On Christmas Eve 1989, Poison lead singer Bret Michaels' huge Polynesian bodyguard died alone in his Palm Springs hotel room. His name was Kimo, and much like the rest of the band, he became heavily involved with alcohol, drugs, and women, which had taken a toll on his health. Kimo was also a personal friend of Michaels and when the Poison vocalist was informed of his mate's death, he reacted by locking himself in his room and writing this song. He just about loses it in the video, he stops singing and begins to tear. That was completely unrehearsed.
Kimo died in 1988. Flesh and Blood came out in July 1990, records simply didn't get churned out that fast! Bret also wrote something to believe in quite some time after Kimo died and it was inspired by many events (as you can see in the video) including his type 1 diabetes and the death of Rikki's dog. Songfacts isn't very factual.
My dad was a Vietnam vet and said they never had a welcome home, no fancy greetings. Most people spit on them when they came back. My dad died in 2014 from Agent Orange , that was his thanks for protecting and fighting for his country.

My dad was a Vietnam vet also, same thing he told me. Spit on and called baby killer, definitely no thank you for your service and he did 3 tours over there. It's very sad how those men where treated so cruel by their peers, usually people their age who didn't go and fight.

@@racheltassin2270 I wish I could but unfortunately he died on Christmas day in 1992. He was a proud veteran and generally cared more about others who he felt had a worse experience than he had over there got the appreciation they deserved. Your kind words did mean alot to me though, thank you.

I think I know why this was about a Vietnam veteran who served in Vietnam and did things over there that he really did not want to do yet did because he had orders to do those things because you never where you were gonna be ambushed or some kid coming in with a shoe box that's wired and goes kaboom and you have to do what has to be done
@@todd9323 Bret’s friend and bodyguard Kimo is who this song is about. He served in Nam and came back unwanted and took his own life. Bret said he would happily give this song back to have his friend back.
@@todd9323 My father's ex brother in law Walter fought in Vietnam(died of cancer from agent orange) in the special forces. He begged god for forgiveness everyday for an incident that happened in Vietnam. My dad told Walter he should tell a priest or someone to get it off his chest. When he found out he was dying he told my dad the story. He and his squad were approaching a village on a mission. As they approached they saw a bunch of farmers/civilians on the road or path leading from the village. As they approached one of the civilians was crying and carrying her baby out in front of her, Walter and the squad tried to tell her to get back and to stop but she wouldn't. She got pretty close and the squad panicked and fired on the women, and unfortunately shot and killed the baby as well. Underneath the baby's blanket was a grenade.
This is one of the realest song among all hair bands of the 80s. One of my favs to come out of this era.
For those of us who loved Poison early on, it's amazing to see how their their vibe changed over those three albums from the lewd songs like "I Want Action" and "Talk Dirty to Me" to a n anthem for the real people working the grind with "Nothing But A Good Time" to a hopeful and nostalgic song of faith and regret in "Something to Believe In" is a huge shifting evolution in the messages they were giving in their art.
Great song , one of my favorites 😀 My father in law served 20 years in Korea and Vietnam, people where ugly to those veterans, My husband was born in Germany 1962 they saw things that will haunt them for a life time. Thank you, to anybody else that served our country 🇺🇸
I think this is Poison's best song and by far, their most meaningful. This was off their third album and the albumn showed more mature song writing. This song gets to me.
This was always my favorite Poison song, Bret speaks truths in this song. I've seen Poison live once and Bret solo live. When I saw Bret solo, I got to meet him before the show, he was standing outside his bus in the parking lot where we parked and I spoke to him for a good 15 mins or so, he is totally different than his image on tv. He's very kind and we spoke about diabetes because we're both diabetics (he's type 1 since he was 6 yrs old and i'm type 2) we talked about tattoos because I had just gotten my first one that day, he was just so down to earth and friendly.
3rd and best album personally although good tunes on all of them. Life loves a tragedy is another beauty

The song is actually talking about a couple of different men one is a Vietnam vet and the other is his best friend the band's bodyguard who literally did die alone in a Palm Springs hotel room. Those two stories about those two men are intertwined with Brett's observations of religious charlatanism and economic class division. Such a smartly written song and a beautiful performance
Vietnam veterans came back from the war and were literally spit upon. Disgusting. The vast majority of the men who went over there to fight were drafted and many were poor, minorities, and or uneducated. Most didn't choose the fight but they answered their country's call and what we did to them upon their return is unforgivable

I came to say this. I understand wanting the lyrics so not to miss a word, but, yeah, they need to video to fully appreciate this heart-wrenching beautiful song.
This song makes me cry, every time, since I first heard it in 1990. My Dad fought in Nam, for 2 tours and was treated exactly as the song stated when he returned. He was a teacher, his student dropped his classes, etc. Vietnam ruined his life and cost me a Dad, because he never came to look for me when he came home. The war messed him up so badly. He finally emerged from it, got himself straightened out and I met him back in 2002. He's a great man and a victim of our government and warmongers. All he was doing was fighting for his country, as he was programmed to do. Glad you guys were able to feel the song. Great reaction.

As a Marine in the later years of Vietnam the only thing that bothered us was the political side of things. We were in a firefight that lasted 6 hours, the last hour was hand to hand with knives. 6 of remained at the end. Afterwards they told us 68 Marines went against 239 NVA. We landed in NY city. As a group we marched through the airport daring someone to get in our face. OOH RAH.

It is truly an amazing tune with lyrics that were perfect for the tune and spoke volumes on social issues of that era. This is what my generation dealt with.

The TV preacher he's referring to is Jimmy Swaggart who got caught in money scandals, it also applies to Jim Baker. The best friend who died alone in Palm Springs was his body guard he used on the road. They grew to be very close and if you watch the video it shows him walking off stage with Bret at a concert.
You can apply the preacher thing to any evangelist.
@@Frostrazor very true, I used those two examples because they where big stories at the time. Bakers PTL empire came crashing down in 1987 and Swaggart got with prostitutes and inappropriate use of money in 1988, the song is from 1990.
@@seandooley226 Yeah, a lot of rock and metal bands reference them in lyrics because of the bad press bands would get, being accused of satanism, corrupting youth, etc, but then you have these guys who were supposed to be righteous being worse than most. Poison, Ozzy, and Suicidal Tendencies are some notable examples of bands who took a shot at them.
So much emotion in alot of the bands from this era that alt of people dont know about. I was in high school from 87 to 91 and Im greatful for that. Such good times and good music. I remember seeing this video the first time on MTV at my best friends house. I lived in the country and only had 3 channels up till 1992. Great reaction. I got to see Poison live with Tesla in 88 and then Poison with Cinderella Slaughter and Dokken in 2000. Awesome both times.
Brett Michaels best friend he is speaking of was his life long friend and bodyguard who died of a drug overdose by himself

Got to meet Bret Michaels and he invited me on his tour bus .we must have talked for two hours. We talked about music But the discussion turned personal. He has diabetes and so does his daughter. My sister had just been diagnosed with cancer. Bret drove with me to. The hospital to my sister and He talked to her for about an hour. This guy is very down to earth and the the real deal as a person. This man cares about people. He brought some. Things with him and autographed them for my sister. My sister wanted to go to the show and this was Poisons. 20th anniversary tour. Believe it or not we still email and call each other from time to time. Bret Michaels will always be in my family's hearts.I have met a lot of musicians over the years some were very nice people but hit my Heart ❤️ like Bret Michaels. By the way Poison kicked ass that night.so for now Peace ☮️ Out

That's why it's rare that you hear most 80's bands unless you find an 80's or 90's station that plays it on the radio today. Mozart & Chopin aren't exactly being played loud going down a highway nowadays.
I was a huge Poison fan in the 80’s and still
love their music today. They are one of the few hard rock bands who do a heartfelt ballad like this and not get accused of selling out. Many rock bands of that era lost their core fan base who felt that they’d gone soft.
In 1975 when we came back, I remember signs in Norfolk VA..... Sailors and dogs stay off the grass... a lot of us came home strung out on herion.... only way we could cope
Best song by Poison. They raise alot of money for Vets with this in their concerts. You take the high road and I'll take the low road. I was born in 64 and this war touched my family as well.
This song hits you deep! Many Vietnam vets came home without a hero’s welcome! They where called child killers! Misfits and some other words I can even say here on the comments! I have family members that served in Vietnam, and they to this day don’t even wanna talk about the war! A lot of them came back home with post dramatic syndrome and many of them became homeless and and suicidal! The government and the American people didn’t help them at all! It took a very long time for all of them to be recognized as heroes! A little too late if you ask me! Some wounds never heals! And that is one of those. This song describes it to the “T”. ✌️🙏definitely one of the greatest ballads from the 80s.

I just saw Poison, Motley Crue, Def Leppard and Joan Jett at The Stadium Tour on July 14th and 15th! Cleveland on the 14th recorded all the set of Motley Crue & Poison from Cleveland as 1 video each and Motley Crue from the Cincinnati Ohio show the next day whole set as 1 video! They were all awesome 👏 but Motley Crue & Poison are my favorite, I couldn’t record all the bands but I did 2 of them, there 4K HDR and I was in row 6 by the catwalk in Cleveland on Nikki’s side of stage and row 4 on Nikki’s side of stage in Cincinnati, footage turned out phenomenal! There up on my channel if anyone wants to check them! So glad you guys did this song 🎶 by Poison it’s one of my favorites by them! Great reaction🤟🎶🥰

The video to this is a heart puller. So beautiful. The best friend he's referring to is Jani Lane who was the lead singer from the band "Warrant" he passed away in a hotel room with a piece of paper on him that said, "I am Jani Lane". That always broke my heart.
That's funny cause I saw Poison in 1990 with Warrant. Maybe the Jani Lane I saw was a doppelganger.

Nah man he’s talking about his friend and body guard who died. And if you watch the video you can see recordings of them together. The manager didn’t tell Brett that they were gonna put a video of them two in the music video and Brett was so upset when he saw it that the filming of the video had to stop. Go watch the music video. The friend he’s taking about is the big Hawaiian guy.

Poison is a good band. This one reminds me of "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" which their fans made it big when it came out in 1988. War is no one's friend. From my understanding, it's hard to readjust back into normal life after being in a war for so long. Props to everyone who struggled coming back from war and made it.

I’m 57. I grew up in a era where several of my uncles and many of their friends that they grew up with were in the military. Most served in Viet Nam. All of them made it back alive. Only one from that circle was injured.
This song helped carry me through the harshest times in my life, especially when I lost my Grandma earlier this year. I sang it to vent my emotions, and whenever I did, my sister said that I had never sounded better. I love this song, and I thank you for reacting to it. ❤🩹

this is what you missed in the 80's but i didn't i heard so many great rock bands and country singers it was a great time to be a teenager at the time.
Back then PTSD was called shell shocked. When our military came home from that war without a victory, Americans spat on them.

The friend he was talking about was his bodyguard who was a dear friend to him.
It wasn't because they lost. It was because it was an unjust war. The unfortunate part is that the vets, most of which were drafted and forced to go over there, were also victims of an unjust war. However, the hippies of the time placed blame on them as well.
Asia and BJ, Brett Michael's, Rikki Rocket and Bobby Dall are from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, just 17 miles from my Hometown of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania! My Sister In Law used to go to High School with them
Some of Poison's best songs are off an album some Poison fans never paid attention to because C.C. wasn't with them. I think you'd agree with me if you checked it out...the album is called Native Tongue

I know people used to make fun of Poison, called them "Posin' back in the day. But they had a legit good song here with a lot of quality & substance. Good on them for that.

A song that talks about PTSD and what those affected by it go through is "The Enemy Inside" by Dream Theater.
Also check out Every Rose Has It’s Thorn and Stand for more of their serious side. Not many “hair bands” were doing this type of music.
The opening line about the preacher stealing money from his hands is a reference to several high profile scandals involving famous “televangelists” as they were called at the time. Mega church pastors who were on nationwide TV.
Yes PTSD is very real and it never leaves you. I’m not a veteran but I have PTSD from childhood trauma. I remember being a child and thinking I couldn’t wait to become an adult because I thought all this in my mind would go away when I became a “ grown up”…makes that line “sometimes I wish I didn’t know now the things I didn’t know then” hit extra hard 💔💔💔

Many of the soldiers were drafted and forced to go fight. Then they came home and were called “baby killers”. It was a very hard time in this country. We were very divided, almost as bad as we are now. I remember going to school and wearing a POW bracelet. They were in support of our soldiers that were held prisoner for yrs. Many never made it back.

Thanks for leaving in a time when it was thanks bye. This was in a time in our country that a lot of people (especially young people) in our country didn't agree with our soldiers going over to Vietnam and fighting. So when the soldiers come home they got treated like crap spit on yelled at cussed at & left to fend for themselves and try to make a life after going through all that was very little help.
The song Ride the wind is a very good song by them that most people don't know about 😢.
My favorite ballad.. Craziest part, I don't consider myself a fan of Poison. But this damn guitar solo is among the best of all time, due to actually FEELING it.

I love Asia's comments post-video, they are so on-point..Our vets are often times just pushed aside when the serviceman's or woman time is done..The government needs to do a better job looking after the vets which is another reason why this video gets me every time I hear it..

It's not just about the vets if you listen to it it's about a lot of other stuff. Homeless people preachers taking advantage of people taking their money. Vietnam vets when they got back were spit on by people here in our own country for things that they had no control over the things that they did.

This and Unskinny Bop are the only two Poison songs still on my playlists to this day.....great song and tribute to his buddy.
This song always makes me tear up. My father is a Vietnam Vet now in his 70s and after a cancer scare, he broke down and told us what he experienced in the war. Which was something he would never tell anyone before no matter how many times it came up or how many times someone would ask. He finally told us about his horrific experiences overseas and his own brush with death. How when he woke up in the hospital he was trying to understand why them and not him. My family is not particularly religious, least of all my father and myself, but I know he has some regrets over what he did in Vietnam in the name of freedom. Now, he has several medical conditions from being exposed to Agent Orange.

Great song by poison
I was in Army during early 90s. Did a military parade in San Francisco and was cursed at was spit upon for actions during Vietnam. I WASN'T even born during that time!! So after 9 11 happened and people changed how they felt I still won't stand to be recognized during sporting events. Number one is that's not why I signed up but most importantly most people changed their view and are fickle and don't want recognition as well. My wife always says I should stand and I always ask her.. Why??? They didn't stand with me during my time of service. Why should I honor them now? They made their choice pre 911 and don't care for any praise now
Just saw Poison with Joan Jett, Def Leppard, and Motley Crew, Poison was by far the tightest, Bret still sounds great.

Last night I went to our local highschool football game and was disgusted by the number of people who refuse to stand. the two people in there wheelchairs I saw did manage to stand though. Shows you the level of privilege and blessings some people take for granted.

This song is based on a true story. Bret's uncle was in Vietnam and his "best friend" died of a drug overdose during Poison's Christmas break back in 1989.
His son is just amazing and it's so accurate and so many levels. I love poison and this is probably my favorite song!
