Trivia note: There were multiple voice actors for Arthur in this film, because he was voiced by actual child actors but their voices kept changing due to puberty, hence why there are multiple scenes where his voice sounds very different from the previous scene.

A great subtle message in this movie is in the kitchen scene. Merlin uses his magic to make the menial labour done by no-one, leaving more free time for study for Arthur. This conjures images of Automisation, which in it's original inception and intention, was to make all people's lives easier and give them more free time for education and preferred hobbies and pass-times. However, Sir Hector (the rich and powerful) use menial labour as a limiting factor for the less fortunate and less educated, to make their (the rich and powerful's) lifes easier. So when Merlin introduces Magic (automisation) to raise Arthur out of poverty and give him an education, he resorts to anger (violence) to threaten Arthur and Merlin. This is basically what happens today. Automated work, could lift basically all people out of poverty and allow for more time towards education, but the caveat would be that the profits from the Companies that run the machines would have to be used to pay for it, but instead Companies each make about 50 people so ultra wealthy they could never spend it in a 1000 life times and keep people as part of the machinery that make them money.

What kinds of weird brains wrote that scene? Wizard keeps turning young Arthur into various animals, which is bizarre, then we come to the squirrel wanting to make out with him, but he's just a boy, and not into.... animals. And this was a Disney movie, back when Disney movies were thought to be wholesome. Very very weird. Don't get me wrong, I loved this movie when I was a kid. Beautiful animation. So I have a couple of other facts I forgot about:
    1. The design and character was modeled after Walt. How both could be joyful, but also stubborn and angry.
    2. The film was nominated for an Oscar of Best Scoring Adaption or Treatment losing to Irma La Douce.
    3. There is an extended version of the overture song with the lyrics: “Though they tried for the sword with all their might. No knight in all the land, could draw the wondrous blade from it’s resting place. It’s secret they could not understand.
The one who was meant to rule the land and worthy of the throne. He will seek the sword with a humble heart and not for himself alone. He will be the one who was born to claim The Sword In The Stone!”
    4. The film is based on a book series from the 1930’s, but unfortunately is the basis also for the musical Camelot so both would end the same way not very good.

I think @jamesmoyner7499 might be confusing T.H. White's Arthurian novels, on which this movie and CAMELOT (1967) are based, with the Arthurian novels of Howard Pyle, the last of which was published in 1910. White's novels were originally published from 1938 to 1940, then in 1958 collected and revised under the title, THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING.

Reportedly, this was Walt’s least favorite film: He was spending more time on Disneyland than on animation, and thought he could give it to his best story man Bill Peet to handle. Walt was furious at the sloppy result, fired Peet, and resolved to have hands-on control with their next big project…namely Mary Poppins. However, Peet had done so much early work on Jungle Book, he was allowed to come back and finish the production.

This is an older Disney film that definitely needs more attention. You are one of the first reactors to it, Tim, so feel happy!
The opening theme is so goddamn good. "A Legend is sung, of when England was young, and knights were brave and bold...." (Chills just writing it!)
It wasn't until I watched the "Merlin"miniseries/movie from the 90's(with Sam Neill and Miranda Richardson)that I learned the swords name as Excalibur.
Lol, Archimedes is such a mood. "Pinfeathers and gullyfluff!"
The Squirrel scenes ending is so hard to watch for me. Fan fiction people have even written it changing, with Wart having the squirrel girl turned into a human to avoid the sadness.
Madam Mim may be a random scene, but she's so good throughout her scene and so hilarious, she was the main thing I remembered about the movie.
I know it didn't outright say it, but I feel like Merlin got Hobbs sick because he saw the future and knew he wasn't at the scene of Arthur drawing the sword, which is why he left.

There are moments where I wish that scene where he shrink everything down into one bag that would make moving a lot easier and cleaning the dishes. Plus, it’s like foreshadowing for Arthur (when others call them wart) of when he before he became king. Another movie would be fun for you to watch if you ever get a chance for a movie reaction on this is Disney’s Bedknobs and broomsticks.

Arthur is a figure that has endured so many centuries, and yet every different telling of the character and his stories, and the stories of his knights are all reintegrations and retelling of many different historical eras and cultures. Britains were invaded several different times from the Scottish Picts, the ancient Romans, the Saxons, the Normans, and each and every one of them integrated somewhat and something be it characters or cultural traditions into the Arthur legend. The Roman Empire falling eventually lead to Britain falling to ruin from the Scottish Picts, which lead to Anglos, Saxons, and Juttes coming ostensibly to help repel these invaders, but slowly, they started to take over the whole country. They were eventually defeated at the Battle of Badon Hill, and this is sort of a genesis for the Arthur legend, as there was a brief period of relative peace, but the Anglos, Saxons, and Juttes (Germans) eventually came back and conquered Britain, renaming it Angland (England) and forcing the British natives into Wales, Cornwall, and even to the coast of France (which is why there is a coastal region called Brittainy). Welsh is even derived from the old word for “foreign” as the English eventually believed themselves to be the actual natives to England. The Arthur legend lay somewhat dormant until the Normans (originally Vikings that settled the coast of France) came to conquer England after somewhat assimilating with the Britains of Britainny (who still recalled their ancestral home), and when they did, the Arthur legend as we know it today was born, incorporating elements of the warlords who defeated the Saxons, the pride and glory of the ancient Holy Roman Empire, and even some of the old Scandinavian/Norman traditions of heroic sagas and eddas.

I really enjoy The Sword in the Stone! In fact, I recently did a rewatch of this film because I had the urge to watch it again and have a good time. I enjoy the adventures of Merlin and Arthur, especially the big wizards duel between Merlin and Madam Mim(fun villain btw), which is always entertaining. Very fun Disney film imho.

I remembered that this movie is on Disney plus and it's also in the program Once Upon a Studio. I think this person should know that on the DVD of this movie are 2 cartoons that are on Disney plus. The 2 cartoons are the nominated Mickey Mouse cartoon Brave Little Tailor and the Goofy cartoon A Knight for a day.

One huge mistake: Merlin was not a "Wizard" and he would not call himself one. The title of "Wizard" was actually an occupation given to men that claimed to be able to recognize and hunt witches. Witches being both men and women. The occupation lasted till around the 1500's. Later on writers brought the word Wizard back to wrongly differentiate male and females witches.

      Wasn't a male witch a warlock?

    • @jessquinn6106
      @jessquinn6106 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@ReiseLukas Actually Warlock was used to describe a person of either gender that was a VERY bad person. Someone that did bad things especially breaking his word and sworn oaths. It was not used to describe people of Magical persuasion at first. But when church leaders decided that magic-crafting was bad, it was to describe a male witch. 'A bad person that works with the devil." But that was all the churches doing. Then Hollywood just went to town with it. Those that truly practice witchcraft know that witches are male and female and there is no separate name or title for a male witch.

Given that the music and lyrics were written by same guys for Mary Poppins, its no wonder that the song where Merlin packs his bag has words that are completely made up. Id like to believe that was their formula; having at least one song with a made up word. Merlin’s VA must’ve hated the Sherman Brothers for putting him through that tongue twister 😂😂😂
PS the Narrator and Sir Edgar were voiced by Sebastian Cadot who was Bagheera from Jungle Book

I was shocked you never told what you think of my 4 way tied favorite Disney movie. Sword in the Stone tied with, Aladdin, Return of Jafar, and Robin Hood is the best Disney movies of all time tied. No one better than the other and the best character Sugar and Spoon cute and cool but tiny parts.... Merlin and Arthur great characters. You don't neeed music alot, or alot of bright color, to make a movie, just change it up make it unique. It has alot of everything in it castles Knights brain over brawn, heart, magic it just hits everything to me, but hated by others idc the movie is tied in a 4 way battle of the best Over rated ones like stupid Lion King,, Even worse Frozen never seen or will, got to be joking. This is a masterpiece even if others refuse to see its greatness. I take pride in seeing a true gem hidden from others clouded visions of what makes a great movie. As others are hypnotized to like the SAME ,, and i repeat same old Disney ones over and over Lion King and Frozen i take joy in true art like these 4.
