Healthy Sense of Self

  • In this month’s teaching, Mingyur Rinpoche teaches how we can get in touch with a healthy sense of self and how we can free ourselves from the unhealthy sense of self that is so common in today’s world. To do this, we look closely at the sense of “I” and use this to see our innate qualities.
What do you experience when you look closely at the sense of “I”? Can you think of a situation when you have been able to let go of unhealthy beliefs about yourself? How did that affect how you perceived yourself?

Thank you, sir. The healthiest sense of self that I gift my self with, is the real-ization that I am not who or what I think I am. None of my thoughts, be they positive or negative, healthy or unhealthy, is who or what I am. Absolutely none of them. Not this or that, or even that. An incredible lightness shortly follows. I enjoy lightness. :)

@@accelwell7018 If there is any truth to the statement that "whom we really are is descriptionless", then whom do we become when we start to describe our selves as "the true self" and "the supreme being"? Do the descriptions that we create bind us to whom we think we are?

@@mr.solitude3352 words are very limiting we can use them as pointers general direction notes but once we begin to describe things we limit them. The supreme being the I am that is everyone's true nature is undescribable it transcends time and space. When I filter it through my it egoic mind it's no longer truth it becomes part of the Maya of life I can name it I can define it I can make it fit into a very limited space and time and forum. None of this is true it's found in the right here and the right now I am.

@@accelwell7018 David Goodman is a most artful and potent describer of certain thoughts and descriptions, to be sure. But our attention to our inhalations and exhalations, while we perform all of our functional activities, may be the most potent anchor to our descriptionless selves. At this stage of my life, I've become tired of excessive descriptions and prefer to rest in descriptionlessness instead. Just a preference for one entree over another, is all. :)

Thankyou, reminds me of a poem " The game of life, is let's pretend...and then let's pretend, that we are no longer pretending." We create so much mind suffering, by the monkey mind, ....then.....believe that it's all real, that it's permanent. So we believe our own nonsensence themes.....l'm this kind of person, that kind of person, l can, l can't themes, the little me, me, me, clamouring for attention. Realisation, reveals, that we are all energy, experiencing life from moment to moment. Awareness, compassion, for this suffering being, helps us to accept past habits, programming to unhealthy mind sets. Freeing us to Just Be.....what ever life's revealing...."Why me he asked of me? The simple answer, just to BE " allowing life to flow through the vessel, mindfully observing and becoming peaceful. Another theme " the more the body is twisted in the physical sense, the more the mind unravels, becoming less tense " allowing true being to experience, just being. Words mean different themes to different people. Hope theses words help. Thankyou for lovely video. Aum Shanti.

I've heard it once said that it is the nature of a self-definition to define other things (i.e Buddhism is this, not that; enlightenment is this, not that, I am this, not that; etc.). What would happen to a self-definition if it would cease defining things, all things? Care to find out? :)

I was curious once at what an adult that grew up deaf, dumb and blind would think about self.
The trouble is that many societies spend a lot of time teaching self to children. Raise them to have high self esteem? What good does that do?

Hello sir, thanks for your guidance. I have a question. It's not to this video but maybe you can tell me. When I practice awareness, my awareness shift very fast. From feet to hand, from hand to nose because there are so many things I can be aware of, so I can't really decide. Is that a problem? Do I need to go back to the body part I wanted to be aware of at first?
Second question : how do I know I do it right? Is there any progress I can notice like being aware of multiple things at the same time?
Best regards and thanks for your great help
    Patrick

    • @MingyurRinpoche
      @MingyurRinpoche  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Patrick. Thanks for your question. Rinpoche teaches us that awareness is the essence of meditation. If you want to learn focus, you may want to see how you can do focusing on one aspect such as sound etc. Of course the mind naturally wants to wander. But you can notice that and bring it back. You might be interested to try the online course calming the mind. It begins June 5 and registration opens May 8. More information at learning.Tergar.org. There’s also a free online introduction to meditation course with video from Rinpoche.
      Best wishes,

Belief falls away when one is in higher self/soul interpretation
There are no names for things or sects really
      There is just is-ness Tbh
The experience is pure though, unlike interpretation via the limited ego which is of the personality, and requires terms, and, beliefs are a thing in this state of being/perceiving.
Pure knowing occurs as one is interpreting through the lens of higher self/consciousness.
There is no beliefs there, just, beingness.
      Isness.
      Infinite I am
