  • This video illustrates how Americans can afford a university education if they or their family do not have a great deal of money. It explains the financial aid process, gives an example of a financial award package, and encourages students to submit a FAFSA to determine their eligibility.

      I feel for you. I spent some time in foster care, and at the age of 17 was homeless. I managed to go to community college while living out of a tent and later a pop-up camper without heat during some pretty cold Chicago winters. There are many hard working people trying to make it out there. Now, I feel very blessed to be a professor at an elite university. I strongly believe that getting a college education allowed me climb out of poverty. Stick with it!

    My biggest piece of advice is to go to a community college or less expensive college, get your gen education courses, electives out of the way.
    That way when you transfer over, all the courses you take at the university will be major specific. I've done this and I've saved so much money

    PLEASE go to a Community College first!!! I had so much FOMO for not going straight to a university but it helped me so damn much. Tuition was $700 and I got $5,000 a semester with FAFSA and Work-Study. I saved the difference ($4,300) every semester until I got to a university and paid everything including my own apartment and school with the help of FAFSA for the incoming years plus what I had saved. Paid nothing out of pocket.

      No problem. Make sure to complete the FAFSA- it is a free application for financial aid that is required by schools if you want to be eligible for aid. The FAFSA can be completed after January 1st of your senior year of high school. You will need your parents' tax information and your tax information. Also, apply to colleges where your test scores and GPA are in the top 25% of their students. These are the schools where you will receive the most financial aid- they see you as a competitive applicant and will be more generous with aid to attract you to their school. If your high school grades and test scores aren't competitive, you might consider attending a community college for two years and obtaining an associate's degree. Work hard, improve your GPA, and then transfer to a 4-year university. Good luck!

    And when you add everything up be sure to add the increase in tuition every year because most colleges are not on a fixed tuition rate. I recommend a trade school, or accelerated school such as Nursing or anything that takes a year to 15 -18 months to complete so you will always have money, you can make around 27-35$ a hour and pay off those loans. Other than that, It’s alway best to start off at a community if you are not ready to go to a 4 year college.

    My parents are too poor to help pay for my college and they're too "rich" to qualify for a lot of aid. The tuition at the in-state university I want to go to is about $42,000. • @Edspira
      @Edspira  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you are accepted by a college you will receive a financial aid award letter. This letter will list the grants, scholarships, and loans you are being offered as well as your own expected contribution. It will also list the college's cost of attendance (COA). The COA minus your expected family contribution (EFC) is your financial need. The financial aid you are being offered may or may not completely meet your financial need. Thus, if the COA is $40,000 and your EFC is $3,000, then your financial need is $37,000. If you are in the top 25% of applicants at the college then the college will try to fully to meet your financial need by providing close to $37,000 in aid. If you receive less than $37,000 this means you have unmet need (a financial aid gap) which you can try to cover by reducing your expenses, picking up a part-time job, or trying to get PLUS loans.

    • @Edspira

      Contact the financial aid office to explain the situation and ask how to proceed. You will be considered "independent" if you are an emancipated minor, if a nonparent is your legal guardian, or if you are an orphan or ward of the court. If you are considered independent, this means you would only have to provide your information on the FAFSA, not the information of your parents.

    Hello Friend, great video. I have a question for you regarding my current situation. I completed my general education at a local community college & my RN pre-reqs. I used Cal Grants, I used the BOGG Fee Waiver to cover my tuition because my parents qualified. Fast forward, last month I graduated from a community college with my Associate Degree in Registered Nursing. My question to you is, should I work a year and save to pay for my bachelors degree? or Will I be able to get financial aid while working as a nurse to get my BSN? -- I guess indirectly, I am asking you will I make too much as a nurse working full time for Fin Aid and have I maxed out my Financial aid use?

    • @Edspira
      @Edspira  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grace Faith This is a great question and something a lot of people struggle with. You will be eligible for financial aid if you work as a nurse while taking courses for your BSN-- the amount of financial aid you are awarded will be based on your income from the prior year. Thus, if you made a lot of money in the prior year, you might not receive any grants. However, you will still be eligible for students loans. It is possible that your BSN program might offer grants or scholarship money independent of those you'd receive from the federal or state government. In terms of maxing out your financial aid use, you will continue to be eligible for aid as long as you make "satisfactory progress" toward your degree (which means you're passing all your courses and not having academic problems). I hope this helps!

      @Edspira  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Troy,
      Even with an EFC of zero, the cost of college will typically not be zero. Each college also varies on how much grant money that they give out. I'm glad you were able to make it work with the loans. Good luck!

    • @Edspira
      @Edspira  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Darcy Smith You might want to ask the university the size of their average grant. Universities with a big endowment will be more generous with university-specific grants and scholarships, which can be a nice addition to government-sponsored student loans. Also, you might go to the library and check out a book on scholarships from outside organizations. It takes a lot of time to apply to large numbers of scholarships, but if you have the time it might be worth your while to give it a shot. I hope you get a large award, and are able to achieve your dreams! Best wishes

      Unfortunately, there are people out there with more than $100,000 in student loans and jobs that pay minimum wage. If you are currently enrolled at least half-time in college, contact your loan servicer to obtain an in-school deferment. A deferment postpones repayment of your student loans until you finish school or drop below half-time enrollment. I'm not sure how many credits you have, but you might ask the staff at your local community college how close you would be to getting an associate's degree. You could get an associate's from the community college and then transfer to a 4-year university. Pick a major such as business administration, accounting, or finance if you want to make your job prospects as strong as possible. After you graduate, pay down your loans as fast as possible. If you make enough money to do so, you can make more than the monthly payment and pre-pay your loan earlier, saving you thousands of dollars of interest in the long haul. If you don't make enough to pay the monthly payment, then change your repayment plan to an income-based or income-contingent plan so you don't default on your loans. Another option is to work for a nonprofit or government agency for 10 years and have the loans forgiven through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. These are just some ideas, I hope things work out!

      The cost of living is definitely much cheaper in a college town. As for tuition, my town has a community college with tuition of $2,500/year and a 4-year public university with tuition of $15,000/year. Every place is different, and I feel awful for college students trying to get by in places like NYC.

      Captain Since neither parents went to college you qualify as a first generation college student and there are many scholarships for that. You can go on Unigo, fastweb, or cappex for scholarships. Try to go to a community college for two years until you can fund a university or college. Hopefully this helps :)

    I'm 22, kind of college drop out, with a 10 month old looking for a way to get back into school quickly for the both of us. I remember my first fafsa (I went to college for 2 weeks and stopped) a grant covered my whole tuition but I still took out $8000 for the semester (that I obviously didn't complete). But my aunt filed that out. Plus that was in my home state of Ohio. I'm now in Tennessee. So you think I'd be able to get around that again so I'd be able to pay living costs for my son and I? As in do I have to pay all $8000 back to get aid again or? I'm okay with working and school, I'm just not trying to miss out on a lot of his life either. I need a balance. Plus there's no way I could do it without aid. I don't honestly care how much debt it leaves me in if I get a degree that sets us up for the future.

    • @Edspira
      @Edspira  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harmony,
      It's difficult to say exactly how much aid you will get. Given that you have a son, you may be eligible to apply for independent status if you provide more than half of his support. If you qualify for independent status, then you'll be eligible for more aid since your parent's income will not be calculated into the Expected Family Contribution. We have actually posted 25 videos related to getting financial aid for college on our website. You can view more of our videos for free here:
      edspira.com/lessons/getting-financial-aid-college
      In regard to the program that you choose, make sure that the program is accredited. There are many colleges out there offering degrees that aren't accredited, then students who graduate from these programs have a difficult time finding jobs and paying off their loans. Taking on a bunch of student debt doesn't seem like a big deal initially, but once you graduate it can be really debilitating if you can't land the type of job you thought you could get (I know this from experience). My point is, don't always take the full amount of aid that they offer. Be judicious and only take what you need to get through the year because you may end up with larger payments than what you can afford once you graduate. Most likely there is a way for you to afford college while raising a child. I wish you the best in your endeavors.
      Take Care,
      Brooke

    • @Edspira
      @Edspira  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Another option is scholarships (which are different from grants). You can potentially receive scholarships from your university or from outside organizations. There are a number of books available on Amazon that list hundreds of scholarships you can apply for (although most of them apply to undergraduate students, not graduate students). Another source of funding is government-sponsored student loans. Assuming you filled out a FAFSA, at some point you will receive a summary of your financial package from your university that scholarships, grants, work-study, and loans. There are a few things that disqualify people from being eligible for student loans (a criminal conviction related to drugs, outstanding delinquent student loans, etc.) but most people are eligible. You become eligible for larger amounts of loans as you progress through your undergraduate studies, and you are eligible for the most amount when you are a graduate student. Also, there is the option of getting a part-time job in addition to your work-study. My wife attended a state university full-time while also working full-time; it's not ideal, but it's possible. By the way, I was assuming you are an undergrad but if you are a graduate student (i.e., you are pursuing a master's or doctoral degree) then you will find that a large number of universities (particularly public, state-funded universities) offer graduate assistantships, which provide a tuition waiver (free tuition) and a stipend (salary) of around $800/month (depending on the university). I hope this gives you some ideas! Best wishes :)

    • @Edspira
      @Edspira  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. You will receive a financial aid award letter from your university that outlines the details of your offer/award package. You can accept or decline items on an individual basis, so you are free to accept the grants and decline the loans. If at some point in the future you change your mind and think you might need a loan after all, you can contact your financial aid office to update your decision and possibly receive the proceeds of the loan later in the semester.

      Hang in there! It's not easy but you can do it. Make sure to fill out your FAFSA form. Your high school guidance counselor or a librarian can help you with this. Then apply to 5-10 colleges where your SAT or ACT score is very competitive compared to their average score among their current students. If you didn't do very well on the SAT or ACT, check to see if there is a community college near where you live. To save money, I went to a community college for 2 years and received an associate's degree. Then I transferred to a 4-year state college to obtain my bachelor's degree. This saved me a lot of money as the community college courses were much cheaper than the courses at the 4-year university. If you need a place to live, see if you can find a group of college students who are sharing a 3-bedroom apartment or something. Then you can rent just a single room instead of having to rent an entire apartment or pay room and board at a college, which can be expensive. I hope this helps!

You should email the financial aid offices of the universities that interest you and inquire about the typical financial aid package for foreign applicants at their universities to get an idea of what kind of scholarships/grants you might be eligible to receive. Good luck!

      A recent "Wall Street Journal" article www.marketwatch.com/story/heres-what-it-would-take-to-make-college-tuition-free-2018-10-05
      A city discovered a fix right here in the USA--Kalamazoo city Michigan is the first to provide a free college education in America for all its residents. If you want to go to a private university they still cover up to 100%. You can even go to University of Michigan or Western Michigan University (public universities). Possible to have it all covered. Even former president Obama mentioned it in his speeches. Many states are trying to replicate..It is called “Kalamazoo Promise” program and even foreigners may qualify.
      This is not to any surprise since Kalamazoo city was the first in the nation to provide a free education for all residents from K-12 long before other cities and state made it common. No wonder so many famous inventors and individuals come out of this little innovative community.

      Edspira.....My daughter filled out a FAFSA for college and went her freshman year, I too filled out a "parent plus" loan for the remainder of her debt for college that year.
      One day I got a letter in the mail from Nelnet (us dept. of education) and they said that I was delinquent on my payments, it was my understanding that I or my daughter was not to pay anything until her graduation. So I contacted the us dept of education and asked them to delay the payments until she graduates, they said they would send me a letter, I never received one, but they contacted the school and told them that it was granted. Then I got an e-mail from them saying that they had gotten duplicates of asking for an appeal and is still pending....Now mind you, the school has stated that if the remaining $4,000 is not paid by Jan. 2 of 2018 then she will not be able to attend classes. Is this right?
      In the fall of 2017 she filled out another FASFA and went to school through Dec. and NOW all of a sudden they can't help us? Because "THEY" the us dept of education says that because they have duplicates of an appeal it's our fault? I'm assuming one from the school and one from my daughter?
      What stinks is my husband has a big $ settlement that is coming but it could take a few years and we could pay it all, but until then we both work full time and we get turned down for another "parent plus" loan.....
      Please help..... :( what should I do? Thanks.

      YaBoi TK! The military has something called the GI bill. With the reserve, it's a little tough. If you were on active duty, you would just have to do three years of active service to get the full GI bill. But with reserve, I think you have to do the whole six years to get it. Check with your recruiter. The GI bill pays up to $18,000 and if your school is a yellow ribbon school then the yellow ribbon program will cover the rest. Those are your options for when you're done with your service but for right now, it's a little tough. You'd have to ask your command what's available. Your recruiter might not tell you everything. Remember, they want to hook you on the first line so hassle them for all the info you need.

Have you been admitted to other schools? Have you considered getting an associate's degree at a community college, and then transferring to a 4-year university? (I'm assuming you are an incoming undergrad)

    Okay, when you can get $11,500 to pay for college how do you pay for those popular college that above $30000 for each year? That’s 3 times the amount.

    • @Edspira
      @Edspira  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For starters, the $11,500 is for demonstration purposes. If you have a higher financial need, then the more expensive colleges will be more likely to give you aid. Also, most state colleges are much more affordable than private colleges and many state colleges have good reputations (i.e. rank high). Worst case scenario, you can always fall back on student loans. Colleges will often give you plenty of money in loans to cover your remaining expenses (tuition, room & board, books, etc.) The key is to apply to colleges that you think you'd have a good chance of getting admitted, then see what the financial award package is that they offer. Good luck!

      Go to your financial aid office and explain the situation. Sometimes they will be understanding if a parent absolutely refuses to pay. Can you get federal-work study funds? Work some extra-hours at a part-time job? If you simply can't afford it, look into a community college for your sophomore year. You might be able to get an associate's degree and then transfer back to the original university for your junior year. I know community college isn't glamorous but you can save a heck of a lot of tuition that way.

There's other grants you can get too but don't expect to get all your tuition paid for. There's a reason why so much people are leaving colleges in debt.

Guess who's paying for college? ME NOT MY PARENTS! This is what's stupid with this shit. I'm barley living on my own and hanging on by a thread. I barley make $13 an hr. But guess what I have other expenses to pay for. I can't go to college cause in the great of all things my parents make to much money for me to not get finical aid.

      Only U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens (e.g., someone with a green card) are able to receive federal financial aid. However, international students can submit the FAFSA and may be eligible for institutional aid (grants, scholarships, and loans from the college itself- not the federal government).

      In America, not so much.
      Like so high we collectively have over a trillion in student debt. For context, there's only 330 million people here, and since we don't all go to college, all that money is owed by even less than that amount of peopole
