  • Welcome to #sewvlogtober Days 1, 2....and 10 🤨 Off to a very slow start this year as I have been dealing with non-sewing related issues. I hope you enjoy this vlog where I clean up my sewing room and start my festive Bara Studio Romy top (and by start, I mean, barely get to the 'cutting out fabric stage' 🤦‍♀️😅)

Well done on taking your measurements and at least attempting to use them to compare to the pattern! I should probably do that too, and I think I even have the same book, so thank you for showing your process. I almost always have to do a forward shoulder adjustment, and I really need to consider whether I need a round back adjustment as well. I recently started to do a 3/8" forward shoulder on all my patterns, without a muslin, and so far it's worked out really well. Excited to see how your top turns out - that pumpkin fabric is really cute and festive :)

Thank you! It is so satisfying when the adjustment work out, isn’t it?!

How do you know you need a shoulder adjustment, meaning what is tight? I often have tightness at my shoulder blades when reaching forward. I think I may need extra room in the back. I often just go up a size and it works. I like my clothes loose fitting where I am not restricted in movement or feel choked. I also bought a book on fitting because it was recommended for a sew liberated Hinterland hacking class I am taking. I love it so far. It teaches you about pattern adjustments so you can have the dress into 12 versions and more after you learn these skills. Maybe you may like it? I got it on sale around a holiday. I love how you share your trials and successes with fitting. I often remake patterns that fit me well and change a few details each time because of the work that goes into a new pattern with adjustments and sizing. It’s so much to do but worth the effort so I get a garment I really love to wear. So glad to see you here again!

Tightness at the shoulder blades could mean you need a wide/broad back adjustment. That’s what I ended up doing. I think that, plus any other pulling in the area or neckline riding backwards, or gaping at the collar could mean other shoulder related adjustments. That book sounds interesting, what is it called? I’ll have to look it up! Fitting is so difficult, I’ve barely scratched the surface.

I’ve spent months re-arranging and organizing all mine. Prepping a video for that. Honestly, I’ve been trying to do a video for months. Don’t feel bad when life calls you elsewhere. Sometimes that is just where you should be.

Oh no, I am sorry to hear about the hand issues. Fingers crossed you can sew a bit without bothering it too much 🤞 even 10- 15 mins can really add up!
