You know, funny enough, I never noticed how frequently Arthur's voice changes throughout the film until quite a few online critics pointed it out. Now I can't unhear it every time he switches back and forth between little kid voice to preteen. Apparently, he had three different voice actors and that's why, but it is kind of hilarious, even if unintentionally.

omg I only noticed the voice change when he was a fish (just took it as, well, he's a fish now so make sesne lol) but I had no idea the kid had 3 different voice actors! That's so interesting!

    Okay, a couple of things:
    1. To help you answer some of your questions, the story is based on a book which is based on the legend. This movie is based on the first part of “The Once and Future King” by T.H. White, a collection of shorter novels that retell the Arthurian legend with a mixture of reverence and irreverence. In the book, Merlin had an affliction: he experiences time in reverse. So, this means when someone meets him for the first time, he cries bitter tears because it’ll be the last time ever seeing them; likewise, he’s happy to meet someone for the first time during a heartfelt goodbye.
    2. You asked about Arthur’s parents. His father was the former King of England (the one that was mentioned at the beginning of the movie that died). His name was Uther (OO-ther) Pendragon. During his reign, Uther made many enemies and knew that his son would not be safe. To ensure that Arthur was protected, he sent him away and had Sir Ector (Arthur’s stepfather) raise him as his own. Uther was soon poisoned thereafter, and the land was divided amongst barons and lords until a new king could be decided. Hence also why Arthur was worthy of drawing the sword from the stone.
    3. The wizard’s duel remains one of the best highlights, and my favorite part, of this film. It’s imaginative, funny, and has really good animation. Additionally, it’s very clever with each transformation as Merlin chooses animals that aren’t as threatening as, naturally, Mim chooses predators that kill. Also, as the fight drags on and Mim’s frustration to losing to Merlin grows, she makes her transformations bigger and more threatening while Merlin becomes smaller and smaller. When Mim finally decides to cheat again and transform into a dragon, Merlin becomes the smallest organism that ultimately brings Mim down.
    4. Finally, each lesson Merlin teaches Arthur will have an effect during his reign as king (some of these are interpretations):
    a. the first lesson about the dangers and enemies that Arthur will encounter (the strong that prey on the weak) and that with intellect and resolve, he can overcome them.
    b. the second lesson about the power of force, particularly love. Love can be wonderful, but it also can be used, even accidentally, to devastate. Also, trying to be anything but what you actually are will be revealed leading to tragic results. This also foreshadows the tragic heartbreak that Arthur will encounter during his reign between his wife, Queen Guinevere and his best friend, Sir Lancelot.
    c. the third/fourth lesson with the importance of freedom and the abuse of power. The feeling of becoming a bird and soaring through the sky without being confined is an important concept as Arthur will come to know and respect the liberty of freedom for his people as well protect it from those who would suppress or abuse it. Additionally, the introduction of Mim showcases how magic and power can be abused for their own selfish means. Thus, through Merlin, Arthur sees the importance of his own future power for good.

omg thank you so much for all of the information! 🙏😻
      1. That's so cool it's based on a series of books! Was Merlin part of the legend? Or was that something that was added in the books?
      2. Ohhhh that's so interesting! And makes a lot of sense tbf Also love the actual pronunciation of Uther haha 🤘
      3. Yeah that's so true! The wizard duel was super entertaining! Also love the deeper aspect of it 😋
      4. Love it! Love everything that you wrote. Important lessons to be taught that's for sure! 😻

9:25 the songs were written by the Sherman Brothers who also wrote songs for Disney films animated and live action perspectively. Unfortunately they’re no longer living among us, for you see Robert passed away on March 6, 2012 by the age of 86 and as for Richard he passed on May 25, 2024 by the age of 95. The story of King Arthur comes from English folklore, often dubbed “Arthurian Legend”. And The Sword in the Stone was a book written in 1938 by T.H. White that serves as a version of a (at the time) modern interpretation of Arthur’s backstory. So this movie is based on a literary work based on Arthurian legend.

This is Disneys funniest movie. Like when Archimedes laughs out Merlin is the best thing for me. But it is a very diffrent and relaxed movie. Sort of wish more movies could be like this and not feel the need to be hyper fast paced all the time. And I like that Merlin makes sure to never be the sollution to Arthurs problems.

¨Rubity, scrubity, sweebity¨ playing during washing the dishes reminds me more of the song Ev'rybody Wants to Be a Cat from The Aristocats. Still the track is actually not used in any other Disney movie. Mim changing to a dragon is most well known as Maleficent changing in dragon, but also Robin Hood climbing the burning tower in despair. Merlin comforting Arthur who is told he can´t be Kay´s squire is a reuse from Jungle Book. That´s the only reuses of tracks in this movie as far as I know.

    • @embran8486
      @embran8486 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The ¨snapping sound¨ is indeed Maleficent as a dragon closing her mouth but maybe even more well known from the crocodile closing his mouth in Peter Pan when trying to eat Hook. By the way sounds of the crocs mouth closing in The Rescuers are three new sounds.

This one, like the other Disney films of the 60s and early 70s, had a smaller budget than say Snow White or Pinocchio, or the Renaissance Era movies like The Little Mermaid and Beauty And The Beast. As such, the animators had to cut costs by literally using Xerox to copy the drawings instead of manually drawing each individual frame. In a lot of close-ups, you can see pencil marks.
Arthur's voice constantly switching from a little kid to a teen was due to the original voice actor was hitting puberty and his voice was changing, so others were used at certain points.

    • @TheCatPrideCinema
      @TheCatPrideCinema  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@TheCatPrideCinema By the 60s, animation was entering the "Dark Age". Interest in animation was waning, and a lot of studios shut down completely or outsourced to other countries. Even Disney was forced to cut costs. Not helping any was that Disney had hit a rough patch and hadn't had a smash hit since Cinderella (which itself broke a previous cold streak that began with Pinocchio). Plus, to fund Disneyland, they slashed their animation budgets.

My dear, all old Disney movies start with a book 😉 and this one is the one I watched at my baby-sitter's house when I was sick.
I have to admit that some of Archimedes' lines are better in french.
For example, when Merlin introduced Arthur to him, he says he's just a little boy, and Archimedes answers " Little ? Little ? * laugh * He's tall and thin ! "
About turning the female squirel into a human, that could work but she'll still have her animal instinct.
Now, about the voices, in France, Merlin has the same voice actor than Georges Hautecourt (the funny old man in " The Aristocats "), Kay has the same than the chief of the crows in " Dumbo " one of the vultures in " The Jungle Book " Tweedle Dum in " Alice in Wonderland " and Slinky, the dog of " Toy Story ", Sir Hector has the same than Baloo, Little John and Thomas O'Malley

During the movie you asked out loud if Merlin was going to turn the girl squirrel human...well, you've seen the movie so no...but there is a little more to it than that.
Firstly it was a totally reasonable question to ask given the emotional impact of the scene. The Sword in the Stone is frankly a weird movie with it's series vignettes rather than a developed story running though it. Were this a more traditionally structured film, it would be unthinkable that such a pivotal moment in Arthur's emotional development would not be developed further in some way by bringing her back and providing closure for the audience but the film is what it is.
Now I did say there was a little more to this, well, suffice to say the squirrel scene had a big impact on a lit of children that watched it. For some it was like a gateway drug to being a furry, for others, the squirls sad despair and crying left a tiny hole in their heart.
A small percentage of those of later generations who watched it on VHS and DVD and were so affected reached out online and found others and together a tiny sub-community was formed sharing art, fan fiction etc of this romance. The girl squirrel has been named by the fans as Hazel, hardly original but it fits. With most of the art and fan fiction focused on her becoming human via magic, mostly of Merlin's had by sometimes by Mim.
Along with a desire to see Hazel happy, the paring of them is further compounded by the general knowledge that Arthur's so-called great love Guinevere is an adulteress and unworthy of Arthur's love compared to Hazel who it is implied would be utterly loyal and devoted to him thus returning the loyalty Arthur showed the undeserving Guinevere.
I would 100% call myself a fan of this ship, having not only looked at the wonderful art but read many of the stories. Oh and just to be clear as you did rightly keep repeating, "He's 12" the kind of content I enjoy for this ship are the cute, age appropriate ones like the school romance manga's and anime's, with lots of awkward, adorable, blushing.

haha yeah movie's gotta movie 😹
omg I had no knowledge of Guinevere 😹 was she part of the legend or something?
Regardless, that's interesting that the squirrel scene made such an impact on people - I can see why but it's interesting to learn the extent of it. (Also cute they called her Hazel haha)
Thank you for the information! 🙏

In the fish scenes, The big fish is called a Pike. Barracuda are sea fish.

@@TheCatPrideCinema That's the animated Lord Of The Rings by Ralph Bakshi. Amazing film, but they ran out of money halfway through and had to finish some scenes with tinted live action...

Barracudas are only in salt water. In fresh water in Europe the largest fishes are eels, catfish and pikes
