In this video to celebrate 100 years of 270 Winchester I show you the best powders to get the best accuracy with the lowest ES. Hope you enjoy the video!
For sure H4350. After trying literally dozens of loads and I don't know how many powders, I found H4350 to be a sweet spot in my 270 with 140 grain bullets. It also worked well with 100 grain bullets, I was getting over 3300 fps with H4350 and 100 grain Accubonds. Thanks for your informational videos.
I've got 2 270s and I've tried several powders but have settled on RL16 as it has given me the best velocity and accuracy. When I run out and can't find any I'll be switching to H4350. The load I'm currently shooting with NO pressure signs at all is RL16 58.8gns CCI 200, 140 Berger VLD Hunting bullet, Hornady brass, MV 3175fps and half MOA groups out to 500yds. It has been a hammer on whitetails!!
I handload 140gr Hornady interlocks for my sons Remington 270 SPS. It shoots IMR4350 less than half MOA. My wife bought an older Sako .270 with a laminate stock. I was talking to myself trying to get it to shoot 140gr . 3 inches at 100 was unacceptable. A gent at the range said Tikka and Sako that he owned 5 of each will not shoot 140gr. He said by a box of 130gr anything and shoot it. Hornady Whitetail 130 gr one hole group under a dime at 100yds for 3 shots. She also did the same on her moose yr ago Oct.
@ That is all interesting, thanks for sharing. My Tikka 270 loves 140s and anything lighter. It does not like 150s. I think it is twist rate. I don't think most 270s like anything more than 140s if the twist is 1:10.
The 270 Win is so versatile with so many bullets to choose from there is no best powder but tons of excellent ones. First cartridge I ever handloaded starting in the mid-late 80s. IMR and Hodgdon 4350, IMR and Hodgdon 4831 and 4831SC, VVN165, Superformance, Reloder 19, 22, AA3100, Winchester 760/H414. For 300 yards and in, without question, 59.5 grains Superformance and a 129LRX or 130 TTSX at 3325 to 3360 fps 24" barrels even if groups are 6" at that distance, who cares. Luckily my rifles love it. Yes, sir, it's my opinion that the 270-cal or 270-win is my all-time all-around favorite caliber/cartridge. Next to the 270-WBY, 270-WSM, 6.8-Western, 277-Fury and 27-Nosler, among a few other wildcats. You have bullets from 85-180gr thanks to companies like Hammer and a few others. I Ackley improved my 270-WIN-AI 26in 9 twist barrel. I couldn't believe it ran neck & neck with my dad's 270-WBY WoW . The 270/277-cal it one of the most versatile calibers on the market next to 30-cal, which has bullet weights from 110-250gr. The 270-cal with a 170-180gr bullets has a higher ballistic coefficients than the 7mm/284-cal 170-180gr bullets . Look it up.That's why it's my opinion that the 270-cal is superior over 7mm-cal. Don't get me wrong, I love 284-cal. With all the new bullets on the market today for 270-cal. Thank you for sharing the information and the announcement of the 100 Year Anniversary of the 270-WIN. Who tee who sent me to your channel. Your loads for his 300 weatherby mag had amazing groups. I'm look forward to watching your videos. I want to learn how to reload and find out what I need to get started
In 270 I was always a 130 gr guy 56 g imr 4350 we had 4 different rifles all shot under a inch and fps way up there 22 inch barrel 3160 , 1 g over max in nosler but old barns load data called for the 56 new one 55 g I called and they said they backed it off because of older rifles but it's find to use in newer , we had zero pressure signs , 130 gr accubond or ttsx deadly, I am not a heavy for cal guy I want a 180 in a 7mm mag I take 30 cal mag lol great video as always and I am interested in trying that N powder!!
Give it a whirl, my daughters 270 loves tubal 8000, rifle is a 24 inch winchester model 70 sporter, only powder we use in it any more for 110s up to 160s, great video Austin, keep them coming
nice video. I just started reloading .270 late last year. I'm currently using H4350. I was using Hornady SST and the Hornady reloading data app. Haven't fired any of them yet but i hope they're good hah.
Going out soon to answer this question myself. I don't have access to these programs so it's the old school way for me. I have ladder test for bullets from 116gr to 170gr. Powders will range from Varget to Ramshot Magnum. Have a new fast twist Browning X-Bolt and being near sea level this should be an interesting project. Thanks for the information you are providing. I don't have some of the powders you listed but will be checking them out. 🤔😉
Have you tried staball 6.5 in your 270 or checked the data with GRT? It's really impressive in my 24-inch barrel shooting 128 and 130 gr. Bullets. Getting 3200+ fps was very easy with zero pressure signs. Did you ever check r19 as it should also be good, but it's not considered very temp stable. N550 is great, but a tad fast burning for heavy bullets. N555 could prove to be a good powder, too. R17 is similar to n550 and would give fast speeds with a 130 gr, but it's not available now. N160 is probably ideal as you showed, with the heavy bullets. I have used it in a 243 Ackley improved with a 109 berger but never in my 270. Thanks for sharing the data for the 100-year 270 win anniversary. It was my father's main hunting rifle.
You’re on to something here. Forget velocity, in my experience for consistency, you want to use the optimal powder for the chosen projectile and barrel/cartridge volume. It should fill the case and just burnout as the projectile exits the muzzle. If that doesn’t produce the velocity you’re after then perhaps it’s not the right combination! 🤓
That's a LOT of data, and most people find it boring.... What I have noticed ALL Magnums, 2700-3500 fps, only have ABOUT 6-10" difference in drop up to 500 yards. Zero your rifle for 100 yards, LEARN your drops, ... At 500 yards, aim about 12" over your bucks back. And you will kill him. PRETTY much regardless of what your shooting. Even a 30-06 with a 180 in it. People like to over complicate shooting.
@eduardoolaechea maximum point blank range is only what, 300 yds? I guess it would depend where you're shooting? Also depends if you have one of them fancy dial-up scopes? How far away do you NORMALLY kill deer? How far is the farthest you ever killed deer? Do you go for head shots or body shots? All these you need to think about and adjust your situation accordingly. On my 270 WSM, I get sub moa groups with a 130 grain Nosler partition shooting 3300 fps, and have it 1" high at 100 yards. In 2022, I shot a huge mule buck "trotting" at 440 yards, I ASSUMED it was 500 yards, aimed about 12-16" over his back. And shot him, I took his heart out. That WORKS for me, your mileage may vary. In 2024, my elk rifle wasn't sighted in on opening day, we were looking for a place to camp, we cut elk tracks, my brother handed me his "spair rifle" savage 110 in 30-06, loaded with 180 partitions, he told me it was zeroed at 100 yards.... 40 minutes later, I saw a 5 pt bull elk, again I assumed 400-500 yards, aimed (off hand) about 6-8" over his back, the bull was standing still, perfect broadside. I hit him through the heart. -- with a rifle I never shot before and shooting offhand. (Lot of luck, but, knowing drop is everything). IF you know your drops, it doesn't matter that you sight your rifle in for. AT LEAST that's my experience. Yours may vary. Most MAGNUM rifles only have a FEW inches difference in drop at 500 yards. Kinda crazy to look up.
@@jwdundon Normally between 100 and 200 yards. Always try to get as close as possible. Furthest shot I’ve taken was back in 2016. Prone position at 450 yards using a 130-grain factory load sighted some 2” high at 100 yards leaving the muzzle at about 2950 fps. The buck was alert and standing broadside down a basin, the terrain wouldn’t allow me getting closer so I held the crosshairs about 20 inches over the boiling room (no fancy turrets) and took the shot. Wind deviated the bullet, striking base of the backbone just below the hind quarter so I had to take a second shot closer... Currently carrying a 300 Win mag sighted 3” high at 100 yards right now sighted for the 150-grain bullet MV 3200 fps. It extends MPBR in some 30 yards which isn’t much, and according to ballistic tables drops 6” less than the .270 win at 500 yards. But it is also a heavier rifle and has a longer barrel, which I find burdensome when crossing some ridges or crouching through bushes. But for some reason it is my go-to rifle nowadays. Thinking about stepping up to heavier bullets just to buck wind better.
@eduardoolaechea I really enjoyed reading your hunting story. (We would have a great time, drinking coffee, over a campfire). If your a hand loader, LOOK into the 270 WSM. I only have 3+1 rounds, but, it gets me ALMOST 3400 fps. It LOVES Max loads of imr4350, and Max loads of Staball 6.5 (sub moa on both). It will give you the MAGNUM power, but for less weight. -- I guess you could buy the new 6.8 western, but, I don't see any advantage untill your shooting 600 yards plus. BUT, you MUST be a hand loader, if your not, stick with the 270 and 300! (Odd stuff is too pricey for sure). On a side note, my brother bought a 26 Nosler, with a FANCY dial scope... Last fall, he loaned me his 30-06, since he had this new fancy rifle. He saw a 5x5 bull elk, at 450 yards, DIALED it, then aimed high and missed... The bullet ran towards me, turned, I knew the drop, held over and put a hole about the size of a Costco hot dog through his heart. (He shuttered, and HUNCHED UP, I ASSUMED I gut shot him). But, when I got to him, he was dead. My brother's $1500.00 scope and $2000.00 rifle was too complex. Or ???? He didn't dial it right. I just held over with a $300.00 rifle and a 300.00 scope.... (I think you woulda made the same shot with your 270).
I inherited some handloads from a Fud who used IMR4350 under 130gr and IMR 4831 under 150gr swift boatails. Velocity was anemic for the 130 and about book spec for the 150, but accuracy was very good. I’ve been playing with Stabal 6.5 with 141gr Hammers, awesome accuracy at 2950ish from a 24” tube. Into no this is a good power for 270.
Your Choice on shooting it or not. I've always faired better with IMRs over Hodgdon of same #. I did like H4350 in 7x57 though easier to load it into the cases. I do have a ? The High BC bullets which all have you tried in your 270 n are you sure its 1:10 twist ? Hears that Browning Winchester had changed there to faster twist or were going to Thanks.
My rifle with 130 gr. bullets needs to look for nothing but H 4831SC, it is by far the best for mine, and I've tried a lot of different powders and gr. weights. Nothing else gave 1/2" groups at 100 yards off bags of course. Now at 70 it shoots better than I can. getting old sucks
If you can get Norma powders also try the URP with light bullets and MRP with heavier ones. The 140 grain bullet marks the changeover between these 2 powders. More often it's the URP but in some cases is the MRP. The N570 it's a bit too much for me. I think the N165 is a better choice for the 165 grain ABLR but a 24" barrel would be an almost necessary requirement to get the best out of it. Last but not least, while the N500 series has more energy and, on average, results in higher velocity (if the combination is right), the N100 is cleaner and is a better choice for consistent accuracy. That's my experience.
Berger 150gr VLD Hunter with 52.4gr of N550 gets 2,970fps, an ES of 5.0 and an SD of 1.8 in a Bergara 270 w/24" barrel zero'd at 200yds. Holds 1,900 fps out to 700yds. Gotta love the 270 performance and very reasonable recoil especially with a brake on it. Hammers all day long...
So I have watched little crow gunwerks video and yours. Thank you for helping me with your loading videos. So I am looking at grt and it seems to me that the PSI pressure is low. For Example My 300 weatherby according to Sammi is rated for 65,000 psi. And on GRT the PSI is listed at 63817 psi. So , do you change it? I have been changing it to match what sammi rates the cartridge.
Thank you! May I please ask one more question, how accurate have you noticed is the Load ratio percentage. And what range should I be looking for? For example 95%-100%? Anyway thank you
Interesting 🤔 I’m not a huge fan of the 270win but the numbers don’t lie hey, reckon when you have a spare minute you could run a few numbers in GRT for my 6.5-284?
I do think GRT favors Vit powders. The claimed model strength is max for most of their powders. I wonder if some of the heartburn the program gives for Hodgdon extreme is because the models don’t predict burn rate well and tend to skew low on the burnt propellant. I can attest that their Benchmark numbers seem way off for load density and burnt propellant. It thinks a load I run is at like 114% and has like 96% burn rate. It’s not noticeably compressed when loading or when eyeballing bullet seat depth vs height of powder column. I can model N135 (slower powder) and it gets to 100% burn at significantly lower pressures. Just some food for thought. You’re a large enough channel now that it’s probably worth purchasing quick load and doing some sanity checking. It would also be nice to just do load comparisons between the two to show the audience what they get for ponying up for the non-free program.
I just worry that GRT is becoming too accepted despite the model strength of a lot of powders being mid to low. I don’t want you to unintentionally be putting out somewhat bad info because you’re relying too heavily on a single program when there’s another option to use as a counterbalance. If you have match master powder dispenser and mark V money, then you have quikload money considering how much load modeling content you’re putting out there recently.
The sooner you recognize the awesome power of GRT the better! I'm kidding... GRT does get things wrong. I use it a lot because it's the only thing that matches almost perfectly with my Weatherby cartridges. The reloading books are laughably off.
I’d still say it’s worth pirchasing quikload and comparing their data to GRT. I don’t necessarily trust the GRT models for several powders, with the Hodgdon extreme line seeming to be problematic except for the two stars in Varget and H4350. 4831SC, Benchmark, and H1000 have much lower propellant burn percentages than the counterparts in their windows and I think cross checking that with Quikload may help clarify the situation.
So just to be clear n160 is the best vihtavuori powder for the 270 or is there another…you talked about 570 as well So what about playing with semi autos …browning bar to be exact Cheers from Canada
Your showing everything at max pressure it looks like to me. I wonder if you back it of a half grain or full grain? The Nosler book I have has H4831 with 130 gr bullets as the most accurate powder tested. It does show the most accurate load with this combination at the lower charge weight. Im assuming as you back off the max pressure your burn percentage starts coming up..??
Well this all looks good on paper. Being a gunsmith and having one slow burning powder 4831 is the best. I run it in 25-06, 270 Win, 30-06, 300WM and 338WM. Since we’re talking 270 Win here, I get 2978 fps with a Hornady 145 ELDX. Most of my barrels are 26” long. From a barrel cleaning standpoint here, 4831 burns cleaner than the rest of them. So for good reason I’ll take what you have to say with a grain of salt.
As I said... H4831SC will work.. but that doesn't make it the best for 270 Win. I'm trying to show people what the best powder is to save them time and money. You don't have to trust me. Go watch a F-class shooter. They will never use a powder that doesn't have 100% burn rate. Only 2978 FPS with H4831SC? You can get better with N550, H4350 and a few others. You should be easily over 3000 FPS
H4831 was great in the JOC days, but there are much better powders for it now. I've shot a lot of different load combos out of four 270s and always found powders that gave better accuracy and velocity. One example is the 130 Trophy Bonded Tip and RL26 that averages 3227 out of a 24" barrel. Another is Ramshot Hunter with the 110TTSX averaging just under 3500 fps out of the same rifle.
I couldn't make out what you called the computer program you are using. Can you please respond as to what ballistics program you are using in the video? Thanks
I'm confused. I have a 270, so thanks for the video. How do you determine the load you were talking about. GRT was showing over pressure don't use. Is this a load you work up to or just look for burn rate and go with a load that gives you what you're looking for?
I’m working on a load for my 270win in Weatherby Van. My load is 140g. Hornady Interlock over Hybrid 100V. I am getting good results so far with just over .5 MOA groups and just a touch over 3000fps. I’m not sure why Hybrid 100V doesn’t get talked about more often. I use it in my .338wm and my .243win. Seems quite versatile, fills cases, good velocity and accuracy. It’s not an extreme powder, but it it’s not too bad for temp stability, I don’t think. Curious what you think about Hybrid 100V?
Thank you for the response. I’m glad to hear I’m on the right track. This percentage of burn rate thing is new to me. I will have to investigate further
Im getting similar results with 140g Interlocks and 140g partitions with Hybrid 100V out of my 270. My 52grain load is averaging 2975fps and sub-MOA out of my old JC Higgins rifle with the partitions.
53.5 grains of 100v is getting me 3006fps. I’m pretty happy with that. It has been a very quick process to find a load for this. Next step is to stretch out down range and see what happens.
I been working with different powders and I tried 4831sc and the accuracy wasn’t there in my rifles imr 4350 gave me a lot better accuracy with 130 grain anyhow now in the 280 AI I built it works better with the 4831sc with 150 grain anyhow now bullets and I did get some Nosler AB long range for it
So you are telling me the load I developed in 1998 for my Rem 700 mountain rifle was not good, even though the 150 ballistic tip was doing 2900 fps, shot 0.6 moa and had an extreme spread off 25 fps and was absolutely devastating on the Himalayan Tahr I built the rifle for
@ that load was with Lee balance scales, basic Winchester brass not annealed and grouped with a barrel as light as any light weight rifle. The only thing was it was probably ex military H4831 instead of the modern SC. As an older generation hunter, the gun, scope, mounts and bedding connection to stock was ten times more important than the load. Now off the shelf accuracy leave only load tuning to improve what is already good.
I got great speed with h4831 sc but my hunting load is imr 4895 with 130 sst ! The accuracy is stupid with it! Bullet hole in bullet hole and consistent
Perfect timing. Been scratching my head a bit with my 270 so now I am going to try H4350 I think. Question though, have a 22" barrel and was trying 130 gr CX bullets. . . . . .any chance you could run that through GRT and post a screenshot? Thank you
@ReloadingWeatherby what is the burn percentage for 55g h4831 with a 130g And why am i getting an es of 5-8 fps and 1/4 moa if i dont have 100% burn 24in barrel btw
@ReloadingWeatherby 2780fps with cheap speer soft points They shoot lights out Ive just started a new loading technique I use two cheap Franklin arsenal scales and cross reference them zeroing between each weighing and getting each charge perfect to the single grain of powder my es,es have dropped significantly and I've even gotten my 7mmrem mag to go from a 1.5in to 1/2in Its really opened my eyes to how much scales can drift over a reloading session I even remeasure my first case after throwing 10 to confirm no drifting. Definitely try it out with a load you have a lot of data on to see how much your sd,s drop
For sure H4350. After trying literally dozens of loads and I don't know how many powders, I found H4350 to be a sweet spot in my 270 with 140 grain bullets. Powders will range from Varget to Ramshot Magnum. Have a new fast twist Browning X-Bolt and being near sea level this should be an interesting project. Thanks for the information you are providing. I don't have some of the powders you listed but will be checking them out. 🤔😉
My .270 really liked RL19 with all bullet weights, but of course it's unobtainium now.
My Marlin bolt loves 130 Schertoco over 55gr H4831sc
I have tried several different powders in 25 years of loading for .270 Win. Every time I find myself going back to and sticking with IMR 4831.
4831 is the best powder there is period it is worthwhile loading lower velocity to use it
You’re on to something here. 🤓
Please include a ballistic comparison between the 130, 150 and 165 grain including drop and wind deflection in your next .270 win video.
@@jwdundon Why would sight at 100 yards if I can take advantage of the cartridge's MPBR?
😂 I Can't Say That I've Tried Them All, But I Want To! 😜
Hears that Browning Winchester had changed there to faster twist or were going to
Thanks.
👍👍. If you feel your rifle can handle it. Go for i. You could always tie a string to it😂😂
My rifle with 130 gr. bullets needs to look for nothing but H 4831SC, it is by far the best for mine, and I've tried a lot of different powders and gr. weights. Nothing else gave 1/2" groups at 100 yards off bags of course. Now at 70 it shoots better than I can. getting old sucks
You try any Vihtavuori powders?
@@ReloadingWeatherby no i haven't I don't have anywhere close to get except online and it cost a small fortune that way, if its in stock
I like H-414 with a CCI-250 primer for 130's, and H-450 for 150gr
N555 works Killer with 130 grain bullets never tried it with any heavier yet.
58gr H4831sc and 140gr accubonds, and 53gr 65 staball with 150gr ABLR both shoot lights out in my 270. I’m liking the extra speed with the staball 65
Can we get a video like this on the trusty 300 weatherby ?
Berger 150gr VLD Hunter with 52.4gr of N550 gets 2,970fps, an ES of 5.0 and an SD of 1.8 in a Bergara 270 w/24" barrel zero'd at 200yds. Holds 1,900 fps out to 700yds. Gotta love the 270 performance and very reasonable recoil especially with a brake on it. Hammers all day long...
Great results! Thanks for sharing
Yes I will change it or just not worry about the over pressure warnings
Thank you! May I please ask one more question, how accurate have you noticed is the Load ratio percentage. And what range should I be looking for? For example 95%-100%? Anyway thank you
Dont forget the 300 H&H 100 years old also
Interesting 🤔 I’m not a huge fan of the 270win but the numbers don’t lie hey, reckon when you have a spare minute you could run a few numbers in GRT for my 6.5-284?
Have you tried Reloader 26 for 270 win? I'm curious what your take on it is.
I haven't.
Hogdon H4350 AKA The holy grail of rifle powders
So just to be clear n160 is the best vihtavuori powder for the 270 or is there another…you talked about 570 as well
So what about playing with semi autos …browning bar to be exact
Cheers from Canada
N160 and N550
@ thank you …Davide
Your showing everything at max pressure it looks like to me. I wonder if you back it of a half grain or full grain? The Nosler book I have has H4831 with 130 gr bullets as the most accurate powder tested. It does show the most accurate load with this combination at the lower charge weight. Im assuming as you back off the max pressure your burn percentage starts coming up..??
Nope. More pressure the more likely you are to burn all the powder
Ok thanks for that information.
Have you tried N555?
😁 THANKS FOR DOING THIS AUSTIN! 🥳 MABEY YOU CAN SAVE ME SOME MONEY AND TEACH ME SOMETHING? 💵
Dude you need to try Alliant L26. I get 130gn+ speeds using a 150gn projectiles, and accurate too. Next is H4832, and then H4350.
I couldn't make out what you called the computer program you are using. Can you please respond as to what ballistics program you are using in the video? Thanks
Gordon's Reloading Tool
So I'm good sticking with H4350? I'm still using 130gr Partitions and AccuBonds for 270 WCF
Yep
I'm confused. I have a 270, so thanks for the video. How do you determine the load you were talking about. GRT was showing over pressure don't use. Is this a load you work up to or just look for burn rate and go with a load that gives you what you're looking for?
I was just going up to max 65k psi to see what velocities you can get and how much powder is burned
@@ReloadingWeatherby Is max pressure dependent on each rifle? The chamber, the freebore, etc.?
@@huntsimple9527 I would say yes
IMR 4831 under a Berger 140gr hybrid.... Pure magic.
I have used 100V for 270 Win and 7 WSM and have had pretty good results. You do get 100% burn rate with your load
Getting sub .5 moa out of howa 1500 22 inch barrel with norma brass, CCI 250 primer 140gr siera gameking point with N560 54gr at 2950fps
@ReloadingWeatherby Tim really changed your mind on appropriate burn rates huh?
Yep
I been working with different powders and I tried 4831sc and the accuracy wasn’t there in my rifles imr 4350 gave me a lot better accuracy with 130 grain anyhow now in the 280 AI I built it works better with the 4831sc with 150 grain anyhow now bullets and I did get some Nosler AB long range for it
So you are telling me the load I developed in 1998 for my Rem 700 mountain rifle was not good, even though the 150 ballistic tip was doing 2900 fps, shot 0.6 moa and had an extreme spread off 25 fps and was absolutely devastating on the Himalayan Tahr I built the rifle for
That's a good load... but my video is about finding the best load. When I use the correct powder my ES is well below 10
