Compact estate cars sound like a bad idea right from the outset. If you're going to buy a load lugger, why buy one that can't lug much of a load? Logic issues notwithstanding, Volvo managed to turn the genre on its head with the V50, a car that made you want to make multiple trips to IKEA just because of its neat good looks, smart detailing and reassuringly 'on message' image. With a range of decent engines, a great chassis and competitive pricing, the V50 - along with its S40 saloon sibling - made small Volvos attractive once more. A used example is well worth tracking down.

(sorry for my baaad english) i agree, the 2.0d 136 hp is an excellent engine. i have one v50 with 350000 kms, zero engine problem, and one v70 2.0d 136 hp with 230000 kms, zero problem also. on the v70 136 hp it's ok but maybe little bit limit on this bigger car. but on the v50 it's very powerfull

It's quite the opposite, the majority of engines available for this model are Volvo engines with the exception of the smaller displacement D4 series which were a joint effort of Ford, Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi. In fact, the European Ford Focus was of this platform and used Volvo drivetrains as well.

D4 and D3 were volvo's own 5cylinder engine. It was the 2.0D which was the Ford/psa.

@@TC-V8 and the 1.6d etc was also PSA. PSA being peugeot/citroen Ron, not renault etc. it is Peugeot licenced assembly rights to ford, supplied ready built units to mini etc etc, ford having a long established relationship with them for engines, also its ford drivetrains on the mostly tbh ( i own a 2007 V50 and also a 2007 ford focus, (mk2 which v50 based on) owned the ford from new and the volvo for over 10 yrs now) the focus is a ford europe product, though america didnt get the model the v50 was based on, you guys got stuck with an ugly version of mk1 focus assembled stateside for twice as long and went straight to what is known as the mk2 in US but known as mk3 everywhere else :) your logic largely i feel comes from mostly the 5 cylinders were sold in the USA, only the 5 cylinder (both gas and diesel) engines are volvo engines in truth and around 80% of the 518k v50s ever produced had 4 cylinder (non volvo) engines

    Have owned two T5 (S40, V70), 2.4i (S40) and now V50 T5 AWD manual.
5-cylinder engine is the only option for me.
Once you try T5 there's no turning back.
    Awesome engine, awesome sound!
    Loving these small Volvos
