I used to live in Newark over a decade ago. When you're living there you don't realize how bad it is but you know that it's bad. When you move out and you move far away to a suburb and then you look back at what it is that you moved from you realize just how bad it really is.

Yeah there are a lot of great suburbs in NJ, I grew up one. Crazy to take a drive to Paterson or Newark and see such a stark contrast in a short distance. The state I love has a lot of rough spots, Nick Johnson has some good videos driving in areas that seem to have lost a lot of hope like Camden, Chester. Tough to see but necessary

Newark NJ was built to be a mini Manhattan. Back in the day Newark had its own Broadway where the shows from NYC Broadway would actually be shown in Newark first to get the response and feedback so they could rework/improve the show for NYC theaters. Penn Station in Newark was built all the way back in 1935 and it was the main hub for the Pennsylvania Railroads train network. Newark was affluent back in the day as well, don't believe me? Stroll through Forest Hill and you will see some of the most beautiful homes in all of NJ. In fact Newark was such a great place to live people of all races, creeds and cultures lived there together peacefully. You had Italian and Irish immigrants along with Jewish and black folks, it was a real melting pot, a great place to live and grow up. Then the race riots happened and forever changed the face of NJ. Every part of NJ that is now 'ghetto' once had wealthy people living there and had beautiful homes/stores/neighborhoods before the riots. Plainfield, East Orange, Orange, Newark, Trenton, Camden...these were all nice towns with affluent areas that had beautiful homes and bustling down towns. So when you see all the beautiful old buildings amongst the boarded up, bombed out places, just know that Newark was once a beautiful and well respected city. I do believe with the right leadership it could be again. Get all these liars, gas lighters and corrupt people out of government in NJ and Newark will prosper again

You have no idea of which you speak. Forest hills was dramatically segregated, the cutoff was Bloomfield Ave.
Puritans founded the colony that would become Newark and I doubt there was any thought as to being a mini Manhattan lol. Stop making shit up.
Pittsburgh also has its own theater district with an amazing historical district. Is it a mini Manhattan too? Silly person

NJ in whole, was and is and will always be corrupt. The only way to deal with the corruption is leave NJ behind and move out. There is absolutely no hope. Ever.
As far as Newark, it should be wiped completely out. Kinda like how Chernobyl is. No inhabitants whatsoever.
Folks from Newark attitude "you in my neighborhood, now get out!!!"
What I can't fathom is for the ones who do work, many of those have good paying jobs at the busiest airport. Newark liberty international airport. And never leave Newark! It's a mentality in Newark. Prostitution all over and I have literally seen a black man and woman literally engaged in sex over a signal box on the street for every single person to see. I was an uber driver with passengers in my vehicle and the woman passenger was completely fixated on these two. She couldn't take her eyes off of them. As if this is absolutely normal. Sickening. I was almost equally sickened by my passenger. NJ politicians are corrupt to the bone! I think it maybe due to organized crime through out NJ. I dont want to use the "M" word. End of rant..

I have to be honest. Flying into Newark Airport doe's not show the true beauty found in the streets of Newark. I saw many houses that were perfect for my family and I. There was plenty of space for my kids to play outside and go to school. Nice parks to walk the dog at night and have a picnic lunch in the summer. I noticed there was a drive by street pharmacy where several drug vendors displayed their wares. My wife and I are sold on Newark. We picked out a couple nice houses during the drive and hope they are still available. Thank you for showing us Newark.

I flew into Newark airport one time to visit friends in New York and family in Pennsylvania. Got a hotel right next to the airport. My friend in New York was like "wait, you're spending the night in Newark?" I was like "yeah, but it's an airport hotel." He was like "oh, ok, it should be fine then, just don't get too far from the airport." No problems there. That didn't come until my trip was over and I was headed back to the airport to return my rental car. I got off an exit or two early (coming from Pennsylvania) to grab a bite to eat before my flight. I pulled up to a white castle and before I stepped out of the car I could tell the place was packed but there wasn't a single white person in there. And there was bullet proof glass behind the counter. I was like "I don't think I want to go in there." So I opted for the drive through. But I got panhandled by a crackhead while I was trying to place my order. Anyway, I got my food, and went on my way. But it turned out to be one of those exits where you can get off the highway but can't get back on. So I had to try and find an entrance to the airport on surface streets. I thought I had driven into a war zone. There were falling down buildings, dumpsters on fire, and somebody had piled a bunch of old furniture in the middle of an intersection. I had to drive up on the sidewalk to get around it. I thought I was about to be jacked for sure. I've been to the actual third world (Africa, India, Mexico, and Guatemala) and I've never seen anything worse or been more on edge...

Imagine if all the old projects like Prince st, Scudder, Hayes, 7th Ave, Dayton st, Seth Boyden, Lil Bricks, Bradley Court, Baxter Terrace, Brick Towers and Grafton were still up. Now that would be a tour of the REAL Newark. I think the only ones left are Hyatt, Pennington, Crane, The Spires and Georgia King Village. I have great memories growing up in Brick City.

Hello. Thank you for showing how it really is: complete devastation, heaps of garbage, everything is like we have in Russia, except for Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan, where, in fact, all the money from our cities goes ...

I lived on Izzy in 2015-2016. It was hard but I have a lot of love for that neighborhood. People looked out for their neighbors there.

This only covers a small portion of the city. Doesn’t travel far South, no East, mostly West, no North and none of the Central Ward is covered.

I moved to Newark a few years ago after being priced out of NYC and it’s not so bad. Just gotta know how to mind your business and have the right social skills to deal with the occasional crazy 🤷🏾‍♂️ But stay off of Broad Street at night 🤣

In New Jersey you need a certificate of occupancy for a change of property owner. Salvaging houses there is just too risky.
