Cross-Port Braking

  • When a hydraulic motor is turned by an external force, it becomes a pump. The flow it generates must be directed somewhere, or else a dangerous situation could occur. This cross-port braking video shows you an effective way to handle this situation. For a similar video about cylinders, see our video about Meter-In vs Meter-Out: • Meter-In vs Meter-Out
We make all the interactive animations ourselves, and they're available online at www.lunchboxsessions.com

Thank you very much for that excellent system explanation. Now I fully understand the operation of the anti-cavitation valves.

The same system used on Cat IT14G hydrostatic drive system.

Someone should adapt this to be used for downhill braking on a gas-powered pickup truck. Diesels have exhaust brakes but they don't work on gasoline powered engines. This could be installed in line with the drive shaft to help slow the truck down when going down steep declines. As an aftermarket item that could be installed on trucks, I believe one could make a small fortune.

It's basically an hydraulic equivalent of inductive voltage spike in electrical circuit and a flyback diode

    Question One More,
I had my contemplative. If these Spring remove, Back and Forward between controllers. I guess Turn on the Move controller and then move racing wheel. :) Question?

Where does oil goes when DCV valve it's center position and check valve also suct the oil from tank so there is no drain of oil, where does all oil goes please clear.

Assist me understanding what I am struggling to comprehend. When the DCV closes and the relief valve start relieving, where does the oil go to if it is just directed back to the opposite side of the pump and not back to tank as the DCV is in the closed centre position? Wouldn't all that flow that passes the relief valve to the opposite side of the pump just result in the same pressure or does the oil relieve to tank via the case drain of the motor? Wouldn't the shaft seal of the motor have possible damage with this transfer of flow from one side of the pump to the other resulting in the same pressure that was suppose to be relieved?

The oil blowing over relief is re-circulated back to the other port of the motor. The recirculated oil would be at a lower pressure as it has passed a relief valve. The shaft seal only sees the pressure in the motor case, so while there will be a small pressure spike there should not be any issue provided a correctly sized case drain is used.

What program are you using in the simulation above?

Have a q? Does the check valve help from the main pump side to prevent cavitation on the pump when you operate the DCV at pressure over 3,000 psi.

Anthony Estrella, the check valve does indeed help prevent cavitation. In this circuit, the motor becomes a pump, driven by the flywheel mass, when the directional control valve returns to neutral (center position).
