I wish the cost here in SC was the same as yours. Our conference said they would give us the separation info no later than October 31 2022 but didn’t release the terms till December 24 2022 and had the vote with a 30 day information to be completed by march 1 st and the rest had to be completed by may 31 2023

Ric, I always wonder how much of this is a lack of competence vs how much is malevolence. Conference staff are bureaucrats so they are used to doing the same thing year after year after year and focusing on their own needs. This is something new and is focusing on the needs of the church. Hmmm....

I attend two different United Methodist churches (long story) but the small one our fee to disafilliate was $68k in the NC conference and the other one a much larger church we would have to pay in Virginia $227k. However, neither church is going to disafilliate at least the smaller one until after the general conference in 2024, but the larger church in Virginia isn't disafilliating at all.

Tough decisions. I have little faith that General Conference 2024 will approve and easier, cheaper path to leaving, but I've been wrong before.

Your presentation is more about why a church should leave the UMC and go Global. You did not mention the one reason that a church is permitted to leave under paragraph 2553, which is being in disagreement with the human sexuality issue. That should be the first thing spoken about, not trust clause or money. How many congregants even knew about a trust clause before this came up? Now it has become the main issue. The decision should should not be made on money. Everything about the future of both the UMC and GMC are purely assumptions.

Thanks for watching, Jill. I agree that Para. 2553 forces churches to leave based on human sexuality. In the Dakotas, that is a minor issue. Many church that have left are leaving primarily because they are concerned with the direction bishops are leading the UMC in allowing and sometimes promoting teachings contrary to orthodoxy (e.g., Articles of Religion). The second reason seems to be the Trust Clause and wanting some control over their future.

The UMC follows Jesus and welcomes all. On the other hand, the GMC follows the Book of Discipline.
