virtuosos and professionals to people with no musical training or interets who just want to dance along. Thank you for what you are doing. I can''t read music anymore or play an instrument. But i've always loved music (spent years Dj'ing and messing with modular synths) and have been a DeadHead for almost 30 years. I enjoy your show because you are teaching me a new angle to appreciate the band (and others - I watch as many as I can. but priority goes to Dead videos!).) It's been fun watching your recent success after years of hard work and I hope it continues for many years....also 'cuz I want more vids!!!!

You must go back in time now for real perspective on the Dead. You can’t know them without knowing their original psychedelic electric blues sound that peaked in ‘69 and is captured perfectly on Live Dead. Do St Stephen>the Eleven. A masterpiece and Phil will blow you away (again)

There’s a podcast interview of Mayer talking about this very thing about Jerry. He said something along the lines of “Jerry was working in MOLECULES” I get this now. The solo of TLEO is a great example of that.

IMO 73 and 74 are completely amazing for Keith. He's really hit his stride with the band and gotten comfortable, and their heavy Jazz influence in that time really allowed him to shine.

Michael, Happy One Year Dead, my friend!! So proud you found your way onto The Bus! It's obvious you "get it!" EVER FURTHER!! Your giant, rumbling, airplane analogy is spot on, and your joy at the nuances make it obvious that you will be Forever Dead! Jerry not only liked to walk out onto the ledge, but he liked to JUMP, having faith in the landing! I think he took it as a personal challenge, and even a game. You could tell by the looks and the nods sometimes. "Whew, made it back boys!" He loved to color outside the lines, and that's the magic!! That's why you can listen to these songs hundreds of times and never tire of them!! It's those broken bones and gut punches that's missing in so much of today's music. It's HONEST! And the fact that you are always on Bobby and Phil, well, what a supporting cast is all I can say......
I was fortunate enough to catch them on 5/17/77, in Tuscaloosa Alabama, just 9 days after Cornell. This was a GREAT year for The Dead! I highly recommend tuning in to that Tuscaloosa show, if you haven't already. One of the best, most unique "Jack A Roe" I have ever heard, and a case in point! Heard Jack a zillion times, but never quite like that! You can find that show and many, many, more on archive.org It's so well worth the time! (I'm listening now, matter of fact) It's 26 songs of fire, and has emerged as one of the Deadhead's sleeper shows from 77. We're getting near the end of Keith and Donna Jean's tenure, and they have really settled in. Probably their best year, for me. Here's that "Jack A Roe" from Tuscaloosa. His phrasing and note choices are not at all what one thinks of as guitar-centric....the world is full of players with the same vocabulary and musical frame of reference but Jerome is a true original.

I'm so happy to see you do something like this... your joy and fascination of this music is indeed infectious. I too, didn't 'get' the Dead until I was 22. Saw Jerry in the 1984 and my idea of music just changed. Just like that. It happens to some people... we become the little rabbit lost in the woods... thank goodness for that freedom.
I was there that night in Barton Hall.... what a show! The sound was crystal clear, just perfect.
So much fun to see your face melt imagery so similarly expressed! I’m relieved somehow, encouraged or just feeling that “kinship “ of folks experiencing this music. It’s an adventure, sometimes “heroic” sometimes wild sometimes strict sometimes this sometimes that. They were the only ones!

I’ve been waiting for months hoping you would react to this song after you first listened to Scarlet Begonias off this live album! I haven’t watched the reaction yet, but I’m already really excited to see your reaction and what you have to say about it. It’s a very powerful track, and this performance/song specifically, made me fall in love with The Grateful Dead.
I really appreciate the work you put in to picking up on Jerry's patterns. He's the best guitarist who ever lived (imho).
Love the rabbit analogy. An analogy I use to describe certain guitar solos is a hike up a mountain. At the beginning, you know they will get to the top, but you don’t know how. Sometimes you see the path they should take. Sometimes it’s straightforward. Other times they deviate from the path to catch some other views. Hendrix for instance seemed to scramble over every rock he could before getting to the top. Here, it feels like Jerry is meandering off the beaten path for those sweet vistas others might pass by.

My first Dead show was the following night in Buffalo NY, it was three weeks before I joined the US Navy and low and behold got stationed in San Francisco.
Another great one! I enjoy watching you go through the process of "getting" the Dead because it reminds me of great times many years ago when I went through the same process. Your joy of discovery has also reinvigorated my interest and has me digging deeper in my collection to rediscover endless gems. You mentioned "the dead found [you]" - I'm not sure if you know this, but a favorite DeadHead saying is "You can't find the Dead. The Dead will find you." Ask 10 DeadHeads how they became fans and 7 will have a story that fits this mantra. Likewise, you can't force someone to get it. I tthink most peeople (myself included) didn't like the band the first time the heard the Dead, then some time down the road, it clicks. I don't know what it is, but The Dead are truly unique and they have an almost spiritual or inspiring influence on their listeners - at many levels, so it affects everyone from virtuosos and professionals to people with no musical training or interets who just want to dance along.
Thank you for what you are doing. I can''t read music anymore or play an instrument. But i've always loved music (spent years Dj'ing and messing with modular synths) and have been a DeadHead for almost 30 years. I enjoy your show because you are teaching me a new angle to appreciate the band (and others - I watch as many as I can. but priority goes to Dead videos!).) It's been fun watching your recent success after years of hard work and I hope it continues for many years....also 'cuz I want more vids!!!!

I always come back to that record. I learned to play in '78, in the Bay Area, and I came to the Dead through Old and in the Way. It feels like home.

im a new dead enjoyer but man, jerrys solo brings a fricken tear to my eye man what a legend
(I'm no guitarist. I love these videos). I think this fantastic solo is a close relative of the one on various recordings he did of Allen Toussaint's "I'll Take a Melody" (e.g. the "Reflections" solo album).
Jerry's solos and improvisation are so intimate...has you hanging, waiting...and then just reels you in and grabs a hold of you. AMAZING!!

You must go back in time now for real perspective on the Dead. You can’t know them without knowing their original psychedelic electric blues sound that peaked in ‘69 and is captured perfectly on Live Dead. Do St Stephen>the Eleven. A masterpiece and Phil will blow you away (again)
