I really like my BOB knife, but I did lose it once. The sheath turned upside down and the knife fell out of the sheath while I was cutting firewood, and there was about ten inches snow on the ground. I looked over a large area for about a month and finally found it. The knife had rusted some on the unprotected part of the blade. I cleaned it up with some steel wool and oil, there was no pitting but there were stains. I still carry this knife a lot, it is still good to go. I will be taking it back to the factory in Ucon Idaho on my next visit to Idaho Falls, the good folks there said that they can recondition it for me. I also tightened the sheath up with some heat from a heat gun by pushing the sheath material in more at the heel of the knife.

Some years ago I found mink oil, or now known as Kiwi conditioning oil to be the best rust inhibitor for the outside surfaces of my firearms, I live in a humid state so the firearms that don't get used as much stay rust free while stored in my gun safe, I also use it on the B.O.B. blade (stone washed version) and the micarta handle as well to keep it conditioned, I have not had any gripping issues from applying the oil to the handle, I take a heat gun to the knife or if you do not have a heat gun use a hair dryer, (thrift stores have dozens of cheap hair dryers) after I coat the knife then wipe down with a clean terry cloth, I've had a 100% success rate with kiwi conditioning, leaves no stains nor does it contain harsh chemicles.

Thanks John for a great review. I also have this knife and love it, but don't necessarily like that shango notch much either. I find it does not work so well. I stripped the coating off of mine and put a forced patina on it. It is a great and capable blade.

Great Review/ Video,,,, Let’s see,,, One Knife Mindset,,?? Is that like trying to convince my wife on a “One pair of Shoes”,,, “One handbag” philosophy,,,??
I don’t think that’ll hunt,,!!! Even Dave Canterbury would say,, the best knife is the one that you have,, when you really need it,,,!!! Even my Victorinox, ranger grip, one handed trekker , would be the perfect knife,, if that’s all I had,,,
Great Review Brother,,,, God’s Blessings to You,,,, Joshua

0:51 I have a brother's in arms knife by fieldcraft and I love it. Just on the sheath some of the fasteners are coming out and I was wondering if they had a place where I could get some more if you knew of anywhere they're just a little specialty fastener one end screws into the other

I have a few knives but one of them is a TOPS Brakimo which is very similar to the Brothers Of Bushcraft knife, and it's a really good field knife or survival knife. Currently I'm trying out a Morakniv Carbon Garberg with a JRE leather Dangler Sheath because I'm wanting a custom bushcraft knife eventually in the Woodlore Style with O1 steel and scandi grind, and before I spent that kind of money, I wanted to try a knife that's cheaper but quality and the same scandi grind, blade length, etc. to see if it fits my needs. I started out with a big chopper knife, Ontario SP10 Raider Bowie, and it's a good knife, but over the years I've settled on My Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe for the heavy tasks, with a Silky Big Boy 2000 XL folding saw, and then a smaller medium sized knife for the smaller, finer detailed tasks, and the Mora with a 4 inch blade fits that niche pretty well, but could serve as a impromptu one tool option survival knife if it was all I had. A Leatherman Supertool 300 rounds out my tools in the Bug Out Bag. Right now the Brakimo is on my Battle Belt as a makeshift combat knife, but not really made for that role. Eventually I plan to get a TOPS Operator 7 for my combat knife, then the Brakimo will be used somewhere else in one of my kits or as a backup knife. I love it, but if I can improve my system then I should and a slightly smaller knife that's just a bit more nimble and weighs less then why not lol. If I didn't use an Axe then I'd probably stick with the Brakimo. Kind of going off on a tangent, but yeah the Brakimo is a solid knife, same length and modified scandi grind as the Brothers of Bushcraft and it is a great knife, I'd recommend them both to anyone looking for a good performing solid survival knife. I use a Fallkniven DC4 Sharpening Stone and Strop with Compound to maintain my edges. Great review showing it in action. Could not agree more with your final comments, all very accurate in my experience. Take it easy man.

Brother John, I "Cold Blue" my carbon steel knife blades just like my rifle barrels and it nearly eliminates any rusting. I've been doing this for years and have suffered no ill effects from that, from that, from that.........😄.

Tim, I couldn't agree more! I carried two different Old Hickory knives as belt knives with sheaths I made for about 20 years. I never attempted to baton or anything with them, I had a small belt axe or tomahawk for that kind of work.

Sometimes a guy just LIKES a particular knife package. My 'takeaway' here is that the basic knife and swivel sheath offer a bit more than others. Ferro rod? Ummm...took that off. Striker? ...Nah: don't use that. Bearing block divot? ...Might be good for others.😊

What you describe as a scandi grind actually sounds like a chisel grind, a scandi has no secondary bevel where a modified scandi has a small secondary bevel. That makes it stronger than a traditional scandi when doing rough work (theoretically) and almost as good as a true scandi for detailed wood carving.
That is the reason the traditional British bushcraft knife was intended to be a scandi, for woodcrafting spoons and the like.

    • @boonedockery7220
      @boonedockery7220  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I was using TOP's description of the blade. The way the blade is beveled, it's very difficult to see the "Modified" aspect of the blade...

I have a Brakimo, it's a good survival knife, but since I use an axe for the heavier tasks, I went with a slightly smaller knife, Morakniv Carbon Garberg(and eventually a custom bushcraft knife in the Woodlore Style design), for finer detailed tasks that require a nimble knife. If you are also using a large chopper knife, hatchet, or axe I'd say go with a 3 or 4 inch bladed knife, but if you just plan to use a saw and one all around survival knife or bushcraft tool, then I think the brakimo would serve you well.

I have this blade in stainless. Great for batoning and woodwork. I find it heavy and too thick a blade. I don't think it would be to good for game processing.

This isn't a review so much as a hymn of love from owner to his much loved tool. If one was in the market for such a knife one could not help but be sold. I would love to know who came up with this one knife idea - let's just say I am not convinced!

I feel very fortunate to have been gifted with the BOB Fieldcraft Knife. Over the past couple of months, I have become very aware of the magnitude of KNIFEDOM! One could spend years research all of the knife options available. With more being designed and manufactured each year, researching knives could easily be a full time job! I personally am not sold on the one knife philosophy. However, if need be, I could make do quite well with this one.

Unpopular opinion : the Tops BOB is in my over rated. Is it a bushcraft knife? A survival knife? A tactical knife? I dont know.
That knife is lost trying to be too many things. Colors, jimpings, size, sheath, writing on the blade. That knife is just too much and not refined at all. Too much money for a 1095 blade and it’s not even a real scandi. Not a knife for the purist to say the least. They look gimmicky to me.

Interesting. I guess in my case ignorance is bliss. I honestly didn't consider any of the items you mentioned. Of course it was a gift. Perhaps had I purchased it myself, a lot of the items you mentioned would have manifested themselves in a way that would have prevented me from deciding to purchase one. I really appreciate you posting this comment. Perhaps many that are considering purchasing one will have a solid list of issues to consider to make an informed decision. Have a great day!
