    I had to get rid of it because he had this awful habit of bunching up into a ball and running over loose change. I tried catching him but he was way too fast. Are they suppose to be blue and wear sneakers?

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mind Magic Films I had my original hedgehogs shipped to me on airlines (same like you would fly on). I later found some locally. But basically just look on google for local breeders or animal expos. The animal expo that happens twice a month near me usually has hedgehogs. Usually you can find an animal expo not too far from you.

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I kept and bred over 50 hedgehogs. All mine were calm and tame. Handled daily from 1 week old. I did have one that was a bit of a brat. But she calmed down after a couple minutes out of cage. But yeah this is how properly bred and socialized hedgehogs should act. Sadly, a lot of bad breeders out there and inexperienced buyers.

    This is a great video for people who see an animal and decide spur of the moment they want one. To be informed ahead of time can let them know if they really do want one so they don't make them a disposable pet which is bad for the animal. It also tells people not familiar with a particular animal on how to properly care for them. Some won't read a book but would look at a video like this. This is a great service for the animal to be sure they are properly cared for and hopefully in a home where they will be cared for and not neglected.

    Awesome video. I bought my hedgehog from someone who didn't take care of him. He was taken to the vet immediately after I purchased him because his cage was horrid. He had internal and external mites. Malnourished and nails were long and split. I'm happy to say he is mite free and very healthy. I'm so glad I purchased him or he may not be alive today. DONT BUY PETS if you're not going to properly care for them!

    My sister rescues wild hedgehogs in the fall, when she finds ones just after the first frost, that are too small and skinny to survive the winter. She then cares for them just long enough to fatten them up, so they can hibernate. It's fun to give them options, letting them "find" and choose good building materials they decide they want for their nest - some of them have very unique preferences. You have to make sure that you also keep exposing them to the cold, so that the hibernation instinct kicks in, and once they doze off, put them in a cold part of the basement to sleep the months away until the snow melts in the spring.

    OK - I checkout your hedgehog videos and you don't address a few things like, lifespan, illnesses/diseases, how to tell male from female and if they are loners or can live within a community. Also, are they able to breed at any time or do they go into estrus?

    • @mimim.2175
      @mimim.2175 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They are loners, they are happiest solitary:) Life span is 3-5 years. Illnesses....well there's a degenerative nervous system disease called "Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome" that's similar to human MS; occasionally they develop it, but it's rare. Males have what looks like a large, pink belly button, it's actually their penis! Females don't have that. The females don't have cycles, they have induced estrus. So they can technically breed at any time. Wasn't sure if you were asking, or just making suggestions for future videos.....if you were just making suggestions, sorry! If you really were asking a question, there's a bit of info:)

    • @Karmah01
      @Karmah01 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mimi Markowski Thanks Mimi! I am really asking! I have been considering getting a hedgehog for sometime now, but want to REALLY research about them and know what I am getting into. Too many times people don't research and dive right in with their eyes closed and the pet suffers. I don't need to know if the hedgehog is right for me, but rather if I am right for the hedgehog. Can't have too much info as far as I'm concerned. :) Thanks again!

    • @mimim.2175
      @mimim.2175 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh oh google "Hedgehog Care Free E-Book", there's a LARGE breeder that has an accurate book out on their care, and it's free! West Coast Hedgehogs I think is the place. Check it out:) And make sure they're legal in your state!

      ***** i have one for winter, hibernating now, & will be released in april.. sure it s a nice pet, smart with character, but it s not clean at all & worst thing it really stinks (a european one, no idea if other are "better") no matter how often you clean his place..

    • @leeparker2960
      @leeparker2960 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** If you truly want a hog what about when you are in school or at work. Will you still have time every night to give them hours of attention. "fifteen minutes a day is all they need" is what little kids say to make themselves feel better for not spending the proper amount of time with their animals.
      You are your hedgehogs sole companion. They are very solitary creatures but if you want them to feel safe and happy around humans then you need to handle them for a good portion of time every day. It can be as easy as holding them in your lap while you do homework.
      Are you also prepared for the annual vet visit and late night emergency room visit. They will nibble on almost anything and can get stuff impacted in their systems. Surgery is a nice $1,000 bill.
      Can you clean the litter and cage daily and sanitize it weekly no matter what circumstances your life is going through?
      Can you still love an animal for eight years who will bite you every day and huff no matter how much attention you give him/her?
      Thank you for researching. Too few people do and throw their animals at a rescue after a couple months or years(like the rescue I work at). It's hard to see it happen but so many happy people come in and want to adopt an animal, and even people who make it through our screening process still bring animals they recently adopted back to us. One girl tried to EXCHANGE her ferret with us. I was appalled.

      1: Hedgehogs can be prickly if they're in a ball. So, if they're balled up, don't pick them up. try to pick them up from underneath them. Handling them= nicer hedgie.
      2: No, they don't smell bad.

    • @halleys.comett
      @halleys.comett 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Only if the quills are up or they are in a ball

      most of te time when i see that its regarding chinchillas and how you're not supposed to bathe them which is true actually and can kill you chinchilla. Basically due to their fur if you bathe them in water and do not dry them well mold can grow in their fur because the moisture get trapped in their fur. Also if you do not dry them correctly you can overheat them which can also make them very sick.

    nice video. when my Dad was stationed in Germany in the late 60's early 70's, we could find hedgehogs in the bushes. i had one as a pet for a long time, and was very tame. i even brought it to the states via airplane hidden in my Mom's purse, very sweet animal.

    I got turned off from this video when he started talking about not buying animals that are not tame. Why should animals not find a home because they weren't given extra care? Many breeders see their litters as profit, not friends. It's up to the owner to see their purchase as a friend. I've tamed all my animals. It takes time and patience and trust. An animal isn't just going to like you. Would you walk up to a stranger, follow them around and try to talk to them all day? No. That's naive. Lord, are people really this ignorant?

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Keanna Support bad breeders, and more and more untame, unhandled animals get bred. Stop buying pets from bad breeders, and they have no sales, and they stop breeding. Simple my friend. Logic.

    • @whatifeel9507
      @whatifeel9507 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Earthling1984 Sadly, that's not how it works. If you could just shut down bad breeding companies, petco would have been out of business a long time ago. From unhandles animals, to cages that are too smart, and unhealthy foods they are way over priced. Animals shouldn't be not given a chance simply because they need a little bit more work. And there's laws for animal safety. If you feel someone is a shitty breeder, you CAN report that person. They could see the inside of a prison. But not handling the animals you breed is not a crime.

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      If more people were smart and didn't buy from them, they would be shut down. But sadly humans aren't very smart.

      @whatifeel9507 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Earthling1984 I watched your video on bearded dragons 100 times before I went out and got my beardie. I just don't agree that animals shouldn't have good home because they're harder to tame due to lack of handling from their breeder. They're not unhealthy. Just skittish. That is a fixable problem of little cost.

    I got a hedgehog from a guy in my class who didn't have the time to take care of it. He gave me a ton of bedding and I thought I was supposed to change it 1 time every two days, but now that you informed me it was one week I'll save a lot more. Also I was oblivious to the fruits and vegetables, so thank you for that

  • @mattk6315
    @mattk6315 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    For hedgehogs I recommend using blankets with no fringe, and low lint levels, like fleece, and just use that on the floor of the cage, because they will eat the bedding that is shredded. I also give them a small blanket square of the same material to snuggle in in their house.

    • @mattk6315
      @mattk6315 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also my hedgehog definitely bonded to me, she would run to me over hiding spots when placed in a room, and she would just chill in my lap.

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recommend Aspen bedding. I have used it for over 40 hedgehogs. Its easy and safe. Never had a sick hedgehog. And no, they don't eat it.

    You should make one about Nile monitors. It's horrible how many people buy a Nile monitor because of its cheap price before realizing what they are actually like. I've got an entire channel dedicated to Nile monitors. Most people Dee the cheap price tag and don't realize how much work they are. they also don't realize that 99% of them will bite you constantly from the first time you handle them. I have a bunch of videos showing how tame they can become with proper care but most people don't understand their behavior and in MOST cases they make terrible companions. They can also reach 5 feet in the first year of life which is utterly overwhelming for new owners. I love your channel and would love it if you mentioned my channel. If my issues were truly addressed Florida would not have its issues with invasive species.

    My hedgehog's most favourite food was scrambled egg made with milk only no butter/fat to keep calories down. He loved butter but only allowed a lick on special occasions. Lean ham was popular with him too and the mealworms were gobbled up in seconds. One word of caution, please be careful to keep your hedgehogs play area free from long hair strands as it can get wrapped around its leg and over time if unnoticed gets embedded under the skin and cut the circulation off. Rare, but vets says it does happen.

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I've had over 50 hedgehogs. Never any issues, injury, or illness. All I kept lived over 6 years, and, a few over 8 years (a record?)! Milk and butter are not recommended for hedgehogs. I would not suggest anyone feed that. Eggs are fine for hedgehogs. Always look up what foods you plan to feed so you know if they are safe. Most people think milk is safe for any animal, but, it's not.

      +Jacob Duffles Andrade Yes, that is why only single level cages. Of course, I am Earthling, my hedgehog was in no danger by an edge with me around. But they need a single level cage and shouldn't be left up high on anything unattended.
