  • How drone operators could estimate the weight of a decoy by just looking at it, why Russians build fake camps of theatrical proportions that are extremely easy to spot by Ukrainians, how candles were used to trick the enemy into wasting their ammunition, and why Russian decoy tanks are nicknamed Rubber Product #2, is #NotWhatYouThink #NWYT

Now using mostly intact but otherwise non-functional/unrepairable equipment as decoys is a damned good idea. A bit of welding, some paint, and some weathering, and it will look like its operational.
Example: shell of a tank with internals/engine removed. used anti-tank tubes on faked emplacements, etc.

The first time decoys made a massive change was during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. Back then, wood models of airplanes were made in 1:1 scale, painted with original paint (MiG-29) and the engine "exhaust" was made of one metal barrel cut in two. Also, the wooden model would be padded with tinfoil and fires would be burnt in cut barrels at the back. That way, it would have both radar and heat radiation making it pretty much impossible to see as a decoy. Also, false radar positions with fake radiation sources were made in order to divert HARM missiles from real ones. And so on...

I don’t think I’ve ever seen decoys in pop culture. Like I can’t think of a single movie or game that uses decoys (in any realistic ways). Only one Incan think of is Mirage from Apex legends, but when it comes to vehicles the closest I can think of are decoy mechanics, like ”enemy units will target this other shielded unit first”, but rarely if ever have I seen a war game with inflatable decoys.

I bet barn or turtle tanks that Russia uses now will be moving inflatable or wooden decoys with real metal sheets on top of it.
Just imagine a huge number of that decoys that nobody can tell if it's real or not crossing the frontline and covering real tanks, IFVs, APCs and so on.
That will be the future of decoys.

I would think inflatable decoys don't work nowadays because they are very obvious when looked at with a thermal camera (just a huge blob same temperature all around, pretty fake).
I guess there are not enough thermal cameras around then.
