    I've been riding HD for 35 yrs and in that time have read everything I've been able to find about the history of the motor company and the men and women who built and rode them. I love that you guys can still surprise me with information that I've never heard. Hoping that next year the border is opened back up and I can ride down to check out this amazing collection of motorcycle history in person. ✌🇨🇦

    You and Dale have an awesome collection there in Maggie Valley. Your guys in the shop must be pure nostalgia buffs on these bikes. You'll be long remembered for preserving this wonderful collection that might have gone away had it not been for your perseverance. I salute you on your dedication.

    I find it always amazing- you and your crew at Maggie Valley not only restore these rare treasures, you insist they not only can run, you insist they do run. Awesome! And you truly have the largest collection of bikes Jay Leno doesn't own one or a dozen off! BTW, both of your collections are on my Top Ten Bucket List! Jay does have you in one category though- he has eight Deusenberg cars; but then again, you have virtually every important hill climber ever built- maybe three of four are missing. You will find them!

    Insane collection! I've done a hillclimb on my rigid kz440 and it's a rough ride but atleast I have hydro forks. I couldn't imagine making the run with a springer up front. But now I want one

    My uncle, Alfred Earl Gunter, had a H-D 61" stroker that he rode hill climbing. He won over 100 trophies, he lived in Indianapolis and raced around the area as far as St. Charles, Mo and several in Kentucky. He passed away in 2005 and had gotten rid of his hill climber long before that, it was not a factory built or factory sponsored bike. Hill climbing was a big deal in the late 50s through the 70s around the Midwest.

    Thx for the great video. I learned a lot and knew about Dudley Perkins HD in San Francisco but had no idea he was a factory hillclimber back in the day. When I was a kid I remember reading about Mert Lawill the AMA National Champion being sponsored by him while I was thumbing thru " The Enthusiast " magazine my father would receive monthly. Your presentations are priceless and am glad to support you on the raffle coming up soon.

    Absolutely brilliant video Dale, as always amigo! Hugely informative, well researched and completely fascinating. Can I also say to your production team; thank you so much for dropping the pervasive background music. This set up is absolutely perfect. Please keep the videos like this 😎 👍🏻 🏍. (PS I’m from Scotland and have donated to the museum, so I’m a true, invested fan & supporter of WTT. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇪🇺)

    As a kid I raced moto cross, enduro even did some ice racing. Nothing professional just hobby class. But my favorite cycling was the hill climb. Nothing like it.

    It is Sunoco racing fuel, and the guy sits the fuel can behind the bike, near another bike.. 110 octane, good it isn't alcohol !!

    CANT find any info on why alcohol fuel do you know?

    • @fredericrike5974
      @fredericrike5974 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you run high compression, you need lots of octane to prevent knocking caused by fuel lighting off at the wrong time- methanol, or as it is generically termed, alcohol, is one such answer. Additionally, high compression engines run at considerably higher temperatures- methanol helps reduce cylinder heating and it's bad effects on power making. This is true, especially, for air cooled engines originally designed to run low compression when they are souped up, as it is impractical to increase the number and/or size of the cooling fins. For sources, look into literature on dirt track race cars- many are run exclusively in methanol. Also people, like Holley, make carburetors specifically for methanol and should have lots of info.

      @@fredericrike5974 thank you, this site should speak more to the ''mechanics'' of bikes. instead of how they got the bikes and ''personalities'' i will research your approach .

    • @fredericrike5974
      @fredericrike5974 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spymaine89 I try to be informative, but by all means, do the research, on this or any thing else you have questions on- I might be talking out of my hoo ha or I might have been paid by the methanol lobby. You won't know till you look! Dale often does speak to the mechanics, but he is also running a museum open to the public, most of whom don't really understand even as little as just what four cycle means.

      @@fredericrike5974 THAN HE, should teach, covid has ''taught us , just how ignorant people are. no school ever taught. we would not be in this covid lie, if schools had taught the basics on virus biology and epidemic patterns. not complicated , simple shit. a bike running on alcohol why, you explained part. not complicated just a little different physical reaction. remember Einstein, he failed math, at first, because a stupid teacher did not understand math enough to show the simplicity. Einstein said that, '' if you cant explain simply you dont understand what your taking about.''

    • @fredericrike5974
      @fredericrike5974 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spymaine89 You are probably preaching to the choir- I went to college thinking to be a teacher in the '70s- it was a bad time for new teaching school grads in Louisiana then, so I didn't finish, and I went into the "family trade"- commercial plumbing. But I still got to teach and am very glad I did; to teach well, you have to be able to answer the stupid questions you were maybe too stupid to ask your self. You must master your topic well enough to help others achieve mastery or, as a teacher, you have failed. The individual student may be so lacking in prerequisites there was little chance but you have failed at that point. That is the essence of being a teacher to me. It made me a better plumber too- because I had to master not just the theory but the practice- and to teach well , you need to do both. The Wheels through time museum makes money by providing some entertainment value to it's patrons- when some one in the audience asks a relevant question, Dale has answered it. But most of the time, that question doesn't come- it's more important to them that the guy who flew co pilot for Howard Hughes giant flying plywood plane was a hill climb champion, not what fuel he did it with. Wheels through time is an entertainment medium and that is how it pays the bills- Dale and his son and crew need to take care of that first- pay the bills. There may be millions of dollars worth of machines there, but the upkeep of the building and all those exhibits, the fuel to run them and the lawn mower that cuts the grass have to be paid for. I think he is doing fine- better than I possibly could- how about you?
