I recently found my old copy in my mom's old car's glovebox and I'm surprised to see videos from within the last year discussing and showing this highly underrated gem
man i've been enjoying your stuff, you are funny as heck an the quality of your videos have been pretty consistently amazing. You made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion.
I finally got around to watching this behemoth of a video. Once again, I really love how you cover games that are often overlooked like I Am Setsuna and this. The retrospective format lets me experience the games via proxy that I probably would've passed due to RPG's being too long and life being too short. The format also lets the video flow naturally and keeps me engaged rather than it feeling like a sectioned off review. Commenting 4 da algorithm, good video
Just now playing this game for the first time even though I’ve known about it for a while and so far it’s been so great it’s such a cool idea. I’ll finish the video once I’m done with the game but I’m glad to see people still talking about it
That was a really good review. Really, excellent video. By the way, I'm also one of those that think the Perfect Chronology content was "too perfect". Just want to add that I think that RH:PC has some of the best English voice acting I've heard in a JRPG. They did some tremendous work there.
True! I actually had a rant that got cut from this script about how pretty much this whole cast is hardened pros who all have a ton of anime and games under their belt.
I wish you didn't tell me I DESERVED those Doritos... I dropped a Costco sized bag on the ground and well... I couldn't exactly let it go to waste! I deserve it!
Radiant Historia was something I never even knew existed for the DS - so when it was rereleased on the 3DS, I wasn't thrilled with the old DS style graphics and initially didn't think of buying it. But eventually, one day, I was bored and was like "fuck it, guess I'll give it a shot since the reviews seem good" and was pleasantly surprised. It was by no means the perfect video game, but the music was great, the story was well written and the additions made to the 3DS version feels like a nicely wrapped bow on top of an already great game. I saw some older fans critique the new ending, but personally I'm a sucker for having a happy 'true' ending.
It's me. I have an allergy to conveniently happy endings. Thanks for covering this one. I picked it up on the DS a long time ago, but the random battles being so... meaty... turned me off, though I loved the concept and plot. Great stuff as always, Cody.
hello pretty cody, just leaving a comment for the algorithm, and to say that this was a fun watch. i only vaguely remembered radiant historia as "one of those jrpgs with weird titles while i was busy playing borderlands or some shit" and never really considered it. now that im more into jrpgs its cool to go back and look at some of the ones that flew right under my nose. appreciate the work that went into this behemoth
This game makes me happy in ways I don't even have words for. The English language isn't robust enough to capture the sentiment in mere consonants and vowels.
I ended up stopping with the original on the DS. When the new version was put out, I saw the QoL and art upgrades and jumped on it. It still took time, but I did beat it eventually. I think the additions made it a much easier/pleasurable experience. But it's easily one of the best 3DS RPGs and I loved it in the end, despite needing some help from guides later in the game. I also agree with the combat comments in that it can be annoying to HAVE TO pay more attention to even the most minor encounters. It has that in common with the likes of Octopath Traveler, where you have to be massively overleveled to ignore an enemies weaknessess and not exploit the mechanics.
Took me ages to actually get to watching this, but wanted to because Radiant Historia is my favorite game of all time. I acknowledge it's far from perfect with some notable issues, but it just really spoke to me with its puzzle-like combat, general story tone, and lack of missables thanks to the time travel. I honestly prefer how the original ended over the remaster, as I felt like the game had a good tone of just doing what you can in one lifetime, even if it doesn't magically fix everything, especially with certain sidequests that have endings that show there's hope to fix the desertification. The remaster I'd really consider a sidegrade, as it improved on certain aspects like having your back party be able to do things in battle as well as the extra facial expressions, even if I prefer the original art (and I love the bedroom eyes Sonja gets when she's ready to upgrade Rosch's Gauntlet). That said, the story pacing I feel suffered a bit in the end even in perfect mode, with finishing the original final boss just going into Teo telling you "Hey, could you do better to fix the problem?" It's also the first time I can ever say that a piece of fanservice DLC broke the balance of the game in various respects. The use of Mana Crystals to restore your health/SP at save points was completely broken by just going to dip in the springs fully healing you INCLUDING the Mana Gauge, so it was not really a matter of conserving resources as you were going through dungeons/field sections, as every save point was a free full heal. That said, I think it's my favorite iteration of a fanservice DLC I've ever seen, since Stocke is just THE BEST RPG PROTAG OF ALL TIME and the DLC plays it super well for him, staying professional. Not only does it give you some extra dialogue between Stocke and every character, it doesn't follow basically any anime tropes for hot springs scenes: No girls yelling at him for peeping and slapping him, no embarrassment and stumbling over words, NONE OF IT. It's just Stocke being super chill with whomever he's bathing with and having a nice conversation. Radiant Historia might not be a perfect game, but it still stands as my favorite game that I'm always happy to return to. I may prefer the overall tone of the original, but the remaster adds some nice extra worldbuilding and character interactions (even if some of it is sadly locked behind the extinct eShop). I have not yet seen an RPG protagonist that appeals to me like Stocke does; he and Aht are the best characters in the game. Radiant Historia is a recommendation I'd give to anyone, regardless of which version they'd play.
Nice retrospective! Here's hoping they do port it to the Switch, because you've got me interested in trying it. And also, if you do end up 2 for 2 at predicting game comebacks, then I have a few games I may need you to work your precognitive magic on. 😂
I actually have both versions of Radiant Historia. I got the original from a GameStop back when they sold loose DS games, then I got the 3DS version from a Best Buy. I love this game (both versions) and I think you did the game and story justice!
I should really finish this game again some time. I've gone back a few times, but I only ever get a few hours in before I drop it. But it's one of my favorite games that I can think of, because I am a sucker for time travel and using information from one time to solve a problem in another.
If you had handheld systems there was never a Sonic dark are, there was never a Castlevania dark age, there was never a Mega Man dark age and most importantly the so called JRPG dark age of the late 2000s/early 2010s never happened.
New art for me. If for no other reason than having portraits for multiple moods. That honestly made me stop playing the original release; what's the point of portraits if a character always wears the same expression? And the sprite work wasn't very animated either, making vital scenes feel dull and lifeless. While the new art doesn't have quite the same sense of style, it at least helps convey emotion better, which to me is 100x more important.

Well, happy to help provide a niche video on the subject haha.
Definitely underrated

You live! Very excited to see this in my feed.
I do! I am still legally alive.
Can't wait to watch this, I still have a copy of the game on my old 3ds and play it from time to time. I really like the combat system
I wish this would get a rerelease or port to PC , I played this years ago and would love to revisit it.

Haha, I respect that. It's *very* happy. And yes, thanks to the grid even trash mobs can end up taking a bit.
Oh fuck yes. I played this game as a kid, loved it, to and now there's a 2 hour long retrospective on it? Count me in omg.
5 seconds in and I already know it was worth the wait.
I realy like ur chilled style... :)
I also like that Stocke walks a bit weird, cause, I am a "walking a bit wierd" myself 😅
I'd give my life for triangle hat frog
And he'd gladly give his life for you
Nice Intro, i like the the music choice
Glad youtube recommended your channel. Love the vibe.
thank you, Jamesssssssssssssss (did I get the right number of S's?) - glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully it won't be a half year before I make another.

Underrated AF game. Will definitely sub for more!
Squishy men! Squishy men!!
Personally one of my favorite games of all time. Have the original and the remake and replay em every once in a bit. Looking forward to this.

This is a beautiful game; thanks for covering it!
hey thanks! hope you enjoyed it. thanks for watching
Oh hey you posted a new video. What a near suprises
Yep. Couldn't blame you if you thought I had vanished. But I yet live!
I just found this game this year and loved it!
It holds up! I hope they port it to something modern someday so more people can enjoy it.
@@prettycody it deserves that. Really great video, best one on the game I’ve seen
Well, I am pretty sure I know what is winning best documentary at Cannes this year.
A PrettyCody drop is always a treat! They ARE required viewing, actually.
I just started the video but I wanted to comment because Radiant Historia is just one of my favorite RPGs of all time.
I hope you like it! but if you don't finish please know I also think this game is awesome haha.
i turned into that sicko meme seeing this hit my subscription feed

I think it took me 3 good tries to finally beat it, so I feel that.
I got a stupid big collection of gunpla, particularly Pg gunplas.
Been too long glad u didn't quit😊
Hope you enjoy the video. I'm still kicking 😎 my next video (probably) won't take 5 months (maybe)
Back in the day when I was a bigger jrpg fan. A lot of people hype this up but I never jumped on for some reason
haha, well if the sales are an indicator you aren't alone.
All this stuff seems pretty shady and- ahhhh Atlus, yeah that tracks :)
WOOT WOOT
Best JRPG out there not called Final fantasy 9, Xenogears or Xenoblade chronicles 1/3

Brb pausing the video to go watch Unico

I don’t know if I’ll ever get over 3DS’s huge portrait art downgrade. It personally offends me 😂
r u gonna make a dark souls retrospective?? no one plays these jrpgs but that would be really cool
