    These were the stars of the 80's, it probably won't happen again. This was after a music awards show. Michael and Lionel wrote this song too. Prince made a song for the album, he was too cool to be there at the time. Quincy Jones told them to leave their ego at the door and they did.

    • @momD612
      @momD612 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    • @ronnix23
      @ronnix23 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Prince always recorded his vocals alone in the studio. That's how he did his best work. He couldn't do that there, and he was not going to be on any recording if he didn't feel that he was at his best. He offered to do a guitar solo on it, but Quincy told him flat out we need you to sing not play guitar. Prince did support the cause by submitting a song for the project, and he sent Sheila E. there as a representative from his camp.

      Love Prince, hard to think of anyone who was as talented at, well literally everything, every instrument, lyrics, production. The things that made him great also made him a bit of a control freak. I could name other musical geniuses that I might say the same about, but none as overall talented or creative as Prince. I have often thought over the years that he could have enacted so much more change in the world, but he lived in his head mostly. As I do, and many of us do. So it's not a criticism. I think it's what makes Prince the enigma that he was.

    In 1984/85 Africa, specifically Ethiopia suffered a severe drought, that killed millions from famine. This song was made to give aid to Africa and raised over 100 million for the cause. No artist took any money. Now, if you notice during this, that there is absolutely no racism happening. No segregation, no egos, just respect for each other and legends coming together as human beings to help a great cause. That's the way it should be. People helping people. If everyone did this we would be a better world.

    This all started with the world watching the famine in Ethiopia on our TV sets and a couple of singers in England deciding they needed to do something. They put together a super group of British Pop stars and produced "Do they know its Christmas?" In 1984. They raised a little over $10mil (a heck of a lot of money back then). The following year Harry Belafonte wanted to do an American single to help. He, ken kragen, Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers, and Stevie Wonder started putting it together. Once Quince Jones got involved he kind of took it over and basically told everyone what they would and would not be doing. He checked everyones egos at the door and brow beat everyone into submission, which apparently was needed because everyone kept putting evything off including writing the song itself. When it was all said and done they raised over $60mil.
    As soon as production wrapped on "We are the world" Quincy Jones called David Foster and said we need to do a Canadian version. So in 1985 Canada pop stars echoed their American colleagues with the single "Tears are not enough". Later a huge concert event was put together called Live Aid that went on to raise more money. While this all went down the Heavy Metal guys were bummed that no one asked them to join so they did their own and in 1986 released "Stars".

    They showed a behind the scenes for this and MJ and Lionel Richie made a sign for all singer to check their egos at the door.
    Also, after the Haiti earthquake a decade or two ago, they did another one of these to raise funds for Haiti. It’s not as legendary as this 1 but still pretty good.
    No worries about pausing, if anyone wants to see the video, they can search for it and listen to it paused free. You do you, we come to see your reactions. I wish I could react but most songs I have heard. I haven’t watched too many of the videos because I was never a MuchMusic (MTV’s version in Canada) guy.

    Your reaction is how we felt listening to it for the first time in 1985. Sheer joy, glee and excitement with every voice that rang out. We LOVED, LOVED, LOVED every single artist in this song. ..including those in the chorus. They were tired, hungry, busy folks and they stayed up all night into the morning recording this song to help others. We are so grateful to each and every one of them. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    They were told when arriving to leave their egos at the door. It was for a good cause and they all did amazing. There was a drought in Africa and this was to raise money to help the starving over there. They had celebrities live on tv answering the phones for donations. It truly was an amazing thing.

    About a dozen years later after this video, one of the singers, Bob Dylan, his son Jacob Dylan and his group The Wallflowers had a big hit with the song One Headlight. You couldn't go 5 minutes without hearing it on the radio or somewhere in 1997. I really didn't like it.
    Then The Wallflowers appeared on the Video Music Awards and sang One Headlight but they were accompanied by another singer from this video, The Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen.
    I watched this performance and I was _floored!_ It starts out with Jacob singing but then Bruce takes over and he makes the song _his._ But then it's like he doesn't challenge Jacob but instead encourages him to take it back...and Jacob does! It's like they're running a race and it's only because Jacob feels Bruce right on his heals that he pushes himself to stay in the lead and Bruce knows this and is happy to help bring the best out in him.
    One of the most amazing performances I ever saw!!!
    After that I loved the song One Headlight.
    I highly recommend you watch it, just make sure it's the one with Bruce Springsteen with them. It's available on TH-cam and it is just so great!
    Best Regards!

    I'm 49, so I guess I was maybe 11 when this came out? It was the first time I ever cried, over music (not just being a kid brat having a tantrum). This song changed my life, and to this day I seek out music that makes me feel something deeply. What I see now the most on this video is all the smiles, the joy on all the performer's faces. They're not just going through the motions, they really thought they could change the world through this song. And in some ways, I think they did. It's still with me, as a middle aged white American male, I have so much more empathy and a strong desire to be in service of fellow humans than I probably would have otherwise. Sometimes change like this, maybe the millions of dollars that were donated from this song didn't go that far, but it created a whole generation that view the world differently than we might have otherwise.

    “We Are the World” was the fastest-selling single in U.S. history when it came out in 1985, and was the first single ever to go multiplatinum. It was the best-selling single of 1985 and was the best-selling single of the entire decade of the 1980s. It is the eighth best-selling physical single of all time.

    Iconic song of the 80s, for sure! Also, non-singers were involved, as well. Did you spot Dan Ackroyd in there...he's there!! and Harry Belafonte. All the Jackson family was involved, I believe. So great to see some of our outstanding people who have since passed on. Check out the Wikipedia for this song to get all the names. Most important, the legendary Quincy Jones was the director!

    Just watch the video watch it on your own. It’s a powerful video. I remember when it came out I was five years old and I’m pushing for them to do a remake with a 35 year reunion in 2025. I’m also digital creator and I also have my own TH-cam channel, this literally changed the 80s about bringing the charities out and we have more than just Africa with this video with Africa. We stopped the hunger end of this day. The donations from the 80s are still helping them.
