Now those tips were golden nuggets. I am wondering is this the secret behind when they say a drummer has a swing feel? I find most straight on beats very boring after awhile that some drummers play while other drummers can play the same beat and it sounds very fresh and interesting. Is this the secret as well or do you have tips for that and a demonstration? Rock And Roll by Led Zeppelin is a case in point. I have seen many cover bands do it and the beat seems too on the nose or something where as the original is so exciting and vibrant. Thanks from Canada!!!!

I can tell that you know what a swing feel sounds like! This is very big topic. I'm a big fan of the drummers from eras past. When rock and roll started the drummers were jazz drummers playing the rock and roll. Even if you listen to the popular rock drummers in the 60's and 70's like Mitch Michell and Ginger Baker they play with certain amount of swing in their grooves. Ringo and John Bonham also play with a bit of swing in their grooves. I'm also a fan of New Orleans funk drumming which is also played with a certain amount of swing or 'bent' rhythm. I'll think about doing a some videos on this topic. It really can make the music feel alive!

I would like to thank Mr. Lombardi for doing this, and I would also thank Mr. Lombardi for mentioning John Ferraro.

He's consistant with the advice about using a metronome. In 1981 he did a clinic at a music store in north Orange County (Garden Grove I believe), and that was his advice. I remember that, plus someone asked him about traditional grip vs. match grip. He prefered match grip because it's more natural. While holding the stick in his left hand with the traditional style, and moving it up and down he said, "You'd never hold a hammer like this."
