  • A 14-year-old drone pilot says he feared for the worse as he filmed a "huge" white pointer swim underneath surfers in South Africa's Western Cape region. Zach Berman, an aspiring wildlife drone photographer, said he was monitoring shark activity with his father at Plettenberg Bay when the shark drifted into view. "At first, I was struggling to comprehend what I was seeing," he said. "It began to make its way towards the surfers and I feared for the worse; I really didn't know what was going to happen."

Maybe lifeguards should be running a drone periodically to look for sharks all the time swimmers or surfers are out in the water.
They could observe better using a drone than using binoculars from a tower in the beach.

There was an incident in california where a surfer found his tigh in the jaws of an orca. He had paddled out there was not enough wind, and seals were in the area.
Orca was not fully grown and realized the mistake. And let go. Without major injuries even though the surfer needed stitches. Orcas are picky eaters and intelligent. Sharks on the other hand can have a "take a bite first, then decide if it is food" policy.
Muddy low waters are also dangerous because sharks have an incentive to bite no matter what - so the potential food will not be able to escape.
I think humans are not fat enough to be interesting prey either for sharks or for orcas.
But only orcas will quite reliably take the time to figure that out and leave the human alone after that.
There are not deadly attacks of orcas on humans (in the wild).

@@xyzsame4081 This is not true. Biologists say this only to try to prevent the animal from being further hunted and demonized. A great white shark does not attack anything or anyone by mistake. It is an extremely evolved animal, full of sensors. It knows exactly what a seal is and what a human being is. They usually only take one bite, to avoid being hurt in any way. They bite, move away, and wait for their prey to bleed to death. Only then do they finish the job. Great white sharks are amazing animals. The sea is their home, we are the intruders. I regret every attack on human beings, but I understand that the animal is in its home, struggling daily to survive. When you live in this reality, any easy meal is welcome. And for our misfortune, in the water we are helpless, easy targets. These surfers were lucky, the shark was clearly on the lookout, positioning itself and examining the possibilities.

Beautiful footage! If you guys want to see more, there's a guy who films a lot of sharks with his drone, and especially encounters with humans in California. He's doing a fantastic job educating people about shark behaviors. He's got beautiful footage too and his commentaries are amazing. His channel is TheMalibuArtist. From what I understand, the shark in this video seems relaxed and just investigating the surfers. He doesn't show any agressivity and decides to put some distance between himself and the humans after a short while. According to TheMalibuArtist, encounters like this one are much more common than we think, as most of the time people aren't aware that a shark is nearby.

Spot On! This exact same drone footage is captured DAILY here in Southern California by several drone operators including myself. Usually they are juvenile Great Whites from 8' to 12' feet. The younger sharks seem the most curious and will get close and follow surfers around. The larger, wiser sharks will often push the juveniles away from surfers and then observe them from a distance, relaxed with their pectoral fins out wide. An aggressive shark, or one about to feed send a clear signal by posturing and arching their back, drawing their pectoral fins downward, and swim in a more rigid erratic manner. The White in this video is a content, relaxed, curious shark, just cruising and being one with its environment. White sharks are generally not aggressive, and the few attacks on humans are usually mistaken identity when a human dresses up in a seal costume complete with flippers, and splashes around in murky water. A white will never come back for a second bite once it realizes you dont taste like a seal. A tiger shark on the other hand, is large and aggressive, will come back for more, and is responsible for far more attacks with a larger percentage of them being fatalities. Great Whites really get a bad rap from the movies. I remember back in the 70's here in California, after the release of JAWS, GWS were targeted heavily. Every day someone had one, sometimes several, hanging by the tail on a hoist at the local landing, taking "hero" pose photo ops. Even today as an avid fisherman, I cringe remembering this. No food or commercial value, no reason other than fear and novelty from the imagination of a movie maker telling us they are monsters. In that decade they were killed off to near depletion, the seal and sea lion populations skyrocketed to the point that fish populations were dropping. The whole food chain was altered. These are by FAR the most misunderstood animals on the planet.

    • @scottthroop6208
      @scottthroop6208 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Some may point out the footage seen regularly on TV of Great Whites aggressively attacking shark cages, seemingly trying to attack the diver inside. It has been proven that its the cage itself that triggers aggression, not the diver. Shark cages are constructed from mostly aluminum with steel fasteners and brackets. By submerging the cage in saltwater (an electrolyte), the combination of dissimilar metals becomes a battery that emits a low voltage electric current into the water. All sharks are sensitive to electrical current, and use it to home in on prey. They have hundreds of small current sensing organs in their snout, easily seen on a GWS, looking like freckles. Fish and sea mammals emit a weak current into the surrounding water when using their muscles, even their heartbeat emits a pulse. This is a beacon to a shark, indicating food. To a GWS, a cage emitting a current either indicates food, or if the current is higher than a biologically emitted current, it may just be irritating it, causing it to be aggressive toward it. Ive seen several tests using clear acrylic cages perforated all over with holes, that virtually disappear under water. When a metal cage is used at the same time as the acrylic cage, the sharks posture aggressively, and chew on the cage. The acrylic cage with a diver inside, the shark swims around it, pectoral fins out wide, relaxed, and not aggressive at all, just like the shark in this video.

Sharks do attack, and it is really not possible to know when they are going to decide to lunge and take that exploratory bite...luckily for the surfers, first the drone alerted them, secondly the shark was not displaying aggressive behaviour--yet--even when some of them started swimming and paddling away in quite a panicky fashion. Obviously he was at the "just checking them out" stage at that point. Or maybe he was not in the mood to hunt anything at that particular moment and just got curious. Pretty scary for the surfers though, I don't think I would enjoy the idea of "being checked out" by a shark either...

Sharks tend to hunt animals on the surface by diving down and then swimming up very fast to strike at the animal, that's not the behaviour of this shark at all.
It was just curious, like any animal might be. It's only when the paddler started splashing that the shark started moving towards them with any speed because splashing can indicate that an animal is injured or dying, and therefore potentially prey. Keep safe, try not to splash too much if you see a shark and don't move away too fast as you may trigger the chase reflex (just like dogs)

It's true that sharks explore unknown things with their mouths, since they don't have hands.
However, the surfers moving quickly, splashing, was more likely to provoke a predatory instinct than just sitting there would provoke a test bite.
A shark's prey is going to splash and increase their electro magnetic field strength as it tries to move away in a panic. Acting like prey is bad.

Three points I take from this amazing video:
1 - you can be surfing / swimming directly over a huge adult shark and never even realize (we really are ill suited to navigate the ocean)
2 - a great white shark becomes most dangerous when it knows it's in your blind spot... I feel somehow that shark knew when it entered that surfers blind spot, it's behavior changed ever so slightly and it was bold enough to come within a meter of the surfers dangling legs. As many here have commented, the paddle boarder may have de-escalated the situation by invading the sharks body space in an aggressive manner causing it to retreat and re-think its next move.
3 - The normal (non- hungry - non aggressive) great white must find surfers a perplexing prey item, as we can see because of our terrible ocean awareness surfers are usually non-reactive to the presence of a huge mature great white circling them... who knows exactly how the white shark interprets this non-reactive behavior? I guess it actually helps to avoid a lot of attacks because our lack of a typical preys reaction / fear / flight behavior. As I've heard proposed as a theory a lot of GW attacks on surfers (and kayakers) might instead be a territorial response telling us to get out of their hunting grounds... but then once blood is in the water I think all bets are off.
On a final note I can't agree with people commenting that this proves the safe / pacifist nature of a typical shark. This video shows a very dangerous situation no matter how you interpret the sharks thoughts. A shark that large and mature, coming in that close to surfers has to be interpreted as heightened curiosity in investigating potential prey. When marine biologists say sharks are "curious" animals they mean that sharks are curious whether or not they can eat the item they are investigating, this is an apex predator and this is it's MO eating known prey and discovering new prey, a sharks curiosity in you is something to be very wary of, in a split second it could turn from casual slow circling (as we see here) to a bite, literally in the blink of an eye.
As I said before, the moment where the shark is in the surfers blind spot and less than a meter from him is quite chilling, thinking what could have happened next (at 0:28)

He swam right behind that surfer. Possible that kayaker caused it to hesitate just enough to stop an attack. It’s crazy when people think they know how a wild animal does or will act. If he’s hungry enough he’d been more risky and this instance could have turned out differently.

Great footage. Almost a million views now. Drones are a new paradigm.

When a lion has a full belly , the zebra & other prey animals can walk around in relative safety , same thing here , if that shark was hungry , one of those surfers wouldn't have known what hit him.
Keep it real & don't think that an apex predator can be nice.

Humans are not part of their diet , though an exploratory bite might happen in murky water and or dawn or dusk ..If you see drone shots of them chasing seals its obvious when they are serious about their dinner .

Difference between South African and Australian surfers when they see a shark is how fast they retreat. I just watched a video of a group of surfers in Australia who saw a the shark but were cool about it, even taking their time going back to shore. Is it because sharks, like dogs, can sense fear and would chase after people more in that state of mind?
