The poison that maomao drank was intended for lishu. Lishu's allergic to the fish, so they made her a jellyfish one instead, then the food taster switched her dish to harass her , hence the smirking. (I think she wasn't really aware of how severe her allergy was, she thought she was just a pinky eater who didnt like fish)
Just so you know, the emperor mother gave birth to the current emperor when she was around 10/11year old. He is the same emperor who made Lishu his concubine at 9 years old, but died before he could "consumate" the relationship. So, whatever your opinion of the last/late emperor is, it is probably right.

Maomao's freckles are like Clark Kent's glasses, this will be a theme throughout the series. In the LNs it mentions that the other food tasters kept an eye on Maomao and didn't taste anything till after Maomao had tasted the dish.
I think in the authors mind's eye it's probably a bit more than a few dots of clay for freckles. The intention is that Mao-mao is drastically changing her naturally beautiful appearance to avoid unwanted attention. The animation only shows a very small change.
@@ms6534since it is not a spoiler, I can confirm in the LN that Maomao actually tattooed a few of the freckles. It makes more sense to have them makeup in the Anime for the change in her appearance.

Upon his death, his consort became a widow and was adopted as a consort for current Emperor, but he has no sexual interest in a child consort. The current Emperor had a consort Ah-Duo who was at a comparable age, circa 30+yrs old. Previous Emperor and his mother were strange creatures. A lot of back story to be revealed.
They have to put that description on the episodes because other manga and anime where cancelled before while depicting certain cultures or people from other countries, as it was the case with Hikaru no Go that got cancelled for depicting a Korean Go player(not in a bad way) and he took offence to it due to the atrocities Japan committed during their histories and wars and the manga and anime got cancelled before the story was concluded(I'm still sad to this day... one of the best anime/manga I ever watched/read) so they improvised an ending on the anime and even tho the manga was ahead in chapters it ended in a similar note but further down the story. 😢

You will notice that a servant brings a single dish out to each food taster to taste a portion of it, then presumably carries it to the concubine (this is not actually shown but can readily be implied). The food taster has no opportunity to switch dishes, as she is on stage at all times during the meal. It was a mistake made by the servant in picking up the dish from the food preparation area. This is why, when Maomao realises that Lishu is allergic to fish (and therefore realises the she accidently got the wrong dish for the entree), she realised that the server continued to make the same mistake and that the next dish (which was poisoned, as the minister collapsing after drinking it shows), was actually intended for LIshu. However the food taster did realise that the dish was wrong (hence the smirk when she tasted it), but thought that it was a simple dislike of fish, and not something that was actually dangerous to Lishu. She thought that at the party, in front of the Emperor, Lishu would then be forced to eat something she simply disliked. Hence she was incredibly scared when Maomao revealed to her how dangerous it actually was. She would certainly have been painfully executed if Lishu had died (and knowing Chinese history, probably the rest of her family would have be executed as well). Not to mention the other handmaidens and a lot of other servants in the rear palace (including most of the kitchen staff as well as the servant that made the mistake in the first place). .Historically (and has been implied in the show previously), a serf's life is worth nothing. [And this is one of the reasons for the disclaimer at the front of each episode, because it does a good job of portraying the historical Chinese court (and modern Chinese are particularly sensitive about the Japanese due to WW2), and quite ready to take offence at any perceived criticism.] As to why the food taster would want to embarrass her mistress, well that could be for a number of reasons. The earlier encounter that hinted strongly at Lishu being a brat might explain it. Or maybe something else is wrong. In any case, it is not the usual behaviour expected for a handmaiden.

The imperial-concubine relationships get a bit further explained, so its tough to not spoil things. I'm pretty sure the only takeaways are... Yeah, Lishu being a concubine at 9 is gross. And still is gross at 14. The ladies in waiting are bullying Lishu for some reason. The food that was poisoned was targeted at Lishu, but the lady in waiting (possibly all of them) switched the tray to force Lishu to eat mackerel. She didn't know about allergic reactions. Mao-mao being the giga-stacy that she is, don't F with that energy, so she scared the shit out if her. This is one of the best written episodes. So many hints and clues in the character design. For instance take this fact and rewatch tge episode: Certain patterns/symbols/colors are often reserved under penalty of death for members of the imperial family.

Of all the characters, Lady Lishu is my favorite, aside from MaoMao. She's just so pure and innocent and sweet.
