Great White Shark Encounters a Surfer & a Curious Young Shark Engages with Pollution.

- In this footage, captured just last weekend, I record a couple of great white shark encounters. One of those encounters leaves me lost for words as the shark gets incredibly close to surfer unaware the shark is there. I also record two different sharks taking an interest in ocean debris. One shark engages with a floating Pepsi carton. The difference in interest from the smaller shark and the larger shark is most interesting.

It blows my mind how often we are so close to these majestic yet ultimately extremely dangerous animals and yet they don’t attack.
I think its how if we as humans have food in front of us but are not hungry, we’re not gonna eat so why would the shark? None the less I’d be shitting my pants if I saw a shark irl
@@logan2829 They don't hunt humans. That is very clear with all the info we have. A starving shark would? Probably. But not only a Shark, any meat eater with a proper size would. It's muuuuuch more likely to be attacked by any land predator.
When one shark attacks a surfer, or swimmer (very very rare) it's probably an accident between them. I'm thinking in a nervous or afraid shark mainly.
It's more common (still rare) an attack diving with them, because divers can annoy the shark. And they do, many times, with brainless interactions... But I have not seen yet any hunting behaviour in those warnings you can see in few videos tbh. Even with agressive animals.
Now, go the the african savanna and walk arround next to lions, for example. You can do it after they have eaten if you want, to prove that point. I would never do that xD.
We are not on the diet of sea predators. We never shared those ecosystems with them (just few hundreds of years and not really in the water). In the other hand we evolved from african hominids and we allways have been in the same areas than those big cats. We have been during millions or at least thousands (in the last territories we arrived) of years in the mainland, with all those animales. Big cats, crocs, bears, no matter which one. Even the herbivores are much more dangerous. I'm thinking in hippos. Or deers, that kill arround 100 people each year only in US, for example.
We have been their prey, their competitors or both during all that time. Now we are just their destroyers...
We should help and save all the wildlife we still have in the planet.
Agreed. I was in New England swimming and lifeguards told us to get out of water because gw sharks were feeding on the seals. I couldn’t believe I was in water with them. Needless to say that was the first and last time. I wade in the water and that’s it.
First, these are juvenile great whites, they don’t feed on mammals just yet until they reach about 10 feet. So these interactions are just curiosity.
Second, any predatory animal species instinctively understands the size of the prey they can/prefer to feed on. I understand marine biologists are trying to mend the often terrifying reputation of these apex predators, but the reality is, if a mature great white is hungry, and it senses edible prey (yes, humans too) who’s unaware of the shark’s presence (they prefer sneak attacks to avoid injury), then it will bite and consume a human. The reason most incidents don’t result in full consumption is because after the initial attack, they circle, waiting for the prey to weaken and bleed out (avoiding injury). In this time, unlike seals, etc, humans often get rescued and brought to shore.

Makes me wonder if it was better for the surfer that it was the larger, more experienced shark that swam by the surfer because it probably has encountered enough other surfers to knows it's not food
At least it was better not to see what company he had. Otherwise who knows what kind of moves he would have made with what kind of reactions.
yes! often times young predators are more "dangerous" bc theyre inexperienced and are learning. think of how many times you accidentally bumped into someone or hurt your friends as a kid/preteen playing lmao
@@auroratovar5455 the younger white sharks stay inshore to feed on fish, mostly rays. When they reach a certain size their diets begin to transition to mammals and they generally migrate to the offshore islands where they can hunt Sea Lions, Elephant Seals, and the like.
@@auroratovar5455 I always tell people that animals, when they're younger, are just like people; they're curious about the world and want to touch it. The only problem is they don't have hands like we do so they use the next big dextrous thing they have - their mouths.

Great footage! I live in Huntington Beach and have surfed up and down the CA coast my whole life. Out of all those years I've only seen one white shark break the surface while I was in the water. Your footage makes me think... out all those years we must have had sharks under us or around us many times and we never knew it! Your footage is amazing, keep up the great work!

@@TheMalibuArtist back in 2014 I was in Laguna Beach standing on a staircase on a cliff leading to the beach. I felt like I was being watched, and saw a young GWS raise his/her head out of the water to look at me. As I watched I felt a sense of awe looking at this curious animal before it slowly swam away. Sadly, I didn't have a good cell phone then ( only a flip phone), so didn't get any photos.

Confirms once again that GWS is not a senseless killer. It was curious about the surfer. Yikes if only the surfer knew how close it was to him 😛
True, but their jaws aren't fully hardened until they're 10ft+, which is why they're not yet interested in eating mammals. As big as that shark is, it's still a juvenile and most likely still eating fish and rays.
of course they dont kill senselessly, they kill when they're hungry!

The shark could have been protecting the surfer from younger sharks too. To know what it is is astonishing.

it really shows how people are mistaken for how sharks act, especially how you were saying dont bite him, which is what I would be saying too but it shows how little we know about these amazing creatures and as a surfer i am glad i found you because you changed my outlook on sharks, thank you for that
Have you considered reaching out to whatever government agency is responsible for lifeguards along the California coast? If they see your drone video, they might put some emphasis behind the idea of drones with rapid warning systems for swimmers/surfers. Drones would be a game changer for lifeguards.
Likely no lifeguards for miles where these surfers are in this footage.
What is there to warn swimmers about? It’s well documented Sharks aren’t actively hunting humans. Only time there are attacks is mistaken identity

It is just incredible how common these interactions are. They are right there, all the time. And none of us had any idea.
I'm always surfing in malibu and I've been watching your videos for awhile for just self interest and educational purposes but that last clip with the learner on the longboard gave me so much anxiety. just soo thankful sharks aren't really what they're made out to be by most people. so much respect for those big guys
It clearly shows that humans are not the chosen prey items of these sharks. Most are accidents, where the nip of the shark just means curiosity, but yeah, they can bite off a big chunk doing that....
Using drones teach us a lot about their behaviour, and clearly can keep beaches saver
I live on the Gulf Coast of Florida. People have so many encounters they are unaware of. Ever felt something/someone bump into you really hard and look to see who it was and there's no one? Ever feel something rough like sandpaper scratch against you when you're in the water but again, see no one? Be glad they tasted you that way instead of taking a nip to check if you're tasty or not.
I've caught and seen sharks in waist to knee depth water. They are so common. They must usually not see humans as prey. However, how does one account for instances where GWS target people in clear water and largely to totally consume their victims.

Folks like you have done a fantastic job over the years of safely exposing us and Great Whites to one another in a safe and educational way. (Frankly, probably safer for them than for us).
While I’m certainly not excited to jump in and look up close to them!!!! I have grown a more educated appreciation for them in my nearly 5 decades on this earth. You’ve helped to bring us a long way from the 70’s. Hats off. Keep up the good work. They need ya to.

I have had shark phobia for the past 37 years, including the years I served in the navy. I have this deep fear the monsters will eat me even I am on land. (Due to Jaws) Only until I saw you footages, have more understanding about them. Now I am freediving and spearfishing two times a week in SoCal without any fear. So thank you, these video is the greatest bridge between science and tales.
I'm 33. First saw JAWS at 7. That movie has put fear in me and I am terrified of swimming in lakes. I love swimming and the water learned how to swim in swim teams when I was 3.won awards etc. I could be at the beach all day and not get bored. But it's always in back of my mind.. Visual effects from JAWS the music etc. True terror. I can't even force myself to go in a dark deep lake. I'm even scared while sitting on a blow up intertube. And someone yells shark like my friends im done for. I'm even paranoid in our local outdoor swimming pool.... I have never been in the ocean. Never been outta WI. and I don't plan to. I seen videos and movies and shark week all my life to have respect for them. But not even if hell freezes over you won't get me in the water...
Without any fear? Can't be that trusting when swimming near/with sharks. Esp GWs. They. Can turn so fast. I always say... Don't get to. Comfortable in the water. There's always that one hiding and lurking watching you... Don't drop ur guard..
@@SharkWhisper00 I agree with you we can’t predict these animals totally. we spear so yes we are so aware and on guard all time. I respect and will not treat lightly, but absolutely no fear because I told myself not to. Fear will trigger their hunter instinct we are telling them we are prey. No. We need to tell them we are hunter and stand our ground. That’s the only way we can survive.

I am not surprised the surfers stayed. I have to believe they are all aware of the dangers that lurk below them but their love of the ocean and surfing overrides any fear. Great video!

I’ve thought about life guards doing that too! Would be an efficient safety measure.
It almost beggars belief that drones are NOT already being utilised in this way across the world by government, councils, lifeguards for better protection , safety and prevention of would be attacks and unwanted interaction between shark/s and swimmer/s !! Privacy wouldn't be an issue because the drone/s are only getting a very high up overall water shot of swimmers and NOT anything up close and/or personal !! I know personally that if I had a drone to keep watch I would absolutely learn/go surfing and swim regularly at the beach !! ( JAWS has pretty much kept me out of the water because I was so traumatized by it when I was a child !!) I hope they start using these contraptions, lol , sooner rather than later !! A Shark-Warning alarm with Flashing White LED's on top of the drone is such a brilliant & novel idea. The operator can choose to activate the audio, the visual, or they can opt to activate both warnings simultaneously.
Imagine every popular beach having its own drone combing the busy surf from Dawn til dusk, monitoring the nearby sharks without causing a panic. This type of monitoring would help beach-goers and surfers to better understand this predatory animal in the common places of cohabitation.
Drones will forever change human/shark interaction the same way that online-purchasing has evolved the concept of "shopping."
It seems so ironic that the key to understanding the complex nuances of life beneath the water would come from just above the waves...

Fantastic footage MalibuArtist! Great to show the shark had zero interest in that surfer. Interesting stuff with the pollution there as well. We know sharks are highly curious animals, and will investigate floating debris like this. It's also why we believe sharks often get entangled in certain types of debris, their curious nature will bring them in close contact with it, for example nets/plastic debris. Fortunately these two debris items in the video don't pose much risk from an entanglement perspective, but its a great demonstration of how sharks can eventually become entangled in pollution!
Couldn't you have a sign on your drone. "If i'm within 10 feet of you there's a shark in the area."

I just want to say thank you for all of your wonderful footage! I lived on Galveston Island for a few years, and found a few shark teeth along the shore, which led to a total fascination with these animals your work is just amazing!
A warning system would be really usefull in some scenarios! However, I'm thinking if the kid in this video would've started panicking, this video might have been a less peaceful interaction!
That is a phenomenal idea. I pray they get back to you on the shark warning system on the drones! Or if you could some how put a mic loud enough for them to hear but light enough to still fly you could patent it!

We just stayed at a beach house on Mission Beach. I could have sworn that I saw a big body of something in one of the waves. I thought it could've been a shark. My husband didn't think so, but now I do. They're much closer than we believe. I love your work.

As always thanks for such amazing footage!! I was literally on the edge of my seat watching the surfer that close to such a big shark, he was very lucky the shark wasn't interested in him. Hopefully you'll find a drone company willing to at least take your ideas into consideration.

When ever I am surfing and I see a drone I always just think that it is filming a shark because there is a good chance it is. It good to stay alert in the water all the time.
