That drive up Pikes Peak and then back down is a once in a lifetime experience. It's frightening as hell once you get above the treeline and my mom was in tears before we reached the top. I'll never forget it.
I put the Caddy CTS in 1st and let her scream all the way down. The only time I touched the brakes was when we caught up to a non-driving, brake riding, so n so in a van.
Thanks for posting. My dad drove our family up in 1959, when it was gravel. This looks like a much more enjoyable trip! You don't want to have to hug the edge of nothingness near the top, as we had to do, while a huge gravel-grading machine passes in the other direction and takes up most of the road. Pavement is so awesome. Looks like you had a beautiful day up there. Thanks for posting.
My dad and his friends drove up in the summer of 1942 when he was training at Lowry field in Denver. I was at Peterson AFB from 1990 to 1993 and it was still gravel at that time. Absolutely breathtaking views Colorado Sorings and Kansas to the east and snow caps as far as you can see to the west.
I love how the trees get more and more sparse as the altitude increases ... really enhances the effect of the true nature of the climb! I've done both the road and the cog railway.
@@Michael1966W - I liked the Cog Railway, better for picture taking. When you're driving, it takes it all out of you...unless you want to frighten your passengers to death, then go for the drive, LOL!!!
My boyfriend and I just drove up this mountain last week!! Terrifying as heck (!!!) but I am so glad I did it!!! The most beautiful scenery Ive ever seen.
Loved the view, the video, background music & much more appreciative of the settlers who navigated over it on horseback & covered wagons. Thanks for sharing the beauty!
Mountain roads scare the crap out of me and my husband just casually drives them like it’s no big deal. I lived in Colorado Springs for a year and never made this trip. Thanks for the video even though it made me anxious lol
I drove this road 25 years ago with my now ex husband, father in law and brother in law and my two children in a people carrier. 25 years later, i can't do fast roads anymore. It scares the life out of me. I just am amazed at myself. The video looks far tamer than the actual drive.
That's just the "goin up" part. Coming down isn't for the faint of heart either! One mistake in certain places...well let's just say you'll beat everybody else getting down!😬
I drove this in 1976 with my buddy Jerry in a 1960 Dodge Dart convertible when the upper half was still gravel. One of the coolest roads I've driven. Would love to do it again in my Mustang. Sadly, Jerry passed away earlier this year.
I was in Colorado Springs few years ago and went up Pikes Peak. Halfway up I started feeling the effects of altitude and shortness of breath so I turned around
I was just there last week. Did the drive with my 80 year old mom. Once we got towards the top I had a massive anxiety attack 😂. Somehow I kept going. I found the drive down to be easier because you can actually see the horizon and ground. Drive up towards the top all you see is sky
The City of Colorado Springs was forced to pave it after the Sierra Club sued them in the 1990's, claiming the gravel was washing off and polluting the forest below with gravel. The paving was completed in 2011.
I went to through high school in the Springs and remember the Pikes Peak Hill Climb races every year, and it was gravel. Loved going to Garden of the Gods in the Springs, too, before it was all built up. I still miss Colorado.
The first time I went, I was alone and drove up and down. A decade or so later, I had with me a friend who had never been there. We each wanted to ride the cog railroad, but he also wanted the experience of driving up the mountain. So, we went to the bottom rail station, where we bought one round-trip ticket, and I headed up by train. He drove my truck up the mountain. At the top, I gave him the second half of the train ticket. He rode the train down, while I drove my truck down and picked him up at the rail station. We did it all for half the money in fare and toll and in half the time. Sheer geniuses!
Makes me sad to watch this . My family went all over Colorado for vacation Every year when I was younger. My dad passed away April 2019. So many memories
Did this drive with a buddy in Summer of 1984 in my dad’s ‘82 Cutlass diesel as an adventurous guy fresh out of high school on a road trip to NM. Great memories!
I remember going up Pikes Peak when the road was still dirt and gravel from the middle to the top. Oh by the way I did it on a Yamaha 500 motorcycle !!

I remember having to piss,so Dad stopped and I found a beautiful green quartz near a pine tree, had it for years but it was lost in the move. Funny thing about our vacations together though, every place we went on vacation,Marion,Gail, and Nanny always got a room where the TV was broken, the shower trickled out water, the fan was broken, the room stunk, there was always something wrong wherever they stayed.
I have never driven this road, but I have driven the "Million Dollar Highway" from Durango to Silverton at night. That one scared me worse that any road I have ever been on. I did it again in the daylight and boy was that a much more pleasant experience. This one looks like the type of road that makes you concentrate 100%.
My wife and I drove up in mid-October 2022 as part of our honeymoon. Amazing experience. The visitor center is very nice now that it's completed. You can certainly feel the lower oxygen being up 14,115 feet. I don't think I've ever driven a vehicle in 1st and 2nd gear so much in my life as I did driving back down. Used the brakes about three time. Highest I got was 3rd gear. I was more unnerved by the number of times I let people pass than I was the road itself. Halfway down they check the temperature of your brakes to make sure they're not over heating. I would definitely do it again. Glenwood Canyon on I-70 was spectacular too.
From about 9:12 on each time you pulled over or hit a corner my heart and stomach dropped.Thrilling to watch but it did give me anxiety.Would have loved to see some pictures from the top though.
Drove across the country and ended up at the top of Pikes Peak today. A little more snow. Increadable. Trip of a lifetime if your a gear head or just for the views. Thankful to have been able to do it. Mark that one off the bucket list. To the sun road next after I try and go through bear tooth pass if not snow covered to bad by the time I get up there.
Looks a really safe drive compared to what we have here on the Indian hills. But I think this drive is safer compared to some of the drives around Lake Tahoe in winter
There are some things in life that I know I’ll never be able to do… this is for sure one of them. Once the trees disappeared… I started screaming at my phone just watching this, “they are so high up there’s no more trees!!!!! OMG OMG”! Lmao 🤣
I took the cog railway 🚃 which was spectacular and steep in places. One of the railway employees remarked, if the brakes fail, there are two springs at the bottom of the mountain to save us: Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs. 😆
We went in March ‘23. They closed at mile 9 due to snowy roads, later opened to the top and we came back. It was cloudy and snowing at top, didn’t have a nice view but so glad we made it to the top.
We drove up this road in 1965 and there was this crazy man behind us who kept tailgating our car and we were half way up the mountain. I turned around in the back seat and looked at the guy and he looked weird. I told my dad that the guy was right on our tail. Daddy slowed down and the man passed us only to get in front of us and go real slow. We passed this nut several times back and forth and all four of us were alarmed and terrified because there are no side railings up this very, very dangerous road. To this day I don't know why that man was bugging us like this. It was the most terrifying ride I've ever taken and the altitude made us all a little queasy too. When we got up to the top we couldn't see anything because of the clouds. There were oxygen ports everywhere because of the altitude. I was very glad when we came down off of that mountain.
Thank you! I've been searching in vain for a long time for just such a video, but have only been able to come up with dash cams from Pikes Peak race cars. They're nice and all, but not like this one is. Favorited and sharing this one. Thanks again!
WOW! Talk about a "dizzy" ride with a dash-cam recorder! Great scenery, even the pull-offs and parking areas on the way to the top of Pike's Peak in CO. I was surprised that much of the roadway did not have guide-rails on the side of the road and the drop off would have killed anyone for certain! The views going up were great! Thank you for your video.
Three years ago me and several friends rode our Harleys to the top of the Pikes Peak and we also got to ride across the Royal Gorge bridge. Beautiful state and I will be back. 👍
Hubby and I did pikes peak a week ago, i drove up, he drove down! What amazes me is the bicyclists making it all the way to the top, its hard to breathe because your oxygen level is decreased being at high altitude ,I salute them ! All the hairpin turns with no guardrails can be a bit terrifying, just dont look down while driving , keep eyes on the road at all times ! A bicyclist was disoriented near the top he was zigzagging and then finally got his bearings, was scary to watch , yikes ! Beautiful breathtaking view at the top, glad we did it !
Went there back in ‘87…..i prayed all the way up. My god, those hairpin turns…..being above the clouds was awesome. I remember having to pull over, to let oncoming car go by because it was so narrow. Let’s see how much better it is now
I have to say I'm from California and today we were rerouted through this area and in 43 and almost crapped my pants several times, besides the Colorodians flew past doing 60 mph... Much props for this most dangerous road... I will never do this again...
Chris, nice trip up the peak. Thank you much! Good that you telescoped the time. Would have liked to have seen the view from Pike's Peak once you got to the top looking down to Manitou and Colorado Springs.. Looking at the road in nice but looking off the road on both sides every once in a while would have added to the video immensely.
It's such a great drive. I drove it almost 50 years ago in an MG. Would NEVER do it again even though I have Brembo brakes on my Land Rover. Almost died on the way down. Scared the shit outta me!
Had to go along with my family on this road and mount Evans on our Colorado trip last year, and I can safely say, there’s no way in HELL I am going back up either of these roads. Chicken or not, I’m not risking it. It was a gorgeous view, but damn.
I went up this thing one day and it was a breathtaking view. I made it up even though I'm a person who doesn't like 2 story buildings, I don't know how I did it
Yes this this video seemed like a race car game and the speed around the edge the mountains with no siding was nerve-wrecking! Then the vehicle kept running to the side of the road😬
Great video!! Thanks for driving it and sharing. Tried this once but it was so windy the road was closed above the tree line. Glad we didn't go any further! Much easier to "drive" it watching monitor in my house! LOL!
Thanks for the video. I take 2 weeks off every year to ride my Indian out West in some of the most scenic areas of the country. I will certainly add this route to my agenda!
It is really beautiful and the views are breathtaking😍, but I have to admit that I'm not very brave😣, when we went, my son was driving our SUV and he is very careful but after you pass half of the way and before getting to the summit the road gets so narrow and there's no protection on the sides that I got so scared that I could feel the panic in my stomach, I thought I was going to have a heart attack😰, I don't wish no one to feel how I felt!😥 But now that I look back I can tell it is worth the ride because it's really beautiful!💖
Yes I was a passenger and looking down out the window you have about one foot of room to the edge of road one mistake and you all go down my nephew was driving up you could see in his face he was scared shitless. I was thinking of shit I may have to drive but he pushed through and was happy he did it all by himself so was I . If you make the trip please no fooling around no room for error and driver for sure can't be distracted . Don't want to scare anyone for doing it just be safe and focused o what your doing.
I was there in 1965 with my parents and sibling. Half way up a man kept passing us then getting right in front of us and slowing way down. My dad would pass him and when we did the man looked insane. This happened several times on the dangerous curves with no railings almost to the peak. We were all very alarmed and frightened by this man. It almost felt like he was trying to force us off the edge of one of the cliffs. Once we got up to the top we forgot about it. But it was very scary.
Unfortunately there isn't a sanity test one has to pass to drive a car though there should be. Actually there should be for a lot of things, especially the for the U.S. Presidency. All that aside, I've had weird shit happen to me like that as well though not on that particular route.
Nice...I have ridden up by road, cog rail, and hiked up by trail and hiked back down by trail. Me, my two sons what a day on the trail. The road and rail was on different days.
Congratulations on making it all the way up to the top. That was excellent, amazing, scary and incredible, all at the same time. Now how about down? That should be everything mentioned above. Thanx for posting this.
It is fun, and just as scary, but well worth it for the experience. Absolutely beautiful. But the ranger station is a mandatory stop to check your brake temp.
I've never made this trip, but a friend described it to me, so I wanted to see it. Thanks for sharing. It's a bit scary in places, especially speeded up. I remember making some pretty treacherous drives in Arizona. One of them was an old road that snaked back and forth up the mountain. It was in terrible shape and in many places an entire lane had crumbled away. Like many people, Im not fond of heights, but for some reason mountains dont bother me the way buildings or bridges do.
Best trip ever; my wife and two boys couldn't get out of the car. However my Little Molly & I we're perfect think she was 5; thanks for sharing. Do Big Sur next.
Planning a trip in 2021. Looks nice . Want to add this to our list - We did Beartooth Pass last year from Red Lodge Montana leading into Yellowstone . Now this is an awsome Drive .
Ran the Pikes Peak Marathon . . . from Manitou Springs city center . . . left up Ruxton Avenue . . . past the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, to my left . . . and on (and up) the Barr Trail. I was already acclimated, due ro my residence in Denver . . . however, it became a true test of endurance when passing trendline ! Pikes Peak to - 14,110 feet elevaton. Marathon distance - 14.1 miles, finishing time - 3 hours 12+ minutes . . . perfect weather, firat Saturday in August. Round trip of the same race was the next day.. A true test . . . of will ! ! ! ! !
Thank you for this. We did the drive up and I wanted to experience it again. Don’t watch if you are riding in a car though 😂 it feels real and you will be pumping imaginary breaks.
I drove up Pike's Peak in 1980 in my sports car (TR-6) and back then the road past the break check station (probably about 5 to 50 miles) was NOT even paved. It was dirt and gravel, and wet from snow melt. Had a headache the whole time I was up there from the altitude. Hardest park for me was navigating the road with campers coming and going up and down.
I am totally terrified of heights. There would be noway for me to drive up to the top - with no guardrails, the curves... even as a passenger, I would not make it. It is beautiful though. Video kinda made me a little dizzy as fast as it was going but still it was good.
This was a beautiful video with amazing scenery...I've driven up a lot of dangerous mountain roads with narrow streets and hardly any safety with a sports car.... this was more like a calm race track to unleash a beast 🙂..thanks for the video
Made the ride as a passenger a few weeks ago. Terrified for a substahtial stretch...miles of skinny shoulders with no guardrails and thousand-foot drops. Fortunately, my son is a smart mountain driver. The views are breathtaking, and am so glad to have seen them...but next time I'll take the train and acrually open my eyes
The absence of guardrails is so the snow plows can push the snow off the road when they're clearing it. It takes a special kind of person to drive a snowplow in the mountains!
That drive up Pikes Peak and then back down is a once in a lifetime experience. It's frightening as hell once you get above the treeline and my mom was in tears before we reached the top. I'll never forget it.
Likewise, my friends brakes were fried once we got back down. I was driving..
WinWiz Had it in low gear of course. Just didn’t know what to expect with the grade.

Let’s see how much better it is now
Stupendo viaggio. Meraviglioso il posto. Spero di ritornare e potermi gustare con molta soddisfazione questo panorama maestoso.
Some friends & I did it on a motorcycles 2 yrs ago. Great ride. We were lucky, the weather was clear & perfect.
I have to say I'm from California and today we were rerouted through this area and in 43 and almost crapped my pants several times, besides the Colorodians flew past doing 60 mph... Much props for this most dangerous road... I will never do this again...
Here is another great clip, enjoy: th-cam.com/video/EO_DlWEGWvI/w-d-xo.html
Chris, nice trip up the peak. Thank you much! Good that you telescoped the time. Would have liked to have seen the view from Pike's Peak once you got to the top looking down to Manitou and Colorado Springs.. Looking at the road in nice but looking off the road on both sides every once in a while would have added to the video immensely.
Truly beautiful video.
I went to Pike's Peak in '16 what an experience it was :)
Thank you
This brings back so many good memories
Cool video. Been up there a few times over the years. Rode my bike back down the last time which was a lot of fun.
It's such a great drive. I drove it almost 50 years ago in an MG. Would NEVER do it again even though I have Brembo brakes on my Land Rover. Almost died on the way down. Scared the shit outta me!
You're suppose to drive down in first gear as to save your brakes!
😫😫😂😂😂
@@dutchworks6032 yeah what’s the hurry anyway you are supposed to enjoy the views on the way down.
Richweigel- but would other drivers get pissed if you went slow on those single lane atetches ?
Had to go along with my family on this road and mount Evans on our Colorado trip last year, and I can safely say, there’s no way in HELL I am going back up either of these roads. Chicken or not, I’m not risking it. It was a gorgeous view, but damn.
That’s a pretty scary looking drive, but it is a beautiful view.
I went up this thing one day and it was a breathtaking view. I made it up even though I'm a person who doesn't like 2 story buildings, I don't know how I did it
Why did you drive up there? - Just because, man!
I love this video, looking forward to driving this road in June. Thanks for posting.
Did anyone else have anxiety watching this? Anyone? Just me?
Just you.....go get a massage and a bikini wax....then let’s talk about anxiety😀
When my husband drove it the road wasn't paved on the way to the top! I kept moving to the center of the car so we wouldn't go over the side.
Not me love taking road trips like this I’m from Colorado
Yes this this video seemed like a race car game and the speed around the edge the mountains with no siding was nerve-wrecking! Then the vehicle kept running to the side of the road😬
My leg just got weak 😮😮😮😮
Great video!! Thanks for driving it and sharing. Tried this once but it was so windy the road was closed above the tree line. Glad we didn't go any further! Much easier to "drive" it watching monitor in my house! LOL!
So that actually paved the road the whole way, very nice!
Thanks for the video. I take 2 weeks off every year to ride my Indian out West in some of the most scenic areas of the country. I will certainly add this route to my agenda!
omg! I would love to do this driving, is so exciting!
I'm thinking of doing this in a Morgan 3 Wheeler, the breaks are manual and crap! Not sure if riding the clutch and gearbox would be bad.
Next time you take a swig o' whisky then you ain't scared no more any more.
no imagine some guys going up the hill with >200 km/h
Why the hell would 60 people downvote this? Absolutely mind boggling
Cool video. Took the cog railway to the peak and back years ago. Spectacular views from the summit and on the way up.
Nice...I have ridden up by road, cog rail, and hiked up by trail and hiked back down by trail. Me, my two sons what a day on the trail. The road and rail was on different days.
Was the hike scary or dangerous? I don't think I could make the drive but I'm curious about the hike
Congratulations on making it all the way up to the top. That was excellent, amazing, scary and incredible, all at the same time. Now how about down? That should be everything mentioned above. Thanx for posting this.
writer125 it's fun
It is fun, and just as scary, but well worth it for the experience. Absolutely beautiful. But the ranger station is a mandatory stop to check your brake temp.
Thanks for posting! I came here when I was 17 in 1993 and forgot how long it took to get up there. Cool drive and neat trip!
You can also enjoy hot coffee and doughnuts at the summit, plus the breathtaking views
Is that all? I would have expected there to be a really top class restaurant open at least during the summer months.
The donuts are so yummy and the coffee was superb, for sure !
I made it too 13500 feet then i broke nerves got me had to turn around I was so close
Wow
plumbherhub pussbag hopefully you turned in your man card on the way down!
Best trip ever; my wife and two boys couldn't get out of the car. However my Little Molly & I we're perfect think she was 5; thanks for sharing. Do Big Sur next.
I did this ride last year. Scariest ride of my life.
But the best car ride I've ever had in my life!!
I miss Peaks and the scenery waking up to in the morning. I wanna move back to Colorado Springs before I die.
Why did you leave? And where to?
Planning a trip in 2021. Looks nice . Want to add this to our list - We did Beartooth Pass last year from Red Lodge Montana leading into Yellowstone . Now this is an awsome Drive .
Drove up Pike's Peak in 1975 in the family trickster. Wish the road was that nice then.
i really can't go anywhere right now so this is really mentally healthy to go!! go ! go ! go ! thankyou
Thanks for this. Stirs up memories.
Don’t watch if you are riding in a car though 😂 it feels real and you will be pumping imaginary breaks.
watching this with full screen is better than being on a roller coaster. made me a bit dizzy but it was cool
LOVE ALL THE BEAUTY IN COLORADO
Beautiful! Had a bit of anxiety watching though.. Thanks so much for sharing!
Here is another great clip, enjoy: th-cam.com/video/EO_DlWEGWvI/w-d-xo.html
I drove up Pike's Peak in 1980 in my sports car (TR-6) and back then the road past the break check station (probably about 5 to 50 miles) was NOT even paved. It was dirt and gravel, and wet from snow melt. Had a headache the whole time I was up there from the altitude. Hardest park for me was navigating the road with campers coming and going up and down.

Drove my new Jeep up in '72, took the train up in '92 with kids . Driving up lots more fun!
was their just last week , up top was -14* windshield factor -26 !! crazy cold OMG , driving down was scary as hell !!
Well kids it's been roughly
54yrs since I made that trip
I really remember that last part and looking over the edge and mom was soo scared. Lol
I am totally terrified of heights. There would be noway for me to drive up to the top - with no guardrails, the curves... even as a passenger, I would not make it. It is beautiful though. Video kinda made me a little dizzy as fast as it was going but still it was good.
Wiletta Miller yeah just went up it today, the drops are terrifying lmao. But it’s worth it at the top
Yah I’m kinda in colarado right now and I searched it up!!! I just walked up greeen mountain yesterday
This was a beautiful video with amazing scenery...I've driven up a lot of dangerous mountain roads with narrow streets and hardly any safety with a sports car.... this was more like a calm race track to unleash a beast 🙂..thanks for the video
Thanks for sharing!!! Beautiful mountains!!! I flew over those mountains but never been there! Will drive soon from Dallas to Rocky’s !!!
came from a video of a dad freaking out driving up this hill,,,,had to see for myself lol
Here is another great clip, enjoy: th-cam.com/video/EO_DlWEGWvI/w-d-xo.html
The absence of guardrails is so the snow plows can push the snow off the road when they're clearing it. It takes a special kind of person to drive a snowplow in the mountains!
Breathtaking and threacherous. Perfect location to hone my driving skills. A trip I will definitely take.
My husband and I drove it years ago - never again! We were both skakened !!
