Yeah, I've read that. I think on the website I bought the tube, it even says right there this is what people are using for the harder to find 7199. Protect the caps from a tube recto ?
Yeah I've since found some other tubes, oddly enough, kicking around in a box of old oddball tubes I had, that had the same pinout and have played with them. Got a couple ECF804 and yeah, a couple 6GH8A
So it would be possible to take two of those and make each one a half of a phase inverter and a power pentode for a tiny ab amp? That would be pretty sick.
What, as a mod to this amp? or are you asking about building another amp out of just these tubes ? I think it's been done yeah. LIke if you want to build a little low watt amp, you dont' even need a pentode. Marshall had a line of 1watt amps that used a 12AU7 as a power tube. I've since tried that and it worked well.
@@DATT Yeah, I've made some small amps. I always thought a mini plexi or trainwreck with actual pentodes and nfb and all that would be neat. I have the Marshall DSL1, but a triode cant distort like a pentode. Love your channel.
@@lastscatteringsurface9950 Hmm, well a DSL circuit might not be designed to put the power section as hard. I do believe I've seen designs that made a simple 1 tube amp using these kinds of tubes. Also, you could maybe try diff tubes other than the 12au7. Like I'm using a soviet surplus 6N6P, and it distorts not. Also the 6CG7 was sweet. Just they require different heater wiring. Depending on the amp, you could just use an adapter.
@@DATT Ah, sorry I meant transconductance, not conductivity. Well yea, you basically only need it when designing a new amp from scratch, so as a repair tech it's rarely relevant.
@@toastedphantom3007 Picking the right tube for the desired effect kind of thing. Probably stuff more important in polished HiFi, or TV sets. Stuff that doesn't matter at all with guitar amps, cause they work using controlled chaos, haha. Makes Sense.
Substitution tube - a substitube
Did I say that ? I might have said that.
@@DATT No, but it's would've been a great joke.
@@AradijePresveti I swear I said something like that. It sounds like something I would of said, hah.
@@DATT You were this close to saying it 🤏Right in the first 20 seconds of the video
@@AradijePresveti Ohhh, got close enough that it's like I remember saying it, hah.
Useful sub for 7199s also. I always add series diodes in the anode leads to protect Capacitors when a tube Rectifier is present.

@@DATT When a tube rectifier shorts out AC is fed to the Filter Capacitors. The Silicon Diodes back up the tube and prevent damage.
@@alanfarmer5730 Hmm, I think I know the trick you're referring to. I have had a tube short in this. Just popped the fuse.
I enjoyed the video. Thanks.
You're welcome !
Sick buddd!
Hell Yeah !
The 6U8A shares the same pinout as the 6BL8, 6GH8 and 6EA8, so at least if the 6U8A becomes unavailable there are options.

mho is - as stupid as this sounds - the opposite of ohm. So not resistance but conductivity. It's expressed in S or Siemens nowadays I think.
Oh wow eh. In all my years I've never been acquainted with that specification.
I guess it just hasn't been needed in practice.
