Foundry Did WHAT With D&D?! | D&D 5e Update 3.0 Overview

  • Hello there! And I know I'm a tad late to the party, but In this video I talk about the BIG news that Foundry is now officially partnered with D&D! I also give an overview of Foundry's new D&D 5e version 3.0 update, and all the good and not so good it brings to the game system. I hope you enjoy, and thank you all for 800 subscribers!
    ❗An important note that I forgot to mention is that if you like/prefer the old character sheet, you can change it back to the legacy 5e sheet in your character sheet settings (the little cog wheel at the top right of a sheet).
    ❗Also, beware that some big/popular mods are still in the process of updating to the new version of D&D, so they might become incompatible if you update your D&D 5e game system, at least until the modders have some time to catch up.

      I'd definitely recommend using Foundry if you plan to use it as a TV battlemap displayer. 😁 And if you use the Automated Animations and JB2A mods, then it really adds to the immersion for your sessions in my experience! 🧙‍♂️
      P.S. I LOVE your music and ambience! I use them in literally every session. 🎶

      I use foundry VTT with a table with a screen built in, and play music through foundry vtt with your music! Would highly recommend great for fog of war, initiative tracking, quick access to monster sheets, automatically switch to combat music, setup town music when you pull up the town, and all sorts of other things.

      As for the audio, our new tool Opus does more than Foundry (even with mods), but it's certainly already much better than Spotify and TH-cam haha.

    Great overview! Your spell slot mockup is way better. I especially like the idea of different colors for different levels. Also, have no fear, Atropos has stated that NPC sheets are getting an updated look in a future update. I'm hoping they have the monster block look to them.

    I have spent so much time configuring foundry, making official campaigns in foundry and making it mine - this just wrecks everything. But Im happy. In the end, it will make things easier. What I am a bit afraid of is that the official modules become the de facto standart of play for foundry, because its strength is precisely that you can do whatever in it and that you do not need to buy so much stuff.
    And WotC has this nasty habit of puking out content that you would have to buy three times or so.
    FoundryVTT truly is the Linux of VTTs and we should protect that freedom at all cost.

      I do think Foundry has some safety behind it due to its use for Pathfinder and other TTRPGs that aren't WOTC, it would be stupid if Foundry gave that all up just for WOTC, so there's some layer of protection there of stuff they wouldn't be willing to do.

    Beautiful introductory video about all the features of dnd3.0. At the moment I'm waiting for the MIDI-QOL update to update the DND version, I'm afraid that many automatisms don't work without that module. A question, in the video you showed the party of the players, how do you create it? I'm new to foundry so I'm not very familiar with it. Is it possible to loot monsters by default in version 3.0? Thank's

    • @nattertot
      @nattertot  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can create a party actor the same way you'd normally create an NPC or player actor, but you can change it to be a party actor instead. And as far as I know, there isn't a way for players to loot an NPC in vanilla 5e (yet).

      You just have to click and drag the journal onto the map and it will create a journal on the map that you can make visible by clicking the little bookmark looking journal entry button on the left tool bar. It takes a little bit of time to set up all of them for a map, but I assure you that it's worth it.

      If you havent seen it yourself yet I saw on different forums they are waiting to release the books on foundry until the 5.5e update so they dont have to port them and them update the ports immediately after. But thats just what I read not first hand information so take it as you will.

  • @WolfyBritishGuy
    @WolfyBritishGuy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I gave this a try the other day, as I wanted to set an Artificer using Foundry... only to find that you're only given the classes from the PHB, and on top of that, only the subclasses and backgrounds that you get from the free hand out are there (e.g. Barbarians can only choose Path of the Berserker), so, unless I'm missing something or not set something up correctly, this just feels like to me that WOTC are just going to charge you later for the full thing and any additions (like with D&D Beyond). And of course, the older version seems to have vanished

    • @nattertot
      @nattertot  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's definitely possible that they will create a paid, premium module in order to access that content (and probably more likely than not, considering WotC's track record), but in the meanwhile you can use a mod called DnD beyond importer that allows you to download any and all content you have on Dnd beyond over to Foundry. I've been using that mod basically the whole time I've been on Foundry, and it's worked great in my experience. 😁

  • @pheoxin
    @pheoxin 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Hey! here I am at 3 am watching videos about VTTs: roll20, foundry and alchemy. I was considering roll20 or alchemy but right now? Damm its foundry or alchemy. I do most stuff on dnd beyond for homebrew. I want something good and easy that will cover all import of it so everyone at the table can use it. Not mentioning now: how is learning curve for foundry? Is it still a lot to handle and learn or is it way simpler than before? Another thing is that so far I was DMing via theater of the mind and I still want mainly be focused on that exception to bigger fights and place that a lot of different things will come into play. What do you think?

    • @nattertot
      @nattertot  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      In my opinion Foundry does a good job of teaching you the basics with their built-in tutorials, and there are tons of fantastic how-to videos here on YT. I'm not sure when you tried it last, but I personally think the learning curve isn't too bad...as long as you don't download 100+ mods for your first session. 😅 Plus Foundry is verrrry flexible in terms of how you want to use it, and how complicated/automated you want your sessions to be.
      Alchemy is GREAT for theater of mind since they try to focus more on the ambience and immersion aspects of TTRPGs, and less on the combat and resource management parts. It's still fairly minimal when it comes to some things like combat tracking, it doesn't have mods, and they're still adding basic features to it (like it's missing a draw tool for example), but if you run a theater of mind game then you don't really need that stuff anyways. 😁👍
      But with that being said try them both out, ya know? See which one works best for you. I think Foundry has a demo version you can try out, and Alchemy is free, unless you subscribe to their Alchemy Unlimited (I think). 🤔

    • @pheoxin
      @pheoxin 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@nattertot Thanks for the reply, I definitely want to test both but im aware that during tests i wont see or test all things that will come 1 min after demo expires obviously! xD That would be just too easy, right?
      What about compatibility with DnDbeyond? as thats where I craft almost everything item and spell wise.
      Alchemy : As simple and nice as it seems, im afraid that for HB world without subscription it just wont work. And that's another cost on top of all my dnd books and supplements THAT I WONT GIVE UP! That nice ambient, effects, etc I got a feeling that after few sessions they wont be noticeable anyway since it's just "wow! something new!" and then poof magic of it just blends in and become static background.
      Foundry: I dont look for full automatization and all of that. I cant lie do - I do like good useful mod hahaha All port forwarding and server stuff seems a bit handy and scary on the start too. It doesn't seem so easy to handle and manage and that there is just "too much" ? at least for a vtt first timer?
      For me as DM, I want to be able to have few things in my vtt:
      Like i mentioned DnD beyond connectivity is a big part of my game. Then pictures of the place as background/front while they just go around and explore to set up a theme and they can think of streets, building and everything that surrounds them. Battle maps for bigger fights and important place where they might need to see shape or specific order of things to discover, solve puzzle. If so easy made fog of war, so no spoiler will happen :D Music integrated with it would be great so everyone can feel the mood and energy of the situation. Access PC character sheets so i can quickly check / help them out when they too lost in something. I dont pay attention to magical components or distance that much. But I heard from my players that formations, placement and distance to check is something that they would really like to have. Which VTT would you recommend for that ? :)

    • @nattertot
      @nattertot  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@pheoxin Oh, well in that case it sounds like Foundry is definitely what you want. Foundry has a fantastic fog of war and dynamic lighting system, and there's a mod called DDB-Importer (by MrPrimate) that lets you import just about anything from D&D Beyond into Foundry. Some features are locked behind his Patreon, but if I remember correctly the core mod is still free (meaning you can import characters from D&D Beyond into Foundry.)
      And regarding port forwarding using Foundry, it's not too terribly difficult and I think Foundry has a guide on how to do that somewhere on their website. But I understand it can seem a bit daunting, especially if you've never done it before. But of course if you don't want to do that but still want to use Foundry, then there are a couple of great third party hosting services that you can choose from that are listed on their website.
      foundryvtt.com/article/hosting/
      If you decide to use Foundry, the important thing to remember is to take things slowly. It's a very powerful VTT and can do a lot, but it's very easy to get carried away installing mods, learning how to use tiles, setting up character sheets, and then feel overwhelmed.
      Hope this helps, and happy gaming! 🧙‍♂️🎲

    It's stupid that WotC keeps dropping the ball on supporting DMs and now not even updating NPC sheets. DMs only account for approximately 1/5 of the player base so they try to pander to players... But DMs have always been the ones who buy the most products and are the ones that bring players to the table. They really need better DM support. (and getting DMs to buy a book 3 times isn't helping! I really hope there is no need to pay full price for a foundry compendium just to get stuff like Tasha's or Xanatar's content) (it's nice to see the adventure module is solidly built though I will thank Foundry for that instead of WotC)

    I feel like when there is an edition referred to by 3.0(when specifically referring to the 3.0 exclusive materials and not the whole of the 3rd edition) you might want to clarify which you are referring to in the title itself.
