    Despite the terrible tragedy that afflicted their lives, Jeanne's grandparents are to be commended for standing by their daughter and helping to raise the child, and also Jeanne's mother, who chose to keep the child in an era that condemned unmarried mothers. Also, I feel sorry for Annette's older brother, who was duped into leaving his sister with a stranger. He must have been burdened with the guilt for the rest of his life.

    This case touched me especially, as I was born in Belgium and worked in Brussels when I got my first job as a 20-year-old. I never felt quite safe in the area where my workplace was situated. I was often approached by strangers with less than good intentions. These beautiful little girls, so full of life and promise, fared so much worse. May they and their loved ones rest in peace. When I hear people of a certain age (many of them in my demographic) complain that kids these days are too soft, too spoiled and sheltered, and not independent or self-sufficient enough, I think about how fortunate I was as a child to have survived - unconscious of some of the incredibly stupidly dangerous situations in which I, or I and my friends, found myself. I mean, you would not believe the near-misses that only became evident years later upon reflection with the experience of an adult. And the strange thing I often hear in near-miss stories all the time was true in every one of my own experiences: we did not tell the adults in our lives what happened, because we were afraid of not being believed, or (in my case) of being punished for bringing unwelcome news into the household. That the children in this second story who were able to tell what they saw, and to describe the man involved, seemed to have been dismissed just because they were deemed unreliable for being children is sad.

    I wonder if the police ever got a description of the man the children saw in the first and second murders. It sounds like the local police didn't have experience with these sorts of murders.

    • @Zaft_K
      @Zaft_K 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      I also wonder about the door where the police dog stopped between the location of the "package" and the grandparents' home. BC reports no information on that, so I can only assumed no information was reported. But if the dog could accurately locate the location of Jeanne's home and where her body was found, that intermediate location should have been investigated!

    • @TheKulu42
      @TheKulu42 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@Zaft_K I agree. I don't understand why they didn't conduct a search at that location. This investigation sounds really haphazard to me. I'm also curious about the grandfather's whereabouts and appearance, and whether anybody else such as other relatives or boarders lived in the house.

    • @Zaft_K
      @Zaft_K 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@TheKulu42 there are a lot of unanswered questions. The grandfather may have had a strong alibi, if he was at the other job, but we don't know. Also, did Jeanne get to her mother's house before she disappeared, or no? That is an important question to establish the timeline. Finally, Jeanne left the grandparents' house around 6:30, then her dismembered corpse is found around midnight? That means a LOT of actions had to happen in a very short time. If the children saw Jeanne with this unknown man around 7:30, ... why? Why wasn't she at her mother's home, which was only minutes away from the grandfather's home??? BTW, I do *not* think the grandfather had anything to do with her murder. It just sounds like the police did not do even the most basic elements of an investigation.

    • @TheKulu42
      @TheKulu42 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@Zaft_K Yes, the grandfather likely wasn't involved, but a good investigation is largely a process of elimination. A description of him and whether it matched that given by the children would be helpful. And I wonder if the family was questioned about friends and acquaintances Jeanne would know. A description of the man the children saw would be helped here, too.

  • @NelsonStJames
    @NelsonStJames 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +51

    When you hear these stories of tragedy befalling children in the past, you really understand how people are really looking at the past with nostalgia googles when they talk about some mythical time when children were completely safe playing unattended, or able to go about unmolested. While it was less likely that someone would harm a child in the past, children have always been targets of predators.

    • @Zaft_K

      I don't even think it was less likely. Just less likely to be reported or taken seriously.

    • @rachelann9362
      @rachelann9362 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      I wouldn’t say less often. It was more hidden and unheard. Like today, there was a huge disparity in reporting to newspapers. I’m actually surprised the first girl got any coverage given her mother’s social and economic status. Closing rates were also FAR lower, and a higher rate of wrongly convicted, so there was more repeat offenders. Children weren’t taken seriously, if the offender was in the family it would’ve been more likely to become a family secret.
      Not to say all this stuff doesn’t happen today. But one has to remember just how much we learn of today, and how FAR away we hear these stories. Most people only would’ve heard what happened in their immediate area.

    Good morning,
    Hearing stories of children being murdered, just really bothers me so much even though this was so long ago. Plus the fact there was no justice for either little girl. Only a monster would do something like this, and I was hoping by the end of the story someone would have been caught. Whoever did this may not have faced justice here, but hopefully he faced justice in the afterlife. I loved how everyone came together to build monuments for these two beautiful children that were taken it such a young age. Have a wonderful week.

    Although they will now be long, long gone I feel so bad for Jeanne's grandfather and Annette's older brother. Both must have lived the rest of their lives wracked with guilt for what turned out to be the fateful decisions they made.
    In times past of course it was very common for children of six and seven to be out alone - my own mother was catching a public bus across town to and from school by herself from the age of five in the 1940s rural UK - and no one batted an eyelid. From about six or seven I used to go to the shop at the other end of my Nana's village to buy her cigarettes for her (1970s).

    I hate that only one person gets blamed when there is a pregnancy. It takes two. There's no cause to deny the child you had a part in making. It can have lasting effects to think a parent doesn't want you.

    These two "heartbreaking" cases of two precious little girls that were heinously murdered is beyond words to comprehend. I'm extremely disappointed that the Belgium police officials weren't able to solve these murders, because I personally don't like to believe that some despicable person or persons got away with murder, period! Great investigation and presentation, as always.

    I know kids way back in the day were treated like mini-adults, worked, ran errands, all kinds of things. But the careless way they were sent off with adult strangers or on their own is horrifying.

    @Brief Case just sad this one is. After all this time no closer to the killer/ killers of these terrible crimes. Those poor sweethearts.
    Thank You for another one my friend💙 My heart goes out to the families of these stories even if the years have passed by, the feeling and wonder will always be . And to you Brief Case for being able to study, fall into these crimes, focus and tell these sometimes just plain sad and no need for any of these actions to have taken place to begin with. Love to you from over across the waters on the Bluenose Coast 💙🤍

    The method of abducting Annette was identical to another child that you covered but ended quite differently. It was the Vampire of somewhere I don't remember. The guy committed crimes indiscriminately. He had a big sister go buy him cigarettes while he stayed with the little sister, strangled the little one in the bushes then, when the older sister returned, he repeated the crime with her 😢
