    Kind of missed the point explaining the difference between T-Stops and F-Stops. F-Stops is the theoretical amount of light that will go through the lens based on the diameter and focal length. T-Stops is the actual amount of light that makes it through. Simply put, f-stops is the the measurement of light hitting the front of the lens and t-stops is how much actually makes it through

      Agree! but they did write it correctly on the screen, when he first gave his vague explanation, that the F-stop is the focal length divided by the diameter of the entrance pupil. Then he kept on vaguely explaining it.

      But unfortunatly you are allmost right but really not. The f-stop doesnt have to do anything with light. You could have a lens at f1.2 using shit instead glas optics...no light transmission at all. Good glass and the possibility of a high f-stop results in a high Tstop.
      Though a Tstop is not an exact way to calculate depth of field. The fstop is...which is kind of confusing and makes only minor difference.

      So, I get the definition difference, but what do f an t stops look like in practice? Or is it just a different measurement? If so, are methods using the two the same or different?

    f stops are not estimated, they measure the aperture width in proportion to the focal length.

      Yes but f stops is the amount of light that passes through the aperture, T stops is the amount of light that actually exits the lens and hits the sensor.

      F-stop is measured by the size of the opening at the front of the lens. A t-stop is a little trickier to measure since it is how much light, having passed through the aperture and through the elements in the lens, actually gets to your sensor. You do lose some light along the way.

    I am pretty sure that T-Stop is the amount of light that is transmitted to the sensor while F-Stop is more of the light that is let in through the lens, but you have to remember that the lenses are circular while the sensor is a rectangle so you lose light there. So then a T-Stop only calculates the light that actually hits the rectangle, pretty sure you can find the T-Stop of lenses for different sensors on DxOMark.

    T-stop is a the measure of light transmission, but F-stop is a the measure of depth-of-focus. Which is more important? As far as T-stop goes, the better solution is to have plenty of dynamic range and bit-depth to capture all information available and can make whatever decisions you wish during editing/post-production.

    Sigma is a great alternative if the main lenses is missed up, can't wait for the new scenes with these new lenses.

    Yessss I have been waiting for you guys to take this new direction for a while! I filmed a church commercial last year with the Sigma Art lenses (yes obviously not as great as the Cinema) but even they were legit let me tell ya! Would love to work with you guys some day, Devin :D

      Actually the art lens have the exact same optics and look as the cine lenses! The only difference is the cine lenses are all manual and have the fancy housing.

    I actually use a 16mm t2.2 lens for my Panasonic G7, and it’s absolutely beautiful! I will say though, a 80mm lens on a full frame camera is GODLY BEAUTIFUL!!! Can’t wait to see what comes out of these bad boys! 🤙🏽🤙🏽

    Dual Pixel Autofocus- I was able to track a tennis ball, at 50 mm 1.2 across the frame with two players. With narrative even easier. That said nice lenses, yet I think my 35 L 1.4 ii is just as sharp ;) probably close with my 16, 24 L ii, 50 L 1.2, 100L 2.8, etc

    So why did you go with the Leicas over Cooke's? As pristine and sharp as they are... that Cooke look is sure hard to beat

      I went back and forth with the Cooke S4's and the Leica Summilux, it was a super hard decision actually. I used the S4 on our Extinct music video and loved them, however I feel for the most consist look from project to project, it made the most sense to go with the Leica's. Shoots like Beauty and the Beast, Stranger Things, and Justice League used them for how well they handled different colors, how they "felt", weren't to sharp, but sharp enough. But the S4's I love the 3D look to them. Leica's I feel are the main standard right now as well so there would be a higher chance to rent them out :)

      Leica and cooke are two very very good brand for lenses, and at this point point, i think it's more the look that you look over the quality

      devingraham to each his own. I’ve always preferred character out of my glass more then what “everyone else is shooting with” which seems to be one of the main reasons why you chose it. One of the reasons why I own a RED Weapon over an Alexa-I don’t want to be like the masses (and IPP2 rocks). Just like I’d take my cinevised/rehoused Leica Rs or Super Speeds over newer glass like the Summilux or Master Primes.
      Since your going VV, the Leica Thalia’s sure would be an awesome choice!

    i bought a camera just for take some shots and to have fun with my friends making videos, i am from roumania so all i can boughted was an 700d and some cheap lights with an green screen and a stabilizer, i admire you, i think you filmmakers are the most ingenious ppl.. idk why, but you courage to take this more and more above your own limit is some what i want to do right now, i don't really know from where i can start not quickly but just to make viedeos and take some photos, to do something big.. like you do, gj and i will learn from you. P.S. sorry for my bad english.

    Sigma will have alot of focus breathing. So it is a prime but it zooms a bit with larger focus throws.

    Summilux look great (i'd still rather use Cooke S4s, if we're talking spherical :P)!
    The T-stops also help you matching shots, once they're precise, you can set two different lens to the same amount of light and have two shot with the same exact exposure, something that in photography isn't (99% of the times) an issue.

    don't just buy stuff because people use it in the film industry, understand why they use it. Especially with the lens. They use t-stops because they know if they use mix brands at the same Tstop then will get same amount of light, and each lens exposure stays the same. Also you don't have to use PL mount lens, they only use that because they know it's strong enough to hold heavier/ longer lens. if you want you can use EF, the mounts makes no difference.

    I'm torn between getting the Zeiss CP.3 50MM T2.1 EF mount or the SIGMA FF High Speed 50mm T1.5. I like the fact that the SIGMA is cheaper and faster, but I like the look of the Zeiss a bit more.

    devin i recommend painting the inside of the "locks" in a bright green, so you can more easily tell when the case is open, even when it is dark

    Devin, great videos about your new gear. Congratulations getting into the next chapter of filmmaking with your amazing company.
    One question I’m super curious about. Why did you go for summilux-c instead of summicron-c?? Is it only the higher Tstop??
    I do a lot of Flex4k shoots as an operator and I always choose summicrons above summiluxes. They feel quicker to work with because of their smaller sizes and lower cost. Way nicer on gimbals as well. And somehow I have been getting better detail out of the test charts. Also they coverage is higher as well. I truely love them. And you have the option for this stunning 15mm which is super rectilineaire. But please let me know if you have any more thoughts about that!
    Also those Thalia lenses seem like an intresting option once you fully Vistavision.

      Well I know multiple of them fly. So it is per person. At times they fly separate so they can each carry the max they have. That is what I would do to work and film.

      Also drain them to below 50% (some people say 20%). They are much less dangerous that way.

    Did you look into the sets of Sony CineAlta PL lenses, Zeiss Compact Primes, and the Tokina PL lenses, why did you go for Sigma instead? (I'm guessing Vista Vision coverage was a big factor)

    Thanks for this Devin. I truly appreciate the knowledge! My question is:
    Is it correct to say that an f-stop is a relative or fractional value depending on the size of the aperture compared to the size of the sensor, whereas T-stops are an absolute value of the measure of light transmission? This would explain why a camera phone can claim an f-stop of 1.9 relative to it's tiny sensor

    I really like your videos, you’re really good at what you do and you’re always modest about it. Can’t say the same about other youtubers!
    My question is: what’s a super 35? I know the sensor sizes but not quite sure that the super 35 means. And is it preferred over the 35?

    Why did you guys not get the Leica Thalia lenses, which are meant for the Vista Vision sensor, it would made your VV RED 'A Cam' on important shoots?
