Glad to see @quarterminutemagnums likes the old 6.5x55. I have two in my safe and will eventually build another for a bench gun. A lot of people don’t realize that in a modern action you can load them close to 6.5-284 to 6.5 PRC speeds. Which is really impressive for a cartridge that was designed 130 years ago.
On the contrary the 6.5 Creedmoor derangement syndrome where people believe its the best cartridge for any hunting for any game at any distance, may be why we haters hate it so much, admittedly the 6.5 Creedmoor is great for what it was designed to do
It always has been a bad situation but some think that it shines like the sun. I learned 40 years ago from my father in the reloading room. Those Weatherby belted magnums are hard to beat . In the Canadian woods 243 at close range has fed moose and elk to logging camps and families since it's inception. Maybe because it's so deadly and quiet in the trees if you know what I mean. Daughter has killed her biggest moose at 8 feet away with 100gr Hornady Interlock at 3151 fps.
Definitely a good option for youngins I’d be hesitant to use it on moose or elk unless you’re close range and a real good shot but nonetheless good stopping power for and easy shooter
laughing at him wondering where to get 25-06 brass… as if you can’t just neck down either of 2 of the most popular cartridges of all time, 270 win and 30-06. Also, hornady, norma, PPU and remington all have 25-06 brass in stock at midway. There’s others too. Even if it’s not a popular new rifle cartridge, there’s like a million of them still in existence slaying deer and coyotes alike
These guys are way above many of us average Joes. I don't have a custom rifle but have been doing just fine with regular brass and I have necked down 3006 when I couldn't get any.
Oh, absolutely, you can find brass for the 25-06rem also top-notch hunting bullets-Nosler, Lapua, Norma, and the whole gang. Now, I heard you say that you’re less than thrilled with the legendary 243 Winchester, yet you’ve had your heart set on the 6mm Remington, which only edges it out by a whopping 100 ft/s or so But hey, who’s counting? And let’s not forget the young hunters who’ve managed to shoot elk and then played an intense game of hide-and-seek with them inside the timber never to be found.that’s been shot with the 243win But, of course, it’s not about the questionable shot placement that’s responsible for the elusive nature of these animals disappear, disappearing, right here’s a another secret 90% of the time don’t tell nobody that I said this, but at 243Winchester is not considered a elk caliber “oops did I tell? But nevertheless, I don’t think that a 100gr Nosler partition at 3100 fps would bounce off a deer or elk when placed in the right spot although it would not be my first choice but there are hunters who lose animals every year with much larger, calibers I guess a 300rum and all its cousins are not elk calibers Honestly, I’m not sure you’d be the ideal candidate if I had an another rifle project, but hey, no hard feelings! Just a light-hearted observation from my end.
@LS-oh8kv He said at the end of the video that he had a book with thousands of reamer designs. And you laugh because he can’t remember off the top of his head purchasing supplies availability for a cartridge that started declining over 10 years ago. Also he uses top shelf products and methods maybe there is a reason he doesn’t want to neck brass down from another cartridge.
I'm not a huge AR fan but I've had the 224 Valkyrie since it was released, an MSR platform Savage with an 18" barrel. I've run it out to 1440yds with decent accuracy. Once I started shooting it suppressed the groups came down in size and it's become the rifle that seems to make it to the range every time I go. I've also been getting in to the 6mm category after rebarreling a 22-250 to 6mm BR and loving it so I've decided to order a 6 ARC upper to see what kind of accuracy it's capable of. Great interview!
Glad you mentioned one of my newest acquisitions a 338-378 Wby. Love that round. With a good Brake its very pleasant to shoot. I know you hate brakes but that SRS TiPro5 MB makes it about a 7-08 territory. You can easily shoot 50 rounds in a session. Easily. Love the show. Looking forward to your next one
He hates 243 because it wounds elk. Will someone please tell this so called gun builder that the 243 isn't an elk cartridge or was never intended for elk. Geeeze!!
Long range shooters seem to be transitioning away from the 284 Win and its variants. The problem is brass life. A lot of shooters are using 6.5 PRC cases necked up to 7mm since they pretty much match the speeds of the 284s but last longer .
I owned a 224 WBY several years in a varmintmaster, great cartridge! If I was looking at that type of gun again, I would buy a 22-250. I did two 22 Creedmoor’s last week for a couple of yote hunters, they killed some this past weekend. I did a 240 WBY for myself on a Sako M995 action with Krieger Stainless 5R 8.5 twist 26”: deer and yote zapper! If you are looking for a 6mm hunting cartridge 240 WBY is what I would recommend. Great video as always!
I really liked this video Austin. This guy doesn’t really bash any cartridges just the creedmoor and I understand that with all the fanboys it gets old! But what he says about all the other cartridges in my opinion is spot on! Very good segment one of my favorites 👍🏻
A while back Rich Reiley built 2 WIN 270's for me. One was lightweight barrel and the other with a #4 profile using Lilja 24" barrel. Both shoot the Superformance 140SST ammo accurately getting 3100-3200 fps at the muzzle, GREAT deer rifle for Coues. Last month shot a HP silhouette match and my shooting partner was shooting the 25GT, was amazing to see him knock down 9/10 500m ram with the impacts all in about the same spot. 25GT looks to be getting traction.
The hate on the 6.5 creedmoor is reaching insane levels. A cartridge is a tool. Find what you need your tool to do and pick the cartridge that works best for what you need. If you deer hunt out to 500 yards and target shoot 6.5 creedmoor is perfect. If you’re trying to shoot an elk at 800 (no one should) then it’s probably not the right option. It’s always the old fudds that hve too much money.
Thanks for pointing out the 338 federal!!! My gun is accurate beyond what you should use it. I've loaded loads good enough for elk up to 400 yds. Absolute hammer on white tail.
Enjoyed. Cant argue with anything mentioned.. Was hopeing to hear a bit on the 7x57 8x57 n 325.. 7x57 is bit better than 708 if one reloads. Had all the WSMs 325 300 7mm n 270 in order for me. Carry ON
Great video. I bumped into an old guy at the range in Logan. He let me shoot his 6 ppc. Every round was through the same hole. He taught he how to shoot an 8 o’clock. I would love to have one of those. Thanks for sharing. What part of Idaho are you in?
@@quarterminutemagnums I've got little experience when it comes to this. Is it cause they are both well designed cartridges or when paired with a custom chamber you can achieve great results? Thanks William
My great grandfather lost his leg with a .218 Bee. He lent it to a buddy to mule deer hunt in southern Utah. The guy gave it back to him with one in the chamber. The next year, he pulled the rifle out to mule deer hunt and assumed it was unloaded and accidentally shot himself in the leg. By the time they got him from his home in Hatch, Utah, to the hospital in Richfield, Utah, they had to take his leg. But Grandpa great killed a bunch of deer with it. That was way back before you had to take hunters' safety to hunt.
Really appreciate you making this video. Thank you . This will be a long one, lol . When my Grandpaw passed, we inherited quit a few rifles . And 222-Rem & 222-Rem mag was in that bunch they both are very accurate cartridges. Most people don't realize the 223-Rem parent case is the 222-Rem. The 224-valkrie is a very accurate cartridge by federal. In my opinion, and experience with the 224-valkrie. It's also the parent cartridge to the 7mm-valkrie and many other wildcats . My Dad, around the time I was born, built a 22-250-AI & 220-swift-AI. He said he was so impressed with both cartridges, making them Ackley improved . Would make them more impressive and efficient with longer reloading brass life . I bought a matching pair of Ruger M77 red lable 26in varmint barreled rifles in 2001 for $600. I also bought the 243-win and 25-06-Rem in Ruger red lable M77 26in varmint in 2004. Now my M-77 varmint set is complete . We also have 243-win-AI and 6mm-Rem-AI. My dad was a firm believer in Ackley, improving everything because it made the cartridge extremely efficient. We also have a 6mm Lee Navy . That's also the parent cartridge for the 220swift . 6-BRA is WOW accurate 1 hole groups. Then we have the overbore speed demands 6-SAUM improved or 6-UM . 6-WSM or 6-MEGA, (6mm-Arnold or Mach IV 264-win necked up to 6mm) we only shoot 100-117gr bullets with them. 1000-1500 rounds if we don't run to hot .The 257-WBY with the 140-145gr black hole bullets at 3070fps is a power house. The 25-06-AI, believe it or not, runs within 100-150fps behind the 257-WBY. The 257 Blackbird is a freak of nature. It's the 7mmBlaser necked up to 257-Cal. The 25-Stalker is a beast 338 norma improved necked up to 257-Cal , 257-Lazer , 25-SAUM, 257-pronghorn-WSM), 257 Allen Express all excellent cartridges. The 260-Rem-AI , 6.5×55 Swiss, 6.5-Rem mag short action, 264-win are all great cartridges. But the 6.5 SAUM and 6.5-WSM ,6.5-WBY RPM, 6.5-EAGLE imp is the 7mmBlaser necked up to 6.5-cal. The 6.5 mighty mouse is 338 norma cut to short action. Very impressive cartridge. 26-Nosler , 26 Sherman magnum, and 26 Stalker , 6.5 prometheus and 6.5 Skuldryl holy hell Lazer beams . The 270-win-AI , 6.8 western, 270-SAUM, 270-WSM, 270-WBY 27-Nosler, 27 Sherman magnum, and 27 stalker. You ask why because we can, and it's different from everyone else. The 7mm08, 7-SAUM, 7-WSM , 7 REM mag , 7 Blaser , 280 Rem-AI , 284-Jerrett , 7 Dakota, 7-STW , 7-RUM OMG 180-200gr need I say more. 7-norma mag imp. Nothing comes back from that. The 30-06-AI , 300 SAUM , 300-WSM , 300-win, 300 H&H, 300 Jerrett, 300-PRC , 30 Sherman magnum , 30-Nosler 300 Vodka, 300 Raptor,( 300 B.S.M 416 rigby necked up to 30-cal) The 30-R-blaser , 300-ICL Grizzly , 300-Blaser magnum, 30-XC David Tubbs, 300 Dakota, 300 Allen Magnum, 300 werewolf 240gr 3350fps & 300 Headhunter 250gr 3500+fps . I can talk guns all day . My 6 brothers and I & 1 sister were born into the hunting shooting, reloading wildcating cartridges. We've burned out more barrels, OMG . Then we found hammer forged barrels, and C.H.F barrels and Button-rifled barrels and everything changed . Now we get 10 times the round count on our barrels. My dad started full time in 1970 . He bought me my first press and loading components for Christmas in 1985, and I hit the ground running. We eventually started making coustom loads for close friends and family and upgrading & improving their rifles. I knew how to reload before I knew my ABCs, lol . Ok this is getting to long turning into a biography lol. God bless you and your family.God bless America 🇺🇸🇨🇱 🇺🇲 🇨🇱 🇺🇲🇨🇱🇺🇲🇨🇱.
The 375 Weatherby is not totally dead. It’s actually a pretty good cartridge. It gains 100 to 150 fps over the .375 H&H. For brass you can fire form .375 H&H cases in a 375 Weatherby chamber and Hodgdon has good load data for it.
Cartridge selection comes to a personal preference up to some extent: min 23:35: Herb Klein who won the first weatherby also preferred the .300 wby mag extensively, while Reza Pahlavi used the 7x57mm mauser for most of his mounain hunting in central Asia. Different cartidges but both got the job done. Probably the 300 win mag and the 7mm rem mag are the most popular among world hunters nowadays.
“7 PRC - why?” but “7 WSM is a great cartridge.” “6.5 CM is crap” but “7mm-08 is a great cartridge.” “270 Wby > 7mm Wby” but “might as well go to 28 Nosler if you’re looking at the 27 Nosler.” The guy certainly is opinionated.
@@jasonf.4107 also he says he loves a 55 grain bullet at 3925fps from 22-250 but hates the .243 Winchester….hate to tell him the .243 pushes a 58gr vmax to 3925-4000fps with basically same BC as 55gr .22 vmax. It must be trash though…. Makes no sense. Zero logic applies to his opinions it seems.
@ my happiness is not dependent on what he thinks. His opinions don’t make a whole lot of sense, though. Shitting on the 6.5 CM but praising the 6.5x47 Lapua, shitting on the 7mm PRC but praising the 7mm WSM, passing over the 6.5 PRC but praising the 6.5x.284, that all sounds like a custom gunmaker’s hard sell to convince you to buy a custom gun in a rare chambering from him and forego an inexpensive factory rifle that will perform just as well.
I found out about the Remington factory 22-250, 50 gr. ammo about 20 years ago. Mine shot exactly 3925 fps also. I can tell many people didn't believe me when I told them. Shot amazing groups, so I never hand loaded for it. That gun was in a house fire, so I haven't owned a 22-250 since, unfortunately.
😂 The Most Important Thing Said Here, Which Is Not An Exaturation, Is If You Think You've Invented Something in The Cartridge World - It Has Probably Already Been Done! Their Is Nothing New Under The Sun! 😜 🌝
He needs to know that brass for many cartridges is easily formed from their parent cases; IE, one can form 264 Win Mag from 7mm Rem Mag with one pass through. He didn't respect the 6.5 Needmore & 243, neither do I.
Great video. Hope you have more with him. I watch his channel also. The only thing is, I cant see that he will ever change my mind about using Berger bullets for hunting. I just haven't heard anything yet that makes me think of them as a good hunting bullet. 🤷♂️ might just be me....
@@ReloadingWeatherby he sure does preach them. I subscribed to Little Crow Gunworks after I saw them on your channel. Watching the 7mm series now. I have to replay a lot because I don't understand some it. I enjoy his bluntness though.
I was attending a gunsmithing college where weatherby would sell us one barreled action at cost. You ppickeddl your first choice and second choice off a list and if they didnt have them wwhen the time came to send them out, you got what you got. I had asked for a 6.5 swede or a 7mm mauser. And thats how i ended up with a 300 weatherby magnum. I had to re imagine mu stock profile, because i wasnt going to make a lightweight stock for it.
Got a 240 weatherby only because they had a matching gun in 257 weatherby got as a pair.turned out liking both. Never had a 240 before but always had 257 weatherbys. Hard to argue with a weatherby.
257 Weatherby unless you reload is crazy expensive much the same way all Weatherby ammo is. 6.5 Creed gets a lot of hate but it’s a proven cartridge. Some of the best FClass shooters are shooting a 6.5PRC cartridge necked up to a 7mm calling it 7PRCW
Man I don’t know…6.5 Crapmoor and then says the 6.5x47 Lapua is a great deer/target gun. Literally same or slower velocities, and ammo/brass is WAY more expensive!! Goes to show the Creedmoor is a relevant cartridge that people love to hate on 😂. Fun video, thanks for sharing!
I finally have the funds for a new rifle, so I have a serious question for anyone willing to share their thoughts. It seems like the factory loads for the 7mm PRC is still extremely limited despite it being one of the calibers that is apparently doing really well in rifle sales. Are we ever going to get the variety of cartridges that say the 7mm Rem Mag currently has? Heck, I would even take half the number of those offerings. I am starting to get the feeling it is going to be a reloader's caliber in that only a very limited number of companies are producing factory ammo.
How can you say a .243w is bad but a 6cm is great? It can shoot the same bullet at the same speed lol Hit the same animal in the same spot by the same shooter. Lord. I usually like getting some useful info from these vids but geez. Plenty of records set with .243w back in the day too.
I loved the mic 🎤 drop! lol 😂 I’ve always believed that! Now it’s confirmed by a guy that builds guns for a living! Even though there’s certain self proclaimed geniuses who frequent here that will cry a river in Montana lol 😂
@quarterminutemagnums that's because competition guys say weatherby is a hunting gun and round not a competition gun. Yet I stack 5 shots with mine in .244 moa groups
🤔 So, Austin, After Seeing The Results of Little Crow Gunworks Calculation on The 338 Lapua - Do You Still Want To Hunt With a 12 lb Rifle and a 30" Barrel in Thick Timber or Pack It Up a 12,000 ft Peak and Enjoy 42 ft lbs of Recoil? Or, Would You Rather a 6 lb and 22" Barreled 280AI With 19 ft lbs of Recoil For The Same Task? Hummm... 😂

Perhaps if he would elaborate why his opinion is as such rather than merely resorting to namecalling, while praising other cartridges that are pretty near identical to it.
North river - Perhaps if people would look at the balistics ( velocity and trajectory ) and energy they would see that there is not much there ! It was designed as a target cartridge but was hyped and sold as a hunting cartridge ! There are so many better existing 6.5 cartridges not to mention other caliber cartridges . For example compare the 270 win or 7 08 to the 6.5 needsmore and it is obvious it an inferior hunting cartridge !….

His point was high quality brass. You can easily get lower quality brass in 25-06. But yes you could neck down 30-06 Lapua brass.
But nevertheless, I don’t think that a 100gr Nosler partition at 3100 fps would bounce off a deer or elk when placed in the right spot although it would not be my first choice but there are hunters who lose animals every year with much larger, calibers I guess a 300rum and all its cousins are not elk calibers
Honestly, I’m not sure you’d be the ideal candidate if I had an another rifle project, but hey, no hard feelings!

100 years old this year, Winchester .270.
Still works.
Pretty good.

Lots of pay attention nuggets on that video. Enjoyed the knowledge shared.

Bet you live in the East..............
Long range shooters seem to be transitioning away from the 284 Win and its variants. The problem is brass life. A lot of shooters are using 6.5 PRC cases necked up to 7mm since they pretty much match the speeds of the 284s but last longer .
Graf's has Peterson Brass IN STOCK for the 7mm Rem Ultra Mag and the 270 Weatherby Mag.
Also ADG has 7 rum brass, unknown munitions has it
Nothing about the good old .35 Remington :(
I owned a 224 WBY several years in a varmintmaster, great cartridge!
That was a great rundown. Great idea having him do that.
Thanks for watching all of it lol

My great grandfather lost his leg with a .218 Bee. He lent it to a buddy to mule deer hunt in southern Utah. The guy gave it back to him with one in the chamber. The next year, he pulled the rifle out to mule deer hunt and assumed it was unloaded and accidentally shot himself in the leg. By the time they got him from his home in Hatch, Utah, to the hospital in Richfield, Utah, they had to take his leg. But Grandpa great killed a bunch of deer with it. Love my 7STW & 7RUM. The 264mag always works too.
The 375 Weatherby is not totally dead. It’s actually a pretty good cartridge. It gains 100 to 150 fps over the .375 H&H. For brass you can fire form .375 H&H cases in a 375 Weatherby chamber and Hodgdon has good load data for it.
Appreciated................

@@alexandrealain Have you built ANY of these cartridges? Perhaps the "sense and logic" would be evident to you with more information and experience.

It’s always interesting to hear what custom gunsmith think about cartridges. I
I found out about the Remington factory 22-250, 50 gr. ammo about 20 years ago. Mine shot exactly 3925 fps also. I can tell many people didn't believe me when I told them.
