Tried to get him into bikes and wrenches but lost him to heroin and the insuring darkness that accompanies the "weasel dust".

Jim, I had Stage 4 Liver Cancer a little over 1 1/2 years ago. I almost died from it, but the unrelenting prayers of friends and a merciful Lord got me through it and today I am Cancer free. Don't give up hope. I will be praying for you!
I pump the brake lever to push the piston out of the caliper before I unhook the brake line. Easier that way. As long as it's not totally stuck. When you have old bikes, it's important to have more than one so you always have a bike to ride.

Hey back in the day (late 80's) i had an old shovelhead and typical of the AMF's needed a lot of work often, i picked up a 650 savage as my back up bike and i LOVED that little bike.

I broke my collar bone 20 years back, it didn't knit and I needed a plate inserted 18 months later... I was told at that point I should have taken VITAMIN D with all the milk I was drinking (for the calcium) I wasn't aware of that. Please give your friend the heads up!? Great episode, frustration and joy, such is life. 👍🏍

Sometimes replacing a bike because the repair and maintenance costs are reaching the value of the bike is not better. At least when you fix the bike, you know that bit is new.

Working on an old bike is filled with frustration but it does appear you are doing all the right things and will have a much better ride when done. Hang in there the end will soon be in sight.
Put a grease nipple in the brake brake fluid connection and use a grease gun with same to push the pistons out.

While too small for me with my 35' inseam, I like the Savage. I haven't really found a bike I don't like although definitely some more than others.

Thankfully Honda likes to use common parts for everything. I'm pretty sure that drain cap is the exact same one that was on my 750 Shadow.
Not only that, it looks a little like the valve access caps to old CB's.
It's cool to see all of work you're doing on the GW even if it ends up being a pain in the butt for you; it's good content to watch.
The first time takin rear wheel off my old"wing"the very same spacer fucked me up
feeling like getting rid of something cause its a p.i.t.a. is my life, but then when you get that baby fixed you know it's good to go and don't have to deal with buying another bike with problems. I've made that mistake 100 times it feels like, but you're smart to step away when it gets frustrating. thats when shit usually goes wrong
My X and I did a 800 mile vacation on a kawasaki 454 Ltd and loved it!
Instead of using an air hose, you can leave the lines connected to the caliper and use the brake levers to push the pistons out.
that is how I did mine last year, easy peasy....

Try riding in August in Arizona, during monsoon season… probably very similar to Florida but we get 110 degree heat and it’s GROSS!!!
If you're riding to Winnipeg you should detour at Madison and take I-90 to Winona MN there's tons of great riding in the surrounding counties. The driftless zone has the best riding in the midwest.

We have been all over the US on our bike with never a problem road to California last year and was hit the first day there.
Years ago I read an article in Motorcyclist magazine(I think) about a guy that rode a Rebel 250 from Florida to Nevada.
Other than being tossed around by the wind, he didn't have any problems.

When I rebuilt my first set of bike calipers I had to replace a piston. I wish I could say the Piston was just worn but no I shot it into the air removing it from the caliper and it bounced on the floor and got scarred up.
This video is the exact reason why I drop my bike off to a Honda dealership garage and pick it up all fixed. I win every time.

Bro my dad bought a savage new in 86 and rode it as far north as possible to the upper peninsula all the way south to the keys. Hes been all over on his savage. He sold it years ago but them savages are great bikes.

Josh, my dad was a life long mechanic and he had a shop cart with a window AC unit on it with adjustable ducting so he could have AC blowing on him no mater where he was working on a vehicle. You're welcome. ;)
Definitely take a trip on the savage. Doesnt have to be out of state, just across state. Like SR through Brandon, polk county then out to the easy coast. Just bring extra gas after Lake Wales.

I bought the gloves recommended by the "bearded guy", because of the Kevlar protection and serious abrasion test he did. However, they are the most awkward wearing gloves...ever. On the other hand(!), I bought a pair of Odin Street MX gloves as recommended by STS, and could not be happier. Break in period, was a quick ride to the beach, and the split fingers make it so easy to hit buttons, swipe the phone, ventilate, and quickly dry out sweaty palms. Soft leather, cool graphics, perfect fit. What the hell else do you want?

If you want to get frustrated working on a Wing, put all the bolts, nuts and washers you remove, neatly, onto a plastic tray. Then, when you're feeling accomplished, step on the corner of the tray. Added bonus, neighbours learn some new words.
My last 2 couches came from that same dump down there lol. I have kids and pets. I ain't tryna spend real money. Also I literally ordered seals for my calipers last night. Another reason to put a stopper like a brake pad, etc, is so one piston doesn't come all the way out leaving you stranded for the 2nd one for air pressure.

Just traded an 87 LS650 in for a 16 dyna. It was clapped out and the dealership gave me 1500..... pretty sure I came out on top considering the savage kept dying on the way to the dealership.

While maybe there wasn't much you could complete at this time due to parts not available BUT... you identified problems and started to work on....so I think that's a win by itself....just getting started is a good thing. Sorry to hear about your friends but as you said they're alive.

Hope they get well and bikes sorted soon. As for Chey's Tupperware Torpedo it should be possible to get a shorter shock for it.. Don't know who in US but here in the UK Hagon can make shocks to your spec just tell em the measurements, weight of rider and riding style and they'll do the rest. Won't be cheap though. In the mean time how about removing some foam from the seat.

come on Josh, what you can't buy, you can have Made !! if you need a lower seat, go to an Auto Upholstery shop or a custom motorcycle shop and have a seat made..........my suggestion find a 2nd seat from a crashed or just retired bike so you still have the stock seat to fall back on, and take the 2nd so that they have a stock seat pan to work with, and have one MADE !!

LOL my Honda helix has that same oil filter cap and I also broke mine in the exact same way. Lucky for me I had a cheap Chinese scooter that I drained of oil and stole the cap off that...

They are garbage stock and can blow up after like 10-15k.
There's multiple ways to fix em.

I feel your frustration. my bike has been in limp mode for a month now. Harley has single handedly destroyed my trip around the U.S. I did the deep south up thought the Carolinas and home for tiers and oil changes. two days later my ecm went out. now I could have bought on on ebay or my dealer could have checked other shops to see if they had one and I learned today there were many out there. but that's not something you can plug and play, you need Harleys software to pin it to your bike and Harley can't f$%kin get the parts. this should be illegal. they have monopolized service and then can't perform it. I've been ridding harleys for 45 ish years and will never buy another. I've had three massive heart attacks and with this pandemic this could have been my last chance to make that big of a ride and Harley f$%ked me and there is nothing I can do about it. I almost don't want road king Kong any more. but if I win haha.....
This could be a longshot for Chey, but I would bet that if you are still solid with the Ride Factory, see if they have access to lowering blocks for something like a Honda cruiser. If I remember right there are people that make kits to move the shock back an inch or so and lowers the rear. At worst you might be able to tweak a set to make it work.
Barring that you might be able to find shorter shocks that could fit on the PC800 without too much hassle. I know they use a special set from the factory, but it doesn't mean you can't get something aftermarket that will do the same job even if they aren't a perfect replica.
