    The ferry MV Sewol sank on the morning of April 16, 2014, en route from Incheon towards Jeju in South Korea. The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about 2.7 kilometres (1.7 mi; 1.5 nmi) north of Byeongpungdo at 08:58 KST (23:58 UTC, April 15, 2014). Out of 476 passengers and crew, 306 died in the disaster, including around 250 students from Danwon High School (Ansan City).Of the approximately 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes before the Korea Coast Guard (KCG).
    The sinking of Sewol resulted in widespread social and political reaction within South Korea. Many people criticized the actions of the ferry's captain and most of the crew. Also criticized were the ferry's operator, Chonghaejin Marine, and the regulators who oversaw its operations, along with the administration of President Park Geun-hye for her response to the disaster and attempts to downplay government culpability, and the KCG for its poor handling of the disaster, and the perceived passivity of the rescue-boat crew on scene. Outrage has also been expressed against the initial false reporting of the disaster by the government and South Korean media, who claimed everyone aboard had been rescued, and against the government for prioritizing public image over the lives of its citizens in refusing help from other countries, and publicly downplaying the severity of the disaster.
    On May 15, 2014, the captain and three crew members were charged with murder, while the other eleven members of the crew were indicted for abandoning the ship. As part of a government campaign to manage public sentiment over the official response to the sinking, an arrest warrant was issued for Yoo Byung-eun, but he could not be found despite a nationwide manhunt. On July 22, 2014, police revealed that they had established that a dead man found in a field in Suncheon, roughly 290 kilometres (180 mi) south of Seoul, was Yoo.

    April 16th, 2014, was a tragic day for over 304 passengers. Mostly school children. Innocent young lives lost for nothing.The fact that they could have been saved is so sad. May all the victims rest in peace.🙏🙏🙏❤

    As a Korean, this is one of the worst disasters in Korea. Really sadly, there was many danwon high school students on board for going on field trip. Rest in peace for everyone who died at that ship.

      @Easterwashxo The ferry had been modified to carry more cargo.The ferry was at the time manned by an inexperienced crew member who turned the ferry sharply, making it topple over as it was top heavy. The passengers were told to remain in their cabins. The footage of the school kids is also very heartbreaking.

    There was a cruise liner, the MV Jupiter, of Epirotiki Lines that sank after leaving Piraeus and collided with a freighter and sank in less than a hour. Only four (4) people perished. There were 391 British school children and 84 adults onboard and 110 crew. It's a miracle that they abandoned ship in one hour. But one student, one teacher and two crewmen were lost. It's largely forgotten but there are old news videos on youtube covering the incident. This is the total opposite of Sewol where students were lost while the Jupiter's passengers were saved.

    • @denixonjosebarajasprimera9350
      @denixonjosebarajasprimera9350 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      That was because of the rulement the captain and the crew told them [the passengers] to accomplish, which was somehow a distraction to save themselves and cause the tragedy we know currently.
      Who on his sanity tells the passengers of a sinking ship to not move and wait orders? Also, the Confucian factor enters, because they died not only for orders that never came, but also for obeying a captain, the "authority figure" according to the South Korean culture, who ended up being a coward and also a killer of course. If you see the photos of the trial of Sewol's captain, a lot of people wanted to kill the captain when he was escorted to be judged.

      @@nathanielpatterson-rc9dq They had more than malicious intentions. They were greedy people who put the business over the safety, by overloading the Sewol in first place. Also, the authorities didn't helped as intended because the passengers and not the captain, sent the distress call (that's why I said "Confucian factor" in the past comment). The same authorities who preferred to help a coward captain and crew instead of the passengers.

      *The first “paragraph” is just answering your question about why it sink. The second part is just me explaining/ranting about what happens and how the government failed them. If you want to read all of that. *
      From what I remember, it sink cause of it being unbalanced, and all the weight make the ship not be able to balance out, and there also no balance water in the ship that help it out to keep it balanced, neglect captain and inexperience crew. So very much the company of the ship ignore all the safety issue, and boat issue. They overload the boat, add extra weight on it, like added extra floors to add passengers, over 100 plus cars that aren’t tied down. Just a bunch of rich folks who don’t care about safety, and only care about money. Which cost 300 plus passengers (80% of high school student) their live. I’m definitely not fully explaining it properly.
      There is a lot of stuff that happens to this tragedy. Like the president being impeached, cast guard disbanded, hunger strike from the parent that their child was killed & ignore, mainstream media backlash due to of them lying about everyone being rescued and saved, suspicious suicide, teacher, rescuer and parent suicide, survivors guilt, local fisherman/ scuba divers who are the one who try to rescue the passengers, and rescue the bodies getting sue by the government, get ignored from the government, and left in hospital debt. Captain and the crew abandon the ship first, leaving everyone in the ship to die, while at the same time, the passengers are being told to stay put. There aren’t enough life vest, and all of them are outdate, so none of them are working. So the captain is in prison and becomes one of the most hated personal in South Korea. Cause he rather save himself, than save the kids and other passengers on board. And also South Korea president having a massive pride and ego that aren’t letting any help from the US navy vessel. Etc etc.
      So overall South Korea government let 300 plus passengers, mostly kids die in the sinking ship, cause non of them even help, only the local fisherman and local scuba divers try to save these kids. While the coast guard stand around and circling the ship without any effort to help, and acting busy. That whole situation is a huge mess and chaos, while the president doing nothing, which is why she got impeached.
