    Thumbs up for Devin responding to nearly every single comment. Even the know it all trolls who, despite having no experience and no film business, feel like they should tell him how to run his unbelievably successful business. Rock on Devin! Much success to you! We've all been blessed by your talent and trend setting "silly" you tube videos :)

      Awww shucks! Even though the TH-cam community is the most vicious we still love being apart of it. The negative comments destroy me sadly :/ Just one comment can totally take over my day. But these comments are the ones that remind me why I do what we do, because of the incredible people that do believe in us. I don't have it all figured out. I'm trying my best to learn and grow as fast as I can, and knowing I have people supporting us in this process makes it all worth it. Thank you my friend for watching our backs, especially on the "silly" youtube videos ;)

      Ignore the haters Devin, you are living proof that they are wrong...I find your success and your work inspiring as do millions of other people. Look at what you've accomplished in your career thus far and the skills and experience you've gained. There are only bigger and better things from here. Thank you for sharing the ride with us.

      The people who leave negative comments are just lazy bums who have to much time on their hands. But people who leave positive, but constructive comments, are people that know how much you put into these videos and how much you've put into your company, and want to help you grow!

      Devin, it would be awesome to see what projects you use these on and what you use your new Sigma lenses on. Maybe you could leave it in the comment section if you don’t put it in the actual content/video.
      I love learning from you. Thanks for sharing your natural talents and well earned/learned and researched information with all of us. ✌️

      Lenses are a great investment. You can charge for them, and they are stable in price for reselling. If you have a lot of project, lenses can pay off pretty quickly...

    Reasons why this is smart:
    1) These lenses are very expensive. If you shoot a lot, it's better to just buy them.
    2) Cinema lenses usually dont lose value over time like cameras and other stuff. Some get ever more expensive as they age (like Lomo). They will probably own these lenses for decades.
    3) He's a gearhead. Every filmmaker is. Some people make money by doing what they dont like to spend it on stuff they want to do (expensive cars or what not). Filmmakers spend money on gear because they want to.

    I’m laughing my butt off of the haters who’re trying to justify why you should not have purchased these lenses. Just so you know Team Supertramp doesn’t do only TH-cam videos. Most of the stuff that gets put on TH-cam are either for fun or just their creative outputs. Of course their not gonna post every single thing they do with other clients. I’d love to be able to be a part of a production crew like yours Devin. But a kid can only dream.

  • @randyandanna
    @randyandanna 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There are TH-camrs buying expensive things that do not further their career at all, and then there's the few (like you guys) who are investing in their business, looking years ahead and seeing all the amazing opportunities (even beyond TH-cam) that come from such investments, and yet there are so many who do not understand and are flaming you guys. TH-cam is a business (a business based around community and video), and you have to make smart business decisions to stay afloat in it and move ahead. Those lenses are awesome, Devin! Great job guys!

    We used these as the main lenses for Netflix's Lost in Space with blue streak filters to make them look like anamorphics. Also on the Revenant using the Alexa 65 the widest lens was a 28mm rehoused Hasselblad which is similar to a 17mm FF lens while the widest s35 lens was a 12mm Master Prime to be used with the XT and M.

    This, is one hell of a great business move. Personally my dream lenses are the Fujinon MK lenses (18-55 and 55-135 zooms), because I do cinematography and documentary/broadcast work. Those are the lenses Philip Bloom uses... nuff said! Parfocal, no breathing, T 2.9 throughout the range, seamless iris, 200 degrees focus throw (so you can pull by hand for broadcast) AND finally... macro mode! :O Like yeah they're expensive for me (5K-8K), but hell, those can replace most of my actual lenses - if not all my still lenses. Lenses are a great investment.

    • @edbrotherton36
      @edbrotherton36 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the 55-135 you're referring to is actually a 50-135. They are nice lenses I purchased them recently for our Jailbirds Show.

  • @NewsMoto
    @NewsMoto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    @devingraham Correct me if I'm wrong. Isn't the Revenant shot on the Alexa 65? The Summilux - C are only Super35. BTW i have shot on these lenses on an Alexa Mini for a TV car ad. Very light and super sharp!

    • @bikenejad
      @bikenejad 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Only some parts of The Revenant were shot on Alexa 65. Most of the film was shot on the Alexa XT and the Alexa M using master primes and summilux-c's. Chivo likes to have the lightest camera possible for handheld, so he used a very stripped down alexa m with a 16mm summilux and the "head" of the camera linked by cable to the camera "body" in a backpack worn by a grip.

    Why not Zeiss Master Prime?

    • @devingraham
      @devingraham  6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      When I've rented master prime lenses in the past, I actually thought they looked "to sharp" and to "video-e". Zeiss's were a contender in this as well, but after personally shooting with Leica lenses, those are the ones I fell in love with.

    • @yudela1
      @yudela1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      devingraham I respect your decision, but I don't see how they seem too video-ey for you (although I see where you come from in regards to their sharpness). Blade Runner 2049 was shot on Zeiss Master Primes (without filters, as Roger Deakins does not use filters) and it was one of the most cinematic experiences of the decade.

    • @AmusementForce
      @AmusementForce 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most of the movies are shot on Zeiss Master Primes. Zeiss is the best in making lenses with literally no distortion. The Zeiss Master Prime lenses even the 12mm have no distortion. The movie Gravity was shot on wide angle Zeiss Master Primes and you can see there is literally no distortion. I just love that.

    • @kane01337
      @kane01337 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      'video-e' lol...maybe that's the RED ? They Sure looked good in Roger Deakins last few films ^__^ still gotta go with your own vision... ps aren't summilux-C designed for S35 ? Won't Vistavision Sensor cause vignette on your 16mm ? or are you only shooting S35 with them?

    Are these directors using full frame or like super 35, etc?
    I think you could be creative with something tighter than a 75. Like some Tele character shots for highly compressed separation. Get that claustrophobic lost feeling.

    • @TheJudge064
      @TheJudge064 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      75 should be pretty tight on a s35 lens no?

  • @avdcam
    @avdcam 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Damn, well done man, the Leica's have an incredible look and feel, honestly congrats. Curious on the Leica Thalia aperture / t-stop comparison. Considering the Summilux are T1.4, the equivalent look on a full frame sensor would be about a T2.0 with full frame coverage. It's true that the summilux are little brighter, but when it comes to the depth of field look, they would only differ slightly. That being said, if you are shooting mostly S35 sensor size, there is less need to have full frame coverage and the added weight when you are using less glass for sure. Can't wait to see how they look!

  • @tomwebb10
    @tomwebb10 ปีที่แล้ว

    This video was 4 years old so it probably won't be answered but what are you trying to get the same lenses as what the directors use? Wouldn't you be more interested in what lenses the cinematographers used? For example the cinematographer of Birman, The Revenant is Emmanuel Lubezki who also shot Children of Men.

      I just responded to this question in another comment. But I'll go more in depth again here. Maybe I'll even do a video on it. Sigma's are meant for a full frame camera. Leica Summilux are meant for a Super 35mm camera. They both have a different "look" and quality to them that is different. Will be going more in depth on this in other videos :) The Sigma's will be used for more of the extreme videos due to how much cheaper they are, while the Leica's will be used on the more narrative type videos. And it allows when our team splits up into two groups, to both have lenses to pull off the project.

Those lenses are somewhere around one tenth the price of each of these lenses. In fact, you pretty much chose the most expensive stuff that is available, and I'm just wondering why. I know you have great reasons for doing so, I'd just like to learn them.

      That can't be answered because it depends on the script. But if you were take your average made for TV movie you're looking at million dollar budget. If you consider just the time as the only information there is to work with, the I would say 275,000 to $425,000

    Ultra wide lenses lenses have unavoidable perspective distortion which can't be corrected optically with common lenses (tilt shift lenses are another story). The geometric distortion, usually barrel one can be corrected optically.
    Until 24mm full frame lenses, the perspective distortion is not serious and doesn't bother amateurs photographers.
    Below 21mm full frame lenses, the perspective distortion is becoming serious. So by many photographers and videographers 21mm is the limit for shooting with serious restrictions.

    My assumption is, these lenses are for your narrative work to come. Not sure if you have discussed this but are these narratives in-house generated or the narrative work mostly contract work. I suppose a follow-up is are these narrative stories youtube content or film/big screen stuff. I think you briefly said you guys are making a transition but that leaves a lot to interpret based on company perspective and viewer. Just curious, and thanks for the reply.

    Hey Dev, i remembered you showing your short film years ago, from College. Well, that made me gain my insights of filmmaking better. After attending school, I fell short of watching you because of the style that you change, which is all in your preference and style as a director. But I see that you are going back to your short films and hopefully you do. I finished school also and started to do all my short films as well and Cannot wait to see what you have for us viewers. Keep up it man. Hopefully I come across you when your in LA or in SF. Good luck to the future you have as every filmmaker is going after their dreams as I am going for my short films and feature films of scripts.

  • @CoreyWilson

    So why did you guys buy those sigma cine lenses last month?

    • @devingraham
      @devingraham  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    They did not use summilux lenses on revenant. Chivo shoots with arri master primes, especially the 12mm t1.3 was used a lot to great effect. Anyways, these lenses are damn beautiful, and i love the steps you are taking into bigger production value. On youtube the main audience may not understand the value in these lenses, but this is a dream come true for any cinematographer. Looking forward to checking out videos shot with these and i hope you will put them on vimeo too 🤝

    • @devingraham
      @devingraham  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I made sure my facts were straight before we did this video :) According to the DP of Revenant, Emmanuel Lubezki, he said this, "The production shot with Master Primes, mainly 12, 14 and 18mm, and also with the Leica Summilux 14, 16 and 18mms, as they are much lighter for handheld." So there you have it, you can read the full interview with the DP on American Cinematographer where he goes into even more detail with the Summilux lenses and why they used them on a bunch of the scenes :)

    • @asdfghjuyteqwe
      @asdfghjuyteqwe 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome man! I love chivo and have studied his work, i never heard this. Makes a lot of sense tho. But the master primes were definitely his main lenses as they usually are. Actually weird they switch between lenses on such a production, but i guess the harshness of the location called for lighter lenses. Which again is also a plus for your kind of production so this is a nice choice for you, but i bet you already know that, investing in such things calls for endless research. Congrats on the lenses again, gonna be even more interesting following your journey now that you guys are taking steps into a more professional and cinematic productions.
      Cheers mate

    The one thing I seem to have noticed with your channel is you are now not doing more run and gun shooting you are shooting really big shoots that have a high production value. I miss the small shoots that told more of a story I feel you guys have gotten caught up over gear and forgotten about the shooting. You guys are/were know for shooting stuff just from a glidecam pretty much solo but now you have 10+ people on a shoot.

  • @jingtianwang9793
    @jingtianwang9793 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting lens choice, for the same money, I would go for Arri Master Prime or even Master anamorphic, those are way faster and are way stronger and are way easier to rent out. Also, I don’t get why people got to director for lens choice, normally it’s the dp who choose the lens and they are way more experienced at this. But congrats on the lens preaches, and you do by chance rent these out?

  • @AndreiSam

    Devin, thank you for the video! Very inspiring and educational! When you say that famous directors used 21mm lens, does that mean that it was actually around 35mm since there's a crop factor in super 35mm film/sensor cameras?

  • @TheScrubsfanforever

    While you were researching what the favorite focal lengths of you favorite cinematographers are, did you take into account, that all these movies were shot on film, so they are all anamorph. That does not change the focal length, but the field of view and the amount of bokeh, compared to non anamorphic lenses.

    • @devingraham
      @devingraham  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure all that was taken in. HOWEVER, a lot of the videos I researched was shot on digital cameras as well. But looked at every element, and why other DP's were doing what they were doing, played a massive role in it all.

    I would of only use 29 mm and 40mm because those are the best focal lengths for filmmaking because 27-29 is the right amount of wideness you want. ANd 40mm is a focal length you could shoot an entire movie on and be perfectly fine. But I wouldn't shoot at 21 mm because it's too wide, but other people should if they want to get the focal length of somebody's eye which is 22 - 24 mm not 35- 50mm.

    Devin, first, thanks for sharing. Fantastic info and love your attitude of straight to the point and honest sharing. Having said that and knowing you're coming from a similar place as most current Indies, what would you say, for an indie, is the advantage of the Leicas vs the other manufacturers, and what an indie might gain by either going canon, sigma, toking, Leica or Zeiss? You talked about contrast and variations in sharpness throughout the frame, but would like for you to share your personal feeling toward the lenses brands and characteristics. I understand there's probably some sponsorship or "don't want to upset a manufacturer" approach, but would like to hear from you what do you think of the lenses you've used so far, different attributes not much on a resolution chart sort of way, but as an indie who wants to achieve the best images he can and his signature look.
