Hello Synful Blaq TV ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Hartwall Arena, in Helsinki, Finland in 2005, then together with their 1st female singer, Tarja Turunen. This was also her last concert with the band, she was fired by the other members at the end of the show, with an open letter. Bitter-sweet memories..
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals) - you just heard her. She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Guys, don't worry about the dislikes, they are put on by new Floor fans (the current singer) because they don't like Tarja (the singer of this song) even though I think she's wonderful. those fans say this is the wrong version but it is the original version. they always do the same is any reaction from Tarja. This show was Tarja's last (year 2005) and I recommend slaying the dreamer, planet hell, the phantom of the opera, the siren or the whole show haha. Tarja has had her solo career since 2005 and she has many CDs, I recommend: supremacy (cover of Muse) or victim of ritual (Woodstock). she has beautiful top notes. Yeah, Tarja's performance on Woodstock was amazing, full concert from that festival is amazing, and that was in my country, Poland. :) Good to hear (or read) that someone prefer Nightwish era with Tarja. ;)
Oh, Melisa... Did you even listen to this version, though? Not the studio mastered one where Tarja is forced into the timestamps designed by Tuomas to sound right, but this live one? She misses the music by noticeably long, she forces the guys to slow down/prolong notes because she stretches her notes, she is being a diva, plain and simple. Sorry. Tarja's good. In studio. But Floor is good both in studio and live.

I didn't say she forces anything. That she is somehow lacking or worse. She IS skilled.
I said she doesn't keep to the original timing when performing live and thus makes other band members play catch up with her.
She sings slower than the song was written/gives additional flourishes in her performance, making it artistically more complex/pleasing, but also messing with the timing of how the song was written.
The rest of the band has to adjust to her. Slow down, because she chose to sing more artistically and is now off-rhythm by half a second to a second.
As a drummer(the rhythmic section in any band, along with the bass, making sure the rest of the band keeps in rhythm and the song doesn't fall apart) I feel that in my bones every single time.
Do you know how much trouble it is to play something at the same speed 100 times only to have to adjust or pause at the concert? It isn't playing the drums when you play something over and over again. It's muscle memory. Having to adjust/pause is uncomfortable as heck. And Nightwish plays with background tracks for strings, choir, etc, which makes it even more of a hassle.
In the studio, they can do retake after retake, fix things in post, etc. In studio, Tarja is brilliant. She just has a bit of a problem keeping with the rhythm/speed of a song when performing it live. That's all I'm saying.
Doesn't make her a bad singer, just not one made for live performances unless the rest of the band is very forgiving/skilled at playing to the vocalist's tempo/flourishes.
And hey... At least we can agree Annette Olzon is the worst of the three. :P
@@LongandWeirdName Is that why their last two album have been the worst critically received albums of their career and the worst two selling albums by Nightwish? LOL Compared to Floor, Nightwish was better with Anette. Their albums/concerts sold more with Anette compared to pop princess Floor.

Agreed, as much as I love Floor and the "other" rendition of the song this kind of numbskullery goes in the same category as "you must do your homework" on that one song we all know. It's almost as if some people can not deal with a spontaneous reaction or a reaction that is not within expectation.

It doesn't matter to me which version reactors pick, as long as they are intrigued enough to continue listening after just one song.
The End of an Era and Once lineup was Nightwish at their prime. It's symphonic metal that set precedent for so many bands you listen to today. Even Floor Jansen was inspired by Tarja and her vocals to get into metal. They had a unique sound and Tuomas was able to utilize Tarja's vocals as another instrument. Her voice also sounded amazing with Marko. Today, Nightwish is less about the band itself and more about their pop lead singer and it's actually sad.

You just saw Nightwish’s first singer, Tarja Turunen. She was with them until 2005. In fact, this performance came from her very last Nightwish show. I think I sent you a link when I first recommended Nightwish. It’s for a video of the same song, but sung in 2013 by their third and current singer, Floor Jansen. I would highly recommend watching that one too. And watch other songs by them while you're at it, as none of their songs are alike. They'll give you something new every time!

@@jaanahedemaki6993 Hi Jaana. I have asked people to react to Tarja or Anette. But if they've never heard Nightwish before, I usually ask for Ghost Love Score or Romanticide with Floor. In my opinion, starting with the current singer is a great way to get to know them. But I don't have a problem with starting at the beginning, with Tarja, either. To me, the most important thing is that they discover Nightwish. In whatever order they choose to.

At least you manage to stay respectful about the band even though your priority is the Floor era and Wacken. I think the reaction scene has slowed down. It would be interesting to see how many of those reactors actually became a fan IRL.This reaction scene doesn't really say anything.Reactors are ofcourse in it for themselves and for their channel and react to whatever seems to benefit them most.What Nightwish benefits from them, the jury is still out there on that one. There are no facts about that one. But reactors sure make the most of the fans: Putting up patreons and merch and live chat with donations in no time.Especially when their channel grows. A reaction scene is just a "bubble." I'd say rather easy way for a person to gain interest to their channel. I wouldn't put too much importance to it as what it says about Nightwish's popularity.It sure is entertaining at times.And other times I wish there's be more Nightwish fans and less fanatics. @@jaanahedemaki6993 I agree with you when it comes to those reactors who are only in it for the views. I try and be mindful about those. I don't care about patreons and stuff, I just try to get people to really listen to Nightwish. You never know who watches the videos. There are lots of 'silent' viewers. They might be touched by their music. I can also give you examples of quite a number of reactors who really dig into their discography and plan to visit shows. Those are the ones I stay in touch with. My only intention is to spread the word about this great band. That can't be bad, can it?

Welcome to the first era of Nightwish! 😁 Tarja, the woman you just heard, is the first vocalist and one of the founding members of the group, wich was born in 1996. Of the band's 9 studio albums, 5 were recorded with her, 2 with Anette and 2 with Floor, the current singer. Most of the songs people suggest in Floor's voice were not originally recorded by her, so it would be nice if in addition to the newer versions you also heard the originals. Each song sounds completely different depending on who is singing. Nightwish initially proposed to have a lyrical singer as a vocalist. That was the identity and the big difference of the band in the past, however, from the second vocalist that changed. The band also went through other member changes.The drummer was changed once and the bassist twice. Tarja left the band in 2005, before google buys TH-cam. Most of the live performances from her time were posted by fans. The performance you just watched is from the "End of an era" dvd ( th-cam.com/play/PLexzLA11Cst25qKz-jqq513Dr02I2jG4q.html ). This entire DVD is incredible. It was recorded in 2005. A next suggestion from this same show might be "The Phantom of the Opera" ( th-cam.com/video/tL25rbnvM4o/w-d-xo.html ). For me, it's one of the best Nightwish performances to date. A curiosity about this show is that Tarja hardly did it. She was sick that day and recorded this show on medication. You can usually find good videos with Tarja on the "Nightwish Arena" channel. As for Anette, I advise you to always listen to the studio versions of her. Live videos are not usually very good with Anette, but she has a very beautiful voice. Floor joined Nightwish in 2012 as a temporary member and became permanent in 2013. It is easy to find good live performances with her. Many of these videos were posted by the band itself. In general the Nightwish live performances are magical, but the studio versions are also excellent. In addition, there are some iconic songs that you will not find live version or, when you do, the quality of the recording is terrible. An example of this is "Beauty of the beast" (th-cam.com/video/lwerko8X_aU/w-d-xo.html). This is a song from "Century Child" album. So far only Tarja has sung it. There is a live version, but the quality of the existing videos is very bad, even in the remastered ones. This can ruin your first experience. Because of that, I strongly suggest the studio version as the first experience. If you like to enjoy the lyrics of the songs, "Beauty of the beast" has a romantic gothic style. Nightwish had a different style in Tarja's time. Originally the band was a mix of Gothic metal, power metal, symphonic music and folk music. From Anette on, the influences of power metal and gothic metal are almost nonexistent. It is important not to confuse "Beauty OF the beast" with "Beauty AND the beast". Nightwish has these two songs. In case you want to know, there is a good live version of "Beauty AND the beast" recorded on the dvd "From wishes to eternity" (th-cam.com/video/v8vA260-AOU/w-d-xo.html). This is the band's first DVD. It was recorded in 2000 and released in 2001. It is a much simpler DVD than the ones Nightwish makes today, but it is excellent. At the beginning of their career the band did not have many financial or technical resources. This is a 21-year-old recording. At the time the group was on their third album, "Wishmaster", and they had done their first world tour. Tarja has a solo career with many iconic performances and partnerships. I would like to suggest "Victim of ritual", a live performance recorded at Woodstock in 2016 (th-cam.com/video/GxDnhbGTJSs/w-d-xo.html). If you prefer something quieter, I suggest the song "The Living End", a live performance recorded in a church in Wacken. In this performance, Tarja is accompanied only by a piano, a violin and a cello. It's beautiful. There is a video of this performance on Wacken TV channel. She's being a diva, missing the music by miles (the worst was almost 2 seconds past where the studio version has her begin), stretches notes so much the guys actually have to accommodate for it and not start the next section of the song, because she's not done singing that note, because "look what my perfect opera trained vocals can do"... This is quite frankly worse than Annette attempting GLS. Sorry. Your opinion is wrong. In my opinion. Tarja was not at her best here. And disrespectful to Tuomas' work.

LOL Well, I prefer this version and this vocalist. After all, she is the founding member of Nightwish and many of the songs you hear today sung by current one are written for her.
I was laughing when you noticed this was not something you expected - obviously you were looking for NW with the current vocalist.
The expectation wasn't really the current vocalist since they are new to the band as stated at the beginning of the reaction. Most people who react to this song -- regardless of the vocalist -- do not expect the type of vocal coloring used in combination with this style of music.

I can see you're Tarja fans. As a Floor fan, I urge you to compare them both to studio versions of the songs. You know. The versions of the songs where everything is as the composer wanted it to be?
Tarja misses the mark more often than not. Don't get me wrong. I love her range. I am in awe of her voice. She IS great... In studio. But during concerts? She just can't hack it.
Quite honestly, she often makes me think of an old Thomas "Tomska" Ridgewell sketch called Delayed Reaction when I hear her live.
Floor, on the other hand, stays true to how Tuomas wrote the pieces and gives a bonus of being more versatile than just Opera. Something I don't see Tarja doing too often.

welcome guys, this is Tarja the most operatic singer. but since 2013 they have had their third singer, Floor Jansen, who is considered by all but the diehard early Nightwish fans to be their best singer as she can sing in any genres and with more empathy. Usually when someone suggests this song it is with third singer at Wacken 2013 with a crowd of 82.000.

Tarja was with them 1996-2005.They released 5 albums with her. Anette was with them 2007-2012.They released 2 albums.Floor has been with them about 9 years and they have managed to release 2 albums. Their tour schedule has also been more hectic in the past.They take longer breaks now and bigger venues.Obviously I don't know how much other work Floor has done with them than records to make her superior to Tarja and Anette. But I'm not a fanatic so my brain lacks that logic.You are not in touch with the the band if you put one member to the pedestal above the rest. A band isn't a solo project.

I can't get over how Tarja fanatics say this is the superior version. Listen to the Floor version. Wacken, Buenos Aires, whatever. See how much better she hits the musical marks. How much Tarja makes mistakes and comes in about a second late a third of the time. It's like Tarja doesn't even hear the music or doesn't understand how songs work. If you know the song, you can hear how much the guys have to accommodate her slow, careless delivery.
Im glad you guys heard this first. Now, compare it to Floor's version and you tell us who is the superior vocalist is, please.
This is superior because it's the original with their original line up... This is Nightwish at their prime. Floor's cover is just a cover and it's okay.

2. You decided to answer it. After a year of nobody answering it.
3. You made two very stupid assumptions. You assumed that:
A)the original is always better than the cover. I mean... Have you heard the Prince version of Nothing Compares 2 U? Or the Dolly Parton version of I Will Always Love You? Yeah... The cover can be better than the original.
and
B) That the Floor version is a cover at all. The author of the lyrics and the composer of the song is still in the band.
Metallica didn't stop being Metallica when Dave Mustaine stopped being lead guitarist and left the band to go from playing thrash with Metallica to playing trash with Megadeth. They began when he was replaced by Kirk Hammett.
The rights to the song stick with the author. And that, in the case of GLC would be... Tuomas Holopainen, who, last I checked... Isn't Tarja Turunen.
The new drummer, Vlad Ulasevich, breathed a new life into Jinjer as a band. He changed them. His drumming style made them all adapt to him. Jinjer with Vlad is not the same Jinjer as Jinjer with Dmytro or Yevhen.
So... As you see... A new band member can be a good thing. I know... It can also be a bad thing, like... Mike the First(Portnoy) being replaced by Mike the Second(Mangini) as the Dream Theater drummer. Made them suck for a whole few albums before they reconnected to what made them good...
But with Floor? Yeah. Nightwish is better with her.
Most definitely better than with The Third Olsen Twin. Annie was not okay. Bye bye and good riddance, beautiful. They had to turn pop to accommodate her lack of skill. Floor brought them back.
Is she better than Tarja? Well... That's a much tougher question.
In studio, Tarja had and still has no equals. She is a brilliant vocalist. But live? She was off timing. Made unnecessary flourishes that messed with the flow of the song. Forced the band to slow down and gave the background music technician that played the parts that the band couldn't play live a lot of work adjusting to the new rhythm.
Floor, on the other hand, even when she sang something differently, kept it in check with the rest of the song.
Floor is also a lot more versatile as a vocalist. I'm not calling Tarja an opera one trick pony, but... Floor does it all. From growling to opera. From rock to folk.
Face it. Floor is a good fit for Nightwish.
Stop fanboying for Tarja and take an objective look at things.
