To expand a little on the kidnapping scam, the system works because aside from the outside kidnappers there are guards and clerks also involved in the scam. Maomao knew that, so she understood that if she screamed or made a fuss about being kidnapped the colluded guards would have taken her and killed her, which is why she kept quiet and meekly accepted her fate.
@19:30 as far as i understand it: Kidnapping and selling a person as a slave are illegal, BUT a family with too many mouths to feed can send one (or more) of their children as a worker into the palace. So that way they have one mouth less to feed (as that is now on the palace) and the child and the family are paid so it supports the family further. There seems to be a time limit though. So the "contract" only lasts for a certain amount of time. So some shady individuals try to make a profit from that by kidnapping children and pretend it is their own and do a contract with the palace. I think Maomao already knew about all of that so she wasn't too concerned in the first episode because she knew what might happen and that it is only for two years.
This show is off too a entertaining start. I can’t wait to see how the story develops. Maomao and Jinshi seem very interesting characters, I seriously look forward to seeing more of them and their dynamic. Also a little fun fact, Jinshi’s dub VA is Kaiji Tang who also voices Satoru Gojo. Maomao’s dub VA is Emi Lo, who voices Akane Sawatari from Chainsaw Man, the girl who has Snake Devil contract.
My wife is Chinese and always referred to my cat as "Maomao" and now it has stuck lol. So when this show came around I was instantly in love with our MC. One of the few anime that I decided to buy the written form.

Maomao in opening is from Jinshi's POV, that's why she is so hot there and irl she is just little gremlin.
If you had never had chocolate before there would be a rush of endorphins plus the placebo effect, they were told Maomao was making aphrodisiacs so the suggestion was planted. Jinshi took one of the brownies while he distracted her probably to satisfy his curiosity.
The slave system is the same that existed all over the world with a few differences according to the location and country.
Someone could be sold as a slave if he was a prisoner of war, or if he was legally sold. The legally sold person was someone that was sold by their family for financial reasons, meaning the parents selling their children to have less mouths to feed, a common practice in those times, or if you were in debt and you had no feasible way to pay those debts, you could sell yourself as a slave for a certain amount of time to pay off those debts. Again, that was a common practice at the time. We have documented instances of these practices, for example we know that Plato, the famed Greek philosopher, was sold as a slave in 388 BC until he bought his freedom again.
In truth you could say that slavery was another form of work and a way to settle financial differences. It was a legal contract and the person sold had rights and the person buying him had obligations such as offering him a place to stay, food to eat and making sure he didn't die. He was essentially an unpaid worker because his earnings were used to pay off his debts.
Of course there were different kinds of slaves. The legally sold slaves and those that voluntarily sold themselves for financial reasons were protected under contract as stated above. The slaves captured in war were another matter entirely. Those slaves had no real rights and most of them were used as laborers in mines and other, usually extremely dangerous jobs. Only those who were educated and specialized escaped that fate in this category.
i think it was mentioned later on, in the manga, that Jinshi and Mao Mao's age gap aren't that far. But yea, i haven't continue the manga since last year so i can continue in the anime

4:38 Funny you say that, cause Geto's VA, was supposedly voicing Jinshi, but because he was on scandal around the Anime airing time, Jinshi VA's was changed to someone elses.

Fyi not all eunuchs had the entire thing cut. Some just the balls were cut while others had there entirety removed. Somtimes they just crushed the balls which pains me to say.
In this case theyre used as harem servants specifically because of there inability to sire a child which makes a perternity issue impossible.
In other cases eunuchs were considerd lower class servants but there inabilty to have a family made them more trustworthy because they had less motivation to create their own private dynasty.

And would often use their positions to enrich their extended families or powerful benefactors to live a life of luxury as good or sometimes better than the Emperor himself.

I think Maomao age are 15-16 yrs old...as for Gyokuyou,she is 19...that's what I know so far......

This part is where I was disappointed, having heard of how great it supposedly is beforehand. An emperor consort with the dumbest of grins and not a care in the world. Jinshi ordering aphrodisiacs with seemingly no point to it (as if it even works like that). I felt myself caring less and less.. until House started later on. They seem to have realised that as well when adapting it as an anime because the bit with the poisoned soldiers at the camp was added in.

But in case you didn't know, House (the main protagonist of the TV series with the same name) is what Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries is often compared to, which is why I was looking forward to the detective part but the first few chapters are so nonchalant that you stop believing this could really have happened. Just a bunch of typical anime tropes thrown together.
@@Lightkie You're the one not making any sense, not the anime. The Apothecary Diaries is about MaoMao and her life as an apothecary both inside and outside of the palace. She's not a detective. What does the problem in the first episode being solved have anything to do with nonchalance? Her knowledge about poisons, and her experience living among people in the brothels helped her deduce the root of the problem logically and easily. Because she's seen the problem before. No one else in the rear palace knew of this problem prior to the incident, because they don't have her background. Why would the first few chapters make you stop believing this could really have happened? It's imperial China, not modern society, which the House TV series is set in. There's literally no basis of comparison here. Calling the anime just a bunch of typical anime tropes thrown together when it's a non-typical anime genre to begin with is just plain inaccurate.

Why do you bring up the previous episode at all? The previous episode was fine. I was not talking about that, can't you at least respond to what I actually wrote? The suspension of disbelieve is just too big in this episode.
"Not a care in the world?" At the front of the episode it gives exposition that she has few servants cause of trust issues. Later to revealed that there have been assassination attempts that seriously injured her previous food tester.
