    The best knife you've probably forgotten about... That's right today we are doing a retrospective review on one of my favorite bushcrafting knives, that due to age and the swarm of new blades on the market and very well fallen by the wayside. The TOPS BOB Fieldcraft, once touted to be a game changer, does it still hold up with all the newer blades or should we leave this little guy as a relic to the past?

    Thanks for the vid my brother of bushcraft! I’m a proud owner of the TOPS BOB in 154 cm AND the Mora Garberg! I agree with you about how they really achieved an amazing edge geometry on the BOB. There’s nothing like it in that price range. Only if they would up the frequency and lower the amplitude of their jimping it would be as perfect as it is graceful and fearsome. And having the Garberg, it’s like having two kids. You love them both equally, yet their differences make them uniquely qualified to put a smile on your face no matter who you choose to have at your side. There are many minutes of indecision before I pick up one or the other before heading out. More of these “From the Vault of the Forgotten” would be great. Peace

      Love your knife I have the BOB in 154cm tumble finish, this & my SAK (champ) are the only two knives I take into the woods these days, performs all my bushcraft tasks with ease, great heat treatment/tempering & grind, perfectly balanced (I can spin it around in my fingers) quality fit & finish👌. (definitely a knife for life imho: wouldn't hesitate recommending it) For my next knife purchase I'll be looking at your stock first!

    Got the Fieldcraft back in 2015 when I was buying lots of TOPS knives. Loved it.
    I gave it to my youngest son when I got a Brakimo.
    The Brakimo just fit me better.

      @@AlaskanFrontier1 I do, gets a bit of flak for the rounded spine, but from what I've read, it's intentional as they use a differential heat treatment.
      But it does need a sharpen. Never used a modified scandi grind, but should be simple as I use ceramic stones anyway.

    Cannot agree more about the edge...I own the Brakimo and I think you would like it . The edge is wicked but I think it has a better belly to tip profile than the Bob.
    I also think the Dragonfly would also be better cause it's a thinner knife yet same scandiVex...I'm considering that one but I really want to get an Lt wright Genesis in my collection.

    Nice Video... I will buy a new Knife. But i don't know which Knife are better. The ESEE 5 with 6,35 mm or the Tops Fieldcraft with 5 mm. Both Knifes are in my heart. But so expensive now. Greetings from Berlin/Germany ✌

    I have not gotten to actually see and handle the TOPS BOB, but I'm very interested in it. Viewing TH-cam's it sounds like most reviewers like it, but with some drawbacks. Some TH-cam's talk about how big the handle is, my question is will it work for someone with smaller hands, and the weight of the knife for a smaller sized person to use. Any thoughts?

    • @AlaskanFrontier1
      @AlaskanFrontier1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For a smaller person I would probably choose a smaller blade more in line with a Condor Terrasaur or Mora Bushcraft Black to start with. Not a huge price commitment but you can always go up in size if you feel the need.

    I love my bob, but recently bought a terava jakaripuukko. The terava, at one third the price, performs much better. Taller grind and imo better steel. The terava is my go to knife.

    Its slightly over built though. In hindsight I'd rather get the mini bob. if the Bob was as thin as the mini it would be better

  • @s.s.6812

    Needs 90 degree spine and pommel and not that with that coating. Then they might have a competitor vs Garberg.

  • @desertfoxxx98
    @desertfoxxx98 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's actually a sabre grind, this modified Scandinavian grind shit is incorrect.
    Also I think it's always been a sabre grind since it came out. I think I'll get one.

      But yeah, get one.

    I have the BOB and wish that I had not bought it. I find the knife too heavy and the blade too thick. I believe it would make a poor knife for processing game.If you like batonning it's great for that. I have the camp creek knife and it is a better knife.

  • @goodtimes1046
    @goodtimes1046 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've used the TOPS BOB for a while now and found three things are clear; One, there's hot spots on the handle because it's too square... Two, it's too handle heavy... Three, the ferro rod striker is a fail, complete garbage. Overall it's nice and one of my more used blades, but lets not build the thing beyond what's true.
