During the filming of the video, unbeknownst to Michaels, the director had inserted footage of James Kimo Maano which was playing on a screen in front of Bret. This was done to try to draw an emotional reaction from Michaels. It worked so well that Michaels lost his composure and had to leave the set for several hours. On the final cut of the video, during the second verse, Michaels can be seen visually holding back tears as he momentarily stops singing.
Heartbreaking everything in this song. Some ppl go through things that others can't comprehend...you NEED something to believe in. But Christmas yeah hard heard time to go through. My Daddy past on 12/22. But I try to think of all the lessons he taught and the goofball things he did and say. Making sure my kids know he is still with us just in a special way.
Definitely a true story. Gives me goosebumbs every time I see this. I want to just reach through the screen and give Bret a huge hug. Brings tears to my eyes as well.
Great song! My dad was a Vietnam Vet and was a highly decorated soldier. He didn’t talk much about the war just bits and pieces growing up. I know when he came back from the war people booed and spit on him. I can’t imagine the things those soldiers saw and gone through fighting in Vietnam. Brutal! Love your channel.
The guy who died in the hotel room was his body guard and friend it happened in 1989 and it was Christmas Eve. He reacted by locking himself in his room and writing this song. The Vietnam vet was his cousin Bob who got injured in the war.
This song and the references to Vietnam...wish I could forget it. I was with USO for 12 years. The wounded soliders I met every week at the SF Presidio during all those years, their pain, courage, beliefs...just still breaks my heart. This song honors them. 😔
Poison is my favorite band!! Kimo really died while on tour back then!! This is my favorite Poison song!! My ”something to believe in” is my wife, kids and my grandson!! My Faith is also up there!! 🙏🏻
Thank you for recognizing what volunteers have been through to make this country what it is today. The most free country in the world. My father served in Vietnam and I served in Desert Storm. If you can’t tell by the pic. Preach on brother and God speed to all our vets. And you are absolutely correct about Brett Michaels. He was not shown that footage of his best friend until that video and he had to fight back the tears.
Everyone should listen to this song to many people don't want to remember this. Let's don't forget this it is part of America. Love to anyone who went through this.
This is my favorite band ever and this song is so amazing. I was fortunate to be front and center at the stage when they p,aged this and I was looking up to this and the video was in the background. That concert sealed everything I love about 80s hair band music. It’s all real even if it was wrong.
Hey Birdman, yes that did happen to him. The Samoan guy was his best friend and security guy and took his own life. Very sad. Happy New Year to you my brother. I need a blue Birdman hat to rock around Maryland. And to your question my God and my family.
Man..that's crazy. So sad. :( Happy New Year to you as well, my brother. That's good. My God and My family are the same for me. Let me know..I only have one blue one yet, and honestly, I don't know when I will have any more hats. Could be a long time.
Ok first cry of the new decade. Damn what a song. God Bless America. As for what I believe in, it was one thing until 8 months ago. People like you in this world. What's been added to that is the birth of my niece in two weeks. Thank you Mr Birdman. Happy 2020
I love that song; it was written about a very dear friend of Bret Michaels who passed away; I can imagine it being very hard for him to sing live... :( I also appreciate him more than just a legendary rocker. He has 2 grown daughters, donates toys to children, and recently, to the people who were affected by Hurricane Dorian... he is an all-around great person who has been through a lot in his life!
Definitely sad. :-(. As for the second paragraph...Wow...that is so cool. Did not know that about them. So glad to learn new stuff about these guys, and that's part of why I started this. Thank you so much for the info. God Bless. Much love to ya.
My best friend died when we were in high school, this song literally came out on MTV like a week later. This song always had a deep meaning in my life.. Great song, great band.
It is now 2022 and watching this video. The preacher was Jimmy & Tammy Baker he was referring to. The person who died on Christmas eve was his bodyguard.
Similarly, I lost my cousin who was my best friend to addiction on Christmas eve. 8 months earlier I lost my brother to addiction 3 days before his 39th birthday. Three years later I lost my aunt, two years ago my father and just five months ago my uncle to other health related issues. There's been years of loss, grief and pain. Without Jesus, without knowing the mercy and grace of God I don't know what I'd be doing or where I'd be. I was fortunate enough to evade addiction. I have my remaining family, my doggie, my guitars, and a few close friends and my health that is struggling but getting better. What I keep close to me is a promise that I learned in the book of Job in the Bible about remaining faithful among the loss and pain. Years of loss, years of pain, years of sadness, loneliness and set backs, but I'm still faithful to our creator and most high God. One day at a time, I pray, thank God for what I have, and ask God for forgiveness for my sins, and ask him to step in and take the reigns. Yes my story is a sad one but I'm living testimony to the importance of faith in God.
That something for me: is my music I can't live without it and gives me hope and makes me smile even in the worst times. We all need something to believe in ❤
This song means a lot to Bret because he took the time to praise our troops and the sacrifices they and their families make to keep us safe before he and the band performed this deep song when I saw them in concert two years ago with my eldest son. The last time I saw Poison prior to that was when I was 18 in 1991 and both concerts were awesome. C.C. is an amazing guitarist and I’d love for you to check out their song Life Goes On because C.C. shreds in that one. You asked what keeps me smiling and keeps me going. That would be my young sons, no question!
So cool. Thank you so much for the info...I really appreciate that. That is definitely something to believe in, my friend. Thank you so much for the support, as always. Much love to ya.
War is hard. You can sympathize. You can think you know what its like. But you can never prepare yourself for what it is truly like. From one Veteran to all others...Thank you for your service!!
Glad u said what u did. Know something about a soldier. They do not do what they choose. They do what their country orders them to do. Period. No one gets a votes. Get ur boots on the ground and go. Dont care about your opinion of what your doing. Just go. My uncle was a noted 5th Marine Scout/Sniper in Vietnam. These boys follow orders. They do what we ask them. We shld support them going and coming.
Yes this really happened to him and the director of the video surprise him with footage of his friend and they kept his reaction in the video that's why it seems like he's off
Loved this one Birdman. I have 2 uncles 1 on my father's side that was a Marine and 1 on my mom's side that was in the Army. They were both in Vietnam. My dad was in the army at the time also but brothers couldn't be there at the same time so my uncle spent 2 tours in Vietnam to keep my dad from going through that. He told me he was already crazy and didn't want my dad to see that. My moms brother lost 3 fingers in Vietnam and when he got off the plane coming home he was spit on and called a "baby killer". I come from a long line a military veterans. My grandpa on my moms side fought in WWII. So I was taught from a very early age to have respect and show our military respect. I still to this day I thank everyone I see and tell them "Welcome Home". I completely understand how angry it makes you feel. Take care, sending much love.
Wow... God Bless all of them. Thank them for me, please. It means the world to me. I am so glad you enjoyed it, and I appreciate the support. Much love to you as well.
Yes they do they come back with nightmares and all kinds of stories and they was treated like shit my daddy was in the US army my father died when his plane got shot down and it breaks me heart my heart to this day when somebody makes fun of a vet
Wow, it’s was one of my very favorite song growing. It’s great to heard it again! Thank you bro, u made me smile. I wish I can see them on tour in 2020. Happy New Year Bro!
I know how it feels to lose someone on Christmas my grandpa passed away on December the 23 of 2004. he told us I won't be here for Christmas the day before he passed away
Let me tell you now, I'm a Marine in 89 through 95, two wars, Desert storm, Bosnia. Biden, now,I wouldn't fight for anyone that controls my cherished country.
Sir THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SERVICE!!! I myself have many family members who were in the miltary and also very close friends. I know what it's like to see your family and friends off some where far away and those videos of them coming back home it brings tears to my eyes cause I know first hand how that is and how it feels. I've lived it.
Awesome song and reaction. There is a lot of times I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then. This line always hits me in the feels cause it's so very true. Blessings to you in 2020.
My dad fought in Vietnam. He was actually drafted. Once he was drafted they got the option to enlist. So he was drafted then enlisted in to the Marines. He to this day won't talk to me about what he did, saw, saved and so forth. All I can say is I am beyond proud of my daddy. Again, yes I'm 36, and still call him daddy. My sweet daddy is about to 74. I have letters he wrote to my mama when they were just friends, from Vietnam.
You are blessed to still have your Daddy, for sure. God Bless that man. Thank him for his service for me. And don't feel bad..lol. My sister is 44 and called our Dad Daddy until he passed.
I am very family oriented. So for me.. Family.. I always look forward to times when we are able to get together. Especially given that 3 of my 4 sisters are 7-8 hours away. So we don’t get to see each other often. I think mom would like to move up there given most her children and grandkids are in that specific area. But she’s always said, since Grandma is still around. She doesn’t want to move away from her yet. Whenever in high school when there was a high school activity/function or a family event going on at the same time. I always chose going to see my relatives.
@@BirdmansPlace there is definitely something innately special about that daddy daughter bond. You should totally check out Tough Little Boys by Gary Allan. Hope you have a great New Year as well 😊
Bret wrote that about his best friend who was a bodyguard and yes it’s true! Raising my son who 23 now, so very proud of him, he is my joy! Would love ❤️ more Poison how about some Motley Crue, do Dr Feel Good, Wide Side, Live Wire, Kick Start My Heart, Primal Scream and the beautiful ballad Home Sweet Home! Thanks!
There you go. My family is the same for me. Always good to have that something. Thank you for the kind words ma'am. I appreciate that. Much love to ya.
Bret Michaels may have been shaking due to low blood sugar (he is type 1 diabetic) The scene where the bodyguard picked him up and carried him off the stage was because he was having a low blood sugar attack but wanted to keep performing. He ended up in the hospital because of that. Not only the bodyguard but also the lead singer of another 80s group died also.. His name was Janie Lane of Warrant. They showed him in the video also.
The Red Letters in the good book... in the world we live in today it’s so hard for a lot of people to find anything to believe in. I have been away from my family for over a year working in Northern CA due to the Camp Fire in Paradise and I tell you what my brother the people in this community lost everything friends family there entire town. I’m not trying to sound depressing but these people some how some way between the grace of God and there pride came and continue to come together to rebuild there little town and if that ain’t something to believe in man I don’t know what is
My father was a Vietnam vet and we lost him in Nov. Of 2019...he never got to see his purple heart or any of his other medals until after his death and I had to fight for them...my whole world is shattered without him and I just want him back...the only good thing he got out of it was his military burial..
I feel that 100%. So sorry for your loss, and God Bless and thank both of you for his service. I am so glad you got those medals. I really wish he could have seen them. :( Much love to ya.
Great song! If you get the opportunity, check them out live, Brett Michael’s has been to Knoxville several times in the last few years, he is a showman on stage, works the crowd well and can actually still sing very well
Great reaction video! I have seen Poison in concert so many times... Most of their songs are lighter subject matter... Check out the video to Unskinny Bop. Enjoy!
I can't wait to see him and Posion with Mötley Crue, Def Leppard, and Joan Jett in August 2020... Awesome video and reaction man keep it up God bless you and your family bro 💯🙏👊
Yep...that's the tour I was talking about...lol...that's awesome. Enjoy it. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. God Bless you and yours as well. Much love to ya.
First thing buddy the veteran in the video is played by Bret's real life uncle. second of all yes he did get emotional and forget to lip sing when he seen the footage of his best friend which was his bodyguard. He stated in an interview, that he didn't know they were using the footage. Sorry about the typos. Voice recognition can be stupid!
This may be a bit off the wall for you, but I am throwing it out there. Birgitta Veksler. She is a Jew from Sweden. She was a pop star in Israel. After a near death experience she became a Christian. She sings incredible songs in Hebrew. Very powerful. Has a song ask God for guidance. Its about their neighbors wanting all the Jews to die. I sing out Elohim between cycles at the plant I work at. Its wonderful.
In a time I don't remember in a war they can't forget.. true words.. My brother-in-law who committed suicide an my bf's Daddy who committed suicide.. 30 yrs after being home. Nam truly screwed up our men and women that served.. and they came home to hate... I can't understand that.. I grew up with parents that raised me to respect all of our service members.. why did this happen back in the day... it's just wrong.
I got a call from a family member of my BF telling me that her Daddy hung himself in the basement of their family home Dec. 30.. I couldn't even call her.. I knew she was on her way from NC to MD... I just had to wait for her to get home to be there for her.
What makes me more mad is the fact that soldiers are doing the same in Iraq, but they are called heroes. Brett Michaels had a good friend was also the bands security. He ended up committing suicide. He was a Vietnam veteran. I was in Desert storm, and I saw what we did. I will support our military. I just didn't think it was right. My bestfriend is a Vietnam veteran, and he struggles still. He had dog shit on him when he got back.
@@BirdmansPlace hope you've had a good holiday.. just got to thinkin' of unconventional songs, that I first tried you on; 'you look like a girl' is another solid one by him, though. You'll be at 5k next time I pay attention, darlin', you're halfway there. Keep doin' the damn thing.

@@jeremywilliams1835 lol...not at all. I actually already have that one on it...lol
Def Leppard has the best drummer in my opinion. Rick Allen. One arm
I totally agree with you about the Vietnam vets my dad was a Vietnam vet he served during the Tet offensive ( look it up ) 1968 to 1969
I will do it. God Bless your Dad, and the rest of your family. If he's still around, thank him for his service for me. Much love to ya.
@@BirdmansPlace sadly my dad ( my hero ) passed away on april 18th 2015 and I found him on april 19th
I made everyone I knew listen to this back in 1990
lol...I do that with songs too. This is a good one.
@@BirdmansPlace hell yeah amigo!
That was his friend in the video and it is a true story. He was Bret's personal bodyguard
I know his pain my grandpa passed away on Christmas Eve. My family was with him while he was calling my grandma name
Wow....so sorry for your loss, but at least he found her right away. God Bless. Much love to ya.
God, my 3 amazing sons and my family is my somthing to believe in and makes me smile every day and great reaction birdman keep them comming 🙂
Oh wow...I didn't know that. I know Janie Lane. Thank you so much for the info. I really do appreciate it.
The Vietnam veteran portrayed in the video is his cousin Bob, who battled severe PTSD.
The Red Letters in the good book... in the world we live in today it’s so hard for a lot of people to find anything to believe in. I have been away from my family for over a year working in Northern CA due to the Camp Fire in Paradise and I tell you what my brother the people in this community lost everything friends family there entire town. I’m not trying to sound depressing but these people some how some way between the grace of God and there pride came and continue to come together to rebuild there little town and if that ain’t something to believe in man I don’t know what is
Amen, my brother. Amen. I couldn't agree more. Much love, brother.
@@BirdmansPlace ❤thank you so much..
This was about his best friend he wrote this song the night he found out he died
Fantastic song! Check out 'Lay Your Body Down On Me' by Poison.
Yes it was. I will put it on the list. Thank you, my friend. Much love to ya.
Great song! If you get the opportunity, check them out live, Brett Michael’s has been to Knoxville several times in the last few years, he is a showman on stage, works the crowd well and can actually still sing very well
I will have to do that. Thanks for the heads up. Much love, brother.
Great reaction video! I have seen Poison in concert so many times... Most of their songs are lighter subject matter... Check out the video to Unskinny Bop. Enjoy!
I will do it. And yes..Poison is pretty awesome. This one was pretty mindblowing. Thank you for the request and support. Much love to ya.
My BIL was in Vietnam and was affected by agent orange. He died in 2013 from cancer
The Vietnam vet he refers to was his uncle.
@@BirdmansPlace you're very welcome my friend much love to ya also bro
that verse about christmas eve is true
So damn sad. Can't even imagine getting that call. Horrible. :-(
Politicians are the ones who should be blamed for war, not the soldiers.
Trust in God Birdman. He's there and when you feel him you have to react take action and believe.
Couldn't agree more, brother. I agree 100%. Much love to ya.
You should do a reaction to go rest high on the mountain by Vince gill
It is on my list, my friend. Thank you so much. God Bless.
God!!
Check out Poisons "Life goes on"...
No ticker tape parade for our veterans who went through HELL AND NEVER CAME BACK😡🤬🤬🤬🤬
Another with a good message is Motley Crue Fallen Angel.
It actually happened
Truth…his bodyguard
It's real .
I love off the wall. I will check it out. Thank you for the request and support. I appreciate it. Much love to ya.
Any specific songs?
Yes, the guys that got drafted could have dodged it by going to Canada but, they were ridiculed. Either way they were screwed!!
My niece is my something to believe in
In a time I don't remember in a war they can't forget.. true words..
You should check out the Fat Electrician he tells military stories that are great!
I got a call from a family member of my BF telling me that her Daddy hung himself in the basement of their family home Dec. 30.. I couldn't even call her.. I knew she was on her way from NC to MD... I just had to wait for her to get home to be there for her.
It was his best friend and bodyguard
Something to believe in is a lifeline, brother. My number one is Jesus. My faith is what works for me.
Works for me too, brother. Just knowing that when I'm gone there will be peace, and I will see my loved ones again is mine.
Man...that is horrible. So damn sad. :-(
My grandbabies
Beautiful...that's perfect.
Check out "Champion" by Moriah Formica! She is one of the best new female rockers out there right now.
