We're going to need that rocket mass heater sooner rather than later. 😬
If you haven't seen the beginning of that build you can see it here.

Any way you can feed air from your radon vents to feed combustion air into the rocket heater? it would prevent your house from sucking cold air draft while burning, and allow the chimney to draft out smoke better.

You might be able to speed up the house project if you get some spray on hemp Crete to finish the walls and insulation on the inside of the house. It just sprays on and it's still all natural and fits in with the eco all natural theme of your house. Also maybe adding a sand battery feature to your rocket heater would be a nice add on and doubles as insulation in areas were it might be needed. Just a thought. It would definitely help make quick work of things that's for sure.

Well you got the emergency repair done!
Now is not the time to relax though ..... those pipes do not melt like that for no reason.
If it got hot enoughto melt the pipes you should be worried about what else is getting hot that shouldn;t! At a bare minimum you need to clean all the sawdust out of there, maybe look at throwing some Rockwool down? That would have the added bonus of keeping the Camper a bit more toasty too! ;0)

The best thing we did was invest in some RV skirting. I don't think it's normally as cold where we are building compared to you. Even still! You might find that it makes your RV living situation a bit better as you are building. Nothing fancy, but vinyl or foam boards will definitely help with the plumbing against the cold and the critters!

What was the reason for the melting pipe? the pipes they are laying on, its is my guess that there should be some kind of insulation between the two pipes or it will happen again. and not to mention the melting pipe could make you feel ill. BE CARFUL!

    • @jillelaine770

YES! It looks like the piece of split loom (plastic with slit down one side) that was covering the hot copper pipe below the repair had come loose, which allowed the grey pipes above to melt. Recover the copper pipe with some of that split loom below the repaired pipes...AND I would create some kind of support for the repaired pipes (chicken wire sling?) to prevent the repaired pipes from sagging down into the hot copper pipe. It all might look fine when the pipes are all cold, but once they heat up, the plastic will sag.

Melted water pipes ... did you figure out why they melted? That's pretty weird and sounds kind of dangerous. Like when my trailer's water heater almost caught on fire. The first warning besides a little smell was when the cold water got hot. You really have to keep alert in those trailers.

I replaced all the poly pipe in my RV with Pex. Just wondering if you figured out what caused the piping to melt? As I tell people wanting to live off grid you have to have backups to your backups and backups to them!
Being in Arizona I try to keep two or three cooling options and heat options handy in case something goes wrong. Easier to deal with the cold though then the extreme heat from a personal safety perspective. More things will fail in the cold though.

What would cause your heater to melt your water pipes like that? Too close to the heater, perhaps? Didn’t look like it had been modified, a factory defect perhaps? Scary stuff…… Some people don’t like burning wood, but it would keep ya’ll warm in an emergency. Small wood stove can be fabricated by a welder if cost was a factor. Stay safe from Gila County AZ!!!!

Thank you for your videos. You are both an inspiration. I am tackling a project on my land in the Mojave where I am building a small day cabin and some shade structures as well as a small stage of all things. I am using all recycled building materials. I am trying to make everything solid and rustic, eventually full of artistic touches. I am doing a lot of stone work but do what I can as materials become available. But it is a bit of a crazy labor of love that someday may amount to something nice. Best wishes to you both and keep up the great work in everything you are doing. Once again I hope you know what an inspiration you are. Thanks again. Jeff in Southern CA

I wonder if y'all got the same virus that Ken and I got. We tested negative for flu and the 'vid but good NIGHT it was rough! I'm finally coming out of it, after about literally 3 weeks of sick. And I hope Don sees this and is able to tell us what the name of that bird is! Man, I hate that the pipes did that but I'm glad that the damage was what it was, and that nothing caught fire or whatever. Looking forward to seeing more of the RMH! Seeing the propane tank made me curious though, are y'all going to add a larger permanent propane tank for cooking and maybe a fridge? You're planning on adding a kitchen in the second dome, right? I so want an outdoor kitchen here.
