It's refreshing to watch you two, because you don't edit out things that don't work according to the plan, you allow yourselves to be vulnerable to the rest of the world and that right there is one of the reasons I love to watch your channel. You are real and don't apologize for it. I admire your work, your projects and your heart. Keep up the good work you two!! Love the doggies too.
One Suggestion, run the downspout from the eves all the way to the ground and put a 45 joint at the bottom The reason is the water will blast out a gulley where it hits the earth, put a short straight section also to direct the flow and cover this section with gravel to hold it in place. I speak from experience. I did what you are doing coming from a barn roof to a holding pond and it took a year but it destroyed the earth where the pipe shot the water down. After I fixed it the way I suggested to do it, it has been working over 5 years with no problems. I also put larger flat Rocks in the bottom of the flow bed it helped to stop the erosion of the dirt. Good luck , I liked the angle of the pipe coming off the eves.
When the chickens sees you it always means food especially if you give them the peelings from the kitchen and the odd green plants, sad that you have not succeed with your rocket mass heater sound like you have the right attitude Jim you will get there eventually thanks for the video
Great job, Jessica, on the gravel trench. You take your time to do it well and skillfully. May all your projects turn out perfectly. You are quite the artist.
Another thing I don't recall reading in the books - If you don't know what was in the barrel, one should rinse it out prior to cutting. If there was flammable liquid inside, it could be potentially dangerous cutting into the barrel.
Love seeing what Jessica gets up to, she was growing the onion that shoots and next to her is a lovely onion plant, great job Jess you can always use the leaves in salads. The flat wide open space you can look far into the distance where the sky meets the land and the lovely red soil oh how I miss that. Youve is chasing a bird on the roof my dog does that.
I’m so sorry Jim, it’s so frustrating putting in a lot of time and effort and having to do it all over. You had to remove the paint and everything, but now you have the practice so it will go smooth once you get the barrels. The new plaster mix is working great, and the drainage is looking amazing! We had to put in a ton of drainage here and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit!
I think you are right about your barrels! ........ but if they taper you could just invert one and they will slide over each other? I seem to remember you want a 2" gap between your barrel and the vortex chamber (riser). It might be a good idea to coat the outer face of your insulation with refactory cement to prolong the life of the insulation as it has a non smooth surface! always good to see progress ..... and your Land stream looks great too (Jess should be proud)!
Great to see the inside work! Hoping you remember to coat the bags behind the RMH before you get the heater permanently installed. Excited to see all the progress.
Hey, Jess! Love the rock bed drainage ditch! You probably want a couple of big rocks for the downspout to hit first, other wise it will get totally rutted out.
I know that there are 55 gallon barrels that have slightly different diameters, and the come with different shapes (some smooth, some with ridges). I used a 55 gallon barrel to build an Ugly Drum Smoker (UDS). It has a flat lid, and it seems that the flat lids tend to warp. But people on various UDS Facebook pages recommended trying to find a barrel that a Weber BBQ lid would fit on, and they said to take the lid with you when you go looking. The lid won't fit on my current UDS, but I was able to find a barrel that the Weber lid will fit on (it has a slightly narrower diameter). So you are right about that.
Standard 55 gallon (208 Liters) steel drums have inside dimensions of 22.5" (572 mm) diameter and 33.5" (851 mm) height. The outside dimensions are typically 23" (584 mm) diameter and 34.5" (876 mm) height. Hope that helps.
Best video yet! Opening with the door brings me back to memories of 1968, Deja Vu lol great album, by the way. The drainage system is top notch, Jess. Jim, it's a learning experience, good practice. Lol
The trench design is good. Big rocks in the trench will allow the water to flow through. The gravel on top will prevent sand from flooding in quickly. Eventually, enough sand will flow in to plug up between the rocks but you should get some years out of it first. If you get a backhoe out there again, dig a reservoir and fill it with big rocks. Run rain catching trenches to it. Each rain fall will wash sands, silts and clays into the reservoir. These fine materials will seal the bottom of the reservoir in a while and then it will hold water for weeks. I have an old cast iron Jotul wood stove. It works well and is simple. Good Luck, Rick
If you can't find strait barrels, you can probably make the tapered ones work, just make sure where you join them you use the same end, I gather the widest point is the top of the barrels? if so male that the point where they join so the narrow section is top of the RMH and (cut off) bottom. As you said, the barrels you had were what's available locally and sometimes you have to adapt and male what's available work.
Very informative video. An Adobe mix seems to be a lot more complicated than I thought. Lots of cracking on all the videos I watch.. Ultimately going to buying stucco😪 I hope this last formula works for you. Interior a bit easier. A gravel drainage ditch is always a good idea...of course when the plumb is right.( draining downward away from what you want dry) and the rocket blaster is a challenging project I am eager to see work. ❤ Keep on keeping on. 😍
Glad to see the work being done on the inside. I was starting to get concerned about the structural integrity of the dome with so much erosion happening inside. I really thought the feed bags would hold up better than they did. That is something else for your viewers to learn from. 👍👍
@1:28 Could you not wrap the inside of the dome with chicken wire by placing a wedge of wood per foot ( does not have to be a large piece of wood, just big enough to accept the staple. ) to staple the wire to, and then a plaster/clay to seal the inside
Good information on the measurements on the 55 galloon barrel... thank you! I hope to build my own rocket stove in the basement someday.... keep the first floor warm in the winter !
I drag my Harbor Freight 3.5 cement mixer out of the barn. To get it ready for making a pad for the storage build, For a new well house. How i drag it from the barn to the back of the house was? My riding lawn mower. The front leg had a hole on the bottom stand. I have a hole in the back of the ball receiver. Just drop a bolt down with a nut and move it to the back of the house. I like it so much. That i took the front leg off and made a short tongue for it. Welded that on half up the leg to make it more even when moving.. WOW THAT MADE IT SO NICE TO MOVE AROUND
I would extend that pipe down so if lets that water fall in to a short barrel and put a few holes in the bottom of the barrel so the water comes out slower and direct it to the little pond area not to erode the soil in that area god bless
Jimplease don't give up you always come out doing a great job ok Jess omg what a amazing job on your home door and girl you did a wonderful job outside way to go Jiménez and Jess Rosa
I have the same RMH book as you. I got the kind of barrels that have multiple ridges around the barrel. I cut one barrel on one of those ridges, and hammered it into a flange for the top barrel to sit on
We here in Alberta Canada think you be able to get it to work for you Jim and Jessica are good to get things working and do the right things to make work that way
Check out Walker Stoves. He sells plans for a Batch Box Rocket Mass Heater that I believe is superior to the old J tube style & will eventually replace that design as more people learn about them. I know you're committed to this project, but keep it in mind in case things change in the future. They're DIY friendly, the plans are very affordable & I was able to locate the ceramic fiberboard (the only real expense) in my nearest big city. Keep on keepin' on... best of luck on your continued progress!
17:40 The bags are for holding the earth as you build. The earth is what is holding it all up, not the bags. As long as you get it all sealed up with cob, the earth will hold.
Okay , I just have to ask you Jim, have you considered using a wood cook-stove for heat? I'm thinking that you would take up a whole lot less floor-space and you could use the stove for so many more things as well. In New Mexico, many of our grandparents (I'm in my 60's) and even some friends and family were still using these stoves up until 30 years ago . I wouldn't be surprised if many people in Northern NM still use them. All you would need is the hole for venting and the pipe which you already have. I think you are going to use wood for your rocket mass heater, so there would be no difference there as well. Now that you have a pause in the work maybe you should look for one? Just for fun. The stoves are so beautiful and Jess could find one in the teal blue color to match her door. You might be able to find one in a thrift store and maybe even make a trade. Those stoves are great for making stews, beans, bread, and tortillas. Please think about it. I think Jess would really like one and it would save so much space in your dome. Also a lot less physical work on you other than hauling the stove. I hope that you at least read this. Thanks for your time. P.s. the walls are looking great and so is your drainage system.
I just looked on craigslist Albuquerque and wood cook stoves range from 500 - 5000. I sure wouldn't pay more than 500. The 500.00 one looks as good or better than the expensive ones. Some people are ridiculous. Ha
What would be Jim & Jessica's wood source? They would have to import wood yearly. Would a rocket stove use less wood for the amount of heat given off? I guess it depends on the design as to how much heat could be trapped for before exiting.
You guys appear to have your mojo back, over the pains and aches and odd and cold weather and now you’re back to the steadfast and hardworking couple that I’ve come to know and care about. I absolutely admire your loyalty to your vision.
Jess great job on the riverbed! The small gravel will also prevent your river bed from getting plugged up from leaves and debris. Were you planting sprouted fully grown onions? What will they do? Sorry about your set back with the mass heater. I'm looking into a rocket stove to do outdoor canning this summer.
Awesome trench Jess. Not sure about manure on the inside walls. Doesn't it stink? We use to have metal barrel to burn trash in Michigan they didn't last.
Looks good Jess! And Jim that sucks it didn't work but at least now u know? I see a lot of people using straw in their mix. My question is, does it not rot and break down?
You may have some luck finding the barrels you need at a cabinet shop or oil change business. Companies that buy finishes or oils in bulk usually deal with barrels that are none returnable. Try googling a town close to you for these type of companies and give them a call, maybe you will get lucky
Check out the Honey Do Carpenter's Rocket Mass Heater. He has figured it out for sure and it looks nothing like the others that I have seen put together. Smaller too. He has instructional videos and is coming out with a book. Check it out.
Another thing they don’t mention very well in the book is the output duct from the barrel needs to be higher than your burn tube, or you’ll get no draw. And… When you place your pipes, orient them with the seam up. Tape all the seams and all the joints in your Ts and 90s with aluminum tape. I found out the hard way the smoke WILL come out the seams.
I know it doesn't help, But the book I used is by the inventor of the mass heater, Ianto Evans. Its called Rocket Mass Heaters, Superefficent Woodstoves you can build (and snuggle up to). Its from Cob Cottage Publications.

I would get a small US Cast Iron wood stove. That would be plenty for that place! But that is me I got a Large Us Cast Iron wood stove out in the garage I DEARLY LOVE IT., I just pull out the Ash tray a little bit and it makes it a ROCKET STOVE! Course your not going to get them at the price i got mine years ago. 75 dollars. 😉👍 There now like up to 250 dollars up to 500 dollars Even tho there made in China. THERE WORTH EVERY PENNY! You will get many many years out of it. Plus You can cook on it. Its got 2 plate top to cook on. If you crack a leg or need a seal for it. YOU CAN GET REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR IT
These are your practice barrels,. They are some useful-sort of Saturnian templates, I hope. I.e., may we all learn something useful from imperfection (life).
It's refreshing to watch you two, because you don't edit out things that don't work according to the plan, you allow yourselves to be vulnerable to the rest of the world and that right there is one of the reasons I love to watch your channel. You have way more patience than me. I do enjoy seeing how your both working on the dream.
Great job, Jessica, on the gravel trench.
You take your time to do it well and skillfully.
May all your projects turn out perfectly.
You are quite the artist.
Not a failure... it's a learning experience and maybe try the ones you cut up as an outdoor firepit ... love the progress
Great idea
Another thing I don't recall reading in the books - If you don't know what was in the barrel, one should rinse it out prior to cutting.
If there was flammable liquid inside, it could be potentially dangerous cutting into the barrel.
My little homestead did a couple rocket heaters. You may want to talk to them. I have a feeling Gary could help you. ❤

Jim, take a look at Mountain Dream Home # 29, 30, & 30. He built a rocket mass heater so you can get a lot of information from it.
I think you are right about your barrels! ........ but if they taper you could just invert one and they will slide over each other?

It's a drainage ditch not a art project you gingerly place rock. The slope does the real work.
Hey, Jess! Love the rock bed drainage ditch! You probably want a couple of big rocks for the downspout to hit first, other wise it will get totally rutted out.

The new mix looks like it will work alot better. Great work Jess xxx
Hello my dears, wishing good luck in everything. May God continue blessing you.❤
New cob mix looks better! Nice job on the barrel cutting too.
The only loss is an in evaluated loss. You learn from experience it’s not a loss. Good job!

Cob isn't that complicated. Just soil, water, and straw. It holds pretty nicely
What a beautiful door wow
That door is gorgeous Jess
You guys it's really looking good love that door Jess , that mud was good looking mix Jim!
Awesome work so far.. On the subject of the mudding, have you considered using chicken wire and shot crete?
Boy do I love this video - great job
Marty Albuquerque

Hahaha, the doggie foot print on the glass door Jess is working on. she's got artistic help, whether she asked for it or not

I think the small rocks will also help prevent the drainage from filling back in with dirt. Looks good!
When that step cut barrel fit perfectly over the bricks... that was sweeeeeeet.
Jess made a French drain. Works wonders for draining land
Having confidence with new barrels will make a big difference.
😊HAPPY TO SEE COB ON THE INSIDE, TY YOU PETER FOR THE HELP🥰YUNZ LOOK MUCH HAPPIER 🤗STAY BLESSED BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE 😘
plant as many trees as you could too! Nice build!!! Keep going!
When barrel shopping use a cloth tape to compare circumference and divide it by pi for diameter, the barrels you have now can be a reference too.
Great job on the dry rock bed! So glad to see y’all getting the inside going!
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys.
An extra hand is a great help Peter!
I loved the shield graphics. Very clever.
I'm a huge fan of inspector crewso.😅
The riverbed looks beautiful
Nice downspout splash box!

Jess your door design is beautiful
Every day, a little more progress. I hope you get the heater done and the dome sealed soon. When do the rains start again?
Learning experience with barrels.
17:40 The bags are for holding the earth as you build. The earth is what is holding it all up, not the bags. As long as you get it all sealed up with cob, the earth will hold.
You are correct
Do you think that in the inside of the dome, chicken wire might help with the cob? Since its inclined and I'm a little bit OCD... 😁

great job y'all
Good way to look at it Jim. You did a test run on the barrels. Good luck man.
Definitely are a lot of variations can't wait to see how it comes together.
Cracking is often from too much clay. I'd try adding a little extra sand, or what ever aggregate your using.
Looks good I would look into auto repair shops for barrels but you can get empty from Grainger or MSC that’s where I bout them for work.
Love y'all soooooo much!!! Proud of your SPIZZERINCTUM!!!
ty..xoxo 🥰🖐👍🤟✌🤪
Awesome trench Jess. Not sure about manure on the inside walls. Doesn't it stink? We use to have metal barrel to burn trash in Michigan they didn't last.
My Little homestead built rocket mass heaters, aren’t they in your neck of the woods, maybe checking with them could help y’all out.
Great video as always, hey Jim are you native American ,hope that's not to personal
Jim, once you've finished the dome, you could write a book!
Check out the Honey Do Carpenter's Rocket Mass Heater. He has figured it out for sure and it looks nothing like the others that I have seen put together. Smaller too. He has instructional videos and is coming out with a book. Check it out.
Why not use the same mix that Jess used on the roof of the dome? It's held up well☺️
The outside cob has held up well. The inside one needs to be done a bit differently
Another thing they don’t mention very well in the book is the output duct from the barrel needs to be higher than your burn tube, or you’ll get no draw.
And…
When you place your pipes, orient them with the seam up. Tape all the seams and all the joints in your Ts and 90s with aluminum tape. I found out the hard way the smoke WILL come out the seams.
Trial and error is the road to success
Have you checks restaurants for barrels.
My Little Homestead has videos for rocket stove heaters.
That flooding basin will become a frog pond eventually (fingers crossed)
I know it doesn't help, But the book I used is by the inventor of the mass heater, Ianto Evans. Its called Rocket Mass Heaters, Superefficent Woodstoves you can build (and snuggle up to). Its from Cob Cottage Publications.
inspector crewsoe approves of this french drain.....hey how does that ryobi grinder work? is it worth the 80 bucks or so it costs?
Good Morning.... Slowly but Surely
You had a look of pure joy when your brother arrived. It reminded me of when Jesus said he looks for his lost sheep and has joy when he finds them. Knowing Jesus brings me perfect peace and joy. Praying for y’all. God bless you.
This may sound odd, but how old is your horse manure? I'd once heard from someone who ran local horse stables that the manure would have to cool down for 3 years to be used as fertilizer. Does that apply for use in the capacity as you are using it in as well? Did see a couple guys some time ago doing a build with nothing but horse manure & straw but haven't been able to find it again on youtube - always wondered how it turned out & held up.
what was wrong with the old mix you should know if it's not broken don't fix it, and I'll tell you I have heard more bad than good about that rocket stove thing you have to be real careful of the exhaust the carbendioxide poisioning I would noy trust one even if I built it, don't want to see anything happen to you guys you are only one of 3 video spots I follow so that means we like you guys be safe god bless Joshua from the eastern shore of Maryland
We learn from our mistakes but that shouldn't stop us from keeping on with our thing.
What are planting Jess please
🎉you too happy good easter and good Jobb good bleasing too you
Once the rocket stove is fired up the plaster on the inside will dry much faster! 😊
Maybe its cracking because the mixture is drying to quick? Have to keep it moist for a.while perhaps...by wetting it down with a damp sponge.
It needed more fibrous materials. It's doing better now.
❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊 have a great day you guys
I would get a small US Cast Iron wood stove. That would be plenty for that place!
