  • Wat Chao Phram วัดเจ้าพราหมณ์ translates to Monastery of the Brahman. Its also spelled as Wat Jao Phram. Its in the southwestern area
    of Ayutthaya's city island.
The temple is located along the Khlong Chakrai Yai, an extension of Khlong Tho.
Wat Jao Phram is part of the Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park, known as “grandmothers park”.
The monasteryis visible from the road next to the Khlong Chakrai Yai but is a bit difficult to get to because of the temple moat. There is a small land bridge on the north side allowing access over the moat thst otherwise completely surrounds the ruin. This does make it difficult to visit so expect to be the only one exploring rhe site.
The prang with redented angles was made of brick anddecorated with stucco, featuring construction work of the Early Ayutthaya period (1351- 1488). It was believed to have origninally been a hindu temple with Buddhist elements added later.
There is also evidence of earlier restoration of the complex. The base of the prang was covered and connected with the wihan in the Late Ayutthaya period (1629 - 1767).
The temple was seriously dilapidated and restored by the Fine Arts Department.
Historical data about the monastery and its construction are unknown, as there is no evidence from surviving documents. With most sites in Ayutthaya all records were destroyed during rhe fall of the city to the Burmese in 1767.
In the vicinity of Wat Jao Phram stood a bridge crossing Khlong Chakrai Yai called Khun Lok Bridge. Khun Lok can be translated as Ruler of the World, which is Brahma, the Creator. There could be a link between the name of the temple and the bridge as both are referring to Brahma. For this reason, the temple could also have been
known by the name of Wat Khun Lok.
It’s a small site with not much to see. It can be skipped for most people but a nice addition to other temples in this area.
