From their point of view, Lakan was a scoundrel who ruined a high-ranking courtesan, and almost ruined the House itself, and is hanging around to harass them. They can't completely get rid of him because he's too high up, so they tolerate him. The old madam keeping Fengxian hidden is her way of protecting her from the man who "ruined" her. Also, the old madam doesn't set the courtesans' value, the market does. She doesn't own the Verdigris House, she's just the proprietor. It's shitty, of course, but that's the society they live in. Meimei said Fengxian "should have been honest from the start" because she realized that Fengxian had deliberately gotten herself pregnant so that Lakan would be able to buy her out. And since Meimei was the only one interacting with Lakan in the Verdigris House, she also realized that Lakan loved Fengxian, contrary to what everyone else thought. No one else (other than Maomao, who also figured it out) knows or realizes that Lakan and Fengxian loved each other. She realizes that had Fengxian been honest from the start about how she felt about Lakan rather than trying to entrap him by getting pregnant, then the whole tragedy could have been averted. Meimei was also crying because she had fallen in love with Lakan (look back on the statements she'd made about Lakan and her interactions with him), and while she was hoping that he would buy her out, she realizes that Lakan loved Fengxian and not her. You've probably realized by now that Maomao and her family are pretty neurodivergent. So if you're expecting the typical female romantic lead character type of reactions from her, you'll be disappointed. But that's what makes her so great. Not often you see what's basically a typical male romantic lead character try to pursue an aro-ace female romantic lead character. It makes for a fresh and interesting dynamic.
This arc is a huge highlight and also a lowlight. Ultimately it’s a great story with complicated interactions but the whole thing relies on miscommunication like a lame high school drama or romance story. I still really like this arc, just wish it didn’t rely on a long drawn out multi-year miscommunication.

Sure, there was the original one with the pregnancy, but after that, it's not about people not talking, it's about logical decisions. Maomao simply doesn't want him as a father, the old lady doesn't need his money so she can afford to keep Feingxian and treat her herself (she's probably her daughter) and on and on...
I took that comment to mean Fengxian refused to meet him and not wanting him to know she was alive, and now is accepting him only after her mind has slipped
The Apothecary Diaries is based off of a light novel series written by Natsu Hyuuga. The manga adaptation of the light novel is drawn by Nekokurage. So, the tax evasion will likely not impact any future seasons. By the way, the entire first season was adapted from 2 novels. There are currently 15 novels in print, only 11 with an english translation. If they anime adaptation continues to be this excellent (hardly anything was changed from the novels), we are looking at many more seasons to come!

If you watch the previous episode closely, you'll realise that the old lady told Lakan that Fenxian was 'gone', when he tried to find her. So he assumed she was lost or dead. It never occurred to him that she had been secreted away in the Verdigris House.
They showed you that Lakan was told that Fengxian was "gone". He also knew that Maomao was still at the Verdigris House. As far as Fengxian goes, the other courtesans knew Fenxian had cursed him. I mean, she chopped off her finger so it wasn't a secret. There's no telling what Fenxian might have said to them but it was probably a lot of hateful words. It's why the old lady kept him away from her, and why Meimei cried seeing how happy she was when she saw Lakan. They thought she hated him.
There is a personal reason the old madam kept Fengxian hidden, but I think it's still a spoiler for anime-only viewers, haha... Also re: Maomao's finger, the anime did it very subtly (Also harder to tell due to the art style), but Maomao has stared at her somewhat deformed pinky and reminisced upon it in previous scenes!
What maybe you missed is that Mei Mei is actually completely in love with Lakan, I mean he's smart, funny, kind... and she knows he was innocent of what happened with the mother. Maomao knows this and she would have been fine it Lakan actually bought her. The old lady is probably just protecting her supposed daughter... she was also a great courtesan when she was young.
Such an amazing story!!!!!!!! And what a beautiful way to end the season too. Lakan and Fengxian’s reunion made me so emotional and so did Mao Mao’s dance sending off her mom 🥹 it’s also tragic that Mao Mao just doesn’t have that parental attachment for either of her bio parents (it’s understandable why) because it would’ve been so cute to see them together as a family even once, but alas… it is bittersweet. I bought all the manga and light novels after this season because I couldn’t wait lmao can’t wait for season 2!
And don't forget that Lakan was hating himself over those last seventeen years, Thinking he had unwittingly caused her death. And because of his disability he felt he had no friends. After all, he couldn't recognise anyone or even read their expressions. He only recognises people from their context/environment (probably the real reason why Maomao thinks he is lazy and sends others to do the investigation). And he already had no family. And the Madame hated him because she believes he intentionally ruined Fengxian. But probably not just for the reason you think.
I love how the only reasons every viewer hates Lakan (myself too, I'm not pretending otherwise) is because of the tone of the music whenever we got to see him and a few reactions of the people around him DESPITE THE FACT that Maomao's adoptive father, and by extension the entire show, is constantly trying to preach not to jump to conclusions based on circumstantial or incomplete facts. Like Lakan is probably not the best person anyway but he's clearly nowhere near the bad guy everyone assumes he is.
Lakan recognizing Maomao's face, realizing she likes the same puzzles she does but he doesn't do and sets her up is kind of a funny dad thing. He's almost a proud dad in a weird way lol. I always liked his char and hated the negative connotations because they were SUPER easily dissuaded if you thought logically. But the romance with Fengxian and he sees her face, so great. Only for us to see a casket.. Hence his leave. Don't think the girls talked about why he took 7 days and 7 nights and left? Did they not understand or see?
So the thing with the old lady is not hard to understand if we put everything together: Fengixian lost her status to zero (the people define the status of the courtersan, if shes getting more attention or less, depends on the people, the granny just ajusts the prices), when people found out fengxian was pregnant and wouldnt be able to get costumers, she lost everything, but after birth, she would still have to work because the courtesans have to pay for they're being in the brothel (clothes, food), but since Fengxian lost her status and in that time the brothel wasnt as luxury as now, they would have her to take any costumer (maomao said that now they are more strict with the mans who can have the courtersans so they wont get ill) and thats when Fengxian got syphillis. Fengxian and the people on the brothel thought Lakan had abandoned her for three years, when he came back, granny said "she's gone" because she thought Lakan would only hurt her more to that point, its not diferent from what happend in previous episodes when that hole brothel was trying to kill the shitty man who caused the death of one of their coutersans and made many other suffer. The brothel is like a big familly in a way (at least some people in them) and when someone do something really bad to one of them, specially in cases like this two that also make them loose money, this person its just fucked, see how even the other people in grannys's brothel doesnt like Lakan, and granny also wanted to shield Maomao from that man who was seeing as evil to them. Also there is a teory that granny is actually Fengcian's mother and thats why she was so protective and let her stay at the brothel even after beeing so sick and even having Luomen to make medicines that helped her with the pain
What a lovely season finale. The scene with Maomao dancing was so beautifully animated. It was a joy watching this series with you ladies, and I can't wait to do it again for S2.

About the Madam of the Verdigris House, You see... In the novel, There are faint hints that kinda insinuate that maybe... the Madam of the House might turn out be Fengxian's (Maomao's Mom) Mother... Before she becoming the Madam of the House, She also used to be a courtesan herself. As you saw Fengxian telling Lakan in the last episode, A Courtesan can never be a mother in the pleasure district. Meaning... for their business, The Madam and Fengxian can never let it be known that they were parent and a child. Still... There is a bond between them. Cause why else would the Madam look after Fengxian when she caught a syphilis and no longer take any guest? Not to mention that instead of throwing out Maomao whose birth almost cause the House to went out of business, The Madam kept her around up until she got adopted by Loumen. Why? Well, Maybe it because Maomao is her granddaughter. Again... Because their circumstance in the pleasure district, That connection of their can not be known... Hence their strange relationship. Just so you know, This is still just a theory that the fans piecing together from bits and pieces of details here and there through out the novel. There is still no confirmation about the theory being proven yet... But from the look of it, The possibility of it being true is very likely.

It said Luomen didn't object to Lakan getting beaten up which really annoys me. Maomao having an aversion against a guy she didn't know that was creepy looking and bleeding from his head.. fine, she was just a child - but Luomen who knows Lakan wasn't to blame? No.

Yeah not watching episodes back-to-back kinda misses important points. I use that as justification for my unhealthy binging.

This may be consider to be a spoiler by some but I don’t agree. My wife who doesn’t care much about mangas or anime but she is a fan of soaps (specially Spanish, Korean and Turkish soaps) thinks she has figured the story behind Momo and everything that happened with her mother. Both me and Maggie (my wife) haven’t read the Manga or the Novels. May be spoiler if this is what happens to have taken place. Again this is just is my wife’s theory that Momo’s mother is the old lady’s daughter as the only reason she didn’t kicked her out of the house after she got pregnant or gave birth. That makes momo her granddaughter. That would also make sense with why Momo is keep around the house and and her adopted father who probably was the birth doctor of Momo. We think that old lady force the uncle to raise Momo as like “you need to do that” All of this is what my wife thinks it happen. I think she may be right as it fits so well. It’s just theory so it may or may not be true, but it’s is an obvious deduction once I think about it.
About the Madam of the Verdigris House, You see... In the novel, There are faint hints that kinda insinuate that maybe... the Madam of the House might turn out be Fengxian's (Maomao's Mom) Mother... Before she becoming the Madam of the House, She also used to be a courtesan herself. As you saw Fengxian telling Lakan in the last episode, A Courtesan can never be a mother in the pleasure district. Meaning... for their business, The Madam and Fengxian can never let it be known that they were parent and a child. Still... There is a bond between them. Cause why else would the Madam look after Fengxian when she caught a syphilis and no longer take any guest? Not to mention that instead of throwing out Maomao whose birth almost cause the House to went out of business, The Madam kept her around up until she got adopted by Loumen. Why? Well, Maybe it because Maomao is her granddaughter. Again... Because their circumstance in the pleasure district, That connection of their can not be known... Hence their strange relationship.
Just so you know, This is still just a theory that the fans piecing together from bits and pieces of details here and there through out the novel. There is still no confirmation about the theory being proven yet... But from the look of it, The possibility of it being true is very likely.

20:40 You know the manga is based on light novels, right? It only covers a fifth of the published story so far. There is also another manga adaptation that started in the same year by a different mangaka that is further along. It's the same story, I have no clue what the reasoning is behind that.
One important thing left out of the anime was Lakan finding Maomao walking besides Luomen next to the brothel after getting beaten bloody again by the old madam (he kept coming back) and realising it must be his daughter. It said Luomen didn't object to Lakan getting beaten up which really annoys me. Maomao having an aversion against a guy she didn't know that was creepy looking and bleeding from his head.. fine, she was just a child - but Luomen who knows Lakan wasn't to blame? No.
