Honestly, I recently re-watched this episode and it hurt me that they didn't put it into production, or else today it would have been the scary under dog of the hot hatch scene, the ideal second/third car for allot of enthusiasts. Shame really

I'm delighted to tell you all that I'm currently building my very own vision of this mad C30 Ploestar! I never saw this piece of Top Gear before, but it motivates me even more! I took a regular 2002 S60 2.3L T5, lowered it, strengthened the chassis and put a Brembo big brake kit on it. Swaybars are still missing. Also, I'm currently rebuilding a second 2.3L, but all stronger internals, adding a slightly better K24 hybrid turbo, which should bump me up to 420HP. The low-end will be a bit miserable because I'm missing the VVT that the C30's 2.5L block has, but I'm not planning to be in the low RPMs all that often when driving it hard anyways. To complete the overhaul, I've already collected an S60R rear axle and cardan for the AWD swap, lighter flywheel and stronger 6-puck clutch. That leaves me with just getting the LSDs and the gearbox.
@@Olaus_ pretty good! Gathering all the necessary driveline parts to keep it completely OEM took me longer than I wanted. So in the meantime I built a race spec engine for my 2002 V40 which I finished last week. Once that car is put together again, I have my hands (and shed) free to start working on the S60
But know this. The c30, Mazda 3 and Ford focus all use the same sub frames and suspension measurements. Volvo struts bolt to focus and a speed3 engine and trans bolt to a c30....that means you could make a awd , engine/trans of choice....Ford speed 30 svt polestar 3 .🤔

Only modifications on it are J-spec coils (lower and stiffer suspension for those who doesn't know what it does) in the front, sport springs in the back, open air filter and 18" Volvo Ocean Storm rims.
As the owner of a 5 cylinder Volvo turbo, I could not go back to a normal car. I mean,give the V70 some beans and it sounds amazing.And little chavs in their rot boxes get pissed off when a cackling old man smokes their hatchbacks.
there are generic obd2 tuners that reliebly tunes the old 2.4 diesels to ~270 ans the turbo'd ones to ~340 rather mad for just a 2005-2014 stock car with a generic tune
I work for a Volvo dealer in the states and I've been in all sorts of the r cars and I got to drive recently a polestar v60 🤯. I am about to purchase a 06 s40 awd t5 with a 6 spd man-well gearbox . I am a die hard Ford fan but I can not say that the " man's car" is not growing on me. If anyone gets the chance to drive a s60r with the polestar tune and 3.2 ....take it as it will make you giggle like a kid.
I love my Volvo. And knowing that my car was built with safety at the forefront is very reassuring. As a first responder, I know that dying in a car on a simple daily commute is not only horrifically tragic, but horrifically stupid. And Volvo seats are great, too.
Fun fact, this is a great engine for tuning, on par or if not even better that the audi 2.5tfsi, it is said that the volvo-polestar B5244t5 engines can make up to 600 ish horses on stock internals, its reliability comparable or if not even better than the 2JZ and RB series engines... Only problem it has that it doesnt have such a large aftermarket support like the AUDI 2.5tfsi engine...
Awesome. I have a V50 T5 R-Design with M66 manual, and had the Polestar upgrade. 250BHP, 0-60 in 6.5 secs, sounds amazing, ferries my family safely and comfortably but is epic when you uncork it. I adore this car.

Volvo never put it into production but strangely enough they placed all of the necessary provisions to mount an AWD rear subframe, fuel tank and propshaft so you could do it yourself. Using a XC90 haldex module gives it a true 4WD lock and not a "on demand" lock like in the V50/S40 AWD.

It's not like the one showed in this video. This is a 400hp, awd, wide body c30. Only that car exists. One example. You talk about a normal polestar trim, with only a remapped engine over the standard t5. And is fwd.
Biggest mistake ever made by Volvo, this car with 4wd in WRC with that legendary sound could have catapulted the brand to enormous levels of desire. Yaris did this with a 3 cylinder! Volvo complained about its older customers, but when they had the chance to shine in their youth... they didn't.
I love my Volvo's I just wish VOLVO IT'S SELF WOULD TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE GERMANS FOR REAL. The potential is there and they could easily steal a bunch of customers from them 😆. RIP SAAB😭
They can't beat BMW M1 or M2. The Merc GLA45 makes 400HP and has a much better interior than the Volvo's cheap waterfall console. While this car is cool, it's just a Ford Focus RS in disguise.

There is a reason they didn't put this car into production you know, it costs A LOT to make, far more to produce than even the most expensive BMW or Mercs. ALSO, speaking factually the Ford is the one in disguise the engine in the Ford is one Volvo has been using for years in the 850 T5's, thanks to Ford funding Volvo was able to put many of their concept engines into production, Ford is renowned for using parts as a parent organization, look what happened with Aston Martin!
I always like the C30, but this Polestar? Forget the Evo and the Impreza, I'll have this Swede mentalist. Shame that this Polestar version was never turned into a production reality.

The Volvo 5cyl is an absolute joy to drive, litsen to and on top of it all it is also endlessly reliable.

I've just decided that if I could only have one Volvo to own for the rest of my life, this would be it.
