its not parent company. it was sold by bytedance as separate entity few yrs ago. hence why the us govt allowed us version of tiktok to continue. but now things are being revealed that they are still in REGULAR contact. and coincidentally a chinese guy is running the US tiktok.
The CEO of TikTok carried himself very well during the questioning. Most of the questions by the Congress members reflected their prejudices, biased views and shallow intellectual understanding.
Prejudices? I think they quoted the law. That imposes a Chinese citizen to cooperate with CCP and not say a word about it. It is basically a backdoor for every Chinese employee you have. If I was the CEO of TikTok, I would have reverted the question back to the congreessmen. Clearly the only solution is putting additional checks and controls and monitoring on Chinese personnel, but wouldn't this go against equal rights, equal opportunities, woudln't this help institutionalise prejudice? TikTok isn't applying those checks, so it is trusting its employees, yet the law remains, and concerns also about the privacy policy, remain. It is clearly a conflict, where democracies don't like adding more checks and controls to a select ethnicity, despite they could benefit from those same checks... So democracies don't have yet an answer to the problem, because this backdoor exists, was introduced by communist / autoritarian governments, and Democracies don't really know how to solve it without being anti-democratic. Unfortunately they expected more from the actual CEO of TikTok, but he couldn't deliver. The best he could have done as I said is pose back this contradiction to them. The only solution I possibly see is take the loss and ban the app.

It is the fear of US losing its hegemony No.1 in economy, technology & military that give rise to many unfounded suspicions & imaginary threats.

Why ask a CEO about any of this? If US Intelligence is telling you that TikTok is a threat, and that the CCP is in charge, just do what you need to do. Are you Congress or are you the Better Business Bureaus?
