I got my hands and a Yamazaki 12 and hakushu 12 yesterday. I feel I'm abit to new into wiskey to fully appreciate them. I find myself not immediately recognizing the pallet untill I flip the box and follow the aroma and pallet stated on them and then I find myself distinguishing everything on there and it is freaking awesome. Great videos, awesome reviews!
I have a confession. I'm retired and I drink whisky every morning after drinking a glass of water. It is the quiet time of day when I can truly enjoy the juice in solitude. But never accuse me of 'problem drinking.' I always stop before bedtime.
RE: Breakfast whisky - For a spring break in college my senior year, I went to Scotland by myself and stayed in youth hostels in Glasgow and Edinburgh. I had whisky at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert for almost a whole week.
My family has a history of alcholism, and I have a deep fascination with whiskey and liqours of various types (Rum, Bourbon, Scotch). Because of my family history I limit myself to 1 or 2 drinks a week of any kind. If I've had a beer or so in a week I won't have a glass of Rum until that week is over and the next begins. Sorry to share so much, just wanted to I guess.
Just picked up a bottle of this Tuesday and just opened it about 4 min ago. The first initial tasting there was something to it that I didn't like dunno what it was just something hit me odd. Second go it was there but way less. Third sip whatever it was its gone and its just beautiful and on the fourth apparently I am now drunk because I managed to miss my mouth.
@@isaacsangels7235 I don't remember how much it was then but I'd guess around $100. 4 years ago I woulda been hard pressed to pay anything over that for something I had never tried.
On a recent trip to Japan I went to the Suntory Yamazaki factory (amazing) and tried the Hakushu 18 year old. The best I've ever had - would love to see a review if you can get your hands on it!
As a bar manager at fairly high end restaurant, I can give a little insight on allocation. Highly allocated bottles (ie. blantons, bookers, Weller 12, Stagg etc.) are released to the purchaser based on the sales of the rest of the portfolio. For instance, if you sell through a case a day of buffalo trace you are much more likely to get in a case of blantons. It’s also one of the reasons Costco gets those allocations and can sell them at a decent price. The rep will tell you “ we don’t have any in stock” what they really mean is “my boss won’t release the bottle because you don’t buy enough of the BT portfolio.” Hope that helps
It's true that these items get into stores, but still don't get put on the shelf. It does all have to with business. As you said, three bottles can go off the shelf very quickly.
I am doing tasting at work of this whisky. I got my info from the internet and the distillery home page. But your comments and info adds a bit of spices to start the conversation with my customers. Thank you for this video 🙏
Such a pain to find this bottle here in Orlando, FL. Still haven't found it yet. One of the few whiskies that I want to try. I'm new to the world of whiskey. I got into whiskies with the Balvenie 12 Year Double Wood.
I have a request for Jefferson's Ocean at Sea. It's the one where they put casks on container ships to slosh around the world for years. Sounds so interesting though, considering it's been across equator 4 times! I haven't tried it yet.
That's a shame. I was hoping the drastic climate change and sloshing around the ocean would make it somewhat complex. But also sounded like it could've been a huge dud. Interesting idea though.
I really love this whiskey I'm really new haven't even looked at tasting notes or anything at all I just think it's super tasty. I got angels envy as well but I don't like it very much
Yamazaki 12...such a masterpiece and true work of art! There is a reason it is hard to find. Japanese whisky is highly palatable and like you said reminds you of a scotch whisky! Great review and thanks for the comparison of the different types of whisk(e)y. I have learned much from you guys!
May 20th is whisky day and I need to bring the fire to a tasting that day. My most cherished unopened bottle is The MaltMan Springbank 19 or the 7.3 Octomore. Which would you recommend and I'd love to hear what you think of the springbank 19.
I like multiple being reviewed if only for when they come back out in another review the experience will differ due to a different mix in that episode.
Howdy from Austin! So cool to see y'all are local. Have y'all had the chance to try the Yamasaki Sherry? Good to know what y'all think about the 18, could have grabbed one locally for 350😣. Too much but now feel better. Cheers!
Haven't had a chance to try the Sherry cask since it won whisky of the world. Too hard to come by ;-) Good choice on the 18. Austin? Sweet! We're down by salt lick on 1826.
I bought this on Saturday after convincing myself that I NEEDED it. I have to mention here that I buy my whisky from the Whisky Exchange in the City (London), and I had been there after work on Friday when I bought Lagavulin 8 and 16 and a Dalmore Cigar Malt. As the Yamazaki is my first taste of Japanese whisky I have to say that I really enjoyed it. It's easily one of those Whiskies that I could sit back and drink half a bottle of before realising that it's bloody expensive and that I probably shouldn't drink half of it in a few hours... If I had to pick out one negative with the Yamazaki 12, and I don't know whether it's a constant with all Japanese Whiskies, but the plastic screw cap... It's the only single malt i have without a cork. I love the cork, the cork is special, it adds something to the experience. A plastic screw cap doesn't. But, I digress. I know, I know, it's just a cap, the important stuff is in the bottle.
So I been noticing that's there's screw on caps and corks is there a reason for why a distillery uses either or, and is there a change to the whisky depending on what's sealing it?
No, it's purely asthetic and business decisions involving cost. The only weakness of cork, is that whisky eats the cork if it's in the bottle too long. I prefer the cork, but it's mostly for nostalgic reasoning.
slather vasquez cork is the only way to age whiskey. Screw tops are fine for capturing the taste of a whiskey at that time such as for cheaper spirits or drams but are not meant for storing of any lengthy amount of time
Russell NKD so in other words if I'm going buy a whisky that's only going last me about a month a screw on is more likely to be on the bottle rather then one that's going to be on shelf that I'm saving or only drink bits at a time.
slather vasquez if you plan on keeping whiskey a long time then yes right side up with the cork let's in just a tiny bit of air that keeps the whiskey alive & rounds the flavor, if you're into that. For screw top storing long periods of time will lead to a dead spirit. Idk if that makes sense when i say dead and alive while talking about whisk(e)y but this is what I believe & seems to be the case. But then again people usually don't store whiskey for long periods of time except for distillers unlike wine so cork or screw top will make no difference.
It was actually less copying and more of a tribute. small difference but important. Masataka trained in Scotland before working with Shinjiro to start Yamazaki. The first whisky they made was Scottish style, including shipping peat from Scotland. But Shinjiro decided that the result was too aggressive for the Japanese palate. After about 10 yrs, Masataka left Yamazaki and headed north to start his own distillery. That became Nikka.
Daniel I am looking to get a bottle of either the Laphroaig QC, Laphroaig 10 or Talisker 10. Bearing in mind that I prefer a sweet peat which would you recommend?
Congrats on hitting the 100 mark! Request time: Russel's Reserve single barrel bourbon and/or rye. I actually mooched, or rather was forced to drink, the bourbon while sitting in a bar killing time when I ran into a sales rep for the brand. The bourbon was the first I'd had that was pretty complex/awesome for a bourbon. The rye I found later and thought it was a bit of a let down.
Good choice! I'm a bourbon guy myself. My parents lived in Lexington, KY for a few years and I traveled the whiskey trail numerous times. I'll suggest a few more if you're trying to get into it more, maybe they'll even review a few. Four Roses Single Barrel, Woodford Reserve (they use pot stills!), Booker's, Eagle Rare, Blanton's, Col. E H Taylor, W.L. Weller. Any of those are well worth your time and money. There are many more!
I've tasted that whisky a couple times, and i like it very much! Baught it my self 2-3 years ago, but have not opened it yet. Mainly because you can't get it anymore, at least not near Where i live
I know you guys don't like to talk about the prices much but surely it's worth a mention in here. I live in Japan and the Amazon prices for the three whiskeys are Glenfarclas 12 $48, Yamazaki 12 $190, Yamazaki 18 $800. Don't know about the states but the UK prices are similar. Did you have any idea you were drinking $800 whiskey? Is it seriously not much better than the $50? I just found a shop selling limited edition 50ml Yamazaki 12 for 10 bucks (BicCamera) - incredible whiskey but you can't justify the price tag.
I love your channel, guys! I have started drinking whisky about 2 years ago and i am trying to learn as much as i can from every possible source. I do come and check your channel when i need advice on what to buy (Australia is expensive when it comes to alcohol) . So far i have finished a few nice bottles, weird that i started on the Lagavulin and loved it. Currently enjoying a Bowmore 15 and a Green label (soooo nice). I think i'll be getting a Clynelish 14 tomorrow... or an Oban 14, not sure yet. Also, the Aberlour 12 is such a great drop and it's affordable. Keep it up!
Have you guys tried the NAS Yamazaki? When I was in Japan a couple years ago I brought some back because I couldn't find the 12. Curious how they compare.
Haha, Rex dual-wielding Glencairns of mooched whisky, that smug smirk. Very jealous right now. Also I'm interested to know about the Japanese whiskies as I hear they can be quite good and they're a lot closer to where I am now (based in China).
The run on Japanese whisky in recent years has been wild. These magnificent bastards were very helpful in my research for my latest video about Japanese whisky.
Whenever I need to taste certain whisky I always like it early in the morning...just a dram to write my notes about the whisky before I start my wifey/motherly duties.
Interesting that you mention the demand/distribution aspect a few days after I went on a hunt around town for a bottle of Lagavulin 16 and could only find it in 2 places one of which was Vons market and there was one bottle, they were charging $120 for it the other place was a small liquor store who also had one bottle but they were charging far less for it but still a bit over priced at $75... worth it.
I do not understand how Rex viewed Daniel's initial comment a bad one. That caught me off guard. It was very interesting, I also enjoy the explanation.
Bass players are king. I was a professional studio and touring musician for 20 years before I took over running Wizard Academy and started the Whisky School. If the drummer is in charge of the band, it's the bass player that is in charge of the emotional context of the song. One slight root note change and you can take a song 100 different directions. Long live the bass players ;-)
Speaking of Buffalo Trace in this video. Any chance you can do a video on their Single Oak Project? One it was a cool experiment secondly every one I tried I thought was the best bourbon I've ever had. They all seemed great of the six I tried. Thought it was much better than any of the Pappys. I know I'm speaking blasphemy in the bourbon world, but it's true.
Andrew O'Neil I just found a place in Fresno Cali that sells them for 150 each but if you spend good money there they’ll do them for 135 before tax, I’ve been to liquor stores that try to act like they’re giving you a deal at 250
Hey guys! Keep up the great work! I would like to know your opinion on buying limited edition whiskies, such as Spice Tree Extravaganza from Compass Box as an investment. Do you feel it is worth it in general or maybe depending on the whisky and the number of bottles (rarity)? Or maybe not worth it enough when you can drink the damn thing? :P
I'm a bad person to talk about investment whisky. I don't believe in it. If I'm not willing to drink it, I won't buy it. No matter how expensive it is. There are many who disagree, but if you're looking for a money making opportunity, there are far less risky ways to make money.
Well it would certainly take a lot of discipline not to drink the whisky! Maybe I should have mentioned that I would only invest in whisky that I would like to drink either way. I guess that makes it quite less risky since in any case you have an awesome whisky in your collection but sure, I totally get your point :)
Wow.. Yamazaki 12 used to cost $40-45 just 4-5 years ago in California.. bought two or three bottles around that time and forgot about it.. but checking prices today and it's selling for more than double at $90 now. It's good whiskey but tbh, I'm a bit peeved the hype really killed one of my favorites. What's even odder is that it's more expensive than Hibiki, and Hibiki then used to be the same price but only 500ml instead of the 750ml you see now. Thankfully Hibiki hasn't blown up as much as Yamazaki has, and in fact is much bit cheaper from the extra mls. But it's still frustrating to see good booze become vastly overpriced from hype.. no way you to know if you're really getting your money's value when things are priced that way.
Have a quick question, I am a relatively new whiskey drinker, absolutely love the channel, great job. I enjoy Yamazki 12 a lot but it has been really hard finding it these days (gets sold out before I even get to the store most times), do you have any recommendations for similar whiskeys?
It's not quite the same, but Glenlivet 18 reminds me of this style. It's also bottled at the same strength of 43%. Another one is Clynelish 14. Both of these are easily available and cheaper than the Yamazaki 12 and many would say they are better. I'm a big fan of the Yamazaki but it is really overpriced even if you can find a bottle.
Luckily they ship more in regularly. Honestly though North Dakota only has the second highest alcohol consumption per capita. It is not like we are those drunks from Wisconsin. Kidding of course, I know some awesome people from Wisconsin.
please tell me the significance of the star. I know this is a 5-year-old video, but I must know. P.S. I've been binge-watching your progress and experiencing the channel's development.
I hope that the Master Mooch Rex is soon revealed to be a level 7 Red Belt Somm that broke down from the pressure of expectation, like Lazlo on Real Genius...
In the last 2 weeks I have been able to find 3 bottles of Hibiki...3 different Wellers...2 cases of Eagle Rare...and a bottle of YAMKAZI 12...AND HAD TO LEAVE 2 MORE ON THE SHELF...The gods are
I work as a hand at a liquor store in north Texas. They pay me well and I am blessed to have my job. I've tried Buffalo Trace along with Blanton's and Eagle Rare at a specific customer's house. Smoke Wagon trumps them both. And you noticed I said both because Buffalo Trace tastes like shit.
Yamazaki 18 - Daniel "it's too smooth, almost cough syrup smooth"... Personally, I find Yamazaki 18 to be slightly earthier on the nose with a little less cherry on the finish than the Robotussin DM with no age statement. But then again, tasting is subjective
"a liquor store might get an allocation of 3 bottles" what kind of liquor store gets 3 bottles at a time, and what kind of distillery gives wholesale prices on 3 bottles?
It's amazing the immensely popular and expensive Yamazaki 18 disappoints so much. I haven't tried that one but I've experienced something similar with other 18 year olds, such as the Macallan, the Glenlivet and even the Elijah Craig. For each of those I like the 12 better or at least the same so I think a lot of 18 year olds are really overpriced and overrated. Highland Park would be the exception as that one is my absolute favorite.
Well played, sir. It's because you are a man of taste and discretion.
You know what that means to me? It means you got your priorities in order, can''t forget the whisky.
its 9am sunday and i just poured myself 3 fingers of blantons. hallelujah
lol ok

I have been watching you for 2 hours straight, and every review is actually at least 3 in 1.
Great job!
I am watching this having a glass of Yamazaki 12, its epic
When I tried the Yamazaki years ago, all I could think about was how similar it was to the Glenmorangie Nectar d'or.

Missing your mouth is an important part of the whisky process.
my first dram from a newly opened bottle smelled like sulfur to me... it was weird but i also smelled it in macallan 12 and bunnahabain
How much was it for the bottle?
@@isaacsangels7235 I don't remember how much it was then but I'd guess around $100. 4 years ago I woulda been hard pressed to pay anything over that for something I had never tried.

down here in Miami Lagavulin 16 cost around $100 at several different liquor shops I've been to smh

If the drummer is in charge of the band, it's the bass player that is in charge of the emotional context of the song. One slight root note change and you can take a song 100 different directions. Long live the bass players ;-)
Wizard Academy here here! and long live good whiskey!
Rex is a giver. Love it.
Always.
I have a confession as well, i am a problem drinker, i like to do algebra after drinking, sometimes even while drinking.
safety first!
Dont 'derive' while drunk!
would your guys recommend any brand of whiskey which have similiar character and note to hakushu 12
I'll see if I can get some! And personally I like a lot of bourbons better than Pappys. It's all good :-)
Is this worth 150? Super hard to find but curious about cost.
Yes! There's definitely money to be made if you have money to spend, and the patience to not touch the bottle ;-) But I'd rather drink it.
Looking forward to your announcement as well!
But it's still frustrating to see good booze become vastly overpriced from hype.. no way you to know if you're really getting your money's value when things are priced that way.
dostoveskiee I can't find it for anywhere less than $130
90 is not possible maybe you are talking bout distellers deserve yama. Its going for 180+ in Japan itself dude.
@@dont_talk2me It is possible. I just found two bottles at $105 here in Arizona just about 30 minutes ago
Mitchell and Webb, in case anyone is confused about the "Who is the captain?" reference.
YES
How much do You drink in a day? Do you get drunk?
Never. We drink around 1oz to 1.5oz per 4 episode shoot.
Try dalmore 12
I can get Blanton's in most of the decent liquor stores in Fargo. I guess we are lucky or maybe they know we drink too much here.
Man, I've hung out in Fargo, and I'm surprised that the winters don't wipe out all the whisky in a hundred mile radius. You guys are a hardy folk.
It denotes the level three graduate of our whisky sommelier school
@@WhiskeyVault awesome thank you!
I just want to come try some whisky.
Missed a bleep at 11:41 fellas
Parents threw out my Yamazaki 12 6 years ago… yeah that's true…and my Pokémon card collection was chucked too …… help me get another yamy 12 !
Whyy??
Or whiskey infused waffles with a whiskey infused syrup. With a nice glass of whiskey
"funky thumb" is probably a bassist who plays slap funk bass (uses the thumb a lot)
I hope that the Master Mooch Rex is soon revealed to be a level 7 Red Belt Somm that broke down from the pressure of expectation, like Lazlo on Real Genius...
you guys really should of saved turkey 101 for one hundredth and one episode.
Breakfast is the most important drink of the day.
Safety first.
Don’t know if anyone reads this months later but Rex totally dropped an F bomb at 1140 not edited CHAD!!!!!!!!!!!!
Japanese sure know how to make everything!
In the last 2 weeks I have been able to find 3 bottles of Hibiki...3 different Wellers...2 cases of Eagle Rare...and a bottle of YAMKAZI 12...AND HAD TO LEAVE 2 MORE ON THE SHELF...The gods are
To breakfast or not to breakfast, Whisky.
I have yet to try the Yamazaki I'm hoping to buy a bottle soon.
We sell the Blanton's at 2
At £125 in the UK, I'm going to give it a miss, but only because of price.
My father used to drink whiskey in the morning, but he got a lot more "hitty" after breakfast than you guys seem to.
You don't see us after the cameras turn off.
Don't we...
*AHA!!!!!!* ☝️
I found a missed cork-squeak opportunity....can you find it??
I wanted to try this before I discovered that this is a $200 bottle of whiskey in Australia
More Rex week. #rexweek4life
Yamazaki 18 - Daniel "it's too smooth, almost cough syrup smooth"... Personally, I find Yamazaki 18 to be slightly earthier on the nose with a little less cherry on the finish than the Robotussin DM with no age statement. But then again, tasting is subjective
Nobody catch the famous Mr.ED ?
and an eyepatch
I am not gonna lie the first thing I thought of when I say dannyboy wearing his robe. Now I know what a hobbit looks like on Halloween
Slow start to the review and the actual review was all over the place
"a liquor store might get an allocation of 3 bottles" what kind of liquor store gets 3 bottles at a time, and what kind of distillery gives wholesale prices on 3 bottles?
Sounds like heaven, not Costco.
dafuck u saying Costco is heaven b
F bomb at 11:40
That robe reminds me of the goa'uld system lords, Lord Yu LoL, I'll forgive you if you don't know what Stargate SG-1 is LoL
I spy Macalln 10yr fine oak
It's amazing the immensely popular and expensive Yamazaki 18 disappoints so much. I haven't tried that one but I've experienced something similar with other 18 year olds, such as the Macallan, the Glenlivet and even the Elijah Craig. For each of those I like the 12 better or at least the same so I think a lot of 18 year olds are really overpriced and overrated. Highland Park would be the exception as that one is my absolute favorite.
hurray for spreadsheets and uninteresting youtube handles.
I went to the zoo the other day, there was only one dog in it. It was a shitzu.
Hine
Stop digressing and just talk about the whisky dammit!!
LOL
Beyonce favorite
I have a bottle of it and I am not impressed definitely not worth the price
Blantons blows
