I’ve already signed up with Tesla. I’ve had a few companies give me their presentation. Telling me about why they are better than Tesla. At the end of the day. Tesla seemed like it was the most affordable. Most of the solar companies buy the power wall from Tesla. Then they sell it to their customers for a higher price. This is the best video I’ve seen breaking down Solar cost and how to pick. Great job. I wish I would have seen this last year.
You got to ask yourself how do they get to such a low cost. Inexperienced labor- Tesla has the lowest hourly payrate in the industry, this leads to crew leads with very little exp, some crews having less then 2 year experience combined Installation wait times- Sign now, Tesla will install you next year Cheap modules- good luck around year 15 when you have to start replacing modules Design specific system sizes- saving them on engineering costs stops them from being able to offer 100% offset in most cases Local incentives- in some states they take the local incentive (Ex. REC in NJ) Service- long wait times (weeks if not months for them to come to service your equipment) No critter guard- 90% of all service calls are due to squirrels nesting and chewing wires
I own an Tesla EV and have been going back and forth with them about the design of a 19kwh solar/ powerwall(x3) system. first design was at 12kwh and a weird layout, second was 14kwh system with a not so weird layout and the 3rd was a 16kwh system with a not weird but still much less than what Sunpower is offering me. I’m trying to give them a chance but from the research I’ve done so far I may have to go with Sunpower they also include 3 powerwall 2s for battery storage.
I just got my system installed. It takes 3 months from ordering to finishing installation. Their crew was super nice and professional. Your experience might be different from mine, but it doesn't mean Tesla has bad products.
I have system on a house that I just recently moved into that has shade on different parts throughout the day. It has 2 inverters, but also something called a power optimizer at each panel, which I think may be the best of both worlds between an inverter and micro-inverter. They add a bit to the cost, but if you want to squeeze every watt, and circumvent shading issues, they seem like a good choice.
I waited 6 months for them to installed. A nightmare of costumer service. 0 communication. Also read your contract before you sign. If you want to sell your home, you have to pay in full the system in order to sell your house. You don't have an option for assumable loan.
Great video Scott. Thank you. One of the big if not the biggest question is how much capacity to buy. I am in Vegas. Tesla site indicates 19KW capacity to cover 100% energy need. Should I buy more or less capacity. My NV Energy bill is almost 60% more vs. same time last year. The energy costs are getting out of control. What was your experience with selecting the capacity to buy? Thanks.
Probably a good idea to oversize, at least slightly. But unless you think you might get an electric vehicle someday, don't go crazy over. The reason is you can't cash out excess credits with NV Energy..
@@ScottAllison Thank you Scott for your reply. I read recently that net metering is only 75 cents on a dollar down from 98 cents or so. You are right. Excess capacity is almost wasted . Thank you Warren!! Is a roof solar system capable of charging an electric car? The current t400h performance warranty is 98% after 1 year and then not to exceed 0.54% / year for the remaining 24 years which puts it a fraction above 85% after 25 years.

Question about the roof under the panels. When should the roof be replaced before installing the panels. How does roof repair/ replacement work after panels are installed?
When you install solar panels it's usually with the expectation of a 25 year lifespan for the panels. If the lifetime of your roof is less than that, at some point you're going to have to pay a solar company to remove the panels, and then come back again once the roofers are done to reinstall. That's going to cost many thousands. Practically, 25 years is a very long time, but if you have less than ten years left on your roof either get your roof work done now, or hold off on solar until after you do the roof.
I just had my roof replaced earlier this year but didnt pull permits. Do you think the inspector would notice and give me a hard time when they come out for the solar panels?
I doubt anyone would notice. Unless it was done really badly! In my case the city inspector didn't even go on the roof, he just asked for photos of the installed panels.
From my perspective, solar is still only for wealthy people. And in the real world, they aren’t efficient enough for most people. You gonna get your neighbors to cut down their trees blocking your panel? What about your HOA that doesn’t allow panels on the front when your house faces south? These are both of my issues. We’re just not there yet as a society. Good for the people that can afford it and have a big roof with no neighbors. Bad deal for us regular people.

has anyone anywhere ever seen a video of someone raving about the saving of their solar system after 10 -12 years? no and do not bother looking even though solar has been around for well over 20yrs. most if not all the expensive components need to be replaced. take a power wall for example, if you google them, the reality is that they cost over 11,500 each installed, could be even higher. and most houses require more than one. inverters are very expensive as well as other components. does anyone anywhere know of a company that produces panels, and guarantees them for 20yrs or more that has not gone out of business. no one ever mentions the very very expensive cost of replacing a roof and that the entire panel system has to be taken down and put back. that is every 10yrs or so. all you hear about is how much money they are saving in the first few years, even though they are paying much more in loans than if they were paying for power, only to have to replace most things after 10yrs thus adding much more cost to the free energy.
we did change our roof after solar panels placement after 2 yrs it costs $500 to remove and place back by Tesla. not that expensive and our roof was paid by insurance due to storm.

Was that your experience? What happened
It's not telsa solar it's Sunrun is the company that your paying for .
has anyone anywhere ever seen a video of someone raving about the saving of their solar system after 10 -12 years? no and do not bother looking even though solar has been around for well over 20yrs. most if not all the expensive components need to be replaced. take a power wall for example, if you google them, the reality is that they cost over 11,500 each installed, could be even higher. and most houses require more than one. inverters are very expensive as well as other components. does anyone anywhere know of a company that produces panels, and guarantees them for 20yrs or more that has not gone out of business. no one ever mentions the very very expensive cost of replacing a roof and that the entire panel system has to be taken down and put back. that is every 10yrs or so. all you hear about is how much money they are saving in the first few years, even though they are paying much more in loans than if they were paying for power, only to have to replace most things after 10yrs thus adding much more cost to the free energy.
we did change our roof after solar panels placement after 2 yrs it costs $500 to remove and place back by Tesla. not that expensive and our roof was paid by insurance due to storm.
Lol, fake news?
Smart Green Solar offers a guarantee your panels will still work at 87% efficiency by year 25
Uh, ah, uh….can’t take it
If you're going to make a video tell the whole truth
What do you think’s missing?
What a terrible over priced deal
You can't find cheaper solar professionally installed. DIY is cheaper of course but that's just not something most people would consider.
I bet you won't answer me
Your fundamental analysis is wrong. $2 watt is not a production value. So go back to your research and get it right
$2 per watt is their former pricing, at the time the video was produced. Nothing at all to do with production.
