  • Sharing the different types of welding hoods and brands that I have tried over the years. Why I've changed to a "pipeliner" pancake hood compared to a sugar scoop hood. The type of welding shield you use really depends on what you are comfortable in and what works best for your cureent work invironment.

    Interesting. I'm an Ironworker by trade and almost all of us want the biggest lens we can get because we almost alway weld in weird positions and need to be able to see. Plus we are required to wear a hardhat with our welding hood. Me and most the guys I work with use a Jackson hood with a 4.5 by 5.5 inch number 10 gold lens. If for some reason it blows off my head and falls 100+ feet I won't cry because I can get a new one with a new lens for about $60.

    If you work in a shop, auto dark is the way to go. A lot of strain and injury to welders is in the neck from flipping hoods down all the time. Autos let you keep working without the need to do that. Even now they are coming out with crystal clear ones that give you better sight when the hood isn't active, as well as a clear view without the dark green color.
    Working rigs and lines in the bush you've gotta go fixed, don't have time to mess about if the batteries go dead, or if something happens to the auto dark mechanism. Though I would take the pancake over the the fat boy any day just for how light it is, and when you're just burnin rod not stop on a pipe you don't want some heavy hood.

      I fab big electrical enclosure buildings in a shop. When we are framing them I am on ladders 10ft and stuff like that. Overhead, horizontal, vert. I have always used a pipeliner with the flip up lens part so you can grind with it on too. I personally use it I guess because I've been using it since I started and am just good with IT. But trust me..I get the neck thing..very good point.

    • @backwoodslawncare1352
      @backwoodslawncare1352 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Edward Ramirez pancakes are good for pipe liners because thy are out of position on every weld beckus it’s a pipe and there just a little easier to move around in and are a-lot closer to your face than a normal hood and they block out light from behind you so you don’t get glare

    • @willbecker5632
      @willbecker5632 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alot of guys use the pancake hood because they dont let light in from behind, but I use modified sugar scoops/ pipeliner hoods. Mine has a flip front and I cut the top half off and replaced it with leather as well as the bottom half of the hood and I did that to reduce backlight with my hood on a hard hat and so I can fit my head in very small spaces.

    Steve Fenton passed away in 2015. I just got a tig welder, and I am adding gas to my lincoln mig. I also just picked up a plasma cutter. I've been looking for suggestions on a hood - I've been using cheap harbor freight and local welding supply hoods (less than $100). I am having problems seeing what I am typing right now, thanks to one of those hoods. I've been told to look at an optrel, a lincoln viking, and most recently a pipe fitter told me I need to get a Wendy's pancake with an eagle vision auto darkening lens. I just need to see what I'm doing. Do you have a suggestion for the best visibility of my arc? I really don't have a bunch of money to dump into a helmet at the moment due to dropping several thousands of dollars on welders, cutters, gas cylinders, consumables, etc. That wendy's hood is looking pretty good at $150 (with the lens), but I have never used a pancake. I will be mainly tig and mig welding. I really enjoy your content and the way you present info. Thanks for the effort you put into your channel.

      That arc is prob gettin in from underneath. Your eyes might get used to it eventually. If not, then you could get a pancake, this would eliminate any arc from getting in.

      Any chance u have light colored eyes? wear good quality uv rated safety glasses under the hood. I have light blue eyes and i find im more sensitive to it. I wear good safety glasses under my hood that are uv rated it keeps my eyes from hurting and saves you from the effects of getting flashed around other welders. I also always keep a pair of the shade 5 hobart glasses close at hand if im close to other people welding, especially indoors. Also make sure u arent using a shade that is too dark. I find if my hood is too dark i get eye strain from trying to see what im doing.

      Every pancake hood I’ve ever bought have not came with a lens. You have to buy those separately. But yes I use auto darkening lens. Singles is the brand I use. I usually get a couple years or more out of one. What you may have heard about changing the lens was most likely the clear lens. They are to protect the actual auto darkening lens. One goes on the outside and one goes on the inside.
